Wii sales hit the 7 million mark worldwide
vgchartz.com — The hot-selling Wii breaks another barrier in its quest to overtake the Xbox360 in total sales.

- glasgowm, on 10/11/2007, -8/+37^ I finally was able to get one, In may!
- chris4404, on 10/11/2007, -7/+50Yes indeed, revolution really was a fitting code name.

Actually, the reduced stock may be the thing keeping the buzz going. - sleze, on 10/11/2007, -47/+2Can't buy Wiis without resorting to Walmart's bundle extortion so there's no way their market is still increasing. Marked as inaccurate...unless someone can tell me where to buy one!
- Augie1969, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18Sleze:
Sundays seem to be the best day to buy them. Try lurking around Best Buy and asking questions. I hear Toys R Us releases them on that day as well. - Scipyo, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2@augie1969
don't worry, pretty soon the industry will catch up to the demand. In the mean time, you have Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Party, and RE: Umbrella Chronicles to look forward to. - aywwts4, on 10/11/2007, -7/+50"All I need now are some MORE and BETTER GAMES!!!!!

Don't digg him down, Anyone who had a wii since launch will probably testify, that the game library just isn't enough to keep them playing every day. Its a great system, and all the potential is there, but at the moment most of it is still just potential. no great driver, no great FPS, no truly great FP-sports sim.
As an addendum.... MULTIPLAYER GAMES!!!!1 plz?
:) - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -29/+5Description should read - "***** site estimates that wii has now sold 7 million."

I completely agree. There are about 3 games worth owning right now (Paper Mario, Zelda, Wii Sports). I tried WarioWare but it wasn't my cup-of-tea. - TheLD, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5There is no short supply in the UK anymore.
- rlg420, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16It's funny how people take this vgchartz site seriously when it says beta right after the name. If you want real figures then check with NPD.
- Zephkiel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5America isn't the world. If they wanted to calculate the total sales, they'd have to find all the weeks/months sales from Japan, Australia, Europe, and everywhere else that they sell Wiis. It's much easier to look on VGChartz and get an idea about how well it's selling.
- glock22ownr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6In related news Sony officials have been spotted crying and screaming WHY!!!!???

I really hope that more vendors take note of what is being done with Resident Evil 4. Take an existing, well done game, and remap the controls to take advantage of the more interactive Wii controllers. Sell it at a reduced price and you're guaranteed sales and profit right out of the gate.
What really sold me on the Wii was the fact that I can play the original Zelda and Super Mario Bros in my livingroom again. And one of the first things I did after getting the system was buy used a used copy of Resident Evil since I never had a GameCube and never really got into the series.
So by all means, produce new high quality games that really take advantage of the Wii controls. But don't forget about all of those EXISTING high quality games that could really shine on the Wii. - RiverBelow, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1What? I'm playing my Halo 3 Beta.
- drobati, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I got mine on a tuesday, last week. :D
Got it one day before school finished. I had a japanese test that i failed because of it. :( - KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1ayww... i had a wii since launch and about 8 games that I think are at least good... most great..
So I am actually VERY happy with the games currently available. - batmant, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have yet to see one in a store for sale anywhere near me (Las Vegas).
- floejoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I just came back from Germany yesterday and there is plenty of Wii units over there at a local MediaMart I visited and a few other stores carrying electronics. I'm not sure why such a low demand for it, however, people do seem to be aware of it.
When I went down to the Balkans nobody has heard of the Wii down there at all, it is unavailable for sale and PlayStation 3 is all the rave down there despite the price being so incredibly marked up.
- d3bruts1d, on 10/11/2007, -6/+48And I still cannot find one in my area.
- zyl0x, on 10/11/2007, -6/+34No one can. Personally, I find the simultaneous lack of consoles and skyrocketing sales baffling and contradicting.
- dclowd9901, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24Well, every system made is sold, whereas with some other merchandise that shan't be named might have more stock but fewer sales. And, the more demand, the better for Nintendo.
- buhari, on 10/11/2007, -14/+0do you live in Pazhakazahstan? =)
- airwalkery2k, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Objection!
The sales numbers do not represent the number of console idly sitting in the shelves. They represent the number sold, which is extremely close to the number of Wiis produced and shipped. It still takes some dedication and pure luck to grab one at this point. Additionally, this is the worldwide count, so it may seem inflated. - electrosoccertu, on 10/11/2007, -15/+9Pick up your phone noob. You're telling me that None of the walmarts, targets, kmarts, best buys, and gamestops/ebgames haven't received any shipments since the launch? Call them, ask when the next shipment is, if they say they don't know then call back in a few days. It's really not that hard to find one.
