    • OpaqueMurdock, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2This only doesn't make sense if you take all the PR from the early "Filth and the Fury" days dead seriously. PR and creating an image for a band is a craft in itself. It was once said of Malcolm McLaren, (the person who hired the Rotten and Vicious and managed the band) that he was a shyster and would sell anything to any trend that he could grab onto. The person that said that was John Lydon himself.

      I don't think we were supposed to raise them to the status of the bands they hated and were trying to topple. Crass commercialism seems perfectly "punk" to me as it is something that an art rock band would NEVER do. This is just a big FU to everyone that took it a little too seriously.

      I'm not saying that some of the underlying message of the music didn't have roots in real feeling, but at some point it became a question of marketing... McLaren and to a lesser extent Lydon knew which side the bread was buttered on.

      No one likes the idea of being cheated... but for god sake, they told us they did it. lol

(I should know, I went to one of his gigs in '05. it was awesome.) and Johnny Rotten is being a spokesman for a ***** butter company, posing in robes in a clean kitchen telling people that "it's not about Great Britain, its about great butter!". I believe the facts state the obvious.

        so either playing concerts and singing punk songs suddenly stopped being "punk rock" and becoming a marketing tool is now "punk rock" or punk is officially dead.

He still releases music (instead of reappearing just to milk his past). Lydon went from angry-givemesomeattention-punk-rock-boy, to post-punk-hide-me-from-the-spotlight-artfag, to obscurity, to blatantly milking his past in a comical manner for more spotlight and money. That's basically his whole gag. "Yeah, I'm doing all this for the money, and I can because the Sex Pistols were so popular. Aren't I loveable?"
      • javaroast, on 10/10/2008, -1/+1Sorry Billy Idol doesn't win anything. Without the Sex Pistols there is no Generation X. PiL was a fantastic band and one of the best live shows I've ever seen. On top of it Lydon has been touring from the 70's until the current day. So yeah he's still performing. If you seen interviews Lydon's schtick has remained pretty consistent throught the ages.

        Oh and Lydon isn't alone in making some questionable commercials. Idol's rapping commercial for IKEA wasn't his proudest moment.

Rotten was genuine at the time and it's not like they changed his image any. Maybe you don't like the Sex Pistols but there's no denying the amount of punk acts that resulted from their music and their shows.

        There is no denying that Lydon and McLaren were smart by taking the opportunity to latch on to an upswing of a new trend and making some money off it.

    He is quite a talented musician and has very interesting political views. He's definitely a pop-culture icon that he wasn't 30 years ago. TV commercials with him in them don't seem particularly weird to me.

And what could be more anti than a butter commercial, anyway? He's a performance artist. Consider it a comment on public image if you need to.
