- shutaro, on 10/03/2008, -3/+41I don't know that I'd buy a vacuum from a zombie, tho...
- Synn, on 10/03/2008, -0/+13I know I WOULD buy one from a zombie...especially if it was zombie Joey Ramone.
- HillerMylife, on 10/03/2008, -1/+20Maybe he's just really passionate about butter.

- Technopundit, on 10/04/2008, -0/+1Punk is NOT DEAD!
It just smells that way.
- OpaqueMurdock, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2This only doesn't make sense if you take all the PR from the early "Filth and the Fury" days dead seriously. PR and creating an image for a band is a craft in itself. It was once said of Malcolm McLaren, (the person who hired the Rotten and Vicious and managed the band) that he was a shyster and would sell anything to any trend that he could grab onto. The person that said that was John Lydon himself.
I don't think we were supposed to raise them to the status of the bands they hated and were trying to topple. Crass commercialism seems perfectly "punk" to me as it is something that an art rock band would NEVER do. This is just a big FU to everyone that took it a little too seriously.
I'm not saying that some of the underlying message of the music didn't have roots in real feeling, but at some point it became a question of marketing... McLaren and to a lesser extent Lydon knew which side the bread was buttered on.
No one likes the idea of being cheated... but for god sake, they told us they did it. lol - SPRFRKR, on 10/03/2008, -2/+1"What's next, Joey Ramone slinging vacuums?"
They already had Fred Astaire doing that. I doubt he would have been happy dancing with a vacuum when he was alive. - Krysis, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2Ever see a "Go Phone" commercial? Blitzkrieg Bop is used. i bet that wouldn't have gone over if Joey was alive.
- morehands, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1He retired Johnny Rotten a long time ago, he is now John Lydon, not the same punk, never intended to be, listen to 'into the black'

- Dejacque, on 10/03/2008, -0/+0Asbury Park! I miss New Jersey. :(
- dxgg, on 10/03/2008, -3/+9Johnny Rotten seriously conjured up the thought of Billy Idol? My god, please don't tell me you think Billy Idol was actually a punk rocker.
(yes, I'm getting on my old school musical high horse on this one...okay, getting down now). ;)- dizavin, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4Billy Idol is touring and rocking it hard. (I should know, I went to one of his gigs in '05. it was awesome.) and Johnny Rotten is being a spokesman for a ***** butter company, posing in robes in a clean kitchen telling people that "it's not about Great Britain, its about great butter!". I believe the facts state the obvious.
so either playing concerts and singing punk songs suddenly stopped being "punk rock" and becoming a marketing tool is now "punk rock" or punk is officially dead. - Dejacque, on 10/03/2008, -4/+3Billy Idol is as punk rock as Fall Out Boy.
- poxonyou, on 10/03/2008, -2/+4Billy Idol wins in the long run. He was in a punk band in 1975, Generation X. He has been fairly consistent about himself. He still releases music (instead of reappearing just to milk his past). Lydon went from angry-givemesomeattention-punk-rock-boy, to post-punk-hide-me-from-the-spotlight-artfag, to obscurity, to blatantly milking his past in a comical manner for more spotlight and money. That's basically his whole gag. "Yeah, I'm doing all this for the money, and I can because the Sex Pistols were so popular. Aren't I loveable?"
- javaroast, on 10/10/2008, -1/+1Sorry Billy Idol doesn't win anything. Without the Sex Pistols there is no Generation X. PiL was a fantastic band and one of the best live shows I've ever seen. On top of it Lydon has been touring from the 70's until the current day. So yeah he's still performing. If you seen interviews Lydon's schtick has remained pretty consistent throught the ages.
Oh and Lydon isn't alone in making some questionable commercials. Idol's rapping commercial for IKEA wasn't his proudest moment.

- dizavin, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2yeah, next thing you'll see is an Rotten wearing a tweed jacket, pushing a wheelbarrow full of eels down a cobble street to a blackforest pub where he confides in the barkeep that he has The Consumption and how the taxes keep him working at night.
- pentupentropy, on 10/03/2008, -6/+11this is shameful

- Turbojugend27, on 10/03/2008, -18/+9***** the Sex Pistols anyway, they were always just a gimmick band. It was always all about Sid Vicious (who didn't even play bass on most of the their studio recordings) and nothing else.

Sorry Johnny Rotten!

- KillsTheWeak, on 10/03/2008, -2/+2Starts off cheap, just takes more after you start getting used to it. In the Seattle area, 20 bucks gets you a weeks worth, a clean needle and a tourniquet. Sides it was Sid that was the druggy.

My my, hey hey
Rock and roll is here to stay
It's better to burn out
Than to fade away
My my, hey hey.
Out of the blue and into the black
They give you this, but you pay for that
And once you're gone, you can never come back
When you're out of the blue and into the black.
The king is gone but he's not forgotten
This is the story of a johnny rotten
It's better to burn out than it is to rust
The king is gone but he's not forgotten.
Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.- fiji5555, on 10/03/2008, -4/+6wow I'm being dug down for the above? lmao whatever......guess some people can't handle the truth......this guy couldn't handle Johnny selling butter.......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZimbxYoRe2U&feature ...

