Mega Man 9 First Footage Revealed
joystiq.com — . . .the first footage, which definitely has the look and sound of a classic Mega Man game from the '80s (minus slowdown and flicker). Details on the Blue Bomber's return are slowly starting to emerge, but we're hoping to learn a lot more about this WiiWare title soon. . .

- reaper527, on 07/07/2008, -17/+11exciting, but i wish the graphics were a bit better. (perhaps something akin to either the SNES megamanX titles, or psx's megaman8) although unfortunately the nes retro look is what they were going for.
don't get me wrong, i love replaying megaman 4 just as much as anyone else, but would have liked to have seen a more recent "retro"- Spamcan, on 07/07/2008, -3/+4The only reason I'm willing to accept their design choice of going totally retro with the game design is because the series has already saturated the market in every form possible. They could have gone with more modern graphics but the PSP has already seen two remakes, they could have thrown in some modern effects over old school graphics but that's been done too. There's more Mega Man games then years the character has been around, at least five spin-offs and titles on nearly every major console since the NES. It's about time they dropped all the convolution and gotten back to the characters roots, and it doesn't get any simpler then this. As long as this doesn't turn out to be a carbon copy clone of 2-6 and has a few surprises along the way I'll be satisfied.
- Elranzer, on 07/08/2008, -2/+8They should have just used the Mega Man 7 graphics, which IMHO were the pinnacle of the series. Mega Man 8 and "MM&Bass" aimed for a less cartoony Mega Man, which in retrospect is counter-productive when cartoony *is* Mega Man's style.
High-res 2D (like Paper Mario or Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition) probably would have been the best route, though. - daridave, on 07/08/2008, -6/+15NO! I disagree. This is classic material and I absolutely love it. Megaman doesn't need graphics to be good -- color palette swapping FTW !!! :P
Can't wait for this one! Wow, more excited about this than actual new "graphically intensive" games!- seraph582, on 07/08/2008, -5/+3I wish I could be amused by Ball in a Cup 14.0 too :(
- bnb2011, on 07/07/2008, -13/+8there is a God, and his name is Satoru Iwata
- Konstantino, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Wrong company ;)
- LucerinRed, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8No, God's name is Howard.
Our father which art in heaven, Howard be thy name - jfujita, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2No his name is Keiji Inafune
- melkore, on 07/07/2008, -5/+16Please make a new Mega Man Legends game next. That series died off way too early.
- Elranzer, on 07/08/2008, -2/+11Now if only Sega would make Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (16-bit Genesis style).
Sega: It's not too late... we'll forgive you for the 3D Sonic games if you do this.- dagamer34, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Err... isn't that Sonic & Knuckles? Both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were developed as a direct sequel from one to the other.
- MikeMayer, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Actually as I understand it Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles was going to be one contiguous game.
To avoid delays and to release a game sooner they split it apart.
Yes that's the case: "The game is closely tied to its direct sequel Sonic & Knuckles, as the two games were originally one until time constraints and cartridge costs forced the game to be split into two interlocking parts."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_3 - bagboyrebel, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I liked the Sonic Adventure games, but I agree with your sentiment concerning every other 3d sonic game.
- Elranzer, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I believe the relationship between Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles is simply that Sonic & Knuckles is an expansion pack for Sonic 3, with the ability to play its levels as a standalone game (as to not decrease sales). Seems like an early (the only?) case of an expansion pack for a cartridge game.
- dyreschlock, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3Ruin the only Mega Man franchise not run into the ground?
Actually, I think you can find Rockman Dash 3 on cellphones in Japan.
- Elranzer, on 07/08/2008, -2/+11Now if only Sega would make Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (16-bit Genesis style).
- Azimuth1, on 07/07/2008, -23/+61The only reaason the original games looked like that was because at the time they couldn't do any better. Going back to that style in an age where much better art is possible is laziness passed off as homage. Retro for retro's sake isn't cool.
I love Zelda, but would I want the next 2D game in the series to look like the first NES game? Hell no.- semeticstallion, on 07/08/2008, -3/+18But we're talking about the Mega Man series here, a series that holds a "Guinness World Record" for most number of games in a single series (46). About 40 of those games have been terrible and there hasn't been a good Mega Man game since Mega Man X (even the die-hard fanboys know this).
