Having Fun with Wii - A picture, which touches your heart
flickr.com — My little brother Stephen, who was born with cerebal palsy and is unable to walk or talk, is able to play video game baseball against his little sister with the Wii.

- bickman2k, on 10/11/2007, -13/+191That is amazing! I love that image! My son is 15 months old and loves when I play, but to see someone who has such a bad condition be able to enjoy it as much as me or anyone else is just fantastic!
- pyro789x, on 11/01/2007, -318/+9yess, I too have a wii.
comment abuse, everybody's doing it!
^-- watch as I get dugg down for that comment, and all the comment abusers below me get dugg up - knightblade2oo4, on 10/11/2007, -17/+102this is really beautiful.
- Yurimanna, on 11/01/2007, -203/+12@knightblade2oo4
The only thing beautiful about this picture is the hot bitch smilin' in the background. - moofree, on 10/11/2007, -9/+110doomII: prepare to be dugg down into oblivion.
This is one someone's flikr account. How is this an advertisement?
What are you talking about? - fhornplayer, on 10/11/2007, -10/+15@ pyro789x:
But other comment abuser's comments are relevant :)
ex:
This really shows the amazing machine that nintendo has built. I'm glad that stephen now has another fun source of recreation and bonding. - ksponge, on 10/11/2007, -8/+40@doomII (#7232548)
Thanks for letting me know you're of below average intelligence. It's much easier this way when the dummies come right out and let you know, instead of being tricksy. It lets me block you all that much more quickly so I can forget you exist. - student69, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36@doomll
Is this Propaganda? Maybe it became propaganda when it was posted on Digg, but even if its now propaganda by Nintendo or a Fanboy it still depicts a real child with cerebal palsy having a good time with his non disabled sister. Even though he is being assisted he is still playing with her on her level and really enjoying it. I refuse to believe this photo was taken with the intention of attracting people to the Wii. The family probably just wanted to share it because it is a truly great moment for them, and many people would agree.
Do not bother responding to my comment I have blocked you. - BenKenobi88, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26who says they're from the US?
- costa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+50@ doomII (#7232917): The real irony is you calling others stupid.
- Scoresheet, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34@DoomII: Don't you think it reflects more on you than on "yanks" when you say that over 250million people are all stupid?
I'm not American, and I can clearly see that there are a lot of intelligent genuine Americans out there, as well as dumb ones.
I do hope you're not English. - gravedigg, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10@doomII

Since when is it stupid to praise a company for making a quality product? Nintendo has made a great game system. Not only is it fun, but it's more affordable than it's competition and has a lower entry level, allowing more people to easily enjoy it. When a company does something right, it earns the word of mouth praise that Nintendo is getting.
Obviously we know that Nintendo is profiting every time something like this comes up. Hopefully that will encourage companies to focus more on what their consumers want, rather than creating a product with a primary purpose of pushing some new technology, as opposed to pleasing their customers. - insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -49/+3Why is some messed up kid (who will never be able to take car of himself) that is milking the health care system beautiful?
- Mrstupid7, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I would bet a million dollars that doomil has endorsed some product of some company at some point in his life. Any takers?
- hbcumber, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16@insomniac8400
I'm amazed you can take 'car' of yourself with such superb 'speelling'
Oh and I love the attitude to people with mental disabilities, really classy...
I just hope for your sake you never get so 'messed up' by some accident and need to 'milk' the healthcare system, in case the irony of the whole situation kills you - slicedoranges, on 10/11/2007, -36/+5Whoa, his mouth takes up half his face.
- emjaymj, on 10/11/2007, -31/+3*Gets into PS3 fanboy mode*
The kid already has a rough life ahead of him, so why do you need to subject him to such horrendous graphics? - porterfield, on 10/11/2007, -18/+1It's great that he's enjoying the Wii so much. I just hope he can find enjoyment in it for longer than the 25 days or so its pitiful selection of games managed to entertain me.
- crash331, on 10/11/2007, -10/+7Why are people saying to enter it into a photojournalism contest? The picture, aesthetically, sucks. The content is inspiring, but the photographer had no technical nor artistic skill at all.
- championchap, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3@costa (#7233087)
As much as he deserves a ripping, that is not irony.
Bender: The use of word depicting something other than it's literal intention! Now that, is.. Irony!
Though i suppose this is hardly the time for that all things considered. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3The PS3 can't do that. *crosses arms*
- themastersb, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2I don't get it. Is today opposite day? People who should be getting dugg up are buried and vise versa. wtf.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yay! Even babies and disabled people can enjoy the Wii!
...wait...isn't that the same reason people on Digg were bitching about the Gamecube last generation? If you're going to choose a console to worship at least be congruent.
On another less offensive note, it's cool that kid can enjoy himself, although I really don't think this deserves to be on the front page of Digg. It's sort of condescending to him I think...sort of like "awwww. look! The disabled kid can have fun just like us normal people!" Well of course he can... - xyzunit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Holy crap... my sister has Cerebral Palsy.... being able to connect with something like videogames would be great.
- mrexample, on 10/11/2007, -8/+0Yet more proof that wii is for retards.

