- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Marr never really got the praise he deserved for the sound of The Smiths. Morrisey is the one people remember but Marr wrote some fantastic music.
I challenge anyone to hear the intro to Bigmouth Strikes Again without getting a toe tap going.- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Without Marr, the Smiths would have been just another whiny goth-wannabe band. His guitar work took their music to the level of professional. I mean, hell, the effected guitar from the intro to "How Soon Is Now" is one of the most recognizable licks in music history.
As for Modest Mouse: I've never been a huge fan although I do like a couple of their songs. I think I might have to make some more time to listen to them now that Marr is in the band. - gadgetuk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I have a friend who - to me - seems like an amazing guitar player. He can play anything by ear and never makes a mistake. He can pick any chord of any song and just hit it instantly. To me, he is a guitar god (I struggle to get to C and suck at bar chords, curse my useless stubby fingers). He played in loads of bands thorugh the early 90's and toured Europe for a year with one of them and he saw a lot of other bands all the while. When he saw the Smiths, who aren't even the sort of band he was into, he just gave up. He just plays for fun now so he can jam with his son (who's a pretty good drummer). He told me the reason he gave it all up is because Johnny Mar was so astronomically, unfathomably good that he couldn't see the point any more - he could never be on the same planet. That was the highest praise I ever heard anyone give anyone else.

seeing exceptional musicians perform should be inspiration to improve, not to quit. Victor Wooten doesn't make me want to stop playing bass. - innergeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I tolerate Morrisey's whining (get that man a block of stinking Stilton, puh-lease!) to listen to Johnny Mar's guitar work. I've not paid much attention to Modest Mouse, but this would get me to give them a listen.
- Subtonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I USED to think that Marr was the 100% of the genius behind the Smiths, but then I heard Boomslang.

I was a fairly good guitar player and I heard the Smiths. I was floored. Couldn't ***** believe Johnny Marr. He uses different tunings, chord changes, techniques than anyone playing. Hell, on one album he was dropping knives onto a guitar laying on the ground tuned to an Em+6+9+13 chord from 5 ft above to record a curious, jangly sound.
After I heard him, I knew I could never be as good and kind of lost interest. - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ innergeek
If you tolerated Morrisey's nasal whine, then you might survive Isaac Brock's murmurish wailing...To enjoy Johnny Marr's guitar work of course. - klynn497, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never jumped onto the MM bandwagon when their last album came out, but I'm really interested to see what Marr's influence will do for their sound. Though the band is certainly unique, Johnny's genius on guitar will undoubtedly carry MM to new heights.

- isayx3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4He also co-wrote a Beth Orton album couple years ago and released his own solo cd about a year ago.
- sinisterkungfu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3He was supposed to be coming out with a new Healers album, and theoretically, Electronic is still together.
- dalius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5that's a really random addition to the band
- sinisterkungfu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6random, yet awesome.
- Mushaboom, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Modest Mouse doesn't need any new members. I guess as long as he doesn't change Isaac's songs at all, I'm fine with him.
- yomakaze, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Issac Lover (whoever eye sac is) Thank you fo lettin me be mice elf.
- isayx3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1He is not joining the band, he is just co-writing the album.

RTFA
Brock added: "He made a cautious commitment to write and record with us, and then the tighter we got, he was like, 'okay, let's tour too,'. Then he was pretty much a member of the band - not pretty much. He's a full blown member of the band. It's really *****' nice." - isayx3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@sinisterkungfu
Of course Modest Mouse will say his is a full memeber..wouldnt you? Marr has yet to confirm this. In addition I highly doubt Marr will be around for the next several albums. As stated above Marr co-wrote and toured with Beth Orton in support of that album. She could have easily said Johnny Marr is in my band....that doesn't make commited to her band.
And stated above Johnny Marr has his own band...the Healers, which is due to put out another album.
- samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Best news I have heard all week.
Now I have autographs of two members of Modest Mouse.
I can't wait to hear the songs.- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not the best news I've heard about modest mouse... So PLLEAAAASE
BURY me with this...

