- russellgrimm, on 05/05/2008, -1/+13We knew two weeks ago that something special was going to be released today, and found out during the day yesterday that it would be at midnight pacific. So no, we refreshed around the time that the album was supposed to be released.. like any fan would do
- senatorpjt, on 05/05/2008, -2/+4I don't personally care for NIN all that much (Don't hate it, don't love it), but my gf is a nin freak, and yes, she spends a lot of time refreshing nin.com.
- spiralout123, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2plus people figured out it was at midnight
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2@aceslick911: It's called RSS. Welcome to 1999.

- lineweight, on 05/05/2008, -26/+4negative, ghost rider. the pattern is full.
- njiska, on 05/05/2008, -29/+5Damn man, I just got lucky. But as a HUGE NIN fan I consider this an honour.
- therightclique, on 05/05/2008, -7/+34you consider submitting a story to digg as an honor? what the ***** is wrong with you? aren't there any people that are just people anymore?
- aceslick911, on 05/05/2008, -12/+1yeah maybe reznor will suck his ****
- senatorpjt, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5Apparently from reading below, Trent linked to this submission, which would be something you could brag about while standing in line at a concert.
- therightclique, on 05/05/2008, -7/+34you consider submitting a story to digg as an honor? what the ***** is wrong with you? aren't there any people that are just people anymore?
- twiztidsinz, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6Happiness is submission to NIN
- Pritchard, on 05/05/2008, -2/+9Guys. What the ***** is the race to get something submitted fast enough? Why do you ever care? It's not like you wrote the news story. Someone got it on Digg, and it got popular. That's all that matters.
- jbassfretless, on 05/05/2008, -1/+8because i have a very small penis and this is my way of compensating. lighten the ***** up.
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1@Pritchard: The question is, why do _you_ care so much?
- njiska, on 05/05/2008, -7/+1158Thank you Trent
- Ebeniz, on 05/05/2008, -2/+102I think Trent is thanking us too since he just linked to THIS post.

- KidFlash2, on 05/05/2008, -1/+57♥♥♥♥ TRENT REZNOR ♥♥♥♥
- loginx, on 05/05/2008, -0/+15Thanks Trent!
- badtzmartin, on 05/05/2008, -0/+17I don't need to thank him. He's a god, and therefore requires no acknowledgment.
- chambana, on 05/05/2008, -11/+1an artist using a cool way to distribute does not necessarily make their music good. let music be music, and innovative and generous delivery systems be their own thing. trent reznor is no better an artist then he was before, the slip is nothing to write home about looking at it just as an album, separating from the "wow it's free and in so many formats, god trent is a god," just let music be music.
- ramcosca, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1You really don't know who you're talking about apparently.
- British0zzy, on 05/05/2008, -5/+2i don't think I need to thank him on a digg comment thread that he'll probably never read. I think my years of paying for NIИ concert tickets, shirts, and albums is plenty thanks.
Not trying to say your thanks should not be appreciated :) - sinurgy, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4I'll be thanking him by going to his concert and dragging several friends with me!!! By the way Trent, I noticed Phoenix is not on the tour list yet, I'm gonna assume you'll be correcting that soon. Right? RIGHT?!
- paulisnotdead, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3*Raises Goblet* To Trent!
- kaelyiesta, on 05/05/2008, -2/+1If these people were obligated to say thanks, it would not be free.
- soogy, on 05/05/2008, -5/+31THANKS! Who else releases lossless FLAC music?! I'm just bummed that I have to grab the full 1.2 GB file for the 24/96 version. Why didn't he just encode that with FLAC too? It wold have been a lot smaller.
- Teej, on 05/05/2008, -2/+10I agree...that's slightly strange, I guess the people burying your comment just have no idea. However, at least we're getting it! I hope it's mastered differently than the 16/44 release, a little less limited, otherwise there won't be much point in those extra bits.
Thanks for the album Trent!- Teej, on 05/06/2008, -4/+5Now this is just bizarre. The 24/96 files are really 16/96. There is the extra high-frequency information all the way up to 48kHz (Nyquist Theorem), however, the extra bits are just padded. That's disappointing is basically false advertising. If they weren't giving it away, I'd be very annoyed to buy that.
Source: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=63 ... - kjd84, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1What a sook you are!

- danno74, on 05/05/2008, -7/+3I wouls assume they are burying it because it was FREE and he is complaining. People who complain about free stuff are tools.

- CrazyRedHatter, on 05/05/2008, -0/+23Anyone who hasn't should go buy Ghost. Thank you, Trent!
- Anchesenamon, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1This is such a great album! Thx Trent!!!
- sourc3, on 05/05/2008, -0/+50Anyone else notice that Trent is "Giving us The Slip?"
- dracostimpy, on 05/05/2008, -4/+14Thom Yorke unavailable for comment. Tosser.
- mattbeetee, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6See, this I can't understand. I can understand that Trent Reznor has done a hell of a lot more to revolutionize how this industry works, and his fight against the RIAA is much more sincere than Yorke's, but is it really necessary to say that Thom Yorke's a ***** because he only fought half the battle? (The full battle being the complete separation of artist and label in this case). Yorke and Reznor have two very separate goals, and I think this is what people fail to realise. At least Yorke did something new. It's not like he got cold feet and has now decided that he's had enough of this free music malarkey. Radiohead made a lot from In Rainbows anyway. Why not just be pleased that you got the free tunes, and be respectful that acts are willing to sacrifice their hard-earned time in the studio in exchange for props instead of cash, instead of pitting them against one another in an attempt to see who's got the bigger balls? (Obviously that would be Trent, both metaphorically and physically).
- graverubber, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1agreed, but tom's still a tosser.
- jeriqo, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2Thom still makes infinitely superior music than Trent... and that's ALL I ***** CARE ABOUT.
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I think the issue is that Radiohead used the internet downloading scheme just to create some controversy to support their regular album release. Now that they didn't get any great numbers from the internet sale, they're not going to do it again. It was half-hearted at best, marketing at worst. They're not trying to revolutionize, just attempting to make a little more money on the side.