Screw you and your communist attitude. This isn't the USSR, everyone isn't the same. No child left behind, ADA, etc. All communist crap to pretend everyone is the same. This kid has no potential for anything, no reason for him to still be here. If I get that messed up, pull the plug and harvest my organs. No one person has the right to use up so much resources with no real ability to give anything back to society.
- pyro789x, on 11/01/2007, -318/+9yess, I too have a wii.

- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -133/+5You'd have to be a retard to
1. Call it a "PS Triple"
2. Honestly believe the 'Wii60' is better than a PS3. In terms of hardware, PS3 has both them beat. In terms of games, 360 has more...none that interest me though. - shableep, on 10/11/2007, -42/+12damnit, why can't i Triple digg him down?

easy, they are on digg
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -3/+144My cousin has cerebral palsy too (severely), but I hadn't thought of doing this. So thank you so much - I know what I'm going to suggest now. He'll love it.
I don't know if people really know what cerebral palsy is, but it doesn't affect your intelligence. You just cannot control your limbs. Can you imagine being fully aware of your situation, but trapped in your own body? I can't imagine anything worse, personally. Anything like this is awesome for them.- championchap, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2@tizz66 (#7232103)
I think they probably do know what it is, isn't this the very same condition Steven Hawking suffers from? - Klarth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7StePHen Hawking suffers from lateral sclerosis. Different.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6As Klarth said, it's not the same thing, although in a way it is similar (ALS is degenerative, whereas CP is from birth). With ALS you lose all ability to move your muscles (essentially paralyzed), whereas CP means you have little control over them, but you can still move them. In my cousins case, his control is no more than to the extent of moving his head to one side or the other, or aimlessly moving an arm - this is how he communicates, in a simple positive/negative, option1/option2 way.
- Miche1987, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@tizz66:
I knew someone in high school who had cerebral palsy, and she was at least as smart as anyone else...they even considered putting her in honors classes. She graduated the same year as me. Unfortunately, I learned she recently passed away...

- Terminaltor, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20I love the Wii, this gotta be best thing I've seen this week !
- TomRemixed, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9This is what the Wii is made for. 12 player warioware was probably the most fun I've had with a gaming system in a long time.
- seandfeeney, on 10/11/2007, -39/+17NO DIGG == NO HEART!
/dugg- daxsymbiont, on 10/11/2007, -34/+8I actually find it lame that one would blackmail users into digging it by saying they have no heart.
I won't digg it because I know many will laugh at the expense of that kid. - enivid, on 10/11/2007, -16/+2Isn't this the equivalent of saying: NO DIGG == YOU HATE OUR FREEDOMS! (excluding of course the freedom of not digging).
- daxsymbiont, on 10/11/2007, -34/+8I actually find it lame that one would blackmail users into digging it by saying they have no heart.
- ragunax, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21That was very very touching. Just goes to show that video games can make anyone feel fantastic, from war veterans, injured people, and the needy. This picture represents how everyone should try to do and be.
- Subterfug, on 10/11/2007, -20/+12The Wii is a stroke of genius. It's so simple and intuitive than ANYONE can play. It bridges the gap between kids and parents who would walk out at the first sight of a controller.
- jdpalite, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30Technology can help handicapped folks to "function" normally in life, but that's usually where it ends. Just functioning. A wheelchair helps you get around, but it's still not the same as walking.
The Wii lets this kid play baseball with as much physical imitation of the motions as possible. It's going beyond "functioning"... and that is why I think this picture is great. - NiGHTSChao, on 10/11/2007, -128/+10Lame as hell
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/11/2007, -68/+4Quite So, I just hate the wii :3
I'm a PC Gamer

