- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+58"5. thesixtyone: This website offers music lovers great music to listen to, but not to download..."
False, you can download about a third of the songs on the site.- iziizi, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6and buy the rest if you want. only around 5% of the music on there you can not buy or download.
- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1correct. i don't know why artists upload music that you can't buy or download. maybe they're waiting for a record contract to come through? lol
- Scranklin, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4I put my songs on non download just as a precaution, I guess I just don't want to risk someone nabbing my stuff and putting it in a media outlet without giving me credit.
I'm a sissy.
But I love you. - brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1meh, that makes sense.
- Scranklin, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4I put my songs on non download just as a precaution, I guess I just don't want to risk someone nabbing my stuff and putting it in a media outlet without giving me credit.

- hmunkey, on 06/17/2008, -1/+9I love that site. It's a fun way to listen to music, kinda like a game actually.
- Scopitone, on 06/17/2008, -3/+6Too bad it was flashmobbed by Secondlife nutjobs.
- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+9srsly, what's up with that? i get sick of seeing SL avatars while i'm listening to the Rack. when i see one, i usually hit the "don't ever, ever, ever play again" button.
- Scopitone, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5They need a separate genre for themselves as 90% of the time their music is so jarringly terrible that you stop what you're working on to discover WHAT is making the noise. Surprise! It's an anthropomorphic fox with a "red rocket" wailing away on his guitar, or (my favorite) a morbidly obese woman butchering some soul music with some Paris Hilton avatar.
In the "normal world" we'd never have to hear their crap. But because there are so many of "them" bumping up their shared crap, it makes it to the front page all too often. - brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4omg that has totally happened - i've been like "wth is annoying me right now?" and then i switch over and see some digital avatar of a guy in a hawaiian shirt with 200 BUMPS! those cannot be legit...

- CCoe, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5I'm with you with the SL annoyance. Sometimes one of these horrible songs hit the front page, solely on the strength of the SL community in The Sixty One. They don't care about whether the music is horrifyingly terrible (mostly the case) or not, they are deaf supporters. I'm so sick of their "woohoo!" rallying cries.
- Scopitone, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4If they don't curb that community, it could be the death of a potentially great site because in addition to enduring their circle jerk of crap tunes, they're bumping up some equally ear raping stuff.
*****, now they're going to flash mob digg!
- Scopitone, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4If they don't curb that community, it could be the death of a potentially great site because in addition to enduring their circle jerk of crap tunes, they're bumping up some equally ear raping stuff.

- AngryAndrew, on 06/17/2008, -4/+26Thesixtyone is a great music website.
However, the article says that the music is not downloadable.
This is incorrect, as some songs are available for download, while others you may purchase.
another great site to find music = www.loudfusion.com
where you are able to download whatever you find (need to register) - blynder, on 06/17/2008, -1/+8I had no idea that there were this many music sites floating around.
- xtremeohio, on 06/17/2008, -0/+25I was a huge Pandora fan until it was blocked at my work. I nearly went crazy from withdrawal until I found thesixtyone which has actually been more fun.
I played with last.fm for a little bit but didn't find it to be instantly accessible (which is what my 4-year old brain needs).- rockandrollmark, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4I was a huge fan until it was blocked in canada! :(
- Zaxcomp, on 06/17/2008, -2/+15Phew, glad to see thesixtyone on there. Fantastic site, plenty to download as well.
- ImOnlySleeping, on 06/17/2008, -1/+10I used to use pandora daily until they banned all non-usa usage.
I've tried a few of those sites out and will have to check out some of others. - Weip, on 06/17/2008, -4/+8I discovered T61 here on digg and now I can't go anywhere else, probably the best one! I used to use Pandora, but they banned Canada. GTFO Pandora!
- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3that's weird, i wonder why pandora is banning all these other countries?
