Ops. That was supposed to be aimed at Rex84 - merreborn, on 03/09/2008, -3/+6This is a really common technique for games from that era. That's why you fight the same enemies in different colors all the time too -- like the various colors of skeletons in the Golden Axe series. They only had so much memory to store sprites in, but you could get extra mileage out of a sprite by "palette shifting" it -- using the same sprite with different colors.
The NES could only handle 64 sprites:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/NES_Programming- dtfinch, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2The NES supported two pattern tables of 256 8x8 tiles each. The 64 sprite limit has nothing to do with the background.

- Cedargrove, on 03/09/2008, -14/+2 I get what you're saying but... it's just a word, a collection of sounds our bodies produce. I know that their beginnings were rooted in disdain for homosexuals but it's reached a point where the words can become placeholders. If I tell my friend to "stop being gay", he's probably doing nothing associated with homosexuality and the thought of literal gays doesn't cross my mind. Again, I know it seems insulting to allow a label to replace other terms like annoying or weird but the intention is still outside of the humans who are homosexual. In a way it's based in confusion. I respect gay men, get married, do whatever I don't care, it's not affecting mine or anyone elses life, but it's still weird to me. Honestly it's gross, yet I have the human right to contain my emotion without displacing it on others. It has nothing to do with anyone else. If you friend calls you at 3 in the morning and needs you to get him out of jail, you do it because they're your friend, but it still sucks. Nobody wants to wake up and deal with that, but it's ok to be upset with the situation without connecting that anger to your friend. We can choose to separate our feelings and projections.
I know that this is no solace to homosexuals who are offended by certain terms. We must understand that this is partly how language works. Words, concrete symbols, creates an illusion of consistency. Remember when gay culturally meant happy? How many current Christmas carols would use the word gay?
You can choose not to be offended by the direct, or indirect, connection to hatred without it excusing their actions. They're just words.- xxpor, on 03/09/2008, -0/+11buried for wall of text

- frogman54, on 03/08/2008, -44/+78You can digg me down 80 times too, I don't give a *****, but using ***** was really unnecessary. Dumbass, douchebag, donkey fluffer, buttmunch, fish monger, tampon sniffer, parrot fondler, goat ball licker, cat juggler, stupid head times a million, anal aviator, wombat molester, quicker picker upper, wanker, moron, bitchass mofo, David Hasselhoff...and I can think of a hundred more. There are plenty to choose from...so WHY...tell me please...must we insist on using such a hateful word?
- radsprack, on 03/08/2008, -22/+54Why do you insist on making such a big deal out of it?
- frogman54, on 03/08/2008, -23/+20My best friend is gay and it's a big deal to him. I suppose you have to see someone you care about being hated for no good reason to understand. Whenever I see or hear that word it just upsets me. I don't necessarily think the cartoon was bigoted, but I don't think any humor would have been lost by using a comparable insult that wasn't extremely offensive to 10 percent of the population. The more you use the word, the more people think it is okay to use, even if hate isn't your intention.
- DiggLive, on 03/08/2008, -15/+18Sure, your "friend"...
- fakekevinrose, on 03/09/2008, -2/+18your friend thanks you for taking offense for him
- melonade, on 03/09/2008, -3/+9My best friend is a parrot fondler... why you gotta hate?
- ozydingo, on 03/08/2008, -14/+13Well first of all, let him complain about it, not you. Honestly I don't see what the big deal is. It's not intended as derogatory, and it's just a word. Gay friends I've talked to about it don't really seem to give a ***** unless you're calling them a ***** in an intentionally derogatory manner. Language is an arbitrary set of symbols intended to convey an intended meaning, so why get upset if the intended meaning has nothing to do with what you're trying to get upset about?
- frogman54, on 03/08/2008, -16/+13Screw that...he's my friend...you insult him...you insult me. I'm not going to be complacent because the word isn't targeted towards me directly. Look, political correctness by oversensitive word nazi's annoys me just as much as it does most people, but ***** and ***** are two words that just don't need to be in one's vocabulary. They aren't just words. The bigots over the years have used these words to encompass all of their feelings of hate and intolerance into just two syllables. And even in an instance when these words are not used with that intent...it is a clear reminder of times in which they were. Two words...that's all. Is it really going to have a tangible effect on anyone's life if they just stop using two words?
- ozydingo, on 03/08/2008, -3/+8Fair enough, fair enough. I suppose you have a point. Mainly, since it's not me at the receiving end, I'm not going to hold my opinion as any sort of authority. I still don't understand why it has to be considered such a big deal, reminder of prior times or not, if the meaning is not a derogatory one. But you're right, I suppose, that no, it won't have a huge effect on anyone's life to simply drop those two words.
- mradules, on 03/09/2008, -3/+6That's a bit naive. Just because the hateful meaning has been supposedly stripped from the word doesn't change much. The fact that the word has two meanings, one to refer to a homosexual negatively and one to put someone down, indicates it's a negative word. You can't use a negative word that also refers to a specific group of people without offending some of them. No one wants a term they identify with to become an insult.

