Warner Music Group Pulls Music From Last.fm
blog.wired.com — Warner Music Group has confirmed that its music is no longer available through Last.fm's on-demand music streaming service.

- wintersland, on 06/07/2008, -5/+275"Last.fm had earlier pointed to the availability of free, on-demand music on its site as having had a promotional effect on sales, increasing them 58 percent. Apparently, Warner doesn't care much about that, and would prefer to get paid more for on-demand playback than Last.fm was willing to pay."
Great, so last.fm increase sales yet Warner still don't care? I feel more and more anger towards the music industry daily.- Phyltre, on 06/08/2008, -2/+41Look, at this rate, they can't help but slowly marginalize themselves. They're literally fighting against themselves now, no layers of abstraction.
Also, this is just another indication that "free" music leads to more music sales.- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -20/+1It ***** does not.
You're lying to yourself.
Try to sell free beers in a bar and see how your sales are going.
I can't believe people don't admit this.
I'd love to see a comparaison graph showing records sales and peer to peer usage.- MortVent, on 06/08/2008, -1/+9Yeah, I mean they should get rid of the radio stations... I mean letting folks listen to select tracks for free and all will not help sell a band's music at all...
- piwy, on 06/08/2008, -0/+11You do realise these people get paid by last.fm to put the music up there right? Last.fm is not p2p.
- mrsteveman1, on 06/08/2008, -1/+3Giving away beer means they have less beer to sell, giving away music means they can sell the exact same music to the same person again later.
Your analogy fails miserably
Second, music sales aren't down, CD sales are because they fill CDs with ***** CRAP, and now people can buy single songs and ignore the rest.
P2P has little to do with it, the music industry isn't being harmed all that much, and the actual harm is just the cost of doing business in this situation. If anything the bitching about P2P is just a bunch of executives sitting in a room somewhere, pissed off that these pirates are "getting away with it". - carleethian, on 06/08/2008, -1/+4you're an idiot
- ubercow13, on 06/08/2008, -2/+1i agree
- MortVent, on 06/08/2008, -1/+9Yeah, I mean they should get rid of the radio stations... I mean letting folks listen to select tracks for free and all will not help sell a band's music at all...
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -20/+1It ***** does not.
- reed311, on 06/08/2008, -30/+2Stealing music is OK because one time an independent band was discovered by doing so.
- tenspeedogbb, on 06/08/2008, -0/+29And Last.fm is stealing how? Record labels put it on there themselves. You don't download music from there, you listen to it online, and it's all legal and direct from the publisher.
- Lixie, on 06/08/2008, -1/+12Well, the end result of this should be musicians signing with other labels who will opt for the sales increase.
- H3adSho7, on 06/08/2008, -4/+1yarite. Like musicians signed to Warner realise or care what effect online sharing and free streaming has on their sales.
- Cattywampus, on 06/08/2008, -0/+15I think Wired misquoted itself. This article mentions that Last.fm boosted sales 58 percent, but the article linked to that statement says, "Free Music Boosts Last.fm's Traffic 58 Percent."
The article doesn't say anything about Last.fm increasing sales 58 percent, or about sales at all. There's a big difference between Last.fm increasing its page views, and it increasing music sales. - sb76117, on 06/08/2008, -1/+7Last.fm isn't exactly on-demand. I don't get to listen to any song I want, whenever I want. For that I go to songza.com or beemp3.com...
- sb76117, on 06/08/2008, -1/+19apparently warner doesn't want people to hear their artists... smart move
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -5/+1They had them pretty well listenend for years before last.fm. (and napster)
- sb76117, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1you tard. napster and last.fm are two completely different things. a modern equivalent would be comparing hulu to bittorrent.
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -5/+1They had them pretty well listenend for years before last.fm. (and napster)
- smurf22, on 06/08/2008, -16/+2"Great, so last.fm increase sales yet Warner still don't care? I feel more and more anger towards the music industry daily
Time warner doesn't care. I feel more and more anger towards your grammar every day. - RobotBuddha, on 06/08/2008, -0/+11For what it's worth, I typically buy two CDs worth of music a month. This year, all but one came about as a result of hearing a track on pandora, last.fm, or eggradio.
