Hilarious subtle protest prank on SF's MUNI
flickr.com — I discovered this subtle prank on one of SF MUNI's historic cable cars. After a double and triple take I was doubled over with laughter.

- nitesoIja, on 06/17/2008, -25/+5i got a giggle
- HafizD, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1that's the point.

oh no!! endless loop!!
- MrVeal, on 06/17/2008, -20/+2"Don't ask don't tail"

- Harabeck, on 06/17/2008, -3/+28It's thrilling!
- seanmx, on 06/17/2008, -30/+6buried for announcing you dugg it.
- orangekid13, on 06/17/2008, -46/+3It's clever but it would work better if they could change it to submariner, or put a picture of a marine that blocks out the sub
- Natitude, on 06/17/2008, -2/+28I'm sorry..... what???
- bk3270, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2I think he might be saying it'd be funnier if they covered up the "Sub" in the part of "World War II submarine".
- InfamousAtheist, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3"or put a picture of a marine that blocks out the sub."
That's exactly what the prankster did...- orangekid13, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2Except that's NOT A MARINE
Have you seen a U.S. Marine uniform? Go find a picture, then compare that to a Navy uniform.
the uniform in the picture isn't even from the U.S. military.
they're playing with submariners (those in the navy that serve aboard submarines) and marines (a separate branch of the military) and nobody can tell the difference... WTF?- theeldest, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Since all Marines are in the Navy, some Navy personnel are in the marines.
Also, the guy's hat says 'Marine'. He proclaims himself as being a Marine. - a1532b, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Stop it! You're taking the funny away!
- theeldest, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Since all Marines are in the Navy, some Navy personnel are in the marines.
- orangekid13, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2Except that's NOT A MARINE
- bunker6, on 06/17/2008, -4/+357I don't think that's really an "unusual San Francisco experience".
- inigomntoya, on 06/17/2008, -1/+12And in the past they have been pretty impulsive. I didn't realize that they were being scheduled now.
- metaphysical, on 06/17/2008, -29/+7oh ohoho San Francisco = GAY PEOPLE
Hahahahahahahah that's lush!! I get it!!!!!!!!!!!!
:/- bencefeher, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6I know this sounds bad, but stereotypes aren't just made from the blue.
- JacksonYaya, on 06/17/2008, -4/+1Guess that makes you a redneck!
- bencefeher, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I don't really get it, oh and I'm not from the US (the only place I ever heard that term) sorry.

- ColonelTribune, on 06/17/2008, -3/+35Ahh, there aren't too many good pranks anymore.

- greenblob, on 06/17/2008, -6/+7This ad does bring new meaning to the motto "always faithful"...
- KMartSheriff, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6Donno why you're getting dugg down. Semper Fi (or Semper Fidelis) is Latin for "always faithful".
- stealthmoe, on 06/17/2008, -1/+12Classic.
- jasz, on 06/17/2008, -0/+7I don't get it... explanation plz
(ps. English is my 2nd language)- JacksonYaya, on 06/17/2008, -15/+4Well, they took the word submarine, which is a kind of sandwich, and used a picture of a guy to change it to marine, which loosely means "of the sea." Hehe, pretty clever if you ask me.
- alphasixtyone, on 06/17/2008, -0/+16what the hell? that's not the joke.
- snarkleclackers, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I dugg you up, just because it made me laugh.
- bdfariello, on 06/17/2008, -1/+28Semper Fi (short for Semper Fidelis) is the Marine's motto, and is Latin for "Always faithful"
The "Themper" comes from the fact that some gays have a lisp, a speech impediment that causes a person's 's' sounds to come out as a 'th' sound.
Lastly, I DARE bxrwxr to say that to a Marine. He'd get the ***** kicked out of him.- ultratron, on 06/18/2008, -10/+3Why is that exactly? Short tempers? Been brainwashed? Asking seriously though, you say it as though its a given. If it is, then there is a problem when members of our population are so prone to violence that they would attack someone over a word said with a lisp. Perhaps they should undergo some sort of government backed therapy to alleviate some of these anger issues. Just an idea.
Lemme guess, you were a Marine? - NuclearDruid, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I believe you are the one with the short temper Ultratron. I am sure he meant it if bxrwxr were to say it with a sarcastic tone a voice, though, of course, I wouldn't expect you understand that and instead take a chance to start a rant about how anti-marine you are.
- skyroket, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Even though the Navy (not the Marines) is the branch of military that primarily deals with submarines.
- skratchnerd, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Marines go on submarines too. They are actually the same branch as the Navy. There are always Marines on a sub or ship of any kind. They are the watch dogs to plainly put it. Marines are sea men also ;)

- willr91, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3It might be a protest of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy.

- dmourati, on 06/17/2008, -3/+17Dugg for the USS Pampanito. And yes, I've been down on that submarine.
- rockefeller2, on 06/17/2008, -2/+7Congratulations!!! You were a SF tourist!!!
- contradictator, on 06/17/2008, -2/+4Street Fighter Tourist?? Awesome!
I must say, I'm amazed at how they could take something as cool as a navy submarine and ruin it with a fruity name like "Pampanito". Good job!
- contradictator, on 06/17/2008, -2/+4Street Fighter Tourist?? Awesome!
- abandonedhero, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6Long, hard and full of sea men?

