Late post but eh:
Recently the track "My Violent Heart" has been released (this isn't a ***** leak, no way) supposedly from a flash drive found in a bathroom at a NIN concert. If you check the comments in the id3 tag for the song you find this:
----------------
found in men's bathroom, stall 4, coliseum, lisbon, portugal
another version of the truth .com
dig
24.3.2
---------------
At the end of the track there is a huge bit of static that doesn't really sound like static; it has a pattern. If you decompress the song and load it into a program capable of viewing spectral information, you'll see this:
http://fatherg.googlepages.com/myviolentheart.jpg
^taken with Fruity Loops, fyi
I don't think this is a "leak" but the track was released on purpose.
My reasoning: Aphex Twin did something similar (hell, exactly the same) with the spectra on the Windowlicker album. If you loaded up the retail cd and loaded up the right track to be analyzed you would see his face. It didn't work for mp3 because the compression killed the effect. If this was just a half-assed leak we wouldn't be able to see The Presence. Trent & Co did this on purpose. It's the only explanation.
Even better; check out the Year Zero website(yearzero.nin.com). Notice that bit of graphics glitch on the track title for My Violent Heart? It's in the exact same spot in the title of the track as it is in the audio. The plot thickens... - VeryAngryJim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44wow, that picture is really creepy.
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's a good one too :D
- Schrodinger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14someone explain that picture to me please
- deltaandroid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12In sockpuppets pic, at the end (that big yellow block) it looks like an eerie hand reaching downwards!
- AegisGFX, on 10/12/2007, -50/+9All the nine inch nails news lately seems very staged. Very planted. I'm burying this lame story.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43I can confirm this (if the picture wasn't enough evidence). I opened it up in Fruity Loops 7 and it does have that eerie hand.
I would assume that the hand came first, and generated the static.
Could this be the hand that feeds? - bigdt87, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7ooooohooo oooo omg that is so awesome.
that picture is the "presence" that is seen in the pics on anotherversionofthetruth.com in the forum.
oloommmggg its like lost.
hold on, ill get alink
http://anotherversionofthetruth.com/end.htm - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21sorry for the double post, but one of my huge NIN friends said this:
the hand has to do with that line from the wretched "god himself will reach his ***** hand through" on that anotherversionofthetruth forum they talk about it
they call it "the presence" and there are a few pics of the hand
indeed, check out the forums. all sorts of posts about the hand

(please dont digg me down, its not spam! its the official site)
edit: damnit bigdt87 you beat me too it. - pwill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I wrote out the lyrics (quickly)
Sorry for typos and whatnot, I was rushed
you and i only look the same
but we are very far apart
these bullet holes (will mark where the passion used to be)?
and there is violence in my heart
in to fire you can send us
from the fire we return
you can label us a consequence
of how much you have to learn
you can try, but you'll never understand
this is something you will never understand
can you hear it now?
hear it coming now?
can you hear it now?
chorus:
on hands and knees we crawl
you cannot stop us all
???
???
we will not let you win
you have set something in motion
much greater than you have ever known
standing there in you're great naivity
about to reap what you have sown
i will feed upon your weaknesses
soon you'll lose the world (to care?)
when you return to the place you call home
we will be there x2
chorus x2
bridge: solo
(whisper) it seeks me out x4
bridge 2
static - fatfattymcfat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Kinda looks like a butt on a copier to me.
I mean, it *was* found in a bathroom. - Klever, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Now THIS is creepy....
http://www.bastwood.com/aphex.php - roprot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20wow, that is really some nice bit of viral propagation .. from a restroom to the 'net in a few easy steps. well done mr. reznor and co!
even though, by the time its in the shops and i can buy it 'normally' i would have downloaded as much of it as possible, i'm still gonna actually *buy* the next NIN album. just for the rampant display of net-savvy being demonstrated, y'know .. - rudyB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Schrodinger
The spectral-analyzer is a graph that looks at all of the frequencies that the sound sample (in this case, the song) and colors the frequencies that are currently being output (those that can be heard). For instance, if a sine wave was oscillating at 700Hz for say 6 seconds, there would be one thin horizontal line at the x value of 700. The x axis is frequency (low to the left and higher to the right) and the y axis is time (soonest at the bottom, earliest at the top). - xenovis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So if you go on the forum site http://anotherversionofthetruth.com/ you will see that there are a number of MP3's listed in the forums. One being:
http://anotherversionofthetruth.com/opal.htm
with the mp3:
http://anotherversionofthetruth.com/audio/opalo.mp3
Exactly 2:42 into the opalo mp3 their appears to morse code embedded into the mp3. I would look deeper into this. - omnivector, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@iamcitzen
on hands and knees we crawl
you cannot stop us all
our bones

we will not let you win - Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Wow.. This whole Nine Inch Nails thing is really quite cool. Great marketing plan, and very Lost.. uh.. esque..
Looking forward to more cryptic whizzbangers.. (Just wanted to see if I could use that word in a sentance..)
Thanks @ oatmeal!

