I must say I think its pretty hypocritical for bands like radiohead and nin... that have made millions to start giving away their music for free like it is a right to have free music or some *****.. At little shows bands sell their cd's for like 5-10 dollars. I buy them. Tshirts 10 bucks? Buy it. I've gotten more out of my money, they've gotten slightly more money than they would have gotten had I spent 18 bucks and not had money for tickets or swag.

A small "broke" artist wouldn't be able to make a statement that affects the whole of the record industry, because they don't have media coverage. A band who's made millions who makes a statement like that would make (and has made) a much bigger impact on how the record industry should be doing things.

They get a ton of respect from the fans, and they get money for their music from donations from really happy fans. These fans also will be more likely to go see their shows when they tour. You dont think they think of this? I dunno, as an aspiring musician I see it from a different angle. Ill be impressed when they start giving away physical cds or merchandise instead of 1s and 0s.

Hopefully Smashing pumkins comes around and I'd be set). If they don't I'll just use the radio.
The old music industry model relied on the principal that distribution was hard. It's not hard any longer so the bottom has fallen out of their industry and the entrenched interests are afraid. You can't criminalize everyone. Attempts to do so have further hurt the industry instead of saving it.
So they have to sell somethign other then the distribution, like the performance, the packaging, the conveniences or the quality.
IP laws and Copyright have taken a twist for the worst. The original idea was that inventors and creators put their materials out into the public domain with a temporary monopoly on distribution and use to profit. Putting it out publically helps prevent ideas from being lost in time but this temporary monopoly has been stretched and abused past the original concept and most of the benefits are diminishing due to active attempts to stop cataloging for posterity (a lot of publishers are giving libraries a hard time.) - MiddleOfNowhere, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2Uhm, you haven't been paying attention.
Radiohead did not give away their album "for free" (although that would have been fine with me, too).
You could download it and then pay as much as you wanted. The software world knows this concept as shareware.
I paid as much as for a regular album, because frankly, "In Rainbows" was the only thing worth buying anyway in 2007.

I have NO idea if they have an album coming up and honestly could care less because I'm part of the camp that thinks that no. 1 reason behind their success was their image and all the make up. The only song I like is "Rock n' Roll All Night"... and I'm pretty sure for many, it's the same.

Are just some of the songs I like by them, and I do hate to go against the whole KISS-bashing going on, but to me the matter is rather simple, although I seriously disagre with Kiss speaking out agains Radiohead (another of my favorite bands) whom I praise for pulling off such a stunt that in the end DOES contribute to the demise of the record industry (something I have no problem with it happening, as I am an avid pirate myself) I will continue to listen to the bands music, because in the end, I simply like their songs and their lyrics, and could care less wether or not they are for or against the record industry, since that will not stop me or the continuing growth of the torrent community. - jorelli, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Gene Simmons says fans are ruining the music industry because he's no longer a musician, he's a record producer. but I don't think this is always true, some creative muses are moved by neither the carrot or the stick.
But if you're not working your day-job, you probably have more time to focus on being a musician (or in KISS's case musician/entertainers/marketers). - machinaBleed, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1It generally does - as soon as you are forced to make music to make money in order to put food on the table (or just because you're a money hungry arse in case of Kiss) you inevitably have to write crap and release stuff you're not happy with. If money isn't an issue, you are able to just concentrate on music when you are feeling inspired and happy with the results - that's what radiohead did by releasing stuff like Kid A which was completely polarising and experimental instead of releasing another version of the ok computer or the bends.
Kiss were always in it for the money and their music sounds like it - the same song 500 times.

As much as KISS makes music, they make money. Lots of money. Lots of endorsements, lots of special action figures, lots of promo deals. They are the capitalist kings of rock and roll.