- matthewjhughes, on 05/05/2008, -0/+9Trent, you win sir. You win.
- GoneGreen, on 05/05/2008, -25/+2The album is complete pooh... download... delete....
- renegadeafk, on 05/05/2008, -0/+11This is pretty cool, I have actually never really listened to NIN and probably never would have if the album wasn't free, I'm gonna have to check this out.
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Unfortunately this isn't the best example. Go download a FLAC of The Fragile if you want to see the best NIN has to offer. True avant garde for the time. Hell, it's probably _still_ avant garde almost a decade later.
- CTRaider, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2Not only Thank You, but he LINKS to Torrents! YOU are the MAN!
- zatt, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1holy *****. Trent you are the man!
- antoniojvr, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I am no longer a NIN fan, but I still pay for their albums because what Trent is doing to revolutionize music sales has to be rewarded. Great job!
- Ebeniz, on 05/05/2008, -2/+102I think Trent is thanking us too since he just linked to THIS post.
- kookykyle, on 05/05/2008, -14/+91got my copy, cant wait to kick it on and listen to the fabulous 7 new tracks i havent heard a thousand times in the past week
- jackajj, on 05/05/2008, -10/+45yay for new album
- yuutokun, on 05/05/2008, -7/+3Happy Slip!
- quaunaut, on 05/05/2008, -12/+56This was completely worth staying up for.
Though it makes me wonder, was the $5 option for albums abandoned then? Both Niggy Tardust and Ghosts I-IV had that, and he had said he was disappointed in Tardust's sales. As someone who payed for both digital downloads, I hope it either hasn't been completely abandoned or that he made this choice outside of the viewpoint of low sales.- russellgrimm, on 05/05/2008, -2/+30Niggy Tardust was also available for free, which was the route most often taken. He was disappointed that people chose to download instead of paying $5.. if you read his post for the new album, it says "thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one's on me."
- SystemHasFailed, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1People didn't buy Niggy Tardust because it sucked. I listened to it.. and barely got through an entire listening. Everyone I know who listened to it thought it sucked. Ghosts, OTOH was great.. I was happy to pay for it. And I'll probably buy the CD version of the slip too.. because it's a great record.
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1You're right, you didn't like it so the album sucks. See, I liked it, but I guess I was mistaken.

- rhesusattack, on 05/05/2008, -1/+20Probably has more to do with the success of Ghosts as well as, since Trent mentioned it, his dedicated group of followers that he's accumulated over 20+ years in the business.
- GastonFTW, on 05/05/2008, -5/+14From nin.com: "as a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com.

for those of you interested in physical products, fear not. we plan to make a version of this release available on CD and vinyl in july. details coming soon." - quaunaut, on 05/05/2008, -2/+12Abusing my damn comment:
Finished listening to the album, halfway through second listen. Wonderful album, every song is amazing. I'm not sure if it'll trump Year Zero for me, but its definitely excellent.- smithpg1002, on 05/05/2008, -4/+13@quaunaut
If you want to trump Year Zero... suggestions (in order) Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, Broken, Fixed, The Fragile... Any remix album (1990s)... Year Zero was good, but you need to dig back old school with him.- quaunaut, on 05/05/2008, -3/+10I've listened to every Halo released. Year Zero was my #1.
- Rowan187, on 05/05/2008, -6/+1That's very interesting to me. I'll say I wasn't a fan of Year Zero (although after a few listens i loved it), it was far TOO industrial, but it's definitely a great album. Pretty Hate Machine by far tops my list, followed maybe my With Teeth (believe it or not)
- BabyWookie, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3"TOO industrial"? LOL
- DeadeyeDick, on 05/07/2008, -3/+1You is dildos. For reals. I mean, Year Zero was okay for little girls, you knows; better than With Teeth for sure; but everything from The Fragile and back is way superior in terms of talent and technique. You is dildos.
- kjd84, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Hahaha and you listened to them in Cleveland before they were popular back in '88 I guess. go ***** yourself.
- smithpg1002, on 05/05/2008, -4/+13@quaunaut
- stretch611, on 05/05/2008, -1/+14Personally, I really did not care for Niggy Tardust. I am very happy that I was able to listen to it without charge, but at the end of the day I was unwilling to pay for something I knew that I would never listen to again.
However, I did enjoy Ghosts and have made my donation for it.- badtzmartin, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5I agree. I downloaded the free version, and pretty much only liked the song on which Trent sings, so to me that song was like a nin song. Ghosts I-IV, however, I bought sight unseen.
- Jimmerz, on 05/05/2008, -1/+7I liked Niggy and paid for it after listening for free. You chose not to, and that's fine. The great thing is we both got to hear something free, something we never would have heard through the traditional distribution channels, then decide if we wanted to 'own' it.
- kloche, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4Personally loved Niggy Tardust and caught Saul Williams on the Niggy Tardust tour stop in Toronto. His show was great & full of raw energy. He is definitely a brilliant artist. And the fusion of poetry, hiphop and industrial is another genre in itself.
But to each his own.
- timbtwisted, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4Yeah the big difference between Saul and Trent is that Saul isn't as good. I paid the 5 bucks but overall the album was just average and I can see why people wouldn't pay for it.
- russellgrimm, on 05/05/2008, -2/+30Niggy Tardust was also available for free, which was the route most often taken. He was disappointed that people chose to download instead of paying $5.. if you read his post for the new album, it says "thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one's on me."
- sanitarium09, on 05/05/2008, -4/+166Awesome. Trent just kicks ass.
- Ravatar, on 05/05/2008, -0/+13I went from happy to ecstatic once I realized every song in apple lossless format had album art and lyrics metadata. Nice work Trent and Co.
- Tyr7BE, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1What's the difference between Apple lossless and FLAC, out of curiosity? What are the advantages?
- Ravatar, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Well.. the main difference is that FLAC is open-source and Apple Lossless is proprietary. Quality is pretty much the same, and FLAC plays on most media players, either stock or with a plugin. However, you can't play FLAC on an iPod (mine at least). So, Apple Lossless it is.
- Tyr7BE, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1What's the difference between Apple lossless and FLAC, out of curiosity? What are the advantages?