"Maybe it's not important at all or whatever, but I just came home from the first Madrid show, and I happened to find a flash drive in the bathroom and... guess... Yeah, I have now "My Violent Heart" too, from NIN's (roadies) very hands!! I'll take a better pic, I promise. Had to scan it. Nothing fancy, just a flash drive. It was just "strange" finding it in the men's bathroom...
Yeah, mens bathroom. I actually thought for a second when I found it it was strange, and maybe it was a roadie's cam memory card or something. I hoped it was interesting, but never thought it was an actual new song!!"
This is the second known found nin-flash drive. Contained in the comments for the id3 of this drives' My Violent Heart was the following:

- stung47000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah, it's "viral" but it's pretty clever. Even if Apex Twin did something similar, NIN has been doing stuff like this for a long time. Hidden tracks and whatnot, it's a nice variation for the digital age.

- Rinkin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Track seems legit. Thank you.
- acdcfanbill, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15I would say it's only viral marketing if they had a lower class hooker in the bathroom with them when they found it.
- xstnothing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26NIN:: trying to reach their Portugeuse fans with bladder control issues.
Awesome band. - FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -17/+10i listened to it earlier today..and again when i got home. hopefully this was an accident and not part of some viral marketing campaign, 'cause that song is.... well... let's hope the rest are better :^|
- ohgr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2It's not that bad dude.. just a rough mix.
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It's more minimalistic, noisy and experimental, with a bit of an IDM vibe even. I like it.
- bmeckel, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2and unfourtunatly, it is viral marketing
- FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"...noisy and experimental, with a bit of an IDM vibe..."
no, that was 4 mins of forced loud/soft dynamics combined with an unimaginative intro-verse-chorus-verse-bridge-outro structure... with a bit of an IDM vibe, just like a prefect drug (more so the nin remix) and that was 10 years ago already. don't get me wrong, i love NIN - i've been a fan for 14 years now! it just seems like the marketing is going to be more interesting/meaningful than the product. i will admit, though... i do like the last minute - but after 3 minutes of apathy it doesn't really do it for me. like i said, hopefully the other songs are better.
btw, *this is "noisy and experimental":
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4674458789369331520#25m12s - BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks for your in-depth analysis of the song structure, Mr Music Expert. It's noisy and experimental for mainstream music. It's not Merzbow or Autechre, of course.
- MurderMystery, on 10/12/2007, -2/+165Free usb drive!
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/12/2007, -41/+3LOL that is what I would be thinking. NIN is bubblegum industrial compared to Wumpscut, Frontline and Funker Vogt.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3@Jagdwulfe: Hell yeah!
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5You guys think that Wumpscut, FLA and Funker Vogt is real hardcore industrial? LOL
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nobody knows where that flash drive has been. Do I really want to listen to this song?
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Babywookie: Depends on how you define industrial, the term has been somewhat changed in the last decade, it also depends on what continent you're on.
In NA, industrial could be Ministry, NIN, Pigface et al but here in Europe it's something else. And no, Merzbow, CMI bands, Hands, Hymen and Ant-Zen is not industrial...that would be noise/powernoise/etc. So there, you feel like schooling me in something I've been into for fifteen years with 900 cd's to prove for it then get back to me. - Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Wouldn't it be a USPee drive?
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@rauz:
I wasn't trying to school you on anything. I just find it funny when people think that FLA and Funker Vogt are somehow more legit "industrial" artists than NIN. Skinny Puppy and Coil - yes, but Funker Vogt is a joke. "Shaven ***** ***** much more horny"?!? C'mon. BTW, I like some select FLA and Wumpscut.
- AK10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I doubt this is an accident. Maybe a tie-in with the possible alternate reality game to promote the album? This sounds just like the sort of crazy ***** Trent would do. He released multi-track versions of a few songs off his last album and asked the fans to remix them...now THATS cool.
- joymode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In trents recent words
"***** Industrial. ***** Consumers"
Industrial is dead. any current artist that tries to cling to it will just become irrelevant. I'm glad that NIN doesnt fit into what "Current" Industrial seems to be.
Skinny Puppy is the last Industrial band making good Industrial music.
Everyone else has evolved. and rightly so.