- xtmno3, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4IIRC it isn't Pandora doing it, but rather the stipulations being put on them. They close access from other countries because they can't pay the fees to stream it to there.
- Weip, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Isn't the same law for Last.fm?
- xtmno3, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4IIRC it isn't Pandora doing it, but rather the stipulations being put on them. They close access from other countries because they can't pay the fees to stream it to there.
- rationalbeats, on 06/17/2008, -3/+2Pandora did not ban Canada, Canada banned Pandora.
Please get it straight.
If Canada had modern day licensing contracts then you would have Pandora. But Canada is still stuck in the dark ages when it comes to technology and licensing.
Idiot.
- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3that's weird, i wonder why pandora is banning all these other countries?
- petomni, on 06/17/2008, -9/+3thesixtyonespam!
ok i listen to them all the time too. - SteVisDiggn, on 06/17/2008, -0/+13For music discovery, all you need is last.fm, pandora, and thesixtyone.com... thesixtyone.com is especially great for smaller artists that wouldn't otherwise be heard by the masses.
- Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1I had my own quick start menu for lastfm too
http://trueartnow.com/lastfm/indexlastfm.htm
I jump between the various services when things start to feel a little stale
- Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1I had my own quick start menu for lastfm too
- m4th13u, on 06/17/2008, -0/+14Seems like there's a lot of the 61 users here :)
- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4I went from Pandora to Finetune to Deezer to Last.fm to thesixtyone. I still use Deezer and thesixtyone.
- SteVisDiggn, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2Yeah I'm a new thesixtyone user and an avid last.fm user. I think for t61 to make a jump in popularity it needs to partner with last.fm.
- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3i've heard other people say that too. i can't see it happening, but you never know. t61's been hovering at about an average of 3-5k consecutive listeners throughout the day. i really hope that number busts 10k soon. maybe a merger is what they need.
of course, they are still in beta, so maybe it's too early to tell.

- emaredubyou, on 06/17/2008, -1/+7thats because theres a giant link on t61 homepage to here.
- MrSkills, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6It's also because a massive proportion of t61 users originally found it through Digg
- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5including me.
- brianmcculloh, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4I went from Pandora to Finetune to Deezer to Last.fm to thesixtyone. I still use Deezer and thesixtyone.
- luke16, on 06/17/2008, -6/+25"Dear Pandora Visitor,
We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative."
...
Well ***** you too.- rationalbeats, on 06/17/2008, -4/+7You should say ***** you to the politicians who have draconian laws that don't allow music to be played over the internet LEGALLY in your backwards country.
- i11uminati, on 06/17/2008, -3/+51They forgot to mention thepiratebay.org
- fireproofsoul25, on 06/18/2008, -1/+0I see what you did there.
- KyleWahlquist, on 06/17/2008, -10/+161 fanboy
- pacificislandr4, on 06/17/2008, -1/+7Dugg for the sixtyone.com. But I don't agree with the article's description of the site as "kind of like American Idol on steroids." Even though describing something "...on steroids" is one of my favorite cliches, thesixtyone is focused on hearing new music and sharing it with others by "bumping" it to the home page. It doesn't "judge" and dissect music as a way to ultimately choose a winner.
- DiggieDarko, on 06/17/2008, -4/+3There's no such thing as free.
- SteVisDiggn, on 06/18/2008, -0/+0True... you dedicate time. It's worth it though - if you're a music fan.
- WhiteHowler, on 06/17/2008, -2/+3How about "thesixtyone is like American Idol on crack"? Well, no, it's not really. It's a listener-driven artist showcase with experience points built in.
Also, what's with the hate toward Pandora for blocking access from non-USA countries? It's not like they want to alienate anyone -- record companies are really strict about that stuff, and getting an international license on something is a huge undertaking (especially since the same song might have a dozen different rights-holders depending on which country you're in). - Gbobrt4, on 06/17/2008, -1/+5So here are the 45 sites for free porn downloading......sorry wrong thread.
