Digg Gets the Job Done! 8-Bit "Prank" Tie is going to Production!!!
thinkgeek.com — What was originally intended as an Aprils Fool joke, is quickly becoming reality. Earlier today Thinkgeek's product page had a rather geekish 8-Bit tie available. The product was suppose to be a complete joke; however, a few thanks to pleads from a few blogs and one (or two) digg submissions the tie is now going into production!
- 2606 diggs
- digg it
- seeversjm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+130I'd like to thank Digg and the users of Digg for making this possible cuz.....I'm so getting one!
- devoss, on 10/12/2007, -15/+79"I find you're lack of faith in Digg.com disturbing."
- N1NJ4hippie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18I can't wait to get one of these. Digg thank you for this dream come true.
- driftwood07, on 10/12/2007, -3/+99i think more credit should go to the inventor of the product than the people who said OMG I LIKE THAT!!!!11
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -29/+58And you think Digg accomplished this why?
Can't wait to see how many negative diggs i get on this one. Chumps. - robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -27/+36I can't wait to see the next headline:
Digg cures cancer and solves world hunger! Way to go Digg! - theshiz892, on 10/12/2007, -3/+81saying you'll buy one and buying one are two completely different things. i can just see it now "I woud so buy that tie if it were real!1!@!" (later) "awww, 20 dollars, i dont wanna spend my beer money on that... maybe later..."
- vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Yeah that's way cooler than I thought it would be. Count me in.
- mrFREEZE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+71Hah! Joke's on them! Wait'll they see that no one will buy them. I wrote all those emails. My reverse-April Fool's prank is almost complete.
- thespinner, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5And you'd actually wear it!? I'm sure it'll be a hit with the ladies....
- PurgueFlantar, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1Help me out here, while I think the tie is cute funny har har I don't know if it's a direct reference to any game or character. Mario didn't wear a tie. Did any old skool NES character HAVE an 8 bit tie???
- btraut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Maybe if we all work together we can get them to make the Wii Helmet, too!
- tehjarvis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@purgueflantar
The WallStreet Kid. - Benjamin2040, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"And you'd actually wear it!? I'm sure it'll be a hit with the ladies...."
So you only ever wear stuff that is a 'hit with the ladies'? I think someone has issues... - ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"I find you're lack of faith in Digg.com disturbing."
You find I am lack what? - rjam710, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@thespinner
Let's put it this way, if you find a cute girl that says, "Cool 8-bit tie!"... MARRY HER. - airwalkery2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wasn't it $14.99 yesterday?
(Either way, I am getting one.)
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -2/+61For those of you who haven't read the message.
ThinkGeek: "Hey! You! Quit emailing us to make this for REAL already ;) We promise, we'll make it. In fact we are already working on it. You've just forced our hand! Click the 'email me when available' link above to get notified! Thanks! I guess the joke is on us this year :p"- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5If people want to read the article they can click the link at the top. And we don't need a mirror, Thinkgeek is run by the same people that run Slashdot.
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What do you mean? This is Digg. 97% of the people who Digg articles have never read them.
- RoflMyWaffle, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3word
- Billiam627, on 10/12/2007, -4/+48I cant wait to show up on the first day of my internship wearing one of these.
- Sil369, on 10/12/2007, -27/+4: /
- Hayaemsay, on 10/12/2007, -13/+11I read that as internet relationship...
- macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2I wonder how you're supposed to tie it and get such a flat knot...
- ChicknBot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18it's called a clip tie (otherwise it wouldn't be 100% geeky)
- westoncampbell, on 10/12/2007, -23/+8I'll just be picking up some fabrics tomorrow and making one myself. It shouldn't be hard at all. I'll probably make more than one and customize one with mario sprites, etc.
What the hell -- I'll make my own AND buy the ones that ThinkGeek will design.- Ikon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34w00t! Now all we need is some 8-bit panties for our girlfriends, now thats a turn on!
- targetX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25stop pretending already, we all know you're lying...