- mroffroad, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3so because it was in the bathroom they are saying the song is SHIOT!
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -25/+5Christ that is awful.
- tast01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Some people think NIN is just noise, after a few listens of a nin song you really start to appreciate all the little things about them. Every nin song is an amazing soundscape, all of them unique.
- ohgr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14hmm i'd check this thing for herpes
- rosary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28It's no accident. Here a spectral anaylsis of the static at the end of the track:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/benmattingly/390376128/
Interesting stuff.- Rinkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I would have never thought to check something like that.
- Nar1117, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10And that tells us what exactly?
- acdcfanbill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0that someone is putting us on with that picture, or that it's viral marketing.
- reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9its a hand reaching down from the top
- Nar1117, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Im sorry, but how does the sound spectrum of a song say anything about how it is distributed, and for what purpose?
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18The hand is "The Presence"
http://iamtryingtobelieve.com/images/content_02.jpg
Basically if it was a rip from, say, a stole CD, if done wrong (and it usually is) the MP3 compression would screw up the display of The Presence and it would come out all mangled and no one would ever know until the CD was released. Thus, it was leaked intentionally by the band as part of the puzzle. - ohgr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmmm that looks just like the hand from that site tied to Year Zero
- Nar1117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Gotcha, thanks for explaining. Interesting technique... reminds me of the whole "I love bees" thing for Halo 2.
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30There's more of a story behind it.
Opal/Parepin is somehow the cause of The Presence. It seems to be a sort of hallucination.
Opal is the drug that the government used to rid the country of cocaine possibly for economic gain - as stated in various sound clips, no one has an interest in coca leaves anymore and everyone is hooked on Opal from America.
Parepin is the substance the administration puts into the water to boost immune systems and protect us from bio-terrorism, but those who haven't drank water in a while reveal that they have more clarity and feelings than most other citizens who routinely drink it.
It's basically a form of mind control, and although I'm not sure the *exact* link it holds, it fits in somewhere. There's also an Evangelical Church integrated into the story, and perhaps they have some connection to releasing or creating the substances, because The Presence seems like some sort of reminder of God. When people see it, they freak the hell out. Church/Govt/Mind control - all related. - blizzok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Fnord
- mrFREEZE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"And that tells us what exactly?"
The file is an mp3. An mp3 is compressed. If this had really been a "leaked" track, the compression would have completely destroyed the image.
Look at the Aphex Twin album that did this if you still don't get it.
- Hacbarton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Reznor is a genius! I have to wonder who it was that found it though...seems kinda odd that they would just trust it in a bathroom if its viral marketing. Everything about parepin and opal and the Angry Sniper....this album better be f**king great.
- ohgr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You'll probably hate it then, if you're putting that much demand for it to be "f*cking great".
- 3dom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He has a point. If they're spending this much effort on hyping it, it better be f**kin great.

excuse me - i need to change my pants... - dweeb79, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I saw NiN live in Rochester NY, for the With Teeth tour and they are/was one of the greatest live bands ever. Funny I didn't care for the With Teeth album until I heard it live and it turned me around. After listening to this new track I have a feeling it will be the same with this upcoming album.
- dweeb79, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I saw Godsmack live and I loved their CD's however after watching them live I pretty much despised them and the same could be said for 30 seconds to Mars (just horrible), 3 Days Grace and hand full of other bands. NiN just has something special because he understands the art of performing, any singer can stand up and sing into a mic but when an artist gets up there and sounds better then their CD then they are a true artist. These bands now a days stand up and sing into a mic and let the computer do the work rather then their talent.
No offense taking even if u were having a go at me :)

