The name of the song is If It Takes Forever I Will Wait for You, and it was performed by Connie Francis, at least the version that appeared on Futurama was.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hachikō
"During his owner's life, Hachikō saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. Even after Ueno's death in May 1925, Hachikō returned every day to the station to wait for him, and did so for the next 10 years"- Vincent21212, on 11/05/2007, -17/+36I don't mean to desecrate the memory of Hachiko, but some say he returned everyday to that spot for bits of food and attention from the public.
- MacGyver2210, on 11/05/2007, -2/+27I have a feeling this is more of a general "Concept Story" in Japan. When I lived in Tokyo there was a dog that would come every morning when I walked to the train station - from a few blocks from my house all the way to the station he'd follow me. I'd pet him and occasionally bring him a snack - some bacon or a piece of takoyaki(fried octopus). Even if I didn't he'd still show up and walk with me - barring only 1-2 days per month when he was doing god-knows-what. Well, after about a month and a half he just never showed up. :`-( (I named him Hachiko as a joke)
- Wuffles, on 11/05/2007, -1/+24Even so, that just reinforces the behaviour. The dog will not know whether you will reward it for following you each time, so it tries every time anyway to see if you will - if that makes sense.
- specialK16, on 11/05/2007, -0/+11But Hachiko always came back at the time when his master was supposed to get....
- ShrimpCrackers, on 11/06/2007, -0/+11... and always left when his master was supposed to arrive. He could have stayed longer and got more treats but didn't. Read the Wiki.
- AriaStar, on 11/05/2007, -0/+7People would give the dog food at any time, not just at a certain time. So he wasn't there for the food or attention he could get at any time.

The fact that you love your dog so much shows your ability to love and be loved. I am glad you are enriching your mind with schooling, but you have learned the most important lesson of all already. Good life to you, son.

- diggingaround, on 11/06/2007, -3/+10What would cat do?
- hollowex, on 11/05/2007, -0/+13My cat would probably do the same thing. He becomes depressed when I'm gone for a long amount of time. He starts yelling and pacing. Separation anxiety strikes everyone on some level I guess. He also plays fetch oddly enough.
A lot of animals actually respond this way believe it or not. - lostboy, on 11/14/2007, -3/+52a cat would probably scrawl a humorously spelled epitaph below the body on the road (in a comic sans font, with a bold outline). Think:
'I done a bad thing, lolz'
and pose just as the picture is being taken, with a look of puzzled annoyance on its face and a mysterious, invisible object held between it's paws as it cycles across the murder scene on an equally invisible red tricycle.- unloud, on 11/05/2007, -0/+5I've always thought my best color was invisible red.
- devila2208, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1That is the best comment i've ever seen.
- AriaStar, on 11/05/2007, -2/+4My Yoda gets depressed if I'm gone more than a day. He knows my mom, so she cat-sits when I'm out of town, and she's reported that he gets depressed very noticeably after about half a day, and clingy and fearful after a day or so. Cats love too.
- SoupLaLa, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2a cat would be nowhere to be found

- Cige, on 11/13/2007, -3/+5This is why I love dogs.
- AriaStar, on 11/10/2007, -0/+15It's why I don't understand people hating dogs. When my dad died, I couldn't make myself go see him because of the blood. A dog would go and be there. Dogs do what humans can't (or won't) do. They love unconditionally, and I try to model my own ability to love after dogs. Seriously. If you have a bad day and yell at them, which, I hate to day I've done, they lick your face and wag their tail to cheer you up instead of get mad. You get sick and they touch your cheek with their noses. You die and a part of them dies to stay with you.

* Hachikō, an Akita who became a symbol of loyalty in Japan, is now honored by a statue in Tokyo. Hachikō spent years on end awaiting the arrival of his master at his trainstation. Sadly the master had passed away and was never to greet his furry companion again.
* Heidi, a Jack Russell Terrier from Scotland, made her way down a 500 foot vertical drop to get to the body of her owner (after he fell to his death while hiking) and stood guard over his body for days in 2001.
* Old Shep, a Border Collie, who - after seeing the coffin of his master loaded onto a train in Fort Benton, Montana in 1936 - maintained a vigil at the station for over five years.
* Bobbie, the Wonder Dog, after accidental abandonment on a cross-country trip, Bobbie made his way back over 2800 miles to his family's home.
* Old Drum, an American Foxhound whose death at the hands of a neighbor was the subject of a lawsuit and George Graham Vest's famous closing argument "Eulogy to a Dog."
* Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier in Edinburgh, Scottland, was loyal to his master long after his master's death in 1858. Until Bobby's death 14 years later, he reportedly spent every night at his master's grave. - roguescout, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4Massive props to you for linking to the Greyfriar's Bobby.
It was the first thing that popped into my head...
The human and domesticated dog interdependent relationship is one of the lasting connections to the primal beginnings of our species. Dogs were the first to join us on our strange journey and have yet to let us down.