- lineweight, on 05/05/2008, -13/+647I'm sure he just pissed Metallica off to no end.
- 3nigm4, on 05/05/2008, -45/+8Metallica might actually be coming around -
http://www.zeropaid.com/news/9440/Metallica+Now+Em ...- Radanator, on 05/05/2008, -16/+67Yeah, it's unfortunate they had to turn into giant vaginas. Now no one wants to listen to the ***** dance tunes they churn out anymore.
- whereiseljefe, on 05/05/2008, -7/+39Good description of their current music.
- Coffeedemon, on 05/05/2008, -28/+4Let me get this straight. You're here criticizing Metallica for making ***** dance music in a NIN thread. Talk about pots and kettles. Go back to your studio outtakes and turgid compositions of static and knobs being flicked on and off.. on and off. At least its free - of course Reznor is a businessman... this is planning for the future. Give away some of this crap as he records it (its pure profit) and enough of the crowd will bleat about how great and fair he is and some poor fool will be duped into paying full price. He really only needs a few to make a lot of money and retire to his mansion somewhere. Hypocrites.
- Radanator, on 05/05/2008, -4/+7I can tell you've never heard of Kill 'em All or Ride the Lightning
- Verdanic, on 05/05/2008, -1/+11Let me.. see if I got that right.
You don't like NIN therefore we're hypocrites.
Am I warm? - trytohide, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I'd say you're on fire. I'm pretty sure full price was the only option (before certain artists made changes in the way they distribute their product), besides stealing it. So I guess said poor fool would be duped into not stealing...then again, you can't even come into possession of the last two NIN releases illegally due to the licensing. Unless you rob a local store for ghosts, which is pointless when there is a free legal way to get the whole thing.
- evilregis, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Let me know when they come around to making good music again and I'll give a *****. They haven't put out anything worth listening to since ...And Justice For All.
- trytohide, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0I'm not that big a fan, just mentioning something I found. Couldn't tell you the band members names...
- kinthiri, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0I almost agree.. I'd agree and say that everything prior to the Black album was the best time for Metallica. The Black album was good, but it wasn't great, and it signalled the beginning of the end. The 90s were a complete wash after that. Then by the time you get to 1998/99 and the whole Napster issue....
Well, lets just say its pretty disingenuous/hypocritical/complete and utter ***** of them to now make noises about trying to use online distribution methods. All because Radiohead and then Trent/NIN are doing so well actually making money from the technology that spawned from the ashes of Napster.
Lars shall ever be unforgiven :-P- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Honestly, the music they made on Load and ReLoad was much more musically advanced than any of their previous albums. Lots of diverse influences, with a great blues slant on a number of tracks. They were on the road to really maturing as artists. Sadly that didn't come to fruition. Their old stuff is great, but it's definitely much more clumsy and simple.
- Radanator, on 05/05/2008, -16/+67Yeah, it's unfortunate they had to turn into giant vaginas. Now no one wants to listen to the ***** dance tunes they churn out anymore.
- njiska, on 05/05/2008, -7/+100They warned me Satan would be attractive.
Seriously though Metallica had their chance and blew it. Welcome to the new era of music.- halodweller, on 05/05/2008, -5/+7I agree. I think they could have been one of the pioneers to embrace the digital music format, but they blew it. They would have to put out a really good album that both old and new fans could enjoy. I applaud them for doing what they want and not conforming to their fans because that in a way is selling out. However, I personally don't like any of their new stuff (post black album). In short Metallica needs to wow people and even though it would be great if they did I just don't see that happening. Too Little too late.
- Abomonog, on 05/05/2008, -1/+12Yup. Metallica slit the throats of those who made them famous in the first place. The "pirates", Who sold their first efforts out of car trunks at the risk of going to jail for unlicensed music production. It was a crime in 60's, 70's and 80's to produce and sell music without the ASCAP stamp of approval but that got squashed for more favorable schemes for filtering what music got to consumers in the same law the ended the record companies "sponsorships" of certain radio stations and deejays.
- doshindude, on 05/05/2008, -4/+7Metallica lost all of their fans after they singlehandedly killed Napster.
- justice7, on 05/05/2008, -6/+5you guys know Metallica wasn't alone in the fight vs napster.. they just happened to be the ones who were most vocal.
- sczzbckt, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Hey remember how vocal Reznor was about filesharing during the whole napster trial era?
Oh wait...
He wasn't
- Culyt, on 05/05/2008, -3/+9But didn't you hear, Metallica love file sharers now [/sarcasm]
☢ - diablo75, on 05/05/2008, -1/+9HA ha, yeah, ***** metallica. :)
- Picaroon, on 05/05/2008, -7/+2Metallica said their next album would reflect Trent Reznor's methods. So there.
- bleak26, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5but metalica killed their own golden goose fan base and they didnt even notice as they did it.
- mith167, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2I can't imagine the music metallica could still be putting out if they didn't lose a huge percentage of their fan-base due to criticizing filesharing, its kind of sad because they had some really good stuff back in the day =/
- jedinate, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1I find it hilarious that people still bash Metallica for something that happened , what?, almost 8 years ago and that they get bashed in the comments for articles that have nothing to do with them.
FYI they give away free music on the internet too. You can download 19 free concerts here
http://www.livemetallica.com/catalog.aspx?doVault= ...
and some of them are old enough to contain their good stuff.
- 3nigm4, on 05/05/2008, -45/+8Metallica might actually be coming around -
- abhpro, on 05/05/2008, -56/+3I submitted my story several minutes before this one, and this story had 20+ diggs before mine had 5. I don't understand that logic..
- russellgrimm, on 05/05/2008, -10/+0I dugg it, regardless.
- russellgrimm, on 05/05/2008, -1/+20and undugg, since I blindly dugg - did not know it was linked to your blog, which is pretty lame.