When in reality, the person(s) could be playing any game on any platform - Renton, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15It's ok if you hate the Wii, just don't go into random Wii related articles and start trolling.
and read the post right above
"The Wii lets this kid play baseball with as much physical imitation of the motions as possible. It's going beyond "functioning"... and that is why I think this picture is great." - mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -23/+4NightsChao is right, the kids not even playing, his mother, or whoever that is, is holding the remote for him.
- karel747, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23NiGHTSChao
Man, if you see that picture and all your first reaction is "lol, Nintendo Wii noobs!", then you've lost your touch with humanity. How about you realize that a true gamer doesn't associate with any one console, and that this kid is enjoying something which a PS3, Xbox360, or PC can't give him.
But what-ever, you're a hard-core PC gamer, so the ***** with everyone else. You've got the right to look down your nose at everyone.
Pathetic. - NiGHTSChao, on 10/11/2007, -19/+2"you're a hard-core PC gamer, so the ***** with everyone else. You've got the right to look down your nose at everyone."
Yup :)

I don't think it's just Nintendo fanboys you're making angry...it's pretty much anyone with a heart you're making angry.
That said, I've got a nice little spot for you on my block list.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/11/2007, -68/+4Quite So, I just hate the wii :3
- d3isme, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Great shot!
An antidote to all those (way too prevalent) articles about the negative effects of gaming and the inherent dangers of technology. - dlpirate, on 10/11/2007, -83/+11This just confirms my belief that anyone who buys a Wii is retarded.
Feel free to digg me down for that, it was cheap, I won't blame you.
On a more serious note, that is really touching. I remember a letter in Gamepro magazine years ago asking if there would ever be an n64 controller with the buttons reversed as one kid had lost alot of his manual dexterity in his right hand. Made pushing the buttons difficult you see. I bet he's a happy camper now that the Wii is around.
Oh, and the Wii is what it is, cheap, fun and simple. The three different consoles are for three very different kinds of games, the online multiplayer fanatic will head for a 360, the immersive gameplay person will head on over to the PS3 and the casual game or someone looking to have fun with real people will get a Wii.
Or you can get all three and not bicker about which is better.- Thevilone, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25Wow I think what you just said proves that YOU'RE the retarded one.
- thepars, on 10/11/2007, -15/+9I agree with everything you said after the first comment but there was no need for that insensitive and offensive comment.
- Lumiras, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17@dlpirate
What the *****? Seriously, you say that there's enough of a console market for all 3 consoles to flourish, but you call anybody who buys a Wii a 'retard'....by the way, people with cerebal palsy aren't retarded, their muscles are severely atrophied and uncontrollable. They may have retardation as a side-effect of the disease, but it's not mutually exclusive - evilblueyoshi, on 10/11/2007, -10/+9@ dlpirate
your mom is cheap, fun, a simple but you don't see me telling people your sister is better. - Nurven, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0@dlpirate

- SweetChinMusic, on 10/11/2007, -7/+7This is amazingly touching for just a photograph. I hope this gets to the top ten.
- gradeahonky, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20I opened that picture fully expecting to scoff at whatever was going to "warm my heart."
But I'll be damned, I'm touched. What a great shot. - weside, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14Is it me or is the woman on the far left actually holding and moving the kid's arm for him?
- Lumiras, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19yes, but at least he can somewhat go through the motions of hitting the ball and such. He might not be controling the entire swing, but at least he's experiencing something physically stimulating. Considering his condition, I'd say he's pretty happy that he is able to do whatever he can in the game
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Yes, because people with cerebral palsy can't control their own limbs properly, let alone time them for a game. It's as good as playing it for that kid though, you can clearly see that.
- daxsymbiont, on 10/11/2007, -15/+4I find it lame that some would blackmail users into digging it by saying they have no heart.
I won't digg it because I know many will laugh at the expense of that kid. - Typhoon2009, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Yeah, that is pretty touching. I know two people, one who had very mild CP and has since recovered (again, it was very mild, once he was old enough he got surgery done and now he can walk, run, and do lots of things fine). Another friend, has a stronger case of CP. His legs don't work and he can't control his hands and arms too well, but he's a great guy. Funny, intelligent, and he doesn't let his condition get to him.
One thing I've always wanted to do was to become a great medical mind, and find cures for conditions like CP. - Eric2929, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Incredible. The joy that gaming can bring.