- knupso, on 10/03/2008, -10/+25Johnny Rotten was no bad ass and the sex pistols were nothing but a punk boy band put together by Malcolm McLaren.
Their music sucks and they were "sellouts" from the word go.- jbmcb, on 10/03/2008, -1/+19Clash FTW.
- OTRtwist, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Sid didn't even know how to play bass, they didn't even bother turning his amp on. I saw it in some documentary about the pistols. Yet I've heard people claim he was the greatest bass player of all time. I guess that shows how far an image can take you.
- llamaspit, on 10/03/2008, -1/+6And the fact that they were sellouts from the word go makes them more punk than anything else.
- knupso, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3No there is no more punk or less punk. There is just punk.
Either you are or you aren't.
I'm not denying that they were punk. I am just saying the Sex Pistol were more or less formed and promoted to make a quick buck on an emerging trend.
They were essentially punks version of a boy band.
Their music still sucks and they were pretty lacking in the talent department all the same.
- knupso, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3No there is no more punk or less punk. There is just punk.
- ElGigi, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Anti-nowhere League FTW

- commiecat, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4McLaren was responsible for recruiting Rotten into the band, but they were a far stretch from a punk boy band. Rotten was genuine at the time and it's not like they changed his image any. Maybe you don't like the Sex Pistols but there's no denying the amount of punk acts that resulted from their music and their shows.
There's nothing like going on national television and just not giving a *****:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRNOUz7uefA- knupso, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3*****!
Yes there is denying the amount of punk acts that resulted from the Sex Pistols.
Punk would have done just fine without them.
There is no denying that Lydon and McLaren were smart by taking the opportunity to latch on to an upswing of a new trend and making some money off it.
- knupso, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3*****!
- malbertsen, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2Whatever, Public Image Ltd were fantastic.
- AmplifiedMedia, on 10/04/2008, -0/+3Here here!!
This is just another example of Punk ideology gone corporate - PUNK never was the Sex Pistols anyway - they were manufactured dolls to re-sell a REAL concept that was NY 1973-76 PUNK. God Save The Ramones!!
For real punk history read "Please Kill Me" by Legs McNeil & Gillian McCain.........
And I agree with malbertsen - Public Image were good...
- jbmcb, on 10/03/2008, -1/+19Clash FTW.
- diggzoid, on 10/03/2008, -2/+18Oh wait a minute, Johnny Rotten was once really authentic. Right... and Malcolm Mclaren just happened to come along at just the right moment. This is really just Lydon doing what he always has done; playing a parody of himself.
- jason210, on 10/03/2008, -2/+5exactly. hes a smart dude. he makes fun of idiots by acting idiotic. he makes fun of selling out by selling out.
Its what punk rock truly is about. its called sarcasm.

- reuscel, on 10/03/2008, -14/+12"Punk is Dead" by Crass 1978
Yes that's right, punk is dead,
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors,
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.
CBS promote the Clash,
But it ain't for revolution, it's just for cash.
Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be
And it ain't got a thing to do with you or me.
Movements are systems and systems kill.
Movements are expressions of the public will.
Punk became a movement cos we all felt lost,
But the leaders sold out and now we all pay the cost.
Punk narcissism was social napalm,
Steve Jones started doing real harm.
Preaching revolution, anarchy and change
As he sucked from the system that had given him his name.
Well I'm tired of staring through ***** stained glass,
Tired of staring up a superstars arse,
I've got an arse and crap and a name,
I'm just waiting for my fifteen minutes fame.
Steve Jones you're napalm,
If you're so pretty (vacant) why do you swarm?
Patti Smith you're napalm,
You write with your hand but it's Rimbaud's arm.
And me, yes I, do I want to burn?
Is there something I can learn?
Do I need a business man to promote my angle?
Can I resist the carrots that fame and fortune dangle?
I see the velvet zippies in their bondage gear,
The social elite with safety-pins in their ear,
I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing,
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.- hmmmok, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4Do you really believe in butter?

and crass sucks. - flashingcurser, on 10/03/2008, -3/+20John Lydon had done a lot of things other than be "Johnny Rotton" of the sex pistols.

He is quite a talented musician and has very interesting political views. He's definitely a pop-culture icon that he wasn't 30 years ago. TV commercials with him in them don't seem particularly weird to me.- drexl, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4PIL ***** rocked!
- yurimxpxman, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2"He is quite a talented musician"
That's funny. He can't even play the guitar.

That advert sucks and I'm gutted hes still considered an icon. He was in a manufactured band for about 10 mins and tbh I love punk music but Sex Pistols are, in my opinion, *****. - GiJoeBob, on 10/03/2008, -1/+11He was always all style and no substance.
- llamaspit, on 10/03/2008, -4/+2And that, my friend defines punk.

- xcbxcb, on 10/03/2008, -12/+6I'd like to point out that the Sex Pistols were never punk, but were simply commercialized nonsense in the vein of Rage Against the Machine or any other overly managed, pre-fab nonsense.
Crass FTW. - Phelyx, on 10/03/2008, -2/+9So John Lydon should just sit around without paychecks and continue to represent your idea of punk rock for you? I must assume that whoever calls him greedy doesn't work for anyone and doesn't "sell out" to pay the bills. Seriously, isn't the fantasy of the FTW/DIY punk played out yet? And what could be more anti than a butter commercial, anyway? He's a performance artist. Consider it a comment on public image if you need to.