I think the world can revert to (nay -- deserves to relive the glory days of) a new 8-bit MM game in this case.- AwesomeMonster, on 07/08/2008, -1/+12"there hasn't been a good Mega Man game since Mega Man X (even the die-hard fanboys know this)." Uh... x2 and x3?
- FoxOrian, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I tend to agree MMX is the best one they made. [in my opinion, that is.] I can't recall how many times I've replayed it.
They even did a great job on the PSP 3D remake, [I liked it, at least.]
MMX also had some of the best rockin' music, too, and spawned some of the best remixes I've heard on OCR. Spark Mandrils theme = love. - Rioracer916, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1X2 was was was the peak of the X series. Then sometime Later Megaman 8 came out. Shortly after Capcom decided to start making ***** Mega Man games for $$$$.
Which is why we see all the crappy spin offs and X games without a meaningful plots coming out now. - ssdded, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1MMX was the last good MM game? Since when? MM7 and MMX2 were every bit as good as MMX. Mega Man Legends/Mega Man 64 was great. MM Network Transmission was good, albeit perhaps a little too difficult in places.
- Elranzer, on 07/08/2008, -2/+2The eight Robot Masters of the game have been revealed, and honestly it sounds like the worst-sounding set of names in the bunch. On an interesting note, there is one "female" robot this time around...
* Magma Man
* Galaxy Man
* Jewel Man
* Concrete Man
* Hornet Man
* Plug Man
* Tornado Man
* Splash Woman- seraph582, on 07/08/2008, -0/+27wtf is she doing out of the kitchen?!
- djqxero, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2None of the names could be worse than some of the Mavericks: Boomerang Kuwanger? Launch Octopus? Overdrive Ostrich?
- wolferz, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1splash woman....
*looks back at the graphics*
How the *****?
- xsquirrel378x, on 07/08/2008, -4/+7Are you serious? I would kill for another 8-bit Zelda. They just keep getting worse the better they look.
- oilcan, on 07/08/2008, -2/+0one good 'are you serious?' deserves another...
- dagamer34, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6How about another 16-bit Zelda? A Link to the Past perfected 2D gameplay like no other game could.
- Natetendo83, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3I would normally agree, except Mega Man's best days were in the 8/16 bit era. Going back to an old school side-scrolling Mega Man is a dream come true. Some series going back like that doesn't work yes, but Mega Man it certainly does in my book.
- semeticstallion, on 07/08/2008, -3/+18But we're talking about the Mega Man series here, a series that holds a "Guinness World Record" for most number of games in a single series (46). About 40 of those games have been terrible and there hasn't been a good Mega Man game since Mega Man X (even the die-hard fanboys know this).
- rhesusattack, on 07/08/2008, -13/+6This is a terrible idea.
- jimmick, on 07/08/2008, -15/+9This looks like every other rom hack ever made.
Seriously, where are the HD sprites?- Elranzer, on 07/08/2008, -9/+8It's for Wii.
- Namingway, on 07/08/2008, -2/+4that's funny.. ***** the haters...
- metalbabble, on 07/08/2008, -2/+27i'm all for the 8-bit retro sound and looks. it's not for everyone, which is why it's wiiware and not a full-hyped game.
but, anyways, there are still crazy people like me who can't get enough of it. - daftfunk1, on 07/08/2008, -8/+2I'm excited for it. 32 bit would have been better but it will still be a fun and probably difficult.
- Sethbacca, on 07/08/2008, -5/+20Would be cooler if they'd go New Super Mario DS Style 2D/3D.
- doshindude, on 07/08/2008, -2/+10I absolutely love the fact that they are going back to when the series was at its peak on the NES.
- Namingway, on 07/08/2008, -2/+2ya but solid black backgrounds?!!! come on...
- koenigje, on 07/08/2008, -2/+13It's no Mega Man 2!
- unitedkronos, on 07/08/2008, -2/+6As a big fan of the Mega Man series myself I am looking forward to this game coming out for WiiWare. Although I personally think the graphics should be more along the lines of Mega Man 7-8, I'm still going to buy it non the less. Here's hoping Capcom will do the right thing and keep the controls as simple as they were on the NES.
- xombi242, on 07/08/2008, -1/+13I want a Special Edition "Cartridge" version of this for my NES.