- PorkTornado1102, on 06/17/2008, -3/+2Don't forget http://bt.etree.org.
HIGHly recommended. - sambearpoet, on 06/17/2008, -3/+5I really love http://thesixtyone.com !
- gobbstopp, on 06/17/2008, -2/+2i was highly addicted to garageband for a good 2-3 years. not only can you find great unknown bands, but you can really get good feedback about the music you make/submit. great site if you can weed through the naysayers and immaturity (like any online community)..
- faceless323, on 06/17/2008, -3/+3I listen to live365. It has a lot of online radio stations. Whenever i want to rip songs from a station I use mp3 vcr.
http://www.live365.com/index.live
http://www.mp3vcr.com/
why does my comment read like spam? ***** THE RIAA- Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2I subscribed to live365 for awhile.
They had a Psychobilly station that was pretty cool.
- Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2I subscribed to live365 for awhile.
- ElBeh, on 06/17/2008, -3/+2Songbird + Skreemr is awesome.
- tunapez, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2Great list, a few I never heard of.
#11. Live Music Archive... THE Internet Archive!
To appreciate only the 55,000+ live, hi-quality shows is an injustice, snoop around, that's the tip of the iceberg. - Jennica, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2I found thesixtyone from this directory of web 2.0 sites
- whataboutdave, on 06/17/2008, -4/+1Buried for Ruckus. That thing is a piece of garbage.
- wontstoptalking, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5Playlist.com has still proven to be the best for me. Of all the other ones that claim those abilites, nothing beats playlist.com's abilities to:
1.)Type in the name of your desired song, possibly with name of artist for specification, into the search bar
2.)Browse through the list, clicking the play button to get a preview until you find one that is the song you are looking for
3.)Click "visit site"
4.)Copy the URL (that has to end with .mp3!) found in the frame at the top into the address bar
5.)File->Save as, save to desktop,
6.)PROFIT!!!
7.)Enjoy!- pokedex, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Aren't these guys getting sued into oblivion for that whole "PROFIT!!!" thing?
- dib2, on 06/17/2008, -2/+3Anyone else use youtube? I find it really quite useful.
- Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1Love it.
I made a menu for some of the Indie artists there last year
http://TrueArtNow.com
I made one the month before, for better known artists
http://Thrilltone.com
- Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1Love it.
- paranoiabacon, on 06/17/2008, -4/+246. thepiratebay.org
- paranoiabacon, on 06/18/2008, -1/+2Yeah digg me down, but you and I both know it's just cause the truth hurts.
- sinisa10, on 06/17/2008, -3/+1I use piratebay as well, but thanks for this, too
- Inthenameofmine, on 06/17/2008, -3/+1I wonder what a Thesixtyone + Digg cooperation would look like. I mean, it's basically the same idea and the communities aren't that different.
Some unknown artist could finally get the attention they need and Digg would be more "complete", as a user you wouldn't have to go to any other site to vote anymore. and this would probably bring a lot of quality traffic to digg.
I don't mean digg should buy t61, I mean a collaboration. The guys from t61 do their thing and the guys from digg theirs, just to guarantee that people work on what they actually care about.
Just an idea guys.^^ *Hoping Kevin Rose reads this*- pokedex, on 06/17/2008, -2/+1They're actually quite different. I do, however, think it'd be cool if Digg and thesixtyone worked together to allow people to play audio from Digg.
- Honchy, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1TheSixtyOne even replaces my iTunes sometimes so, even if I CAN download some songs, I don't really need to!
- Ramenamen, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2Why isn't SkreemR on that list? It's what I use all but exclusively.
- myFriendDerrik, on 06/17/2008, -2/+2Shameless self plug: http://www.moodrex.com/
- Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1Derrik, how do I get it to search for a new artist?
I typed in the new artist but it's stuck playing songs based on my first selection.