- thomash, on 11/06/2007, -76/+9i'm sorry to have to tell you how it really is.
all the dog is attracted to is some organic acids in the sweat of the owner. the smell that accompanies being fed and rewarded. he's totally unaware that his owner is dead. he's waiting to get fed.- blackeagle613, on 11/06/2007, -2/+32i imagine you don't go outside much or interact with other people right?
- Clixx13, on 11/06/2007, -7/+20I don't normally sweat when I feed my dog. Apparently I'm out of the norm.
- RedNeckerson, on 11/06/2007, -7/+15Said like a person who knows absolutely nothing about dogs.
They have some sense, you know. - Syphon8, on 11/06/2007, -0/+18Then why does my dog sleep on me and sit on the couch when I watch TV? Oh, and act different when he wants food.
- Cenobite, on 11/06/2007, -3/+1Woohoo! Ad hominem party!
- foxymcfox, on 11/08/2007, -1/+32Let me guess, you go to parties and walk up to girls and say something to the effect of, "You know attraction has nothing to do with physical traits. It's simply receptor cells in your sinuses responding to sympathetic pheromone molecules being emitted by the opposite party. Then as you become more and more accustomed to the person, your body increases the number of receptor sites as you are effectively "addicted" to that person's pheromones and it takes more and more of them for you to be attracted after a while. That is why after a while you grow tired with your mate and move onto the next hot thing. Since my pheromones don't seem to be a match for your receptors, we can cut out the long, drawn out middle, skip right to being disinterested in each other and just *****."
Good luck with that.- thomash, on 11/08/2007, -3/+0well at least i don't fake any emotional ***** and spend all night talking about a deep emotional connection between her and me.
god that idea makes me puke.

- thebenchase, on 11/06/2007, -0/+11Then clearly you've never looked into a dog's eyes and seen the complete love and trust there. Food and protection is part of it, yes, but so is the unquestionable love between dog and owner.

- chuckyc130, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3Its sad that the dog lost the only person that loved him, and maybe the only. :[
- RobotBuddha, on 11/05/2007, -0/+15The dead are just meat. It's the living, humans, dogs, whatever that suffer from someone's death.
- TheKrillr, on 11/05/2007, -0/+12The dead dude (or chick) wont be suffering. The dog will be. It makes me quite sad.
- stewieatb, on 11/05/2007, -2/+2i guess the 'who's suffering most' argument comes down to your own beliefs on what happens after death. and if your beliefs involve a heaven/hell situation (or similar) then it comes down to their karma, or strength of belief, or a whatever
personally the idea of karmic fate works well for me, because it seems to show that the world is, overall, pretty balanced. sme good things happen, and some bad things happen. the whole 'lifes a bitch' thing comes down to the fact that for some reason we are biologically programmed (in lisp, or possibly perl) to focus ourselves on the bad things in life. yeah, we're natural born pessemists.
*****, i've rambled rather rapidly OT

- blackeagle613, on 11/05/2007, -11/+60cats don't give a ***** about their owners... most people I know who own cats say they will just go wander around for days and only come back to get food...... dogs on the other hand will wait right by the door for you and wait for you to get home from work/school/hell even getting the mail.
- kp606, on 11/05/2007, -23/+29Cats don't give a ***** about their owners?
I wake up to my cat next to my pillow every morning. My mother's cat frigging waits outside the door of the bathroom while it is occupied, waiting for her.
Cats aren't stupid. They figure while they have the fresh air they'll go exploring, and they always come back. I've been ten times more worried about dogs missing then cats. - Syphon8, on 11/05/2007, -2/+15Dogs don't have a homing instinct because we bred it out of them.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/05/2007, -1/+17Depends both on the breed, and the individual cat. Some are remarkably social, even if not to the extent of dogs. Ours for example will come running to us if we yell from pain, wake us up every morning despite the fact that they don't get fed then, meow at us if we don't go to bed on time, and sleep next to us when that finally happens. A lot of that I'd be willing to assume has just as much, if not far more to do with their desire for a stable schedule than actual care about us, but it's still integration into a social environment.