- Namingway, on 07/08/2008, -8/+3come on... I love the idea of 2d sidescrolling...I do, but make the ***** look cool. Retro is one thing, this is crap.
Make mega man a side scrolling action rpg like castlevania symphony of the night....Or atleast make the background more interesting than a solid black...lame. - YancyFryJr, on 07/13/2008, -1/+7Do want.
- childoftheatom, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7The classic Mega Man series was a lot of fun, but after playing the X series it's so hard to go back. The dash and wall cling were two gameplay elements that added a lot to Mega Man, and every time I play a game from the classic series I keep wishing to be able to do them
- bagboyrebel, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3I died a few times after going back to the old ones because I kept trying to catch the wall.
- thePTS, on 07/08/2008, -5/+7Aww crap, now I have to upgrade my PC again ;(
- Darkangel754, on 07/08/2008, -2/+0Why?
- Mpwns, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3because those sprites can only be done in windows 3.1 running on 4 megs of ram.
- Vosona, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2PTS missed the part where this is a WiiWare game.
- LordofChaosIori, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Vosona missed the part where thePTS made a joke.
- welliwonder, on 07/08/2008, -15/+2burried, spam, we get it you want us to re-purchase very old games that we could easily download for free.
- philipz78, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4Um, it's a NEW game
- Rioracer916, on 07/08/2008, -5/+3I loved the Mega Man series, and next generation graphics aren't an issue for me at all. But let's at least have Mega Man 7 quality graphics, the NES series was battling a severe hardware limitation which got in the way of their artistic expression.
You can see what they were going for CLEARLY in Mega Man 7 and 8, a cartoony, fun, game with some lightning flashes of serious plot development each episode.
I've been burned so many times by Capcom over the past 10 years. Particularly with the X series. The Mega Man series is dead to me after Mega Man 8 and Mega Man X4.
I've moved on. Now Capcom wants me back and they've brought wilted roses as a gesture of courtship, meh. - Xihix, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4Well, there's one thing we know: The music is awesome. I think thats ALWAYS been a high point to every Mega Man game, even if the game itself wasn't good. Good ol' Capcom.
Also, yes, I am demanding Mega Man Legends 3. I can't stand knowing Volnutt is stuck up there ;_;- sanderscm2, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0I loved Legends when I was younger. Unfortunately, I never beat the first one/played the second one. After I couldn't find them used I tried to emulate them a few times this past year, but could find nothing that worked.
Bummer.
- sanderscm2, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0I loved Legends when I was younger. Unfortunately, I never beat the first one/played the second one. After I couldn't find them used I tried to emulate them a few times this past year, but could find nothing that worked.
- peestandingup, on 07/08/2008, -1/+13Now, if we could just get Metroid back to side scrolling 2D.
- transform100, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4I'm going to have to disagree with you on that metroid prime was a amazing game.
- Graedius, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2I heartily agree with you, fine sir.
Metroid Prime was a great game and a fine series, but Metroid longs to return from whence it came~
- KillsTheWeak, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1About time, maybe now we can know what happened to the original Mega Man.
- iDoraemon, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2I will always have fond memories of the original Mega Man series, especially the first three or four. I have to admit though that the later half the original series kind of blew. Is 9 going to harken back to the good ol' days of 2 and 3, or is will this be a rehash like 5 and 6?
Capcom, don't destroy my childhood memories! - seraph582, on 07/08/2008, -6/+1This just in - "Ball in a Cup 14.0" released for WiiWare! It's not like "Ball in a Cup: Generic Japenese Nonsensical Title" -- no -- they've ditched the new graphics to go back to original Ball in a Cup 1 through 8 style.
- sanderscm2, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0Hey we saw the other comment.
- BIGHED, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9I wish I could find the guy who made Quick Man's level and kick him in the yam-sack.
- Rickler, on 07/08/2008, -8/+1Nintendo loves selling games to idiots who already bought the game 20 years ago.
- petemorley, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1a) Its Capcom.
b) It's a NEW game.
- petemorley, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1a) Its Capcom.
- inotocracy, on 07/08/2008, -3/+2Rockman? What?
- bagboyrebel, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4that's what he's called in Japan. It was Rock and his partner Roll. (get it?)
