- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9fan-*****-tastic! a light at the end of the tunnel of DRM and carpet lawsuits of children, grandmothers, and he dearly departed.
good for them!- quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19well that's an interesting question I've never heard before: If it meant no drm, would you be willing to shop for your music on myspace? tough choice :-/
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Personally I would be happy to pay for DRM-free music, and I already do in the form of eMusic. I'm obviously not alone.
Recently I've encountered the problem that DRM-ed stores like iTunes sell me music, but I can't use it with Serato Scratch, the program I use to DJ with, so it makes me hesitant to purchase music there, whereas with with sites like eMusic (and soon Myspace and Other Music) I'll be able to buy music I can actually use in the way I choose, not in the way that is dictated to me. - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Interesting. So if Apple started selling this music through the iTunes music store, do you think they would do it without DRM?
- maddla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@signal15
Apple owns iTunes
MERLIN IS NOT A LABEL, IT'S A MANAGEMENT CO-OP (artists maintain rights to music)
Also, As myself being a music distributor, instead of 500 indie labels calling me up wanting to sell music I would deal with one rep, merlin has been in talks for years but nobody had a good idea on how to pull it off until several big distributors will finance the incorporation and front end staff.
SNOCAP is a well connected company, in fact a founding party of SNOCAP helped database myspace in the beginning, so it was an easy in to work out a deal, which to mention has been in the running for a LONG time.
The whole point is that independent artists have been walking in the dark on how to distribute their music for years, now the industry has financially changed to become a background of fluid income while still staying in the position to hold rights to your own music.
Merlin is the beginning to a series of Co-op management systems that will be introduced into the indie-music market within the next 5 years. - EnjoyTheFact, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In case you're wondering, that's not the real Cliffosakajapan.
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Enjoy...it is hard to tell sometimes, since the real Cliff gets buried so often too.
- kingp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The closest thing that the US has to a "label" for the indies is the A2IM (American Association for Independent Music), but even then it's more of a co-operative thing as well. It contains many of the largest and best known indie labels, distributors, from the US.
- Th0Rr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I hope this doesn't kill the 'indie chick' scene
- Niten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I believe you meant 'indie chic', but don't get me wrong: I'm all for indie chicks.
- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Funny, I was hoping it WOULD kill the "indie chic" scene. I hate hate hate when people try to use the term "indie" a genre of music.
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4scottish you must hate oink don't you.
- Th0Rr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no, i meant indie chick
- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have no idea what oink is.
And if you meant "indie chick"... why would this kill that "scene," if you can even call it that? - stradv16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oh my god oink. i hope i'm thinking of the same one you are.
- T3CK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2We have to fight them in large groups that way they cant do anything about it but change them self to accommodate to the masses
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kinda surprised this hasn't happened earlier. Hopefully the pooling of resources will give them the ability to compete in terms of advertising and production.
Although I am not too pleased with the idea of the intermediary being MySpace. (Bleh.) - Solacetech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow and they say MySpace is the worst designed site on the web...It seems to be the smartest too!!!!
- PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4People underestimate MySpace all the time. I get more hits and interactions there, on my writing, music, and blogs, than any of my other sites ... http://www.myspace.com/twiceuponarhyme

- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22An indie conglomerate: The ultimate irony.
- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"We're so indie, we sell our tracks on MYSPACE."
"Shut the ***** up." - skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The 5th interval is neither major nor minor. That is determined by the 3rd, 6th and 7th.
/music geek.- AI_Joe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing... it'll be a perfect fifth.
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The 5th is perfect, as is this idea.
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Edit: Joe beat me too it and I couldn't think of anything funny or witty enough about the P5 in the edit time allotted.
I concede and am prepared for the nega-diggs. - AI_Joe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was going to make a joke that if this does really well, it would be an augmented fifth. Or if it starts to fail it'll be a diminished fifth.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4and all of a sudden, "The Indie Scene" lost so much of it's value. What's to stop this conglomerate from ***** it's artists in the ass aswell ?
- SuperSimon56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@MackPrime
While I hope that wont be the case, I totally agree with you there.
Anybody know the specific labels involved in this? - srdrums, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The RIAA will figure out a way to weasel their way into this and screw indie artists.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The RIAA works for quite a few independent labels, as well as the big 4. Why would they go against the wishes of the ones paying their salaries? No DRM doesn't mean the music is free as in beer, so you may get sued for p2p sharing of the un-DRMed music.
- MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure those indie labels are not a part of merlin since merlins music is distributed by MP3 as the article states.
- srdrums, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude, I was joking.
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Why is everyone assuming this is hte end of DRM music? IT is not.
- bobappleyard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IT was the start of DRM!
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just how "indie" can you claim to be when you've signed a distribution deal with Rupert Murdoch's Newscorp?
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Myspace? nothing against it, but I'd rather not have to trawl through it to buy music. Can't these people make their own website? it hardly rocket-science...
- trimpton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In the article it says that they have the ability to create their own stores using the shared software.
- romulcah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great idea, it's a pity they're using MySpace to flog their wares, for a couple of reasons:
1. Do people that aren't kids use MySpace?
2. Are people using MySpace not just Mtv heads, who listen to the mainstream? This really limits their audience.
3. MySpace is a visual mess and as far as I am concerned doesn't encourage new users or older users, a la iTunes' clean layout and usability.
4. MySpace is domiated by American users and is not as popular around Europe, again limiting thier audience.
Alhtough with this bargaining power they could try and set up their own online store, or convince Apple/Napster/HMV etc to sell their music DRM free on their online stores. Wit the first being way more likely and an option I would prefer. - bestadvocate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want to know what labels have jumped on this deal, I'm a huge fan of a few indie labels.
- TheElectricMonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that guy from napster named his newer company "SNOCAP".....
a snow-cap is when you put some cocaine ontop of a bowl/bongpack of weed, hahaha - groovygranules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A virtual fifth major already exists, called AIM http://www.musicindie.org/
Not sure how this differs? - redballooon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what's "indie" about this merger? it sounds pretty damn corporate, if you ask me. i'd much rather see artists collaborate under labels like Paw Tracks, and create a sense of community than sell out on MySpace. Animal Collective is doing a great job of it already, and they're garnering a lot of attention and success. Not to mention how great and inventive their new EP is (People). Check it....