Anyway, it's probably got everything to do with the fact that Trent Reznor himself linked to this very post, rather than yours. It's not like you'll be recognised in the street because you got X thousand diggs or something.

- Lyph5, on 05/05/2008, -1/+22Well, it was low quality, for one. And they even admitted that it was mostly just to get people talking about the album.
And if I remember correctly, the store release had bonus tracks that, even if you had chosen to pay $200 for the digital version, you had to pay another $20 to get the 'bonus' tracks.- nicc, on 05/05/2008, -5/+1you mean the bonus tracks that were announced on Radioheads site and were part of the physical product if you chose to buy it (from Radiohead or from a physical cd store in the future)?
you mean the bonus tracks that is "cd2" that was not a secret when Radiohead put up the download page? - Teej, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Lyph, I agree about the low quality, 160 CBR was too low, however, the store release did not have bonus tracks, only the Discbox which was only for sale on their website at the same time as the download.

- catch-22, on 05/05/2008, -0/+8I read a Wired interview where Thom Yorke even admitted that it wasn't the band's idea originally. Their manager had to sell them on it. And even as they were posting the album, they still didn't like the idea.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3In addition to what the other replies have said, once the album was released in stores, they stopped offering the free download.
- Lyph5, on 05/05/2008, -1/+22Well, it was low quality, for one. And they even admitted that it was mostly just to get people talking about the album.
- simpleid, on 05/05/2008, -1/+13trent told everyone to steal his music before they released a free album; i think they took his spotlight. trent's also not an ass, he gave out figures for selling, radiohead kept it all a secret which annoyed me to no end because i really wanted to know the numbers. don't get me wrong i like their music too.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2Don't take what Trent said out of context, though. He was playing a show in Australia, and he asked the crowd if the new album was still as expensive as the previous ones (about US$30), when the crowd answered with a resounding "YES!", he then told the crowd to show the record label what was up there and steal the album.
So while it isn't exactly the same as him just coming out and saying on the website for everyone to steal his music, your point still stands. - seanomalone, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Nice

- whoaohh, on 05/05/2008, -3/+4I don't want to sound like a Radiohead fanboy here, but they still deserve respect for what they did. It's still a thousand times cooler than bands that don't let you download their music for free at all. NIN just improved the model.
- I-Train, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4This is not a publicity stunt to boost album sales. It is a publicity stunt to hype up his upcoming summer tour (which I will be going to).
- jeriqo, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1That's al about hype and people seem to forget about.... you know... the MUSIC.

- thailand1972, on 05/05/2008, -6/+11Money doesn't motivate him since he's already rich. He's doing it for the buzz - of being in the spotlight and getting his music heard. Nothing wrong with that. It doesn't make him some kind of pioneer though since this model is not new. Musicians have been giving away their music since the early days of the internet.
- njiska, on 05/05/2008, -1/+10While it is true that musicians have been giving away music forever, what special about this instance is the consistently. Trent is actively looking to the net for new ways of doing business and he's looking show he his fans he gets it. It's not a one of occurrence, the man is committed to making this happen. Just another good move in a long series of good moves.
- thailand1972, on 05/05/2008, -3/+2Many artists have given away their music consistently (as you put it) in the past and also currently - amateur artists who could make more money from selling their tracks. Artists a lot poorer that Reznor. I think the guy is great doing what he's doing, but it's annoying he gets called a "pioneer" just because he's a well known giving his music away for free.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4He paid for his last tour out of his own pocket (more or less), he creates an entire online ARG for Year Zero which leads to multiple tracks for free for fans well before the album comes out, releases multi-track files of nearly all of With Teeth and all of Year Zero, breaks free of a record label, starts distributing his new albums in physical form as well as FLAC, MP3, WAV and Apple Lossless formats with accompanying PDF of artwork, releases an entire 1/4 of the last album online for free while putting it under creative commons (so it's even legal to torrent it), offers an entire 2 hours of music for $5 (as well as other options for die-hard fans) and then releases another new album completely free, no strings attached.
While I've seen many smaller artists give away some music for free, I've never seen anyone (let alone anyone with a major presence in the music industry) adopt such a gung-ho stance to their material and take digital distribution to these lengths. He really is the first one to do what he's doing. - evan119, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2i think he's a pioneer because of this: he uses channels through which artists have had their music GIVEN away to GIVE his away. big difference, methinks

- Samohtneas, on 05/05/2008, -1/+3I think many people would consider him a pioneer because he's helping everyone understand that we don't need big labels holding us back anymore. If he were still under contract I'm sure it would've been another 2 years until we'd have even heard of Ghosts.
- DephexTwin, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Yeah... this is what goes through my mind. Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV, The Slip.... I can barely keep up with the new music Trent is putting out these days. Is this how prolific other big artists might be if they weren't stuck in major labels? Wow!