- Sp0rAdiC, on 06/17/2008, -10/+6Why is "Don't Ask! Don't Tell!" on the ad in the first place?
- lewikee, on 06/17/2008, -0/+17Looks like that was also put on the ad as a prank. Notice it covers some of the other text on the ad.
- racco, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5it was added. just like the marine.
- PabloMac, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Except the dude is dressed like a sailor, not a Marine.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Well yes, but sailors are gayer!
- PabloMac, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2"Well yes, but sailors are gayer!"
They tend to be, judging from my experien...observation.
- PabloMac, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Except the dude is dressed like a sailor, not a Marine.
- MLisa, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3It was added by the same person who covered up 'SUB' with the photo.
- SasquatchBill, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4Because you're an idiot.
- loroleg, on 06/17/2008, -11/+2the 'Don't ask, Don't tell' bit looks like it's been shooped.
Edit: after looking again It's probably real, But it's still rather odd looking... More odd than it usually would be.- elshizzo, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Yeh sure, it makes complete sense to write "Dont ask! Don't Tell!" on an ad for touring a WW2 submarine. What are they, going to not let you take the tour if you openly say you are gay?
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3It looks odd because it's a sticker, just like the picture of the Marine covering up the "sub"
- MtheoryX, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Pixels are all ***** up, right?

- ventralnet, on 06/17/2008, -4/+1Oh i get it... took a bit but then i saw the "don't ask don't tell' sticker
- rockefeller2, on 06/17/2008, -5/+10Why would you put a picture of a sailor with a hat that says "MARINE?" Why not just put a picture of a marine there? Funny idea, poor execution.
- isuisorisuaint, on 06/17/2008, -3/+2more like "been down on a seaman...", amirite?
- PabloMac, on 06/17/2008, -10/+6Nobody in SF seems to appreciate the military enough to realize the difference. They sure love the freedoms and privileges the military provides, though.
- rockefeller2, on 06/17/2008, -4/+9Don't get me started on the whole "protecting our freedoms" thing. Let's see, when was the US homeland last seriously threatened. Cuban missle crisis?
Don't get me wrong, I support the military, but if you think the military is "protecting our freedoms," you need to review the last 3 or 4 decades of foreign policy.- Shipyaad, on 06/17/2008, -6/+5You have no idea what a deterrent force is, do you?
- PabloMac, on 06/17/2008, -6/+4"You have no idea what a deterrent force is, do you?"
Exactly.
"Let's see, when was the US homeland last seriously threatened."
And why has it been so long? Proactive Defense FTW. - phoobahr, on 06/17/2008, -5/+4""Let's see, when was the US homeland last seriously threatened.""
"And why has it been so long? Proactive Defense FTW."
Is that why you've spent more than, nearly, the rest of the world combined? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to just not ***** with the fire in the first place. I believe we call that diplomacy and effective foreign policy.
That's right the freedoms your military has bought you have been, largely, the freedom to be a douche with more than 50 interlocking arts. High tech indeed. - sherbertbones, on 06/17/2008, -4/+1Yes, Pablomac needs to shaaaaaat up.

- Volstraav, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2there is no Marine uniform even slightly resembling the one seen in that picture. it is a Navy uniform with "MARINE" written on it.
- Wugie, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4The marines is a division of the navy
- SasquatchBill, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Um, plus a sailor hat that says "Marine" IS funny.

- D3ADBOLT, on 06/17/2008, -2/+5So subtle a protest, I didn't get it

- Borgcube636, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2I like how the sailor's hat says 'Marine' on it, as if people couldn't see that already.
- stonebear, on 06/17/2008, -3/+104I can’t imagine why someone would want to deface a naval museum ad, of all things. Submarines are merely long, hard, and rigid vessels which carry seamen to great depths, where they release their payload under tremendous pressure.
They are famously popular vessels, even with remote village people, and command the greatest respect among sailors worldwide, particularly in the US navy, which claims to possess the longest and widest models available, though, for security reasons, the veracity of this, and the specific measurements, can only be verified through direct personal experience on a need-to-know basis.
I have admired some very fine submarines in action on television and in the movies, which evoked a great welling up of pride and fervor on my part; I look forward to enjoying at least one tour of the Pompanito the next time I visit the notoriously gung-ho navy town of San Francisco, even if it is a WWII era vessel. Naval historians are unanimous in saying that what the older models lack in size and vigor, they make up for with craftsmanship and finesse.- rocknkittyn, on 06/17/2008, -2/+35Best comment ever.

- EASwanson, on 06/17/2008, -0/+10logged in to bury that
- stonebear, on 06/17/2008, -0/+15As an aside; my Yahoo! buddy in Murmansk points out that the US Navy's claims are hotly contested by the Russian Navy, which also prides itself on the size of its submarines: It cites the flagship RFS Rasputin, a class III, nuclear powered, hunter-killer capable of delivering multiple atomic payloads, which, because of its unique size and shape, has become quite familiar in ports throughout the world. Of course, size is not all that matters; apparently even the US Navy concedes that models quickest to reach depth and eject their ordinance tend to be Russian.
- joessandwich, on 06/17/2008, -8/+2Actually, yes, I have been down on that (sub)marine. My class even did the overnight program on it. Maybe that's why I'm gay, and have a thing for men in uniform.

Again, major over use of this word. I smiled and maybe laughed a little in my head but hilarious? No.
Still, good find. -