- arock99, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1i hope it does well...perhaps this also means other characters would follow suit. perhaps a sequel to super mario bros 3 (an official one...not homebrew)
- leerayIG88, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1just one more chance
- Slayerdude51982, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6I don't care what anyone else says, I love the idea that they are going back to the 8-bit days of Mega Man. Say as you will that it's not the graphics of 7 or 8 but, seriously 2-4 is where the series peaked and I'm just talking Mega Man and not the X series, as much as the X series was good for a while, I'm glad they are doing this, and maybe just maybe they'll do one that bridges between the Mega Man Series and the X Series.
- Ortheos, on 07/08/2008, -1/+6The graphics whores are disenfranchised I see. This looks like good old classic fun. As long as it plays well.
- GIScope, on 07/08/2008, -3/+3GOD!! I can't wait until I get this game. Hope my ps3 will be able to handle it!
- Mstrommen, on 07/08/2008, -7/+1You guys realize that this is just 2 clips from 2 of the nes games, the first half I am sure comes from either 2 or 3, the second I am just assuming comes from one of them. I don't think capcom is stupid enough to release something as antiquated as this really fake video.
- jfujita, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1It's the official video that was released on Nico Nico Douga. In the longer version of the clip Inafune introduces it saying it's a surprise gift for the fans of the series and wishes that the mega man series can go back to its roots and see what made it so successful in the first place.
- Elliuotatar, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Rolls Royce Man?
Fabrege Egg Man?!
HONUS WAGNER CARD MAN??!!- LordofChaosIori, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Man Man
- sanderscm2, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0Universe Man, Universe Man
- ssgOverlord, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I think one thing people don't realize is to have the core Mega Man game play from the originals the 8 bit style is almost needed. Because one jumping sprite would look too awkward in 16 bit.
- DonCreech, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0Since I really feel Melkore on this one, yes, the next step is to finish out Megaman Legends. It was a great series with a lot of neat play mechanics that would totally benefit from today's hardware. Am I to believe that that disastrous Tron Bonne game was supposed to seal the deal?
- smergs, on 07/09/2008, -2/+1I can't help but wonder if this isn't just a previously unreleased game that no one knew about. Seems like to me it would be hard for developers of today to go back and create the same sound and look of the old games. I can't help but wonder if the tools they used back then aren't gone and they just had this sitting around and copied it over. Maybe updated it a little bit so that it wouldn't have the flicker and slow down that you might have seen on the NES.
I could be completely wrong but did anyone else think that? - SoopaflySAM, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Good Capcom. Now make Marvel VS Capcom 3!
- 88iou, on 07/10/2008, -4/+1I don't know what to say. Quite frankly, I feel that Capcom could spend their time and money on better things than this. I would not be surprised if they simply took a ROM of an older Megaman game, edited the graphics, tweaked the physics just a little bit, slapped the number nine on the title, and sold it for 1000 wii points. I don't know why people are getting excited over this, but I personally though Megaman X through X4 blew the Classic series out of the water except for Rockman and Forte.
- DakHo, on 07/10/2008, -3/+0Directx 10 looks really cool lmao
- petemorley, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3A lot of people (not just on here) seem to be questioning Capcoms decision to use an 8-bit engine over a 16 or 32. Basically, if you don't 'get it' then it's not for you. Megaman 9 is complete fan service and I'm really looking forward to it.
Now if only SEGA would take a cue from Capcom and make Sonic 4. - wolferz, on 07/11/2008, -2/+1Ok I'm all for side scroller games and I love the Mega Man series... but why go all the way back to 8 bit graphics? Why go back in graphics at all.
Take game play from megaman x ("platformer with style and unique gameplay")... or if you must the original megaman series ("ultra generic platformer polished to perfection") and put some decent graphics on it. I know I've said graphics aren't everything in a game... that they have infact have become a crutch... but there has to be limits on how far that is taken. Whats more is I can see no improvements to the game play. Sorry but if I want to play Mega Man 8 I'll play Mega Man 8... at least then I can get a little sense of nostalgia out of it while I'm there.
In the end my core issue is this. Side scrollers are capable of so much more, especially with today's technology... if you're going to make a side scroller... why not take advantage of modern tech? Retro? *shrug* If I want retro I'll get a shirt with sonic the hedgehog on it.