- grimward, on 05/05/2008, -13/+1Sleepwalker,
You and everyone else who commends NiN for being so forward and releasing his music for free will inevitably stab him in the back and call him a sell out when he tries to cash in on his demographic, which he is manipulating PR for quite extensivly now. As I've said in the previous thread about NiN's last song, I despise him as a musician as his lyrics are the same thing everytime. But as a marketer and fanboy manipulator, I have nothing but respect for the man as he's playing his self created market segment like a fiddle. It's just amazing to see how he's building an almost fundamentalist loyalty among his listeners and I'm very interested to see how he intends to cash in on this loyalty in the long run.- AutomaticTLC, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3*NIN

- sleepwalkers, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6I know you'll be dugg down for that comment, but I honestly believe that's not too far from the truth. Trent is probably making all of his money from touring, so he's probably thinking that if he can get the album into as many hands as possible by making it free, he'll hopefully be able to convince those people to spend the money to see a live show.
He's not looking to make money off of the albums anymore, it seems, just trying to get the material out there and make some money touring. - xptoast, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Who cares if it's a way to boost ticket sales? I think that would be a wonderful way to do it. Free music to invite you to join in the fun at concerts for a compensated price for tickets is not a bad idea at all from the consumer standpoint or the bands standpoint. Win win situation. Win win is always the best situation.

- NikZ, on 05/05/2008, -0/+17The character is a capital I (or Y), from the Cyrillic alphabet, unicode U+0148. There doesn't seem to be an ALT code for it in Windows, nor a keyboard shortcut in Mac OS. I usually copy & paste from Character Map in Windows.

Also, Wordpad supports unicode ALT codes, but you need to convert it to decimal
So ALT-1048 in wordpad will produce it
Also I guess in wordpad you can type "418" normally, then press ALT-X and it will convert. I didn't know about that one- NikZ, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Oops, U+0418 indeed, my bad (stupid numeric-dyslexia) ;)

- natent321, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Many artists' brains are constantly churning. This holds true for amateurs to icons like Trent Reznor. This lesson crosses into life itself - change is the only constant. And adapting to it is the only option. Combine that with an artist's constant curiousity, the freedom from a record label, and here you have all this work coming out at such a rapid pace. It doesn't mean you have to like it, but I personally also respect him for doing it. And for the record, the slip is addictive as hell.

- veter, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Its no different than any other artist. Most artists produce work daily -- in the music world, we're just used to 2-3 year release cycles. About 6 months to a year of this cycle is caused by record label bureaucracy.
Being released from a label, Reznor is able to release CDs at the same pace it requires to write the music -- he doesn't have to worry about any of the marketing/packaging/release cycle. - Lapsura, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Bored?? - biggerx, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4Dude, this album probably cost near to nothing to record. The only thing it cost them was probably a little time. Recording gear is cheap now & you know Trent has his own studio. I thinks it's a good idea. It keeps their music ahead of the pirates & the labels.

- DrOct, on 05/05/2008, -0/+44Agreed. Thank God Trent is an audiophile, and gives the rest of us this option.
Now if only we could get a similar quality (DVD-A or SACD or whatever) 5.1 mix of The Fragile...
It also makes me really happy that all of the downloadable albums he's put out or helped put out have had lossless options. I hate that 99% of the music available for download, is only available in a lossy format. I'll take the longer download times and have a perfect copy to listen to on my stereo thankyouverymuch (and then make mp3's from that copy for my portable devices where space is an issue).- hakujin, on 05/05/2008, -0/+7There is a 5.1 mix of the Fragile, both in SACD and in DVD Audio (or DTS 5.1 mix). I purchased the dual disc when it came out as it's one of my favorite albums.
- slobbi, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Sure? I think you're talking about the downward spiral.
- Lane, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3No the fragile has a surround sound DTS mix and beside you in time has an HD DVD
- Logicwax, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2nope, The Fragile has NOT been released in 5.1/DTS. Those are fan-made mixes floating around. NOT official
- dracostimpy, on 05/05/2008, -3/+2At first glance, all I saw was "God Trent", and it was good. Anyone heard comments from God Money about this yet?

- Caleb666, on 05/05/2008, -18/+5You idiot, the WAV files are a silly idea. Why not use a lossless codec like FLAC or Wavpack instead of just using uncompressed WAV files that take up HUGE amounts of space. The compressed lossless copy would take up about half as much space and still sound the same.
- Teej, on 05/05/2008, -1/+15While I agree with the content of your comment, the 24/96 could have been FLAC'd to make it a bit smaller for download, you don't have to be a douche about it.
- hakujin, on 05/05/2008, -5/+1i don't even agree with his comment. there is an option for both and perhaps some would disagree that FLAC is the same. Perhaps the flac isn't 24 bit depth 96khz sampling rate OR perhaps the wave can be encoded to DTS more easily?
- Teej, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1FLAC is lossless. From wikipedia: "It can handle any PCM bit resolution from 4 to 32 bits per sample, any sampling rate from 1 Hz to 1,048,570 Hz in 1 Hz increments, and any number of channels from 1 to 8." I
t is basically any PCM data at any bit depth or sampling rate (at least within normal consumer specs) that you want it to be. If you wanted to convert the FLAC to DTS, you could just convert it to WAV first. It doesn't degrade the data because it is lossless. It's just smaller. It's like a *.zip file, but specially tuned for compressing music.
Also, there isn't an option for both. The 24/96 version of the album is only in WAV, the FLAC version is 16/44.1.

- evan119, on 05/05/2008, -7/+1protip: .wav is a lossless filetype
- maxsunset, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4No it's not. It's fully uncompressed. Lossless implies compression with no loss.