- mikejonas, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Awe-frickin-some.
- fober, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55And you thought that keyboard wallet was a chick magnet.
- schmitey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20what?!? Damn...I already made one.
- Iputspikesinyou, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6My Hummer has a pussy magnet in it. Very nice!
- digirat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1nice borat reference... i guess all you guys who dugg him down missed it?
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+30This just goes to prove that ThinkGeek ***** rocks. :-]
Count me in on the 'Buy' crowd, I already buy a ton of my clothes and stuff there. - KuntaKinte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16i can't wait to see some big executive wearing this
- pastasauce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25...Or the President.
- lintmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51@ pastasauce
It's an 8-bit tie, not a two-bit one.
- saintdesy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah, it would be a rather nerdy tie. You'd really have to wear it in the ironic sense rather than be seriously walking around thinking it was really cool. That said, however, I was one of the people who bothered in to e-mail them an ask for it.
- LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7just when you think we're all "that" geeky, we take geekiness to a whole new level.
Awesome looking tie. - DesolataX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Awesome!
8-bit laptop cases and backpacks would rock too!- ajgv, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2but then they'd have to be 3d....
- SwampyUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ajgv
That would be ok - they could be pseudo isometric 3d like Knight Lore :)
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Does no one else wonder how the knot part is going to work? I don't think they're gonna be able to make it look like that.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -9/+7Yeah, that makes me curious, but, they could make it a Clip on.
(Which I'm all for, my Windsor knot looks like a frigging noose.) - Okari, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Edit: Damn you Andrew, you beat me.
- PhantomZmoove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20It is a clip on, it says it right in the description.
- vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1edit: nevermind....
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24its not a clip on, its hot swappable.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -9/+7Yeah, that makes me curious, but, they could make it a Clip on.
- buuurp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18 bit tie. what a hoot! I'm still laughing...
- ph30nix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18now if only we could get them to make the battle pirranahs
- t0rment, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0I would ***** KILL for a coffee cigarette; a coffee and tobacco blend? Heaven!
- pinab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15i want the inhalable caffeine :D
- craigyjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@pinab (#5961026)
Yeah, I totally want them to make the inhalable caffeine sticks for real. Seeing as how I don't prefer coffee, I'd inhale a stick in the morning to wake me up.
nice. - cdcdark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, me too. You should have seen the excitement in my face when trying to type in "50" to the quantity box and order :(
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@pinab
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
- craigyjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@pinab (#5961026)
- curbcheck, on 10/12/2007, -32/+2Anyone who wears this in public will get made fun of.
Dorks.- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16yeah, whatever man. i'm buying this and wearing it to my job at Fry's Electronics. gonna be awesome.
- ajgv, on 10/12/2007, -18/+10and im gonna go to fry's and laugh at you.
- uaioe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Anyone who wears this in public will be intelligent (or confident) enough to be far above caring what some mouth-breathing waste of flesh and oxygen has to say about their tie.
Gettting your feelings hurt by people making fun of your clothes is somehing that goes away shortly after junior high. Except for maybe the aforementioned mouth-breathers.
So... how about you do us a favour and carry a tissue with you, so you don't inadvertantly drool on our carpets here, you half-wit? - uaioe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"And you think Digg accomplished this why?
Can't wait to see how many negative diggs i get on this one. Chumps"
Here's a good one, the letter I got from Thinkgeek after starting the first "petition" Digg email campaign:
"Hi Sean,
Thanks so much for the support. While we originally 100% intended the 8-bit tie to be an April Fools gag, over the past few weeks so many of our internal folks and friends wanted one, so we decided to go ahead and work on making them for real and also launching them for 4/1 since well, to make it interesting. Anywho, when they are available, I will be certain to send you a couple for helping spread the word. Just gimme your snail mail addy. Take care! Thanks -Willie
ThinkGeek"
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Great. Can we get our 1-UP mushroom now?
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Seriously...In the mean time, 1 white button mushroom + black sharpie + green sharpie + 10 minutes...I think you see where I'm going here.
