Super Mario Marathon Raises over $11,100 for Child's Play
geeksofdoom.com — This weekend, from 3pm on Friday until 12:30am on Monday, three guys played 7 Mario games to completion broadcasting the entire event live on the Internet to a sustained audience of over 2000, and raised over $11,100 for the Child's Play Charity from over 600 contributors. It's great to see a positive story about the video games and the community.

- haruuii, on 06/30/2008, -1/+12why would one WATCH other people play a video game?
on a positive note, $11,100 going to charity funds :]~- Carlix, on 06/30/2008, -0/+11The same reason people watch teams play a sport, I guess..
- xsecretfiles, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1I was trying to link to the story about NUDE video game players, but I couldn't find it
.....I could always WATCH that- DangerMouse9, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1so if a 300+ pound guy that sweat profusely and had a hair back was playing nude you could watch it?

You owe me praise.- Jwoey, on 06/30/2008, -0/+13Pumbaa: I gravel at your feet.
Timon: It's not gravel, it's grovel.
I'm just saying, Lion King rules.- SpencerMc, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I have an ongoing, developing theory that the Lion King is an allegory for rule by an autocratic monarchy.
Simba rules by divine mandate from heaven in the form of his father's spirit appearing in the clouds.
The Circle of Life is like the medieval concept of the Chain of Being. The one's at the top claim that it is "natural" and the way things are meant to be, but I'm not sure the antelope think being killed and eaten by their king is that great, even if his body will someday fertilize some grass.
And the bad guys in the movie, the hyena, are in reality scavengers. They rarely if ever kill and exist on the leftovers of other animals, similar to peasants. But when the King is gone and they run things, they somehow "over hunt" the land and everything dies!
Still, pretty good movie, all things considered.

- Firehed, on 06/30/2008, -1/+14I'll click the green button for you, is that sufficient?
- welliwonder, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9I feel better, thank you.
Also naked women would suffice.

- thegreenspanput, on 06/30/2008, -7/+1don't waste your money on junk like this folks. The global warming people need $45 trillion or the polar bears will die.
- xsecretfiles, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Can't they swim?
- Atomic1fire, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1yeah, That and dont they have polar bears in other places
like upper parts of Canada or something and zoos
Junk? what better way to give a kid going through a surgery something to do then to give him a video game- thegreenspanput, on 06/30/2008, -0/+0sorry, I presumed everyone would detect the sarcasm.
- spamcrusher, on 06/30/2008, -0/+22Child's Play Charity is a fantastic charity to donate to. For cash donations, they only take about 3% for administrative fees and the rest goes straight to buying games for the children. If you want, you can go to the website of the charity to see an Amazon.com wishlist. There, you can see what the pediatric patients are asking for, and buy anything from some $5 legos to $50 Nintendo Wii games and everything in between. If you use Amazon.com to buy a toy, it will get shipped straight to the hospital without costing the charity any overhead and saving money.
When I was a student I did several rotations at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, and I got to see the end result of this charity first hand. Let me say, it's well worth it. When most normal kids are spending their summers outside playing, swimming, going on family vacations, these children are stuck in hospitals for months (and sometimes not allowed to leave their rooms or worst case not allowed to leave their bed). With tight hospital budgets they can't spend a lot of money on this stuff at all, and all the "bigger" charities focus on treatment of specific disease conditions but few others if any focus on entertainment of a bored child. If you don't want to donate cash, at least check out the wishlist of a hospital close to you and buy a toy or something. - DarkHornet, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5The event was awesome. A pleasure to watch from beginning to end (barring short breaks for sleep). I'm amazed and happy that the donations reached the level they did.
- tewstep, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1are there any other benefit events scheduled for Chucky?
- BitKid, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2If I was a hospitalized kid I would want someone to raise money to pay for a buttload of morphine for my I.V. drip.
- Trip42, on 06/30/2008, -0/+14Hey All, this is Brian organizer of the Mario Marathon. I wanted to thank FirstDigg and everyone Digg.com for helping to promote our event. It greatly surpassed our expectations. Maybe we'll have to do this again sometime.
- cherrj, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7That money can't help replace all of the goombas that lost their lives that weekend. We'll never forget you.
- decepticrat, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Hahahaha!! I award you the *best comment of this submission* trophy.
- allenu, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1NEVAR FORGET (the goombas)
- diskit, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1When I read "Marathon" I imagined a bunch of guys dressed as Nintendo characters walking around a city of some sort..
but this is cool too. - proficient, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Excellent work.
