iTunes still tops music charts; Amazon primed for growth?
arstechnica.com — The iTunes Store is still sittin' pretty at the number one spot among all music retailers, at least according to the NPD Group for the first half of 2008. Although Apple will continue to lead for some time, Amazon appears to be the sleeping giant that's just beginning to flex its muscles.

- rspeed, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Agreed. The more Amazon's MP3 store grows, the more pressure it'll put on Apple to keep iTunes moving forward.
- bamafun, on 08/06/2008, -0/+5I love Unbox Video Delivery at Amazon - If you haven't tried it, you should!
- xanadistic, on 08/06/2008, -1/+0The mp3s from Amazon sound better than the files from iTunes, and you can play the Amazon DRM-free mp3s anywhere so that is nice. There is something more personal about the Amazon experience. I still use iTunes to organize my music, but I don't buy anything from them.
- portorikan, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1I don't think Amazon mp3 sound better than itunes at all. Also, mp3 is old technology, AAC is smaller file size and better sounding compression. Why back track to older technology? Even cell phones can read AAC files, so it seems pointless to go back to something that creates a bigger file size at a poorer quality.
Sadly, what people don't realize is that the RIAA is using amazon mp3 to try to knock itunes off of the top stop, IF that happens, get ready for pricing to increase and maybe even for DRM to return.
The ONLY reason itunes doesn't have DRM Free music is because the RIAA and labels DO NOT WANT IT TO.
Sadly, people are playing into the RIAA's plans buying from Amazon.
