- Cancerkitty, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12I've know a hell of a lot of people on government assistance, and the majority of them were perfectly able-bodied. They were just lazy and terrible with money.
Maybe I'm just running into the wrong people, but I have a decidedly unfavorable outlook on programs like this, which is a goddamn shame, because I'm sure they do a lot of good too. - louiebaur, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12I would call shenanigans on that as well!
- louiss19, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8I second. SHENANIGANS!!
- AmyVernon, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5I love the word shenanigans.
- pablo82, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5I love you and everyone else too. Free sparklers for everyone!! :)
- dugmartsch, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1I think if you're going to condemn large swaths of people to a fate worse than having their teeth rot out of their heads and live in houses of rotting food....wait maybe you could just not do that.
Do you really begrudge them for having a crappy rear projection tv that much? - TylerDCA, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8You know what.
If you took a millionaire and gave all their money to some bum living on the street then waited.... I am 100% sure that in 10-20 years the bum would be damn close to back on the street, and the millionaire would be pretty well off.
Rich people are rich because of their hard work and skill, not some kind of bad luck. Hard work fixes a crap load of problems!- pablo82, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3Personally I think people who are really poor should be dealt with by charities, not the government. As soon as you subsidise something through government means it creates more of it. By giving people welfare you incentivise the lazy ones not to work. Many of them believe that they are 'entitled' to such provisions, or simply just do not care and will take whatever they can get. If this was dealt with by charities you would see a huge reduction in unemployment and there would be a huge benefit to the economy. As for people who find themselves out of work, that is what savings are for. At the lowest wage point in the US and UK a person can make an acceptable level of living for themselves and put a small amout away. It just means not buying stupid things on credit and getting ass raped in interest payments.
- HaloZero, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Well, unless you inherited your money.
- pockiez, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5I was starting to think I was the only person who felt this way. I can't afford a projection tv, but by god, if you and I combine our tax dollars and give that money to a random family in a trailer park, surely they can soon have either a Benz or a 50 inch flatscreen.. or both!
I'm not much for paying for both mine and someone I've never met's car payments simply because they are lazy. - motivatedmama, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3I don't know about SSI but I do know that KTAP is a welfare to work program and the cash benefit is tiny (for a family of 4 it was about $160.00/mo. if I remember right). Your car is considered an asset and the value counted against you. The perks come when you hold a 40 hr. per wk. job (or classes) down for so long and show proof. You receive state medical for your kids and up to a certain amt. to keep your car running (still make sense?) At two mos. employment you get a bonus ($500.00) then again in another two mos. provided you have been employed this whole time (proof required!). You can only be on the program for 5 years total, for life. There are very few cash pay out programs that can keep a family completely afloat (nor should there be) that I'm aware of. There are many programs that do give a much needed hand up and should not be mistaken for a "hand out". Just please be discerning when referring to "all welfare programs" especially if you haven't walked in those shoes.
P.S. Not a rationalization but what about the tax return or the stimulus check these people probably got? Could it be that they are just the type of obedient consumers our wonderful Government loves? - BioXD, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3Dugg for using the word SHENANIGANS
- scooterbaga, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3Please tell me more about how to get paid for being a lazy, shiftless slob... This whole job thing has really been cutting in to my free time.
- 11Christine, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3I love that word =)
