- Cfahooligan, on 06/10/2008, -53/+22Urgh. I hate Jack Johnson. This is the first thing you sent me that made me say urgh. I think Jack Johnson should be tied up in heavy chains pitched over the side of a boat in to the deepest part of the ocean. I despise that man and his ***** hippy music. Let's see if I can set a record for thumbs down. I am sure I will get a lot for that comment.
- KilGil27, on 06/10/2008, -7/+13glad to help you in achieving your goal
- Shiftgood, on 06/10/2008, -4/+6Yeah, uh i dont like jack johnson either... but uhhh... you gotta pick your battles man.. no need to get all riled up about it.. Life doesnt have to be so tough you know.
- Wamzlee, on 06/10/2008, -4/+1Wow...are you quoting a Jack Johnson song?
- bgrah449, on 06/10/2008, -2/+5Look at you, out to make a deal. You try to be appealing, but you lose your appeal.
- spencert, on 06/10/2008, -17/+13I actually can't believe he's headlining all of these festivals... when did he become so popular??
- noots, on 06/10/2008, -9/+4pretty much the hour Ben Harper discovered him.
- bman85, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6I'm gonna go ahead and say that Jack Johnson is better than Ben Harper... Just throwing it out there...
- sfrench, on 06/10/2008, -2/+5I love both, but Ben is superior in about every musical category.
- mbrandvi, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1ben harper got jack johnson signed he was a nobody before that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Harper
- radsprack, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2He may be better than Ben Harper, but I like his opponent, John Jackson, more.
- bman85, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Ben harper is more talented perhaps, but chicks love Jack Johnson... Nuff said?
- noots, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3they arn't opponents, they tour togther and appear in each others work.
Ben has far more range and musical talent, although less mainstream in the US it seems. - roycifer, on 06/11/2008, -4/+2sadly, ben's range and talent is all the reason why he can't establish a presence in the mainstream. the mainstream is full of low-grade, throwaway junk like jack johnson.
- bman85, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6I'm gonna go ahead and say that Jack Johnson is better than Ben Harper... Just throwing it out there...
- Wamzlee, on 06/10/2008, -9/+3Atleast in 2004, everyone in my college dorm was listening to him. VH1 plugged the crap out of him, and my roommate played his cd non-stop.
These days, I can't stand anything produced by Jack Johnson. - jayobear, on 06/10/2008, -4/+26Jack Johnson is beach/outdoors music. I don't imagine digg users have seen sunlight in years.
- Daniel591992, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7Maybe it's just me, but I love his music. Not all the songs are boring. His latest album, Sleep Through the Static, is pretty boring, but it depends on your mood. When you are bored, it's great to listen to. His other albums have some upbeat songs though. An interesting note though: his latest album was recorded using solar power.
- greytfriend, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1So I guess I got the wrong album to try him for the first time. What would you recommend?
- Daniel591992, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Take a look at this then:
http://www.amazon.com/Between-Dreams-Jack-Johnson/ ...
- bman85, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1Wow, thats a pretty sweeping generalization.
I am only on digg while slacking at work, plus I ride my bike twelve miles to and from work, My arms are probably at risk for skin cancer they get so much sun... just saying...- mtschmie, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3Wow...
All that for what was not only a "sweeping generalization," but a lame attempt at a joke. It's cool though, it gave you the much wanted chance to brag about the fact that you bike to work. - bman85, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I take every chance I can get...

- stonewaljacksn, on 06/11/2008, -4/+1I live in New Jersey and have been waiting for a worthwhile music festival to come this way for a LONG time. We finally get one at Liberty Park this summer, and Jack. *****. Johnson. is the headliner. I mean okay sure, there are two nights of radiohead, who in spite of how much they piss me off with how pretentious they are (kinda like trent reznor), still write some awesome ***** songs...but jack johnson? no, seriously...headlining a music festival?
he'd have trouble headlining a starbucks or a 3rd grader's birthday party
- noots, on 06/10/2008, -9/+4pretty much the hour Ben Harper discovered him.
- greytfriend, on 06/10/2008, -16/+14I started hearing a lot of buzz on him a few months ago. Another CD I'm glad I got from the library first - I didn't want to keep any of the songs. Way, way too boring. But it's nice he's using his fame to promote environmentalism.

- cashman57, on 06/10/2008, -25/+6It seems to me he could be more effective if he didn't claim humans cause global warming even though there's no evidence that would make a reasonable person conclude that.
- jayobear, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8Yeah I agree wholeheartedly.
It's them vehicles, factories and spray cans that humans obviously had nothing to do with. You libs are cah-raaaazy!