Whether you're gay, or have a gay family member or friend, does it make the word any less offensive? What if the word was "kike" or "*****"? - Zyphron, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Except that ***** for example is often used by black people to refer to each other, and not necessarily in a negative way. Now admittedly white people using the term is generally viewed as acceptable, but that is just one more example of society determining the acceptability of a word.
- wiggles, on 03/08/2008, -15/+13It's only hateful if you choose to be offended by it. I'm not offended if someone calls me a short irish pollock, even though I am...
- nathanfx, on 03/08/2008, -7/+4It's only hateful, (i.e. hate speech) if in saying it your intent is to demean gays. If you use it without such intent, it is still disrespectful but it is not hate speech.

- fittysix, on 03/08/2008, -1/+136At the time there was no choice, the nes had 2kb of RAM, so you store that cloud sprite in ram once, and flip the color palette when you draw it as a bush.

- 32bytes, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1There was no "magic" per se Mario 3 used a helper chip(In nes they're called mappers) inside the cartridge.
Good old MMC3.
- bmac12, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1While it definitely saves memory, it doesn't save it by flipping the color palette. It saves it by simple using the same bitmap/sprite twice. If they flipped the palette, then the cloud would turn green, too.

- Peynis, on 03/08/2008, -3/+12Ken and Ryu were not the same sprite.
- leandrotami, on 03/09/2008, -5/+0I'm sorry but no. It's just a different sprite made up from another. And color palettes don't work that way... what I mean is that after you drawn a cloud, if you switch the palette every other sprite sharing the same colors would have them changed. So you could only have bushes and clouds simultaneously. Necessarily these are 2 different sprites, using different colors.
- kesam, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4Err, no. The sprite has only three colors: light, dark, and border (not including transparent). These could be marked eg. as 1, 2 and 3 internally. Whenever you draw it, you translate it to the correct colors depending on what you are drawing. So you only switch the color translation table, not the sprite it self.
- solinent, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4Imagine if they had blu-ray. They could dynamically alter the shape of the clouds with millions of raster pre-processed images.
- grimward, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2stop it.. you're making me drool...
- bmac12, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Actually kesam, they wouldn't change the table (assuming you meant the palette table), but simply the index of the color for the pixels that constitute the sprite. If they changed the color within the palette table itself, then the cloud would be green, too.
- solinent, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4Imagine if they had blu-ray. They could dynamically alter the shape of the clouds with millions of raster pre-processed images.

- apetrie, on 03/08/2008, -3/+46Yep and on some women it doesn't take much longer to grow back, not to mention the risk of ingrown hairs and rash reactions to the wax. Basically, wax is better for some and shaving is better for others. I love how McGrude puts it as if a guy can just tell his gf to go get waxed with out bloodshed too. My best suggestion, start grooming yourself down there (even just neaten it up) and tell her its because it feels cleaner and you want it to be nicer for her, hopefully she'll get the idea to do the same. Theres no good way to ask for it, and telling her to do it is a huge mistake.