- the2989, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1The 96/24 wave files sound absolutely beautiful on my Bluegears B-Enspirer sound card and Logitech Z-5500 speakers, and Caleb666 doesn't understand the concept of too much hard-drive space. The only bad thing is that they accidentally made track 9 the same as track 10 in that release (unlike MP3 and FLAC, which I also downloaded), I'm hoping Trent notices soon =P

He bitched when Niggy Tardust didn't sell so well, but after his faith was restored by the crazy sales figures and high profit margin on Ghosts, (which has grown on me a lot) he's shown Radiohead and everyone else how to release an album on the internet and how to treat fans who do the right thing.
Put your music and a PayPal tip jar on the internet and I think people will do the right thing. I'm hoping to walk the walk in a few months as a complete and total unknown. ;)- Jogga, on 05/05/2008, -0/+16I like your style.

- sleepwalkers, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4What do you mean by that? Why is it too bad?
Music that sucks doesn't matter, whether it's free or not.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4What do you mean by that? Why is it too bad?
- IronGoldfish, on 05/05/2008, -1/+9What about every other artist who hasn't even come close? I'm sorry, but Radiohead never said that they were trying to change anything... they said it was what they had to do. I'd hate to get dugg down for musical opinion, but I'm proud to be a Radiohead fan. I'm also proud to be a Nine Inch Nails fan. Why do we need to descend into childish popularity contests? I don't think half of you even care about the music itself, only the distribution method.
- db3786, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Here here! Its such a stand off, this is a r_evolutionary time, such importance to be wasted on '*****' our fellow artists... listen and perform, and write, and listen.
- dafragsta, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6It's not that Radiohead did anything bad, so much as it is that they did something one time and got all the credit in the world for "innovating" by being the first major band to do an unorthodox internet launch. What IS bad is that Radiohead admitted to making more money off of In Rainbows through the online purchase AND the people who bought the album online missed out on the second CD and they didn't even get a proper 320kbit or FLAC rip. It was a lesser product compared to the store-bought CD package.
NIN, on the other hand has put out THREE albums with a great deal of care given to making the fans not feel as though they are getting a substandard product by not buying the CD in stores. Trent also acknowledged his fans willingness to pay and GAVE this album away, when he just as easily could've set up the checkout the same as Ghosts. My rant on Radiohead is not so much that I think they are a terrible band (I REALLY like Radiohead's music) or that they flat don't give a ***** about fans, but I do think Radiohead uses buzz as their publicity vehicle, be it launching a pay-what-you-like album and then saying they won't do it again after making a lot of money, and then making the big "we won't travel because of global warming, when the planes are flying anyawy." grand gesture.
I like Radiohead, but I've said it before, they are smug. They fail at seeming as approachable as Trent has made NIN approachable. I think Trent actually doesn't care about the commercial success as much as long as NIN stays somewhat successful. I think it comes out as being more about the art and respecting the audience.- IronGoldfish, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3OK, that makes much more sense. Thanks for clarifying. I apologize if my first statement came off as rude.
- jeriqo, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Honest?
This is ***** NOT honest.
He already spent almost 20 years with a major record label... OF COURSE it is easy not that he has thousands of fans.
This guy is killing the new artists who actually NEED money from their record sales.
This guy is killing music.- Akisej88, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0How is he killing new artists? By being awesome? Good fans will pay for good music, and it's not like he's putting ALL of his albums online for free. :P Jeez, take your bitterness and put it into something productive.

- br0ken1128, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Right on ... I'm an unknown and I was dissapointedwhen stuff didn't sell despite gaining a fairly large fanbase locally and online, the problem is you need a large base that you're loyal to as well ... I no longer sell my music for the most part, I have it out on iTunes still but the future work is free and collaborative with anyone who wants to collaborate.. it's been far more rewarding, not financially but personally.. I think it's what music is meant to be :) just sadly means I won't be quitting my day job any time soon ..
I love the new album and I plan to buy the physical copy when it's out to show my support, I'll also be at the cleveland show... keep it up TR!

- dracostimpy, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5I think the best way to show support is to buy a buncha NIN stuff online and hand it out to people. That way Trent gets paid and is thus encouraged to keep releasing his music for free, you get celebrated by friends and in Budweiser ads as "Mr NIN Swag Hander Outer" (ladies dig free *****!), and a cycle of paying forward begins that will eventually lead to grannies whistling "Happiness in Slavery", babies chugging from bottles shaped like torture devices, and Trent releasing new albums twice a day. That's the kinda world I want to live in.

- R0ck3t33r, on 05/05/2008, -2/+12For those of you who have listened to the album already... do you have any idea why this version of "Discipline" is about 20 seconds shorter than the previously released version? It seems almost like a chunk of it was somehow cut off. Any thoughts?
- PMartinez527, on 05/05/2008, -2/+3the fade out part just cuts off randomly. i don't know why... i just swapped the two versions and it sounds fine now :)
- MrSpontaneous, on 05/05/2008, -0/+9I don't have access to my other version of discipline right now, but I think the guitar in the main melody has a different tone. This might be a newer version...
- njiska, on 05/05/2008, -5/+0Considering how recently Discipline was mastered, that's a scary thought.
- russellgrimm, on 05/05/2008, -0/+8I was wondering the same thing.. this version ends more abruptly and goes straight into the next song, whereas the previous version would have made for a nicer transition.
- Carrzy, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5Let's not forget that the first version we heard was 'radio friendly'.

i'd rather pay ten quid for one amazing album every two years than loads of free sub-par downloads.- ertz, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4well, you could always make a custom album with the hits of each release.