- Good2BMe, on 06/10/2008, -19/+7I think Jack Johnson should stick to writing more songs for movies like "Curious George". We really don't need more entertainers pretending they are experts on the climate.
- jayobear, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8No, instead we need self-righteous digg users expressing their underlying tall-poppy syndrome.
- MrHairy2005, on 06/10/2008, -11/+2Oooo I like Jack Johnson, but I agree with Good2BMe, though shouldn't pretend to be experts...
- EatingPie, on 06/10/2008, -13/+73I can't believe I need to defend this guy here.
You don't just teach little children -- and often even adults -- by drilling facts into their heads. You teach them through the arts, be it stories, movies, music, whatever. Jack Johnson is not claiming to be an "expert" AFAICT, but he's acting on something he believes in, and making environmental issues accessible to children through his music.
Now, we can disagree with Jack Johnson -- or other artists -- but that's another function of the arts. It makes you think and engage others in conversation, giving you an opportunity to share your own beliefs.

At Coachella he played after The Verve and 2/3rds of the crowd either went to see Fatboy Slim instead or went home early.- shempey, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3I went to Fatboy, and it was pretty great. - DownIsTheNewUp, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3Ticket sales for every festival he's attending have been disappointing at best. - Daniel591992, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Same here. I thought it was an artist the digg community would like.

- mcalica, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6Honestly, Jack Johnson is my favorite musician of all time. A lot of people just listen to the music and decide "it's too slow", or "it's hippy music", but you gotta listen to the lyrics. In every one of his songs, there is a message...something that I feel is missing in today's music industry.
- KennMac, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5I'm really confused. I agree with Digg on most things, but the overwhelming dislike for JJ is just beyond me. He's a great songwriter and I find his music to very relaxing.

- BCRazgriz, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5I don't listen to music to relax, therefor I find his music to be quite dull. Though I can see why someone would like it from the perspective of wanting to chill.
- 45441, on 06/10/2008, -4/+0His songs are like nothing else?
You must've missed all other generic acoustic guitar music played in the background of car commercials and drug ads.
- wanderingsun, on 06/10/2008, -3/+16I'm experiencing the same confusion...
- pescado555, on 06/10/2008, -8/+14People claiming his music is bad have never gave the music a chance. Do you think that you somehow know better than his many fans about music? For whatever reason many people on digg think it makes them cool to claim Jack Johnson's (along with many other artists) music is crap.
Instead of scoring internet popularity points by showing your dislike for a musician, try listening to the music with an open mind and find that the music is enjoyable no matter how enlightened you think you are about music.- Wamzlee, on 06/10/2008, -5/+6Hey now, I've heard all his cds more than 6 times. I can quite verify that he is a terrible musician. I can see why people like his "chill, and don't talk about the bad stuff in life" approach, but really, you have to grow up at some point and realize that there is more quality music out there.
- enclaved, on 06/10/2008, -4/+6You're a liar. You have no idea of the content of his songs if you think he doesn't sing about 'the bad stuff'
- matu4251, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4"don't talk about the bad stuff in life"? then you probably never really listened to his songs. And even if it was the case, don't you think there are enough depressing songs around? Any way the vast majority of songs (talking in genral here) are about someone who got dumped and is falling in love...
- Wamzlee, on 06/10/2008, -4/+2Wow, you two are tools. LoL
- matu4251, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3We get it, you don't like him (after all you only made 10 comments on this topic).
- tylercomp, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4i have never gone seeking out his music but i have heard it on the radio and from other people listening too it, and every time i hear it, it just lowers my will to live...
- pescado555, on 06/10/2008, -3/+2"lowers my will to live"? proving that you only dislike it for social purposes. It is quality music proven by the fact that it has many fans. Stop perpetuating the fad of disliking an artists for social purposes.
- stonewaljacksn, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3I don't hate Jack Johnson. I can sit there and hang out while listening to his music play in the background. I don't consider it deep or enlightening and I don't think it "pushes the envelope" as far as music goes. That doesnt mean I hate it. There's just different times for different kinds of music and his songs are not the type I really want to "get into". You can play it and I won't care and some songs are even cool.
Anyone who likes music at all knows about people who hate on things that are cool to hate(JJ=cool to hate) and love things that are cool to like (Radiohead=COOL TO LIKE). People who go with the flow regarding such things, are invariably douchebags.
Now, my problem with Jack Johnson is that he is HORRIBLE for headlining a major music festival. Basically one dude playing fairly quiet songs on an acoustic guitar in front of like 80k people?....are you serious? That's just ridiculous. He should be playing next to the stand where you buy water, or next to the port-a-john lines. That's a crowd-size that's suited for his music. JJ playing in front of 80K people leaves about 79.5K people disappointed.