- ProfessorRiffs, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2As a person who spends all day of every day doing music-related things, just let me say:
Poop all over Marr, Morrisey, The Smiths, and Modest Mouse. I love music from all styles, but just, poop on em.
That is all. Sorry. - OficerMantimber, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3Wow, a previous member of a terrible band joins another group that is a bore for me to listen to.
No digg.- sinisterkungfu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I bet you listen to garbage like Linkin Park and Green Day, huh?
- ProfessorRiffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah the only 4 bands in the world are Green Day, Linkin Park, Modest Mouse, and The Smiths.
Oooooooooooooh wait there are more than 4 bands.
- JED9, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5i just really hope marr doesnt write to much of the lyrics. Modest Mouse is so unbelievable already i just dont want them to change. Isaac's writing is part of what makes MM so great. im hoping the new album will sound more like the old modest mouse like lonesome crowded west sounding.
- Kellan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Awesome! An already awful band gets even *****.
- schwagcast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is great news! I followed Mar to the band The The after he left Moz, and I was instantly a fan of this obscure band. Now he's joining a band that I already love. Awesome!! This really is good news for people who like good news.
- treleung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bury
- jalagl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm glad to see I'm not the only Smiths fan on digg... Marr is one of the most incredible guitar players ever!
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a huge Smiths, Moz & Marr fan, hence my username.
I'm glad to see Marr in the spotlight once more, I cannot wait for this CD to come out.
I have to admit I only know modest mouse from "float on".
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a huge Smiths, Moz & Marr fan, hence my username.
- briken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Remaster and rerelease Interstate 8 with Marr....it's sacrilegious, but i don't care.
- moshisushi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Without Mar's guitar lines, all the Smiths classics would be as boring as Moz's solo stuff I guess. Great to see he's joining this already classic band now!
- Qmass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Morrissey's solo stuff is boring? I guess it is if you have never actually listened to anything he has done since he left the Smiths...
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Morrissey's solo stuff is far from boring. I'll admit, he's had a couple of missteps: Kill Uncle, Maladjusted.
His singing and lyrics are every bit as eloquent as back in the Smith era. I think his voice has actually IMPROVED post-Smiths.
I think Your Arsenal, Vauxhall and I, Ringleader of the Tormentors are his best, and most consistent, bodies of work.
- McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It's Marr. Also, maybe he'll keep Issac Brock from raping more female fans.
- treleung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You're retarded. The girl dropped the case. Name a musician who hasen't had a female fan screaming rape atleast one time in their career.
- hartley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Marr has also signed up to go on tour with the band in support of their second LP"
there's more right? wouldn't 'the moon and antarctica' and 'lonesome crowded west' also be considered LPs? there was at least one other full album iirc. *before good news for people who love bad news, that is.*- asdfrewq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There was Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and Building Something out of Nothing which were singles & B-sides, and Sad Sappy Sucker which was their scrapped 1st album that was later released.
- Subtonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Don't forget Marr as part of Electronic with Bernard Sumner of New Order.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_%28band%29
The track "Getting Away with It" is supposedly a burn against Morrissey.- maddoginthefog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And don't forget his work with The The. I especially like "Slow Emotion Replay" on the Dusk album (1993). He also did some work with Billy Bragg on Don't Try This At Home (1991).
- ickyelf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The Queen is Dead" = Fantastic Album!
Modest Mouse is pretty good, too.
Good luck, Johnny.- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed.
"The Queen is Dead" is the Smiths at their finest!
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed.
- jaadee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1god this is so tight
- crickit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not a huge fan of Modest Mouse, but of Johnny Marr, YES INDEED! Genius! Best of Luck to him, though I don't think he needs it, his talent will take him to the top again. (Though I don't think he ever left it...)
- knifeattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can MM jump the shark twice? Sony ruined them.
- knifeattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpraJYnbVtE
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Float On" is the most annoying song I've ever heard. This band sucks. Listen to some Arch Enemy instead.