- russellgrimm, on 05/05/2008, -2/+14Trent wouldn't put his name on anything "sub-par."
- knightboat, on 05/05/2008, -4/+3With Teeth.
- Samohtneas, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1It wasn't so hot but it still had its songs. The Hand That Feeds, Only, Sunspots and Right Where It Belongs. Everything other album.. great :)
- Endemoniada, on 05/05/2008, -2/+3Sub-par is not the same as "I personally didn't like it". It's easily as good as any other record he's made, it's just a different sound, a different style, to it. That doesn't necessarily make it worse, and to me personally, actually makes it better.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/05/2008, -2/+3Man, why is everyone so hard on With Teeth?
It had a lot of great songs even if it wasn't the strongest album as a whole.
- knightboat, on 05/05/2008, -4/+3With Teeth.
- getbusyliving, on 05/05/2008, -0/+15At the risk of sounding like a fan boy, this is a GREAT album.
- str1fe, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4Don't worry, fanboys in general are what makes Digg work. Keep up the good work.
- bexamous, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I get your point and agree to an extent but I'm not sure how well it can be applied to the real world. Does it really take 2 years of non stop work to make a good album? I'm thinking either it comes out good or it doesn't, you can only polish it up so much. With more time you can start throwing stuff out and redoing it all and perhaps it'll come out better the next time. With this process however why throw anything out? I'd gladly take an 'avg' album rather than wait 6 years for something amazing.
Plus if you look at recent releases:
With Teeth (which I thing is great) is hated by many for some reason and it took 6 years for it to show up. Should have been beyond amazing if time=quality, right?
Year Zero then takes only two years and is great... and during that two years NIN is on tour so how much time was really spent making it?
Ghosts took one year and is generally though as good, considering it is an instrumental cd. I don't think you can knock its quality for the type of music it is.
So far these three releases all go against the idea time=quality.
I think a bigger problem people have is not due to the time spent making the album but the 'sound' of the music. If you don't like an album it doesn't mean its bad.
Anyways I'm bored at work and have nothing else to do but mess on digg.
- ertz, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4well, you could always make a custom album with the hits of each release.
- jezit9in, on 05/05/2008, -2/+11need new underwear now! love you trent!
- shagg187, on 05/05/2008, -1/+63Once again... Holy *****! I was willing to pay for this and my credit card was ready :P
- Asheis, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3I know! I was putting a bit of cash to the side for this... beyond cool!
- LeopardGirl420, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1More money to spend at their concerts ;) ! Also they do have quite a bit availible on the NIN.com Merch store
- Asheis, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3I know! I was putting a bit of cash to the side for this... beyond cool!
- DrakeRubicon, on 05/05/2008, -1/+82That's the way it should be. - Listen to it, love it, give money to the artist.
Trent does really great stuff.
Goodbye music industry, hello Artist ^^ - Lorddias, on 05/05/2008, -9/+3downloading nao
- 311chaos, on 05/05/2008, -3/+19Oh hell yes! Thank you Trent. You are brilliant.
- 180andback, on 05/05/2008, -3/+6Who the ***** is digging you down?
- sx66gns, on 05/05/2008, -2/+7***** hater bitches running wild.
- 180andback, on 05/05/2008, -3/+6Who the ***** is digging you down?
- swAppp, on 05/05/2008, -0/+17surprise surprise what do we have here :)
- PMartinez527, on 05/05/2008, -1/+16anybody else know if there's any meaning to the artwork?
- dn11, on 05/05/2008, -0/+31nope, but I noticed that each track is different, not a bad idea. how long till we have animated pseudo music videos or other visuals embedded in our digital music? the whole concept and format of an album as we know it is rooted in the analog world
- 180andback, on 05/05/2008, -0/+17You're onto something.
- DrOct, on 05/05/2008, -0/+10Seriously. That is a great idea...
- Seph7, on 05/05/2008, -0/+11The Year Zero resistance flag is found as the artwork to "Letting You" Also the main cover involves a hand grabbing someone, the hand could symbolize/be the presence if this in fact is Year Zero Pt.2
- Fatman2008, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I noticed that too...but i really don't think it is part 2...im waiting for zip discs in bathroom before i say part 2..
- WillK990, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6Page 3 is the title to the song: 999,999. The 9's are sideways though. Same with the next, 1,000,000. Page 5 is the AIR flag like Seph7 says, and the one for Discipline is a lower case "d". The pic for Lights in the Sky looks like a sun/star, the rest are a little confusing though. Just my 2 cents.
- notcarljung, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1I think the AIR flag is just a bleeding hand designed that way to throw everyone for a loop! hehe.
- jinxplayer, on 05/05/2008, -1/+3Yeah, the meaning is that its art.
- dn11, on 05/05/2008, -0/+31nope, but I noticed that each track is different, not a bad idea. how long till we have animated pseudo music videos or other visuals embedded in our digital music? the whole concept and format of an album as we know it is rooted in the analog world
- Sporadic, on 05/05/2008, -0/+15Already on my second playthrough.
I'll be buying the CD in July :) - unitedkronos, on 05/05/2008, -3/+147Trent, give us your PayPal email so I can send $10 to it as a gesture of gratitude.
- dorkino, on 05/05/2008, -1/+59(inserts my own paypal address here)
- Capta1nA, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6There's going to be a CD and vinyl release in July.
- titorTT, on 05/05/2008, -0/+32or you can just visit http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options