- tehgoatman, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Had one since december :D
- Zippo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Man, am I glad I pre-ordered.
- toptekjon, on 10/11/2007, -15/+1I really don't understand how any adult male could want to play the wii. I have a ps3 and 360 and I had a gamecube, so I don't hate nintendo or anything...I just don't see any games on the system that would be fun to me. They all seem like fluffly little cotton candy cartoons. Enough to make me vomit...
Begin the burial process....now - EelfinnTy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hopefully the supply problem will be over soon in your area. I saw 6 of them at my local walmart.
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"I really don't understand how any adult male could want to play the wii."
Among other reasons, my wife loves playing the Wii. Instead of my frequently being in the doghouse because I was playing too much videogames, it's now something we do together and it brings us closer. So my wife's happier, and anything that makes my wife happier inevitably leads to ME being happier, which any "adult male" should understand. Unless they're gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- Wii69, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25Only 3 million behind Xbox now and selling about 1.5 million per month compared to 0.5 million for Xbox. I expect sales to be level by the end of August when Halo 3 will launch and maybe keep things level for a while.
- rishid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I really want to know how many people buy Halo 3 while simultaneously buying a 360. This Fall/Winters for the 360 will be orgasmic.. yep I said it.
- KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1rishid... I will be getting a 360 when price goes down for GTA4... plus I will pick up some games that i am interested in like Gears of War...
I will not be getting halo3 though... as Halo to me was VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERY overrated. A good game, 7 out of 10... but no where near deserving the love. I never even finished it cause I just got bored of it. Though I havent played Halo 2 aside from Multiplayer which was fun.
So no desire at all to get halo3... maybe one day i will try to get into halo again from the first game, but not now.
- raiderj, on 10/11/2007, -5/+28Amazon still sells out of the Wii inside of 10 minutes once their available and posted on Fatwallet.
- Morphine7399, on 10/11/2007, -14/+5Clearly both vgcharts and nextgenwars aren't completely accurate but why is it that they are close on basically every consoles sales except the 360? they are about a million units apart. The Wii is sure gaining fast and I believe they will pass it eventually but probably not this year, especially with Halo 3 coming in a few months. Either way I am glad to see both consoles selling very well, and this can only mean more attention from developers in the future which is good news for us consumers.
- walkingdogs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Yeah but what about mario galaxy, ssbb, and metroid which will all be out this year and one probably competing directly with halo 3. one xbox360 game will not compete with the likes of these 3 titles
- kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@walkingdog as much as those games are great, this is Halo were talking about, it is the Xbox, if MS released an entire system that only played Halo, all the millions of fanboys would still but it.
- KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1kinsey.. you are way overestimating halo. Most people who rather take those nintendo games he mentioned then one halo... and honestly I think Smash Bros alone will be a huge system seller like halo, I think there are those who are waiting for that before gettnig a wii. Granted, they wont be able to find one lol... but im just saying, don't be overestimating the halo3 hype. I am sure loads will get the system for that... but not to the point where you can say "this is halo3" when most of the games the guy mentioned are in taht same league or at least close to it as far as hype goes
- kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@King all i was saying is that the hype for Halo 3 is phenomenal, and that the halo series is more of system seller than the Mario, metroid or smash bros. Will Halo 3 live up to the hype of course not, but all the fanboys will say it did. I do believe that, Mario, Smash Bros and Metroid are amazing games and are the sole reason i will get a Wii, well when i can find one, but i don't think they match Halo 3, in hype and system selling power. You said that most people would take those games over Halo and i personally would take those games over Halo.
- ChillEnt, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3I love it! :D
- greeneyes137, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I was in Soddy-Daisy TN at their walmart. They had 4 on the shelves there. No other wal-mart i've been in had any.
- Moojack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was at my local Walmart (Daphne, Alabama) last night, and they had 9 on the shelf. I guess it's one of the only good things about living in a small town.
- MikeD606, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1SoddyDaisy is pretty much Chattanooga, which isnt "a small town"
Go Vols! - NenDaiKi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The only thing anyone in Soddy Daisy is concerned with is marching band so that doesn't surprise me.
- trixyfox, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3great news for nintendo, cant wait to see what they do next to make the market their own
- pathy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21Sigh, call me when Nintendo make that announcement. Didn't we get past posting VGCharts to Digg every other minute?