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -12/+1So?
Did you buy more CDs in the end?
Anyways, radios like pandora are actually good, the problem is with free on demand music.
This is just not possible.
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -12/+1So?
- Phyltre, on 06/08/2008, -2/+41Look, at this rate, they can't help but slowly marginalize themselves. They're literally fighting against themselves now, no layers of abstraction.
- kmotiv1, on 06/07/2008, -6/+95....and now WM is dead to the Internet.
- gplpark92, on 06/08/2008, -1/+14and Warner, there is NO way to end piracy, it just won't happen.
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -12/+1Once you'll have downloaded all the music recorded before 00's, what will you download next?
Because only ***** music was released since then... I wonder why?- int19h, on 06/08/2008, -1/+5You're just a conservative old man.
- Aensland, on 06/08/2008, -1/+5If your only source of music is a few mainstream channels no wonder you're only getting *****.
- Parkinsons, on 06/08/2008, -1/+3Bawwwww! Your music sounds like noise, Bawwwwww!
Get off my lawn!
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -12/+1Once you'll have downloaded all the music recorded before 00's, what will you download next?
- gplpark92, on 06/08/2008, -1/+14and Warner, there is NO way to end piracy, it just won't happen.
- tropican8, on 06/08/2008, -0/+137Warner Music Group has made a 20 Million dollar investment in a direct competitor to Last.fm. This isn't a surprising move.
- hdberk, on 06/08/2008, -1/+13What is this competitor? I'll use it if I can listen to their music for free.
- powatom, on 06/08/2008, -0/+3imeem is the competitor.
- DoTheFandango, on 06/08/2008, -2/+21It's called the radio, and WMG thinks it's the future of the 21st century.
- snowpatrol, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2RADIOOOO someone still loves you!
- quomen, on 06/08/2008, -4/+11Preserve Net Neutrality. In a non neutral internet Warner could pay that 20million to the ISPs to provide their only their content and significantly reduce the bandwidth to any competitors.
- hdberk, on 06/08/2008, -1/+13What is this competitor? I'll use it if I can listen to their music for free.
- JBabin3xB, on 06/08/2008, -18/+8That's gay
- ElBeh, on 06/08/2008, -1/+9Warner doesn't support any sort of sexual preference, actually.
- hdberk, on 06/08/2008, -2/+92This is dumb on their part. Last.fm is where I listen to an album before I buy it (legally). Last.fm is a great source of finding new artists, but if I can't listen to them then what's the point. This could lower sales.
- skywake, on 06/08/2008, -1/+38what I think Warner is trying to say is "listen to our music through torrents instead of last.fm" :P
- mathcreative, on 06/08/2008, -1/+1probably
- RobotBuddha, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2But how do I know about it in the first place? I have no problem buying music, I do have a problem actually hearing any that's worth it. Radio used to be a good source of information on new bands, before clear channel killed the medium. Self creating stations on the internet have been amazing for advertising purposes, but now WMG wants to make sure I never know abut any of their artists.
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -8/+1So you're going to buy something you already have?
People don't do that... sorry.- Seph7, on 06/08/2008, -0/+8Yes they do... All the CD's I've bought in the last 5 years I've listened to or obtained online before I've bought them, the exception is new releases from band's I already like which I normally just purchase directly. I've discovered loads of bands via last.fm as well, although the pattern for me is normally: 1. Listen on last.fm, 2. Download torrent, 3. Buy CD.
- CarnivalOfDust, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1I just buy them when I have the time. I downloaded 3 albums to help me revise for exams and I'll get on Amazon once the stress is over. And all of them were listened to on Youtube extensively beforehand - but I keep clicking on Warner links that tell me (on Youtube!) that I'm in the wrong location to listen. Warner are really stupid.
- Seph7, on 06/08/2008, -0/+8Yes they do... - mookieXL, on 06/08/2008, -0/+6And that's their problem with last.fm and stuff like that. They don't want people to have different tastes. They want everyone to buy same albums. Less work and more profit to them.