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23 colors = only 2 bits.
- slapshot24, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3It looks like 8-bit NES. It's not supposed to BE 8-bit.
- Jarasmen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm so getting this. This will probably be the first thing I will ship from USA. Yay!
- tugger, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Jeez, who did they get to model it..??
"..and with the 8-bit tie, you too can look like a wino someone found in a bus stop" - Poco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't get it. I mean, I get that it is a pixelated tie, and it isn't a half bad idea, but why was this ever a joke? I would think that anything that can actually be turned into a practical product that people really want isn't a very good joke.
Gmail paper, http://mail.google.com/mail/help/paper/more.html, now that is funny. - DevilDunkard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2That really cool. shows how much push we have in here. I'll buy one just for the fact Digg made it happen.
- quack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I so want one of those ties!
- ilkeryoldas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Digg pwns
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bleurgh. Clip-on
- uaioe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey... as far as 8-bit geometric patterns go.... how about Q-Bert!
http://medien.akbild.ac.at/armin/crates_and_barrels/crate_qbert.jpg
- uaioe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey... as far as 8-bit geometric patterns go.... how about Q-Bert!
- Nooty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That tie is so cool. Wish I could get away with wearing one at work, but I'm quite sure an 8 bit tie wouldn't fit in with my Boss' hotel policy. My Job sucks. What sort of a world do we live in where people are unable to wear 8 bit clothing to work?
- SonOfDad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If only this would have worked with the "wireless extension cords"
http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/wec.shtml - BornGhost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I can't say i'll wear it to work, but i'm sure as hell getting one anyway!
- caponumen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, self employment, take your ties and stuff em.........
- tehjarvis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We already have a Mario style moustache...Now if only I could find a replica of Samus' helmet me and my girlfriend's role-play wardrobe will be complete! Thanks Thinkgeek!
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You have costumes to roleplay Nintendo characters.
Sorry. I just had to type that out loud. - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That is both really kinky and kind of disturbing.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You have costumes to roleplay Nintendo characters.
- srothman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the story behind it and it's a cool design, I'm definitely going to order one.
- ChicknBot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2People who emailed them about the tie (yesterday) should get a 50% discount.
- yomomo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I didn't know that High schoolers were so into ties. It should be a pretty funny Prom. How many allowances are you going to have to save to get it?
- berryhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sooo getting one of these..
- james1897, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1At the risk of losing geek cred, somebody please punch me in the face if you ever see me wearing one of these. Twice if I have that "tool cool for the room" look this guy's got.
- warlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am going to wear this with a white suit and black shoes while trying to get laid. Leisure Suit Larry Lives
- ndiderrich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't care what anyone thinks, I'm wearing this around town to show it off.
- RyanChappell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Tatoos are for morons! You don't go to work with Tats showing!
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You don't wear short sleeves with ties at work either though ... unless you're working at looking sullen and emo replete with little black hat.
- Glansbourg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1You people are such dorks.
- jackzhack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This would help my dating business go up through the roof. I mean what woman wouldn't want to date an 8-bit tie wearing man? Get an 8-bit tie wearing man right now. http://www.speedateauction.com
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"What was originally intended as an Aprils Fool joke, is quickly becoming reality. "
Are you referring to your raping of commas? - pitfallharry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm shocked it doesn't come as a Bow Tie to 100% complete the nerd factor.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2***** yes, I just wish it came in Grey/black
- Cornstar23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if anyone has said it, but I think this is a marketing test by thinkgeek. I mean how is this much different than anything else that is on their website?
- uaioe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Then I for one welcome our marketing test overlords!
- haastyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this tie is so ***** PIIIIIIIMP
- Scyth3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget your crunk cup, son. w0rd.

- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, a Power Red 8-Bit Tie!
- Glansbourg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Again, you people are such dorks.
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You say that like it's a _bad_ thing.
- Glansbourg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1OMG YOU MADE IT A REALITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