Pandora is the only place I've found that had Deadbolt available- myFriendDerrik, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Clicking on the little red X will remove stuff from your library. Thanks for checking us out!
- myhandleondigg, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1I'm not sure why, but I got a popup asking for my Flash debugger application on your site. Never seen that message before.
- myFriendDerrik, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1mxmlc --debug blah.mxml generates a swf I can debug. That shouldn't be on production, we'll replace it with a normal one.
- Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1Derrik, how do I get it to search for a new artist?
- Ozzsanity, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1Thesixtyone has a great artist called VE. Some of the best music ever. I will go as far as to say at times it rivals Floyd and it is all done by one man.
- brianmcculloh, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I wish Ve would put out some more music. He doesn't seem to be that interested in going places with his music. It's like he's just doing it because he enjoys it. What the heck?
- Ozzsanity, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I would think with music that good he could get a record deal. I sure would like to hear his songs done with some serious studio equipment.
- brianmcculloh, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I wish Ve would put out some more music. He doesn't seem to be that interested in going places with his music. It's like he's just doing it because he enjoys it. What the heck?
- Wackoman, on 06/17/2008, -2/+2The Hype Machine is decent too.
It scans a bunch of music blogs and presents the music and stories.
http://hypem.com/ - Thrilltone, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1I like the Thesixtyone too
but Pandora is great for building stations.
Anybody got a Pandora station built for any of the many genres that I'm missing here?
http://TheHolyGrail.biz - bballbackus, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3Where are What.cd Waffles.fm?
- speneko, on 06/18/2008, -0/+0That is really all I use as well... Probably not on this list because they are private sites or something...
- Jennefah, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I thought they were only a legend. I heard talk of a mass pink army who populated these lands and sealed the gates against newcomers. Something like the masons only with more pork.
I don't know anyone with an invite so I'm grumpilly happy they didn't make the list. - SteVisDiggn, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I'm with Jennefah... since the RIAA made pink bacon for the suits I've been stranded on a painful island of despair (it sounds horrible, I know).
Got any invites? =]
- fantasyflamz, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I like music.download.com
- myhandleondigg, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1"Read the Allmusic blog or watch a music video, but by all means relax and have some fun. "
How corny.
edit: gosh, it gets better: "Metal rock rules! Get all of your metal rock, rock and roll and indie rock all on one comprehensive website and download the music that you like for free. Where as metal rock rules, Roxwel rocks!!". - silence7, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1http://www.beastiemixes.com Almost 1900 free Beastie Boys remixes from 90 talented DJ's and 1 not so talented DJ. (No sign-up to download)
http://www.mashtapes.com 13 mashup albums so far. - renagadex2, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I love streaming creativity.
- yourpalOZ, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I like it
- mysticpickle, on 06/18/2008, -0/+0They put Artists Direct on that list? The same Artists Direct that employs Media Defender? Granted it's #45 but that alone makes me want to bury this story as inaccurate >
- ultimate_ed, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I didn't see SOUNDCLICK on that list. Too bad, that's a site I've found a fair bit of decent music on, especially after mp3.com stopped being a music site.
- sreevatsa, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1amazing collection.....
these websites also do a great job:
1. http://www.muxtape.com
2. http://www.beemp3.com - never disappointed me
3. http://www.themusichutch.com/ - pigfister, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3pandora has been destroyed by the greedy riaa members demanding high royalties and Last.fm completely sucks since it was brought by the corporate scum CBS.
The BPI Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The RIAA Soundexchange Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The IFPI Are: The same anti consumer lot as listed above!
The MPAA Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX. - erocsteady, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1what about rcrdlbl.com ?
- kd1s, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1The only two I find worth it are Pandora and last.fm. I love how last.fm scrobbles my played iTunes and iPod tracks too, even if EWF comes up a little too often.
- cutebutnerdy, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I love the Pandora station, because I luv me some oldies.
- Rizoh, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1One for the bookmark. Thanks for sharing.