- wush, on 06/08/2008, -1/+2isn't it only the first 30 seconds of each track in most cases? that's not the greatest way to preview an album
- TheLD, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2Nope, last.fm has lots of full tracks as well. too bad they don't have as many now though.
- skywake, on 06/08/2008, -1/+38what I think Warner is trying to say is "listen to our music through torrents instead of last.fm" :P
- Nettles9, on 06/08/2008, -2/+54Another classic example of the record industry in a losing battle due to their inability to cope with modern trends.
- jeriqo, on 06/08/2008, -8/+1modern trends.. you mean stealing?
- powatom, on 06/08/2008, -0/+7Last.FM isn't stealing - you can only download tracks from there if the label itself has said you can (and most don't - only independent bands tend to, although bigger labels sometimes allow you to download a few tracks if they're trying to promote the band).
Last.FM is basically just internet radio, except you have a greater choice over the style of music you want to hear.
- powatom, on 06/08/2008, -0/+7Last.FM isn't stealing - you can only download tracks from there if the label itself has said you can (and most don't - only independent bands tend to, although bigger labels sometimes allow you to download a few tracks if they're trying to promote the band).

- HonkingAntelope, on 06/08/2008, -2/+29Less exposure it is!
- socivitus, on 06/08/2008, -24/+1Playlist.com > Last.fm
- karan1003, on 06/08/2008, -1/+2nonsense. They're both totally different.
- tidu, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1it's funny, projectplaylist is much more of a threat than last.fm because you can easily download mp3s from it.
- seldon452, on 06/08/2008, -3/+20Oh wow, the music industry screwing the internet.
I'm not surprised. The music industry continues to live in the stone age and refuses to embrace the internet and the new market.- Lousansano, on 06/08/2008, -1/+2No there just making there own ***** service. In other words there trying but failing hardcore.
- zalery, on 06/08/2008, -5/+148No more Nickelback? What will we ever do?
- Viriatus2, on 06/08/2008, -0/+4throw stones at them?
- ChristBehemoth, on 06/08/2008, -1/+1Believe It Or Not

- Soave, on 06/08/2008, -0/+3It's also not a trap at all.
- whereiseljefe, on 06/08/2008, -0/+53Last.fm is more than just listening to music, its also a social network where you can track your music playing and rate your music compatibility with other users. While somewhat lame I love seeing the stats on last.fm of my music usage.
Warner is going to have a HELL of a time dragging Last.fm and their users out of the trench they are in. Its nigh impossible to take out an existing social network due to a rabid fanbase. Look at Netscape's feeble attempt to take out Digg? You have to innovate to even hope to compete and making users pay is not innovation, its regression.- Soave, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2Yeah that's pretty much all I use Last.fm (formerly Audioscrobbler) for: music stats. And the radio stations are nice too.
The only thing I used the on-demand streaming for is figuring out if I recognize a song or seeing if I like it, which I can usually get a good idea of with the 30 second preview anyway.
Then I download the song for free on Ruckus (legally), and then strip the DRM (illegally). :)- MattBD, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1Yes, I don't use the on demand streaming much either. It's useful for listening to a song you hadn't heard before, but the 30 second preview is sufficient to see if you like it.
- powatom, on 06/08/2008, -2/+1It really isn't, unless you listen to ***** music which has no dynamics.
- MattBD, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1Yes, I don't use the on demand streaming much either. It's useful for listening to a song you hadn't heard before, but the 30 second preview is sufficient to see if you like it.

Death Cab for Cutie
I think they are doing people a public service here.- Lousansano, on 06/08/2008, -7/+31Death Cab is good cmon man, Nickelback bites ass though ill give you that
- sb76117, on 06/08/2008, -6/+6nickelback and death cab? oh nos!!! though i could do without nickleback i may miss some death cab.
- helikopter, on 06/08/2008, -0/+11it's cool, the best death cab records came out on barsuk anyway...
- jakobmakob, on 06/08/2008, -1/+2Anybody who says Death Cab sucks hasn't heard their last three albums, especially Plans and Narrow Stairs.