As I read it: 'I see no problem with musicians or actors taking advantage of their fame to bring important issues to light.' I know it is a crazy idea seemingly by the comments above but, um, how is it objectionable to care about certain issues and bring them to light whether you are a musician or a bum writing on digg? As long of course that they don't talk during their whole concert because that is douchy.

- Sulzer, on 06/10/2008, -4/+26at first i was surprised to see so much hate for the guy, but now i think i understand it. 80% of the people here probably hate him through association because it's the music of fraternity types and the cool people that picked on them when they were in high school. i know we were never, and will never be "cool", but if this is the case for you, it's a shame because he's really a great person/musician/surfer/film-maker. i'm just glad i found his music before it became the anthems of fraternities or chances are i'd be in the same boat...
then again, i've never met the guy face to face, so he could be a total prick- nathanbutnet, on 06/10/2008, -3/+5Well said Sulzer.
- Razorguy, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Well I can say I have and the guy is cool.
I was surfing in Salt Creek once and he paddled out with me and about 4 other guys were doing dawn patrol.
I didn't even recognize him till one guy said 'hey aren't you Jack Johnson?" and he nodded and we introduced ourselves. He was in town for some festival and had stayed at the Ritz Carlton the night before, saw there was some decent surf and came down. We jawed for about 2-3 hours between sets and all went in together.
He came with us over to Harbor House Cafe and bought us all breakfast, saying 'it was nice to be just another surfer once again' as thanks. He even signed my wife's copy of his CD and woke her up with my cellphone for fun (to say she went ***** was an understatement)
I can safely say, the guy is a solid dude and if he ever gets down my way again, I would be more than happy to share the lineup with him again. - tschlink, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1His wife, Kim, was my math teacher in High School. Jack was a regular visitor once upon a time, and he wasn't above bringing a guitar into the classroom and goofing around for a bit either. He even made a semi-surprise performance at our annual talent show(in '02 I think).
His band couldn't make it, and he asked one of our marching band's drummers to fill in for the 3 song set.
He is definitely as cool and humble as you'd think he would be, and a few of us still get emails every now and then containing well wishes and pictures of their kids.
It's a shame he is associated with the frat guy image. He was a surf camp counselor during his years at UCSB and aside from that, fit the quiet nerd stereotype much better than the that of the idiot jock.
your average frat guy probably has no idea. Let him be.
- nickdrake, on 06/10/2008, -3/+9i used to see Jack play in downtown Santa Barbara before he was famous, or apparently infamous to you Dbags posting on digg.
if you know what a great and humble person he is you wouldn't sound like such tools.- DownIsTheNewUp, on 06/10/2008, -3/+3He could be the greatest person in the history of the multiverse, and I'm sure he's a real nice guy, but that doesn't make his music good.
- JointVenture, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Somebody got a reach arond.....and liked it.

"3 Female Teachers Charged With Having Sex With Students"
*clicks* - dhVyse, on 06/10/2008, -5/+4He's an awful singer/songwriter, good sufter, and yeah that's cool what he's doing for the children/enviornment.
- KennMac, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Look out for those SUFTERS.
- jayscot, on 06/10/2008, -4/+3What exactly has he really done for the environment?
- obliviousfool, on 06/10/2008, -2/+51% of all of his album sales go to environmental causes. He records in a studio which gets all of its power from solar cells. He supports an organization which tries to keep development from Hawaii's remaining wild shores. And, I suppose, if you listen to his lyrics, he encourages people to live simpler lives and try to lessen their own impact on the environment.
- vexxefx, on 06/10/2008, -2/+11%? That's one out of a hundred!
[kidding] - Wamzlee, on 06/10/2008, -4/+2And 100% of his CD I bought went straight to a landfill.
- Sluglas, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3Say it: "One p e r c e n t"
So if he does $1,000,000 in sales he gives $10,000.
Big ***** deal Jack.
Has anyone ever heard of Ed Begley Jr.?

- thedogfatherx, on 06/10/2008, -1/+15Good for him. He has done more than I have. Probably more then the majority of you digg users who bash him.
I like Jack Johnson and his music. I don't listen to it that much because it's a little to slow for me but it's still good. It's definitely outdoor/lake music I think.- pigducksheep, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2i really did not know there was such a thing as outdoor/lake music.
- Mikidogo, on 06/10/2008, -4/+5 My ex-wife loves Jack Johnson. Played his music non-stop for months. His songs are pretty much the soundtrack to my divorce.
So screw him.- bgrah449, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4With a manual screwdriver! Conserve electricity!
- centerblack, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Months? rofl.
