Farmers, in India, spray Coke in their fields as pesticides
zimoz.com — Amazing video documenting the use of carbonated soda from leading brands as pesticides,. because they are cheaper than original pesticides and yet give decent results.

- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -26/+20This is Indian propaganda against American companies. They claim Coke and Pepsi contain pesticides, and then pull crap like this to "prove" it. Study after study shows that the pesticide content in the part coke produces is well below health standards (and below Indian-made products) but the anti-west sentiment in India (especially the communist controlled south) is too strong to listen to rationality.
- overtoke, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4rm999, did you read/listen to the report? the amounts of pesticides were OVER the limits.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The original cola: Coca-Cola. What can't it do...

Are you certain that everything you read on the internet is truth. How about everything on youtube? TV News? Let's combine the three. Someone posted something off of Indian news to Youtube. It must be true!
I personally can see this being propaganda. I just think we can't assume either way. - lithite, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6great. Digg me down for refusing to make assumptions based on fear mongering.
- playthev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@rm999, communist controlled south? i dont know where you got that from, there is only one southern state that has communists in power, and that is the smallest southern state too

"electrolites"
Really?
Talk about Idiocracy. - jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5But do the insects prefer Coke or Pepsi?
- fgsfds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Caffeine is a potent neurotoxin, and one to which humans have an impressive resistance. However, insects have no such luxury and thus end up twitching as their nervous system destroys itself.
This is why Coke and Pepsi are an acceptable pesticide while not being particularly harmful to humans - not all lifeforms are poisoned by the same things. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1playthev
It is also where all this controversy is stemming from. If it really bothers you, ignore the communist remark, but my point still stands that this is pointless propaganda (regardless of who is really fabricating it).

- eclipse007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21"In regards to environmental issues in India, there has been a controversy over pesticides possibly showing up in the product..."
Source: Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Coca-Cola_Company#Criticism- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7in the US, any sort of controversy about that is totally suppressed by the corporate-owned media.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Yes, it's showing up in the product because it's bottled there, with the water. They might as well just spray the water, that is the source of the pesticide.
- daza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35I actually had a relative who supervised bottling at a Coca-Cola plant in India and you wouldn't believe how strict they are with regards to what goes into the bottle. Water goes through a process of being distilled many times before it is used in any drink. The Coca-Cola company takes it's formulation very seriously and why would they tarnish their brand name by using running water? Drinking Coke is probably one of the safest things you can drink in India, apart from bottled water. Just make sure you don't mix it with ice, lots of tourists fall for that trap..
- rabidstrikes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you are an idiot.. distillation requires energy form heat.. if what you purports was the case, petrol would have been far cheaper than coke in india.. and moreover, i'm a microbiologist and i know friends who've done studies on indian bottled water.. most bottled water contain coliform bacteria above recommended limits. please don't lie/pull stuff out your ass..
- Crazychipmunk, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Well, I am not surprised...with what coke has done to my nose lately.

- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21The phosphoric acid probably kills them (that's the same ingredient in most sodas that is used commercially as a rust remover, and that will also dissolve bones, as it reacts with calcium.) And people actually deliberately drink that stuff!!
- CyanSnowHawk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Yeah, and it's so bad that people die just by sipping it. /Sarcasm
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Diet coke doesn't have any sugar, so that'd work.

- ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@ryanbread (#6061522)
When I was younger this would annoy the ***** out of me. I used to leave some soda cans sitting around sometimes and my father-in-law would always ***** complain about attracting ants. I was drinking diet soda exclusively. No sugar dummy! Go-Go religious logic! - GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, I don't know if the insects can tell, actually. When I worked at a Soft Drink manufacturer, we would sometimes spill the syrup boxes, for soda fountains like at fast food joints, outside in the loading area by dropping it off of a fork lift or something. Anyhow, the yellow jackets loved it, and would drink it up, and they seemed to actual prefer the diet products. I sometimes wondered if they would later die of starvation, since they weren't actually getting any energy from the syrup, but were filling up on something non-caloric.

- overtoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10what next? poisonous cat food?
- billraydrums, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Other uses for Coke-
Toilet cleaner: The carbonic acid will eat anything off porcelain. Just dump a can of coke in your toilet and in the AM, give a flush. Clean toilet bowl. BTW Add a little water so that it raises the normal waterline and that will get the ring out.
Bolt loosener: hen I was a kid and working on my bicycle, a mechanic neighbor taught me a cool trick- if you have a sticky bolt, crack open a can of coke, drip some on the frozen part and give it a few minutes. That bolt will break free no problem.
I'm sure there's a website somewhere giving the "101 uses for Coca-Cola" but those are two real-life instances I've used the stuff, other than drinking it.- andrewa, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4@billraydrums:
Damn you! I tried your suggestion, the can is too big, and now my drain is all blocked up! - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Someone needs to watch the episode of Mythbusters where they test all of these alternative uses for Coke. The only one that wasn't busted? Chrome cleaner/rust remover.
- 0o0Moylan0o0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yep, ive used it on an old Motorcycle i bought, the Exhaust pipe hadd all rust spots coming out all over it. Got some Aluminum Foil, and poured some coke over the Pipe, gave it a scrub, and was totally impressed with the result. got rid of ALL the surface rust.

- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Eventually, they will discover that quite a few 'foods' approved by the FDA in the US can be used as poisons for weeds or pests.
Hell...you could probably take our heavily chlorinated and fluoridated tap water in NYC and use it to kill many things...or at least render them stupid and docile ( a reference to fluoridation and the destruction of cells in the hipocampus of the brain.)
( the 'scrubbers' on the smokestacks of chemical fertilizer plants in Florida remove certain parts of the toxic black smoke...and the end product is sold to municipalities all over the US, and labeled as commercial grade 'fluorosilic acid', and added to the drinking water supply..)- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2OMFG... That's seriously ***** up. I was always suspicious of the safety of flouride (after having listened to "news talk radio" for years and years) but this ***** takes the cake.
I don't want that ***** in my body. I am going to find a filter to remove the flouride from my drinking/cooking water. I also have known for years that chlorine is a deadly poison. I would prefer to filter that out of my water too..
Damn.. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Y'know what else is deadly? Water. Better strike that from your diet, too. It'll be best for everyone.
- armourer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Whatever you say General Ripper.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@pairanoyd
You can't remove chemicals with a filter. Filters only work on large molecules and structures like bacteria or misted liquids. I think fluoride and chlorine are larger than water anyway. - CyanSnowHawk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The poison is in the dose. All naturally occurring chemicals will find their way into your body. How toxic they are, depends on the quantity within you. At a high enough dosage, water is poisonous as samdu says above.
- TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Also, keep in mind that saliva causes stomach cancer - but only when swallowed in small amounts over a long period of time...
/nod to George Carlin - jerbaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@idonthack: Have you ever heard of reverse osmosis and/or activated carbon? Not only can you remove chemicals from water, but combined with an ion exchange resin you can have water that is MORE pure than produced by distillation. You should look them up sometime. I have an R/O system with a deionizing resin bed under my sink. You can test it with a conductivity meter any time and will always read around 20 megaohms.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2OMFG... That's seriously ***** up. I was always suspicious of the safety of flouride (after having listened to "news talk radio" for years and years) but this ***** takes the cake.
- howdareyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I did an experiment once to see which liquid was best for your plants. I used water, coke, vinegar, orange juice and nothing. The plants were identical except what they were given to drink. The plant that seemed the healthiest was the plant given coke. I figured the high amounts of sugar and Co2 were beneficial to healthy plant growth.
- overtoke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2your experiment was probably flawed as vinegar and oj would change the ph a large amount, and the CO2 in coke is only going to matter if the plant is in an enclosed space, and you didn't pour the cola in the soil.
plants absorb oxygen with their roots in case you did not know this. probably the main reason that 'global warming' studies show that there will be no 'burst' of forest growth as co2 levels rise.
- overtoke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2your experiment was probably flawed as vinegar and oj would change the ph a large amount, and the CO2 in coke is only going to matter if the plant is in an enclosed space, and you didn't pour the cola in the soil.

- Ocktopus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I heard Coke can be used to clean car batteries. If that is the case then I wonder what its doing in our system?
- thePavelish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5cleaning it?
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Coke is no more adept at cleaning battery terminals than baking soda.
- geojams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Coke is the new Brawndo.
- MikeDugg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10My friend from India told me about this a year ago, I just didn't really believe him.... wow. No wonder my doctor told me I should never, under any circumstances, drink soda, not even Diet.
- CyanSnowHawk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Probably a good idea to stay away from diet soda. The artificial sweeteners are little understood. Not too fond of the high fructose corn syrup either, it's not like real sugar.
- overtoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i hear the coca-cola from mexico contains cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup.
maybe the fact that more and more corn is being used as fuel will affect the amount of corn syrup that "poisons" our foods today. - insanechemist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I recommend staying away from those doctors too - there's nothing out there a good shark fin soup or bear bladder paste can't fix right up!
- playthev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i doubt they use high fructose corn syrup for diet drinks, fructose is an isomer of glucose and follows similar biochemical pathways in the body
- Brss45, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1coke is also used to clean blood off of roads when accidents occur.
we know not to guzzle industrial strength cleaners, and yet we consume this *similar* drink everyday.- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And Coke is no more adept at cleaning blood off of roads than is plain water.
- 0o0Moylan0o0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I havent had coke for about a year.. I dont even like the crap. Lemonade is the way to go.
- jerbaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Let's use your reasoning in other areas of life:
1. Zikes! Did you know they use water to wash out the clogged pipes at sewage plants? Why do we put this stuff in our bodies?
2. Yowsers! Did you know that oxygen reacts with vegetable oils and makes them rancid. I can't imagine why people feel safe putting this stuff into their bodies.

- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What a terrible idea:
Coke is basically sugar and acid (flavor). It may kill the bug eggs on the plants, but more bugs will be attracted to the sugar, and the acid will most likely hurt the plants. - crazybugger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0some houses in india uses coke and pepsi to clean the latrines. i saw a video on the tv.