- jimboejw, on 10/11/2007, -14/+6vgchartz = bury
- DAaaMan64, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23Do the old rules still apply? As in Nintendo calls a sale a sale when it hits the end consumers hand whereas Sony and Microsoft call it a sale when the retailer has it.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Not sure about Sony or Nintendo, but Microsoft's “sold” number refers to units “sold into retail”, which refers to units in transit, units sitting in store inventories and machines sold to consumers.
- dongiaconia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8@DAaaMan64
Generally that comment might be valid, but in this case, you are pretty hard pressed to find a retailer with any. So it's nearly a 1:1 ratio for the Wii. Whatever Nintendo ships very quickly turns into sold units. I've yet to see them on the shelves beyond the day the shipment arrives. I'm not sure if your comment is true about Nintendo or not, but either way, even if it is true, it is irrelevant. - DAaaMan64, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1That makes sense. But lets not forget that info either.
- tehgoatman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2the way wii is going the console selling to the retailer and the console ending up in the users hand are almost the same thing.
- chrism1128, on 10/11/2007, -2/+187 million and I can't ever find one in store.
I guess it's like Yogi Berra said, "Noboby goes there any more, it's too crouded." - diggan8, on 10/11/2007, -11/+19Impressive.
7 Million @ $249 (USD) = 1,743,000,000
ps. Keep in mind, Nintendo actually makes money on their consoles, unlike Sony and MS. Innovation prevails over graphics, who would have thought that!- thepars, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not to mention the increase in price when they sell them in other countries eg it costs $360 for a Wii over here in the UK. So I'd imagine the actual figure was much higher than that.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the system still cost money to make, there not making anywhere close to $249 per system, I wouls say that the DS would make far more profit for Nintendo than the Wii.
- uncleboogie, on 10/11/2007, -8/+7I'm pretty disappointed with the games so far and doubt the software will fare anywhere close to the system in sales.(except for Wii Sports)
- Hockey37, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12It prints money!!!!!!
- qwerty1024, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Do I need a firmware for this?
- Nati2atl06, on 10/11/2007, -14/+12I got my sister a Wii....I just found out the other day she sold it 2 weeks after I gave it to her LOL. I was mad as hell at first but I did understand. The system is a gimick as of right now...maybe later when good games come out it will be different.
- AntBing, on 10/11/2007, -8/+8I agree, I bought one back in December...beat Zelda and haven't played since. Gimmick may be a harsh word, but disappointment is surely a worthy term in my opinion.
- TheGrizah, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Did she beat Zelda in two weeks? :p
She can't wait for SSBM? Metroid? :( - KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Pretty long gimmick.
- kawaiiterebi, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I finally got mine at the end of April, and the store I got it from hasn't gotten any more in since then. Nintendo could easily sell more units if they shipped Wiis more than once a month...
Looks like there have been twice as many DS's as PSP's sold too. What a staggering number! - TheGrizah, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8I'm actually quite surprised at how well the Wii is doing.
Oh that nintendo.... - porcupus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11I'm loving the wii. Great for drinking games, plus the VC games make me happy. And I've been cleaning out EB games of all their used GC games
- Travisty2012, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Lets get Wiitarded
A Wii based drinking game, perhaps circle of death? Build sensors into the glasses to keep track of how long a player is drinking so they don't cheat. Add lots of mini-games and BAM...instant hit. Think it will fly with Nintendo?
- Travisty2012, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Lets get Wiitarded
- mjenkins, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5I'm curious about the current attach rate of the three consoles.
I've got 10 Wii games but I think I'm way (way) above normal for such a short period of time. - mykos, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Soon all cross-platform games will be crippled to Wii levels when developers make it their primary platform.
- Wytefang, on 10/11/2007, -19/+9Two words - who cares. YAWWWNNN...just another back-patting Wii-tards thread.
- Exhaust, on 10/11/2007, -12/+4Exactly. Insecure Nintendo fanboys keep patting themselves on the back. Guess getting your ass handed to you 2 generations in a row will do that to you...
I got a Wii and overall I enjoy it but their horrendous online offering, lack of Wii specfic AAA games and overload of crappy PS2 ports are really souring me on the Wii. It's totally riding on buzz right now... Soon as you get one the new wears off and you're like the rest of the rational non-fanboys wanting better online and more AAA games. I know quite a few people that own a Wii and they're all collecting dust.