- TheKrillr, on 11/05/2007, -2/+49Most cat's don't care about their owners... its true. But there are some that do. It takes a special amount of love and care (and a certain breed of cat, like tabbies) to get that attachment. Last year, I lost my cat to congestive heart disease. The morning we had to put her to sleep... she could hardly make a sound, she couldn't open her mouth to take a drink... it was terrible. But when I came over to her crying and petting her, she... forced herself to purr... and licks away my tears. She tried to comfort me even though she was in such pain and discomfort. THAT is true loyalty. And that was a cat.
God I miss my cat... :'(- tesuji05, on 11/05/2007, -0/+14:(

- TheBigBad, on 11/05/2007, -5/+2Not to be a dick but cat's also purr when in distress or pain not just when they are content or happy. Sorry for your loss though, losing a close pet truly is one of life's toughest experiences.
- richardhenry, on 11/05/2007, -1/+2All of the comments here make me sad inside :-( I love pets
- Frnnkdlxx, on 11/05/2007, -9/+8Cat owners are mighty imaginative. If you died in your home with cats, they'd feast on your fingers and limbs until they were strong enough to break open a window.
- hollowex, on 11/05/2007, -3/+8All animals would.
- nstanosheck, on 11/05/2007, -2/+9No, scientists say that most cats would eat their owners, but most dogs would rather starve. Of course there are obviously exceptions to these rules too.
- MorbenDK, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2i'm just a little worried about what I'll get, but...source?

- Asianwaste, on 11/10/2007, -15/+117The damn cat was probably just wondering why no one is letting it back in the house.
- VCAT, on 11/05/2007, -31/+9Its true, cats are psychopaths that want attention and food instead of money or power.
- iticu, on 11/05/2007, -0/+5Makes you wonder why we don't think of them as best friends, when you put it like that.
- keeganspeck, on 11/05/2007, -1/+6Yeah, dogs focus too much on those last two.

- jackal42, on 11/06/2007, -12/+41The cat was probably somehow involved in that guys death :)
- Mikhail101, on 11/05/2007, -6/+27cats are loyal just as much as dogs, my cat will wait outside my bedroom for me to come out an play, she even trys to follow me outside the house but if the door is open she would never leave alone.
- greenchipmunk, on 11/05/2007, -4/+18My cat is incredibly loyal. When I come home from college, she follows me around everywhere, even up to my loft bed at night. The dog on the other hand, flips out for a little bit until she remembers who I am, and then proceeds to ignore me until she has to go out.
- evilregis, on 11/05/2007, -4/+9Yeah. My cats do that too... until I feed the selfish pricks.

- bingobongony, on 11/06/2007, -4/+4What is kind of sad is that you feel the need to turn everything into a flame war. Do you just go around all day looking for ways to pair two things up so you can bitch about which is better?
And of course, one could say that the cat realizing that it now has to fend for itself. Smarter. Not gonna get any food sitting near a dead guy. - captric, on 11/06/2007, -0/+11His gold fish never even noticed! Damn ungrateful gold fish!

- CaptainZipTie, on 11/06/2007, -1/+6Our families cat was loyal to the point that it got her killed.
We took her in off the street when she was pregnant, scared and looking for shelter, she never forgot it.

- JustinPM, on 11/05/2007, -1/+13I'd figure that it might have more emotional value because we can level with it. I've never been around a bombing so I don't have as much an emotional connection.
- funkyjunk3, on 11/05/2007, -0/+4From what little I've heard/read of people who have been around bombing, they often get very scared when a sound/sight reminds them of it.
- JustinPM, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1When I lived in Iraq for a few months it was kinda scary. You can go from having a laugh with some friends to wait, what was that in no time flat. I'm glad I'm not there anymore.
- funkyjunk3, on 11/04/2007, -0/+4And I can guarantee you that 99.5% of all Americans haven't either. Makes me wonder how popular violent video games are in say Iraq or other ravaged areas, and if the kids there have the same callousness as American kids.
- hollowex, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1You say callousness. I say innocence.
- xtc46, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1its not callousness, its them being unable to connect their online actions to the action in real life. Its why its ***** to claim that video games cause violence. What you do in games doe not make you desensitized to the action in real life. I have played video games all my life, I cant count the number of people I beat to death or pushed off buildings in games. But the first time I saw somone die in real life (the were blind folded and pushed off a parking garage) I wasn't thinking "cool...bonus points" I was thinking "oh *****...call an ambulance"(which I did)

llets see a cat do that(haha ya right)- necroshine, on 11/05/2007, -1/+4actually, according to my mother, when her father died, his cat stayed under his bed all day...
- xJudahx, on 11/04/2007, -4/+2It's not a bad thing that a cat wouldn't do that
- zigspective, on 11/04/2007, -1/+12It's hard to compare cat behaviours to dog behaviours. Dogs are pack animals while cats are solitary. So when a dogs owner dies they're not just losing a member of their pack but their pack leader its bound to have more of an impact on a social creature. That doesn't mean that cats aren't also affected however. They can show major changes in their personality and may too lie with a body that has passed away.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/04/2007, -0/+4I mostly agree, but wouldn't quite classify cats as solitary. In the wild, house cats that have gone feral often become part of colonies with fairly complex rules regarding socializing with cats from other colonies, or different behaviors within those of its own.