- rasbill, on 10/11/2007, -14/+15ok i hate to be the dick here, its great kids having a good time, but he isnt holding the controller is he?
- 1upgamer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14He can't hold the controller himself because of his disease. Even though he isnt holding it himself he is still participating by having someone swinging his arm for him. You really cant do that with a conventional control scheme.
- crainiarc, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7It's touching to see people like him, being able to enjoy himself. God bless.

- Natetendo83, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4That picture is just awesome. It really doesn't matter who made the system or what he's playing. It's the fact that someone with his condition is playing the system and smiling and loving it as much as he is.
- H3BR3W, on 10/11/2007, -30/+4He's probably just laughing at the people waving their arms around like idiots. I mean, come on...is this really news?

- williamhcosby, on 10/11/2007, -22/+0Kinda sad, not heart warming. He can't even play the Wii without that lady moving his arm like a puppeteer. He should play a different system. With a normal controller he will be at an "equal" level against his sister.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22No he won't. Get a clue for crying out loud. Do you really think someone in that condition has the motor skills to be able to mash buttons on a controller? I don't think you really understand his situation.
- cwilson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The point to note is not that he's merely playing a video game. Despite someone having to help him with the controls, he can somewhat feel what it is like to play baseball (or any other sport in Wii Sports).
I'm sorry, but when I play Wii Sports Baseball, it feels a lot closer to the real thing than hitting the A button on the 360. Sure, for me and everyone else here, it's just a different way to interact with the game. I can go outside and hit baseballs with a real bat. This boy can not. Wii Sports is about as close as he can get. That's why this picture is so great.
- geekchick82, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6Did anyone else go Awwwwwwww.................
- nzezelj89, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Great story :-D
- hiplobonoxa, on 10/11/2007, -10/+8sadly, jack thompson will probably use this image as propaganda for his latest witch hunt: "video games cause cerebral palsy."
- damndj, on 10/11/2007, -22/+1Christ, give me a break.
Change the subject to "Wii fanboy creates ***** photo to make you think Wii is something special".
Provide a video or else the kid is just sitting there watching. - EnderMB, on 10/11/2007, -6/+39This has to be, by far, the worst comment abuse I have ever seen on Digg. I mean, it's something to insult other peoples religions, race, etc, but to make fun of a kid with cerebral palsy is ***** sick. You guys are the biggest losers on the planet.
- JorgeGonzalez, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4Nah, the people that whine from the sidelines are the biggest losers. It's the people that don't take life seriously that actually succeed.
- frigginchris, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6you can't take life too seriously, you'll never get out alive.
- EnderMB, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10It's the simple fact that those who aren't mocking the kid are bitching about how this promotes the Wii. Who gives a ***** what console it is! I'm sure that if he was playing a 360 or PS3 he'd have fun too, but he just so happens to have a Wii. As said before, Cerebral Palsy does not directly affect intelligence. It doesn't matter to him what he's playing, but with his condition being able to enjoy something is great, regardless of the console.
Seriously. Ditch the ***** console war dick fights for a second and focus on the ACTUAL STORY! - BHSPitMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1frigginchris:
I have never heard any faux-adage that made less sense than that one. - frigginchris, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6@bhspitmonkey
you must have something in common with the kid in the photo then.
- WillTraveler, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2Hes not even playing the woman is moving his hand and holding it for him. She could do that with any other console.
- chriskzoo, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2SErisouly, tape BOTH hands to the SIXAXIS and watch him go!
- Quakes, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2@vaseirik
That is truth if I have ever heard it!
- gene1102, on 10/11/2007, -30/+2Why play wii, when you can play the XBOX 360?
High-definition output, amazing graphical power, wireless connectivity, DVD playback and the next generation of Xbox Live are just some of the features that make the Xbox 360 so much more than just a gaming platform.
Don't miss out on all the Xbox 360 console has to offer. Make it easy and order yours bundled with practically must-have games and accessories.