- Exhaust, on 10/11/2007, -12/+4Exactly. Insecure Nintendo fanboys keep patting themselves on the back. Guess getting your ass handed to you 2 generations in a row will do that to you...
- ThinkFr33ly, on 10/11/2007, -9/+10I find it funny and somewhat disturbing that people feel that they have some kind of personal stake in the success of a particular video game console.
Is your life so devoid of meaning and substance that you need to get behind a "cause" like a console and have some part of your happiness dependent on the financial success of that console?
I own a really nice stapler, but I don't get excited, or even mildly interested, when the latest "Staples Marketshare Report" hits the streets.
I own a Wii and a Xbox 360. They're both a lot of fun. Whether one has more market share than another makes absolutely no difference to me. The fact that it does to so many of you should give you a lot of pause.- BenKenobi88, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Calling digg users geeks...that's original.
- carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4for those who can't afford to get all the systems, or would rather see the focus of one system or another get popular, there's plenty of reason to hold stake in how well your system does.
- MCHampster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5More marketshare for the consoles you own generally means more games made for those consoles. That's the difference.
Now, that's not to say that I believe in fanboyism... - hockey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2These reports are crucial for proper fanboi mental development. Without them they could go into withdrawal symptoms and suffer all sorts of mental and physical ailments requiring proper medical attention because going a single day without hourly updates on their precious systems would cause a total bodily breakdown.
Emergency rooms would be flooded with fanboi's on the brink of system shutdown and people with real problems would be stuck waiting bleeding to death while the fanboi's received their needed medical attention.
At least that's the only reason I can come up with why we see these postings every 5 minutes. . . .
- DTJunkie07, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2I know one thing and that is when Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes out I am going to have fun pwning some noobs online as Marth. There are not many people better than me as Marth. I know, I know I shouldn't brag I'm just super excited. :)
- themuffinman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Can you cereally be that super excited?
- Zuggy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Generally speaking it takes about a year before the killer games start coming out. The Xbox 360 is a prime example. About a year after release for Gears of War. I'm not saying that there won't be good games between now and then but we probably won't see anything killer until late summer or early fall.
- BenKenobi88, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6VC games add so much value to the Wii...I'm hoping they do new, independent-made VC games soon.
- MadMastaZ, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2they should make this into a weight loss video.
"Wii workouts for you and me!"
they'd rake in another 5 million at least.- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They are - Wii Health is coming out later on this year, and is suppose to have "Exercise tips". I'm still waiting for the Kathy Ireland Wii Workout Video or some such - includes game and weights you put on your wrist or something.
Then again, with the "Jazz Hands" movements of the upcoming "Dance Dance Revolution" for the Wii, that might be a workout in and of itself.

- postal21, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8People talk about how bad Ps3s are selling...
Check out 360 sales in Japan... such a great system the japanese are missing out on.
Microsoft fails at marketing to a different culture, Im sure some white guy in a suit makes all the decisions for what goes on in their japan division.- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Maybe, but I doubt it. Microsoft can afford to pay a Japanese marketer.
I think the whole thing is that the Japanese mindset about the original XBox is so negative that they rejected the 360 outright. - BabyWookie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2As I was saying for a long time, the only way for the 360 to succeed in Japan is for Bill Gates to write Square/Enix a nice, big, fat check and make them a part of the MS Empire. I would actually love to see this happen, since the 360 is my console of choice and I would love to see more Japanese games on it.
- Wytefang, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Or it could be that inherent cultural differences mean that Japanese gamers just don't 'get' or 'understand' why the X360 is, in many ways, superior to the Wii, DS, or PS2/3.
- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Maybe, but I doubt it. Microsoft can afford to pay a Japanese marketer.
- Familyguykiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3They are selling very well and yesterday was the first time ive ever seen one at a store and there was only one I bet its gone now.
- EnigmaXII, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4*****
- mattjumbo, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9Someone please tell me what all the PS3 and XBox 360 great games are that the Wii doesn't have? I keep reading this crap on boards. The Wii has plenty of good games for the amount of time its been out. Most of their games are boring ports but guess what....MOST OF EVERY SYSTEM'S GAMES ARE BORING PORTS!
No one who buys a Wii gives a rat's patootie whether or not Soldier-With-A-Big-Ass-Gun 2007 is out for the Wii. No one cares.- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I don't know - it's like the old line I see every Wii story that goes like this:
"Well, I bought a Wii on launch date, but then I played Zelda, and I didn't want to play anything else, because the Wii doesn't have any other good games."
