      Art is defined by purpose, by ethics, by the REASON it was created and what it stands for. Art is an honest voice, not millions of dollars used to shill some useless services or products, that is the prostitution of art, an ersatz and affected caricature of art. Advertising and all its innumerable, far-reaching and mind-numbing limbs stand in direct opposition of everything that art stands for.

        Michelangelo was a deep believer and had a passion for creating works which, to him, 'praised' god. Therefore; honesty. Commerce, or being paid for your work, is not inherently a bad thing. Plus we have to put things in context; modern advertising versus a Renaissance painter are two VERY different things which have absolutely nothing in common. But I do see what you're driving at and I'm not trying to be condescending.