Clause is written interestingly and the main thing actual. The same theme on Russian sites: http://pivo.in.ua http://www.alcogol.kiev.ua
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1They have fallen from grace, with teeth sucked a lot.
- nickarodriguez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9amazing song by an amazing artist.
- deadaluspark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16i just wish Trent would do an Exotic Birds reunion tour.
they rocked so much harder than NIN.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJYBx5NJULY- dweeb79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3THANKS for posting that, I never knew that and I'm impressed.
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's also the drummer from Stabbing Westward
- Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow.
He was goofy as ***** back then. - deadaluspark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5if you really appreciate it you'll digg up the story for it...
http://digg.com/videos/music/Trent_Reznor_pre_NIN_In_a_lame_new_wave_band
im not trying to take away from all the cool stuff Trent is doing right now, just trying to make people remember he's just as human as the rest of us. - ShBm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wasn't Maynard from Tool in some crazy band like that? Way back.
- izzyb412, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you talking about Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty ShBm?
- unitedkronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like the track quite a lot, I'll be sure to check the album out when it's released... oh, and the track's 212 BPM. :)
- ruley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Number 23!!!
- ruley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Number 23!!!
- codywalton, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Awesome track. Year Zero is going to be the best NIN album yet.
- RedbeardUH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh...you've heard the music already?
- ShBm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I doubt it tops The Fragile/And All That Could Have Been. It seems like he's regressed, and this track seems more like something on The Downward Spiral than With Teeth, which is good imo.
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1I have to ask. Why is this on the front page?
digg x .deteriorate = NIN song on front page- scottevans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4free tunes, man!!!....thats why its on the front page
- SignificantMind, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i have been a NIN fan for a long time i find this song pretty much like classic albums(harder musics) and unlike the new album Trent you rock!
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Wow, it looks like NIN is going with some interesting underground marketing with this stuff. I've never enjoyed their music that much, but I have to applaud them for forging their own path to sell records
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16There's also a phone number that was discovered by discolored numbers on the back of a tour shirt.
You can hear a clip of the new single, Survival, from it: +13102951040
The shirt: http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u264/crazyrevgirl/nintourshirt.jpg- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Typo: Survivalism, not Survival :P
- ohgr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2You all are a ***** criminal, so ***** act like it...
Deep dude.. deep.
- floydax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Lisbon, not Libson.

- Nass, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2THIS GUY'S LINK FOR HIS DIGG STORY IS DEAD.
GO HERE INSTEAD THIS ONE WILL NEVER GO DOWN:
http://digg.com/music/Happy_Valentine_s_Day_from_Nine_Inch_Nails_Song_My_Violent_Heart_Leaks- Nass, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The people burying my comment obviously are not reading it because the link is dead on this person's story, if you go to mine you'll see the link is working and has more information. Please go there and digg it so people will get properly linked.
- 3dom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dugg you up because you are right, but I followed the link and all of those hosts are down too. Someone please put this up on a decent hosting site. Also, megaupload has been taking down all the links because they break the TOS (does this mean it wasnt an intentional leak and they've all been dmca'd in the last few hours? Improbable, but why else would they take it down)
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4For anyone interested in making these images in sounds, you can use Coagula: http://www.sonicspot.com/coagula/coagula.html
It was fun hearing what tubgirl sounded like in .wav form.- qualish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What a horrible image to test it with.
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1But the sound it made was so amazing!
- BradGroux, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Year Zero is going to be one hell of an album... Trent, you're the man even if you are a tree-hugging-Bush-hating-wack-job =)
Give me the Beside You in Time on HD DVD... kthxbye.- bumblescrump, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5you're dumb.
- dadiggdog, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1N I N RULZ
BUT -----S P A M- synchestric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The irony.
- Hacbarton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7the song is amazing. Trent, in an interview, said it would be like Public Enemy, he compared it to a "noise collage". I agree with that sentiment. By the way, Sockpuppets, how did you guess to enter it into Fruity Loops? What do you know that you aren't telling us?!? (jk) Good call, and beware the Presence.
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any strange static sounds you hear like that should clue you into a spectrum analysis.
Most people aren't familiar with it, but if you aren't... you are now!
Pretty much any strange shift in sound patterns like that could be attributed to something hidden.... or just noise.
Aphex Twin did this a while back as well. It's one of those things where you don't know really unless you've heard it or experienced it before.

- Prod1gy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7http://myspace.com/nineinchnailsyearzero
another link for downloading. the flanged white noise added an extra 5 MB to the mp3 so I had to cut that out for the upload.
my stutter edit is also on it :]- 3dom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't digg this guy down. It's the only ***** working link left in the entire thread.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Brilliant, perhaps the first time in recorded history that someone has both given and taken a leak at the same time.
- dangerousnerd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Anyone got the file? It went down before I could get it. This is wicked cool.
- skylark888, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Total viral marketing. This is bogus.
- mlock2k, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3he was in a bathroom stall with George Michael ?