- uhhNo, on 03/08/2008, -8/+1It will still grow back if you wax it, but it will take about 2 weeks as opposed to 2 days by shaving. Also, if you wax it, the pubes will grow back at the same thickness as before (that's why girls wax their upper lip). Anyone who has ever had a girlfriend should know this.
- Hoogs, on 03/08/2008, -1/+6Well, I have never had a girlfriend (19 years old here) so I didn't know.
- jdmzpf, on 03/08/2008, -1/+14Shaving does not make hair grow back thicker
- Syphon8, on 03/08/2008, -0/+7@jdmzpf. It makes the hair grow back as a straight, same width bottom and top, rather than tappering off at the top, so it looks thicker.

- lintmonkey, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2...it when my comment makes sense.
- fxu1989, on 03/09/2008, -0/+7I think he meant to click reply to the comment above of the one he actually replied.

- gfxl, on 03/08/2008, -0/+9Congratulations, you have created a black hole!
- tangerine, on 03/08/2008, -6/+4I small a meme.
"Which came first, the cloud? Or the bush?"
- boardboyt, on 03/08/2008, -2/+11its mountain dew because he is ExtremE!
- Jett3, on 03/08/2008, -1/+25anyone else notice that they're sitting on clouds in the first picture?
:o- sixsidepentagon, on 03/08/2008, -1/+4Thanks for shattering my perception of reality.
- tonyalameda, on 03/09/2008, -0/+6actually, they're sitting on bushes
- MauriceThePiece, on 03/08/2008, -14/+6Interesting how a comic about slyly repeated images has stolen a facial expression from an existing comic:
http://www.pbfcomics.com/?cid=PBF071-Weeaboo.gif
Looks like the lead paddler's face has been mirrored and traced over.- TheMidnight, on 03/08/2008, -1/+10Dude, it's a MS paint circle with two dots, an irregularly shaped mouth and a squiggle for eyebrows. How many ***** variations do you expect?
- ligyron, on 03/08/2008, -1/+2I have a patent pending on that face, as well as ":)"
- PaulHaggis, on 03/08/2008, -1/+1That face is a mini-meme on 4chan as is weeaboo, both originating form that pbf comic. This comic probably originated there and the eyes were intentionally included.
- LucasVB, on 03/08/2008, -1/+2It's supposed to be like the PBF guy.
- lime148, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Yes, it was copied from that comic, because the face is a 4chan meme. Yes, you're getting dugg down because diggers don't want to accept the fact that digg is now "hurf durf motivational posters" and 4chan with voting.
- worthone, on 03/08/2008, -16/+63Holy *****! It makes no difference in my life!
- nontitle, on 03/08/2008, -2/+14If you've never played super mario, you've had a sad childhood...
- worthone, on 03/08/2008, -9/+2I have actually, it's just that the Digg front page should be filled with news and not trivial pictures of this nature.
- str1fe, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4You want digg.com/news - not digg.com/all

- usingpond, on 03/08/2008, -13/+5I'm not a bigot at all, but that makes you the *****. You don't get it.
- Hurricane, on 03/08/2008, -4/+6You must have never had an older sibling or cousin "*****" is an especially popular derogatory term for younger brothers/cousins back in the 80s.
- yuutokun, on 03/09/2008, -1/+3Bingo. Have no idea while you are being buried because your comment is right on the money.
- asiarock, on 03/09/2008, -1/+4Yes, and "*****" was an especially popular derogatory term for black people back in the 1950's... that doesn't make it ok to use it today!
- Hurricane, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1chill out why dont ya
- usingpond, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1Yes, but those people were actually black, that's why it was a lot more offensive.
- nontitle, on 03/08/2008, -6/+1*****, a swear...
- technoredneck, on 03/08/2008, -3/+6Come on, dude, I'm gay and I dugg this :(

- darlingt, on 03/09/2008, -2/+1And I just did the same... except I'm referring to your comment.