- AntzNZ, on 06/08/2008, -6/+22Oh damn no more Nickelback :(
/sarcasm- cgruber, on 06/08/2008, -0/+5I still hadn't forgiven Canada for Bryan Adams and then released that on us.
- qayyim, on 06/08/2008, -10/+0well it doesn't hurt last.fm and it doesn't hurt warner since most people on last.fm listen to indie music anyway, more indie than what warner has to offer

I for one assume the less connection CNN has with my music the better.
I await the day these people wake up and realize we couldn't care less. - ElBeh, on 06/08/2008, -0/+19Ah well, I really hope they don't pull out of Pandora. :(
- int19h, on 06/08/2008, -0/+4They pulled out when they started streaming to the US only.
- ElBeh, on 06/08/2008, -1/+2They started streaming to US-only because of legal issues. I'm sure in a year or two they'll go global again.
By the way, there are plenty of "Access US-only sites outside of the US" tools out there that can help you if you need it.
- Galaxylander, on 06/08/2008, -5/+16Good Job Warner. You've failed at the internet. Oh no! There's illegal content of yours on the internet! Better stomp your feet and make an alternative to the internet for millions of dollars only to find out nobody will use it.
The internet hates you.- twiztidsinz, on 06/08/2008, -1/+6Actually they pulled the LEGAL streaming music...
But good job not reading the article and making nonsensical comments.- Galaxylander, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1See problem is you never read my post correctly. I was saying that Warner should make a new internet because there is illegal content on the current one only to find out nobody will use it. I was saying that using their logic they should replace the internet like they 'replace' last FM
- twiztidsinz, on 06/08/2008, -1/+6Actually they pulled the LEGAL streaming music...
- karan1003, on 06/08/2008, -1/+4wow. They don't like to make it easy for us, do they?
- krypton70, on 06/08/2008, -1/+57So funny a friend just showed me Lastfm the other day and I bought three cds on iTunes due to the site. It's unbelievable how dense these guys are
- sb76117, on 06/08/2008, -1/+8and you got downmodded. congrats! i upped to even it out.
last.fm and pandora have broadened my musical tastes immensely, if warner decides they don't want me to hear their artists, so be it.
they are shooting themselves in the foot. plain and simple.
- sb76117, on 06/08/2008, -1/+8and you got downmodded. congrats! i upped to even it out.
- gamerzworld, on 06/08/2008, -11/+1Imeem is much better than Last.FM.
- bobhellbringer, on 06/08/2008, -2/+3i wish people could read the article before making assumptions based on the title and summary.
unless the people who don't know the whole story just have poor comprehension skills. - marshaling, on 06/08/2008, -3/+7I think we're going to start seeing more traditional media companies (whether in TV, Film or Music) start to pull away from websites like Last FM. For example, Fox and NBC pulled their content off of YouTube to create Hulu.com (which rocks by the way). Why would Fox and NBC post their content on YouTube for free, while YouTube collects the ad dollars?
Media companies will continue to use internet distributors until they can create their own form of internet distribution. In the end, content is king, and the companies that produce the content will continue to dominate the market. Of course if Warner doesn't have a brilliant idea in development, pulling content from Last FM seems foolish.
Thoughts?
Marshal McNiven- cadmiumpaint, on 06/08/2008, -2/+1i don't understand why they (hulu) offer "full screen" when the quality is piss poor. Looking at some NBA finals clips they were so pixelated they were unwatchable. I won't even waste my time if the quality is horrible.
- tian2992, on 06/08/2008, -0/+3Great and Insightful comment, sadly this comment suffers from the Pie-Syndrome, which is to sing your comment, just as the user "EatingPie" does.
Sebastian Oliva - KhemNakhi, on 06/08/2008, -1/+0I agree with Marshall. From a business perspective, Warner will capitalize more if they setup their own social site with the same concept as Last.FM.
I've only been to Hulu.com once and was blown away at how the TV/Film Industry can expand and accept the fact that the internet is where everything will shift to in the future instead of reject and deny it. When will the music industry learn?