and 'order' again the $5 Download. the money will get to his pocket. - Endemoniada, on 05/05/2008, -0/+14Honestly, if Trent wants to give this one away for free as a thanks to his many fans, let him. He WANTS you to have it for free. If you want to support him, go to a concert, buy a T-shirt or just keep buying his records in the future. Donations are great, but I honestly don't think Trent *needs* them all that much. If anything, he probably gets quite the nice royalty check from all his previous works.
If you REALLY want to donate money, get Saul Williams' album for 5$ or find another, smaller band that you like. Show the world that there ARE honest people who want to support the artists, especially the ones that really need the support.- kevlarbaboon, on 05/05/2008, -4/+1no, niggy tardust sucked.
- theokandroid, on 05/05/2008, -2/+38I WANT to pay for this, but thanks so much Trent, you are the best.
- teambosun, on 05/05/2008, -36/+26On front page with 210 diggs??
- Lorddias, on 05/05/2008, -1/+24Rofl, don't know why you're being buried, but that was great.
- sephiroth965, on 05/05/2008, -2/+10He was being sarcastic, lol.
- Disclaim3r, on 05/05/2008, -1/+13The album is great, thanks Trent!
Also, I'm still curious as to what the genre (253) means. I've heard area code, but that seems irrelevant. Any ideas?- DrakeRubicon, on 05/05/2008, -10/+1Halo 25.3
Because Halo 25.1 is "Discipline" and 25.2 is "Echoplex" ^^- Klarth, on 05/05/2008, -0/+12That makes no sense. 25 = YZ Remixed. 26 = Ghosts. We're on 27.
- eMONKe, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3You're correct. The PDF that came with the the album says Halo 27.
- eMONKe, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3You're correct. The PDF that came with the the album says Halo 27.
- Plastefuchs, on 05/05/2008, -7/+0I thought that Ghosts shoudn't be an Halo Release, so that collectors don't feel the need to buy it because its a Halo release.
- danwallace, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Yeah, that's kinda dumb.
- mywhitenoise, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6What?
- Klarth, on 05/05/2008, -0/+12That makes no sense. 25 = YZ Remixed. 26 = Ghosts. We're on 27.
- snoopdogg, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2i'm pretty sure it's just the way the ID3 tags work.
- DrakeRubicon, on 05/05/2008, -10/+1Halo 25.3
- DeputyDiezel, on 05/05/2008, -17/+6in now way at all do i mean to rag on trent, but previous actual album releases have been much better and more full of energy than this, this is all still great, trent is one of the most talented people in the world, but like has been said before, i would be nice to have more time between albums and have them be better and more energy and have us wait longer and anticipate harder.
- getbusyliving, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6Okay well you are entitled to your opinion.. but have you actually listened to the entire album? More energy? You have to be kidding man.
- indigae, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2as getbusyliving said, you certainly are entitled to your opinion, but i have to disagree. i'm MUCH happier with this album than i was with 'with teeth'... and i waited for that for -- what was it -- nearly six years? same with 'year zero' and 'ghosts i-iv'... i prefer all of these over 'with teeth,' and they have all been written and recorded within less than the last two years. and the energy is there, no doubt about it. give the album a couple more listens, man!
- MrBogard, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1With Teeth > Year Zero
Ghosts is awesome though--and so far so is this, I haven't finished it yet.
- MrBogard, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1With Teeth > Year Zero
- Endemoniada, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Trent's clean, there won't be any more rage like before. Enjoy him when his head is clear instead, if you really concentrate you'll find that his later works have incredible detail and depth. Personally, the kind of evolution as an artist Trent has shown impresses me to no end. This is truly what makes an artist great.
- Akisej88, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0I think that this album has plenty of energy. Seriously, since no one is demanding his releases to line their own pockets, I doubt he's rushing to put out tons of music. He's just going with his own inspiration, and there happens to be a lot of it!
- notoriousdkg, on 05/05/2008, -1/+9another one? jesus, i'm still on ghosts! thank god i'm awake this late or i probably wouldn't have known till tomorrow.
- srhhighrider, on 05/05/2008, -1/+17=) this just made my day ... thanks trent
- gsadamb, on 05/05/2008, -1/+10Wow. I didn't know about this, but it's pretty amazing. Trent Reznor is awesome.
- malendariel, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6He's touring North America later this year - can't wait til he visits us down under again. Been to many of his concerts down here and they've all been so good (Luna Park was a poor venue but the show still kicked arse - loved hearing Dead Souls live).
- PMartinez527, on 05/05/2008, -1/+108embedding lyrics was a nice touch.
- DrOct, on 05/05/2008, -3/+17Wow I hadn't even noticed that! Nice!
Now if I could just find the lyrics for Ghosts... ;)- ramcosca, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Ha, lyrics for Ghosts. I can transcribe them for ya if you want. :P
- dvslamont, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3absolutely what a nice touch i was hoping he would embed them just like he did on discipline and echoplex
i actually was playing discipline on my iphone and didnt realize what was happening
i thought the album art was the lyrics - macbook9999, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0I just wish I remembered that the .wav format doesn't allow you to add lyrics. Or for that matter, Cover Art. (The cover art was included in a folder however, in the download.) The .aiff format does let you add lyrics and cover art, but windows probably doesn't support it (even though its the same exact thing), which explains the .wav files. I was planning to convert the files to a .aac (also called .m4a) but not before I get lyrics, so I just downloaded the files again in .mp3 format, which saved me the trouble of lyric hunting. You see, even if the lyrics I come across are exact, I still have to screw with it (putting a x# mark for repetition, spacing properly, capitalizing the first letter of a line ...etc.) Anyway, this is an awesome album. Can't wait to see what NIN comes out with next week. lol :)
- DrOct, on 05/05/2008, -3/+17Wow I hadn't even noticed that! Nice!
- MrTangent, on 05/05/2008, -2/+17Great stuff. Can't wait to buy the CD in July. Hopefully it'll have custom artwork like Ghosts. I bought the $75 version of that and would gladly pay for a custom job to have high quality versions of everything, including the remix tracks on DVD.
- aserer511, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3you're a great music fan
- TheMinstrel, on 05/05/2008, -2/+59Jesus, Trent is amazing.
- zerock, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3amazing , indeed
- sleepysteve, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6That sentiment has been repeated over and over in these first 50 comments, and I dugg you nonetheless because you're right.
- Seph7, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4Always has been, always will be..
http://digg.com/music/Trent_Reznor_Before_Nine_Inc ...

- DubBucket, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4Amazing, Trent is Jesus.