Which means that the poster evidently doesn't care for anything but - Zelda. Because (and I'm feeling like a broken record here), Trauma Center was good. The ports (gasp! Shock! You mean console systems all get ports! No wai!) of Madden, Godfather, and Tiger Woods are regarded to be some of the best (while other ports like Prince of Persia 3 and Call of Duty are meh, and Far Cry is utter crap). Metal Slug was OK, but you really needed to play it with the Gamecube controller (and what up with no Virtual Console controller, SNK?).
Original games like Rayman and Elebits were hits with me and my kids. I played the hell out of Trauma Center and loved it, Red Steel was "OK", but I can see the potential. My kids and I finished Super Paper Mario, and when I came home yesterday my wife had just finished playing Wii Sports (she loves the tennis and the golf. I keep trying to get her to try Super Swing Golf, but she's not otaku enough for that one.). When I get home today, my kids and I are going to try out the Sonic game.
Sure, if you like shooters, you're not going to like the current Wii games. If you like beat 'em ups, there isn't much on the Wii for you right now. But for the other 90% of gamers, and non-gamers who got a Wii who don't play a game for 2 days, beat it, then complain there's nothing to do, I think we're doing OK. Add in the upcoming Big Brain Academy and Mario Party at the end of the month here, and we're still covered.
So please, trolls, enough with the "There's no good games!" We get it. You are uber-elite, have giant penises that the other guys in your dorm use to do pull ups on, and when your sweat touches the ground, hair grows there, and that's why you think the Wii doesn't have anything for you. The good news is, Microsoft and Sony are both fighting hard for your group - the 10% of the marketplace that consists of males 18 - 30. You've got plenty to play with, and when the PS3 drops to $400, I might join you.
Until then, I'm going to go home and watch my wife play with my Wii some more....
So yes, there are games that some people don't like. - MCHampster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@johnhummel
Perfectly summed up, thank you. - kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@john, in your post almost all the games you said were "OK" or "good" as much as i love the Wii the only worthwhile games that are good enough reason the but the system are Wii Sports, and Paper Mario. and still not one game in my opinion has really used the controls in a revolutionary way. The Wiis biggest asset i think is also t biggest fault, games will have to have great nd revolutionary ways to control or it will just be ok, or it wont use the Wii mote at all, take Smash Bros which is Nintendos biggest title is using gamecube control.
- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I don't know - it's like the old line I see every Wii story that goes like this:
- bigjosh359, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5I'll sell my Wii. Just not worth it anymore. Fad is over. Party games are fun. But graphics are starting to suck ass on my HDTV.
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Lair. People who live in trailers don't have HDTVs. Bitch got blocked.
- russizm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6My mom got a wii before me =[
- kevchuey, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3For people who can't find a Wii in stores, the current ebay prices are actually pretty tolerable now. You'll be paying a $25-50 premium, but its probably worth it.
- digitul, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2just shows what hype and a ake shortage does for a system. 90% of those wiis are probably collecting dust since bowling got old and theres nothing else worth playing
- rdoger6424, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3you haven't tried boxing, have you...
- IllmortalDeity5, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2The Wii is by far my favorite console of all time already. I play it almost everyday, and the game I still play the most is Wii sports. The bowling is spot on for me just minus the weight factor, and I actually think it's cool you can throw a perfect strike with the right spin with your back facing the tv. I really like the tennis and baseball too. The Wii is actually reaching the non-gamers and people that weren't already into playing video games. Some elderly people now use the Wii to stay active, and with the success of the DS's brain age training adults are using that to give their minds a workout too. Nintendo seems to care about more than just profit although obviously that's a big factor. I am very pleased at the succes!
- jordanlund, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's too bad (and I say this as a Wii owner) that there aren't any games worth playing on the platform.
Yes, Wii Sports and Wii Play are cute. But that's about it. There really isn't a compelling title that makes me turn on the machine every day. The DS has the same problem. People talk about innovation, but all that's on the machine are a bunch of crap games.
I also find it fascinating that people describe the PSP as a failure despite the fact that it's currently sold more than the 360, Wii and PS3 COMBINED.
Currently Playing:
360 - Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Wii - Old Gamecube games that I never had a chance to play in progressive scan
Playstation 2 - The Red Star
DS - Nothing. I don't even think the battery is charged.
PSP - Valhalla Knights- batmant, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree. I like the innovation but I'll take gameplay any day. That's why PS3s sit in stores and I'm addicted to a $5 copy Settler's of [freaking]Catan.