- BlackwatchPlaid, on 06/08/2008, -1/+4death cab should've stayed with barsuk records. at least small labels don't try to ***** you quite as bad, even if they end up under an umbrella like warner.
- Travelsonic, on 06/08/2008, -3/+8All I can say is... those eeeeediots!
- Barackalypse, on 06/08/2008, -1/+22That's OK, Bittorrent will continue to have Warner Music Group "artists" available.
- DimensionalPunk, on 06/08/2008, -1/+39Last.FM is the only way I discover new music. I don't listen to the radio.
- MattBD, on 06/08/2008, -0/+5Likewise - the radio is crap nowadays. Although BBC 6 Music is very good, it's just about the only radio station I'd ever listen to, and it's even possible to scrobble your plays on it to Last.fm using their Radio Labs widgets.

- avnerlevit, on 06/08/2008, -0/+3I stopped downloading music torrents because of the likes of pandora, last.fm etc. Hell.. I actually even bought an album or 2. This just pisses me off and wanna go back to downloading torrents again...

- Twenty, on 06/08/2008, -0/+10I know this is going to sound pretentious or whatever, but *****, I love indie labels. And I love that so many bands I listen to are on indie labels (I wasn't actually aware until I checked on RIAA Radar a few weeks ago).
- mookieXL, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1See, that's the problem. To Warner&co, buying indie music is same as piracy. It's lost profit to them.
No, it's actually worse than piracy, since you also encourage competition.

- Spliced88, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1Hmmm... how can we get less people to listen to our music............... oh shi.......
- HappyDamnation, on 06/08/2008, -0/+3Alright, this is bull. This is like encouraging users to use piratical means to get their music.
- TheMachine1, on 06/08/2008, -0/+3This is the same company that thought AOL was the future on the Internet.
- gubatron2, on 06/08/2008, -0/+3***** THE RIAA! Go Indie, use the internet to promote your music.
- writie, on 06/11/2008, -0/+0Who mentioned the RIAA? This is Warner vs Last.fm.
- rb89, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2Good riddance. There's plenty of good musicians that aren't signed to Warner, and now that they're gone, maybe I can discover more of them.
- kingsal, on 06/08/2008, -5/+2what's last.fm?
- sfacets, on 06/08/2008, -1/+1Hmmm Just going to have to download it now.
- jedinate, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2Warner Music takes another step towards irrelevance.
So they are licensing the music to imeem now... Okaaaay?? I missed the memo that said you could only stream through one site now. - michaelGregoire, on 06/08/2008, -2/+2na na na na NA NA NA NA hey hey hey goodbye! frack the mainstream music industry.
- identitymatrix, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2This is pretty funny. I find new music through last.fm. While it is nice to look at a list of the top tracks, I also like to listen to the 30 second clips and sometimes they have the full clips up so that is also nice. If they don't have any clips I usually just move on, look for an artist that has the guts to put up a few 30 second clips at least. I mean an artist that isn't willing to at least give people a taste of what their music is like usually isn't that great of an artist. I've only bought 3 albums (2 physical and 1 downloaded from Amazon.com), but I never would have heard of VNV Nation, Code 64, or Diary of Dreams if it wasn't for those clips on Last.fm. I must say I love these artists and now that I recently started my first job, once I get my first paycheck I'll have some money to buy several more albums from them that I've been really wanting to buy as I listen to them on a nearly daily basis.
- DestroyFascism, on 06/08/2008, -1/+6Hear that Musicians with MASSIVE DEBTS to warner music? They don't want to promote you!!!!
Sue them!- nephilimx, on 06/08/2008, -1/+1Maybe they are in debt because all there sales were on last.fm, who payed peanutts compared to itunes and other sites?
- anticsantics, on 06/08/2008, -1/+0i really really dont like music record companoes lately. theyve been making very dumb decisions...lastfm has recommended so many new good bands; i go there alot. boo for them :(
- dariotjuh, on 06/08/2008, -1/+2Will they never learn? What will this do good for Warner Brother? The only thing this will resolve in is goodbye Last.fm and hello Pirate bay...
- Andreiii, on 06/08/2008, -1/+0They want money from selling CDs. Money, money, money....
