Giant Lobster that Sparked Bidding War Saved From Pot
ctv.ca — After a brief stay on land, Dee-Dee the giant lobster is heading back to sea. The owner of a New Brunswick fish store auctioning her off says he's made a deal with a B.C. woman who wants to release Dee-Dee back into the ocean.

birds. But don't worry! I put him in a nice, hot bath.
Bart: [sniffs the air] Hey, what smells so good?
Homer: Yeah ... Pinchy? Pinchy!?! Oh ... Pinchy!!!!!
[he runs out of the room worried]
Later that night, Homer is crying at the dining room table, taking
bites out of Pinchy's dead body while the family is watching.
Homer: [eating, crying] Oh, man, that's good. [sob] Pass the
butter.
Bart: Are you gonna eat that all by yourself?
Homer: Uh-huh. Pinchy would've wanted it this way. My dear, sweet
Pinchy. [takes a bite] No more pain where you are now, boy.
[rips him in half and sucks out the meat inside]
Oh, God, that's tasty! I wish Pinchy were here to enjoy
this. [takes more bites] Oh, Pinchy ...
- lucy22, on 07/21/2008, -3/+14 Yes, they are considering creating of a lobster sanctuary in New Brunswick for such animals that they find. They should be saved and not eaten. And it wouldn't taste good anyway.
- RobotBuddha, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2That could be 'really' interesting in a scientific sense given that lobsters seemingly don't age. For obvious reasons, there's not a huge amount of samples available for study though.

Shediac, New Brunswick | July 22, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
A 100-year-old, 22-pound lobster in New Brunswick, Canada, purchased by rescuers who wanted to release it, will instead live at a research station.
Dubbed Big Dee-Dee, the crustacean was caught in the Bay of Fundy, near Shediac, in July and ended up at Denis Breau's Big Fish market. He opened bidding on the lobster at $1,000 and two unidentified groups in the province of Ontario and Laura-Leah Shaw, a Vancouver, British Columbia, each posted $1,000 in a bid to save the lobster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., reported.
Shaw said her plan was to release the lobster into the Atlantic Ocean to spare it from being cooked but federal officials nixed that, saying she would have to get a permit, the Canwest News Service reported Monday.
Instead, market owner Breau said he decided in light of the international attention Big Dee-Dee got, he wouldn't accept any money and rather donate the lobster to the Huntsman Marine Science Center in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, the CBC said.- myhandleondigg, on 07/22/2008, -1/+13a permit to put a sea creature back into the sea. whoever came up with that idea is a goddamn hero the american people.
- Duositex, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6I'm just glad that they're Canadian and not "American" in the typically overused sense.
- jhnewt, on 07/22/2008, -1/+4In other news, marine scientists say giant lobster is delicious!
- Jeffler, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4I think its actually a better idea than relasing it back into the wild. You just KNOW its going to be released and immediately after some new guy is gonna snatch it up and resell it.

- AmyVernon, on 07/22/2008, -1/+8but damn tasty.
- Duositex, on 07/22/2008, -3/+5I hate this ridiculous "but they're bottom feeders" argument when people are talking about which animals they eat and which they don't. It's absurd. If we judged what animals we wanted to eat based on the animals diet, we'd never eat any animals.
- dondara, on 07/22/2008, -3/+2If an animal eats *****, what do you think it's made of? Cows eat grass, hay and corn. I have no problem eating those things but I will not eat fish *****. You can have mine.
- psysop, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Don't judge an animal for his diet! What
- Elliuotatar, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5How about judging it based on brainpower? Or lack thereof? Lobsters DON'T HAVE BRAINS. Look it up.
All a lobster is really is a giant insect. People don't generally think twice about killing an ant or a spider, do they? - askantik, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1What difference does it make whether it has a brain? They have a nervous system. Whether or not they have a brain is totally irrelevant, as I'm sure the lobster would (if it could) agree.
Just for the record, humans would not exist without insects, which do not have brains. Without bees to pollinate our crops, we'd go hungry. So I say brainless animals FTW. And one more quip... humans have brains, but most of them don't act like it. Almost makes you wonder what use a brain is, doesn't it? - Elliuotatar, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2The difference is that if it doesn't have a brain then it can't be self aware or feel pain. It can react to stimulus, just like a computer can detect when you've pressed a key, but it's not "aware". Would you feel bad about smashing your computer with a hammer?
- TrevorBelmont, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1If someone found a giant, 100 year old cockroach I'd want to rescue him too.
- jaybol, on 07/22/2008, -1/+7i think they are just doing it so they can sell him for more later to someone who is really hungry for twice as much

- Chairboy, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7I remember reading about a classroom that intended to save money so they could buy freedom for a slave in Africa a few years ago. One of the regional experts said it would actually cause harm in the long run because it would create a new demand for slaves to be kidnapped. While this story is a warm and fuzzy (well, as warm and fuzzy as you can get for a bottom-dwelling, clawed death machine), it really only works on a small scale. If this were to grow into some sort of "mega sized movement" with tens of thousands of freed lobsters, then the market would see an increase in demand for a product.
Like Eliza (The Duchess of Archochon and Qwghlm) said, to free one slave is meaningless, and the only goal worth pursuing is one that brings and end to slavery. Not that Lobsters are slaves or anything. Perhaps slaves to the delicious taste of butter...- maddskillz, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6Maybe the classroom could hire hitmen to take out the slave traders? Think different.
- Chairboy, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4This is a fantastic idea. Think of the learning opportunities.
1. The kids can learn the history of assassins.
2. For arts and crafts they can fabricate various weapons.
3. Learning tracking techniques the hitmen will use.
4. International currency exchange. - WNW3, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I feel the same way about the stupid turkey pardons the president does every year. So freaking stupid and pointless.
- Chairboy, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4This is a fantastic idea. Think of the learning opportunities.

- ToRoE, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Do not boil for 3 hours! yikes. Live news always manages to screw something up...
- TEMM, on 07/22/2008, -0/+13 hours is about right for a 22lb lobster. Lobster is generally boiled for about 5 minutes per half pound. For this monster that works out to about 3.6 hours.
- Joab, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6Also speaking as a Mainer. Lobsters that big taste like crap. They are hard to cook and the meat is very bad.
- ncc74656m, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5"Y'ar Dee Dee, you escaped me plate this time, but ye shall not be able to run forever!" - Long John Silver
I think this is pretty cool, despite lobsters essentially being giant insects to me... I'd never eat one, just, eww, but still, very cool. 100 years old? Amazing how many creatures there are in the world to whom 100 years is hardly older than a teenager to us. Giant tortises for example. - drpleau, on 07/22/2008, -7/+2NUM NUM NUM NUM NUM

It really bothers me that when people find something awesome like a lobster that managed to live for a hundred years that they want to kill the ***** out of it and/or eat it, just because they can.- JointVenture, on 07/22/2008, -6/+1Pussy.

- Quaterni0n, on 07/22/2008, -2/+4What's with all the "Oh I'm so happy it wasn't sold off to be eaten" crap? What's makes it any more deserving of being spared than any other lobster? As long as we don't overfish them, if it's caught, I say: "get in my belly! OM NOM NOM NOM!"

- funkymoose, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1meh I would've sold it for 5k instead of 1k in a heartbeat. I don't think feeling good about yourself for saving a lobster that's probably about to die soon anyways is worth 4k. With the extra 4k plant a frigging tree or something.