- Malarie, on 11/06/2007, -10/+125when a women wants to kill a man in a divorce, she can take the car, the kids, but not the dog. Dont effing touch our dogs! Get you a snobby cat.
- john2kx, on 11/05/2007, -2/+17I think i would insist that she take the kids.
- queenstarsha, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2good idea.
- john2kx, on 11/05/2007, -2/+17I think i would insist that she take the kids.
- sneakybastich, on 11/05/2007, -28/+8maybe the dog did it and this is just part of the alibi...
- Catgofire, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2I love how this got dugg down 19 times and "You're all fools. The dog killed him." got dugg up 87. We're so consistent!
- Sharon83, on 11/05/2007, -2/+17Didn't expect that, how sad :(
- chaos7, on 11/05/2007, -14/+9dogs are great.
p. s. i'm sick of the phrase "not so much."- craigtmackenzie, on 11/05/2007, -5/+2i'm not so much.

- teaBagger, on 11/05/2007, -5/+15tear to my eye... I was in exact juxapose with one of my own animals I had to destroy this week...
- KidDirty, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1I had to do the same thing last week, plus I've been to two funerals this month. That picture really topped it all off. Damn.
- poidh, on 11/05/2007, -64/+3Mmmmmm, lunch!
- ciaran036, on 11/05/2007, -4/+5There's so many crappy comedians on digg.com, always turning serious stories into ridiculousness.
- turpialito, on 11/05/2007, -1/+2Was that comment even necessary???
- poidh, on 11/04/2007, -1/+0Admittedly, that dog isn't a cat. So it probably won't eat him. Now if it WAS a cat, it would be a different story.
- turpialito, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1Sheesh, man! Are you aware that your buried comments FAR OUTWEIGH your dugg comments? Does that give you ANY hint of what people think of you???
- turpialito, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Guess truth hurts.
- magnus3994, on 11/05/2007, -91/+2yo thats disgusting, buried
- quittintime, on 11/05/2007, -3/+40yo, you're an idiot yo.
- Dolphtesla, on 11/04/2007, -8/+2I'll bet you wear pajamas in public yet still demand fine service in establishments like Subway....yo
- AriaStar, on 11/05/2007, -1/+4The love the dog's showing by laying with his master is disgusting? You were never loved as a child, were you.
- quittintime, on 11/05/2007, -3/+40yo, you're an idiot yo.
- Vaytan, on 11/05/2007, -2/+18Very very touching... Brings a tear to my eye.
- Torx, on 11/05/2007, -41/+3it was probably some random dog on the street that decided to lay down in a pool of blood.
- iChainsaw, on 11/04/2007, -1/+1that picture made me sad...but your comment made me rofl.
- oneoverzero, on 11/05/2007, -1/+2If you do sarcasm on digg you need to be more obvious. Or use a sarcasm tag.
- opensourcemaven, on 11/14/2007, -15/+42i logged in to digg this. 'nuf said.

- Funpolice2050, on 11/05/2007, -4/+2That was very courageous of you. Thank you for logging in. It will probably mean a lot to the dog and its owner. You are a real life hero...
- darkamster07, on 11/05/2007, -68/+9sorry to bring everyone down, but isn't it well established that dogs' seeming "loyalty" is merely the result of natural survival instincts? animals aren't humans, get over it.
/ducks before *****- FeargusMcDuff, on 11/05/2007, -3/+17/fling *****
- em22, on 11/04/2007, -0/+18No its not that at all, dogs are loyal, they enjoy being in a pack, dogs are incredibly emotional animals when treated the right way. The dog will miss his owner.
- Gaalsien, on 11/04/2007, -0/+7I'm inclined to agree with darkamster, though I guess all loyalty is just a survival instinct. Most things when you get right down to it are.
- zapperdude60, on 11/05/2007, -2/+15Humans are animals. Do your research next time.
- mike81890, on 11/05/2007, -2/+3It is a equivalence statement. All humans are animals, but all animals are not humans.
- Joweyjojo, on 11/04/2007, -1/+2he is christian
- Bdog2g2, on 11/05/2007, -0/+11Dogs have been domesticated (e.g living with humans) for around 15,000 years. As much as its a survival instinct for them, our domestication in them has developed a level of loyalty and companionship like no other species in the animal kingdom. As much as people like to play down dogs as just being dumb animals, that are in fact very intelligent (even though they can lick their balls).
Dogs can understand upwards of 300 words (about the same as a 3 yr old). They can also perform reasoning by exclusion, meaning if taught the names of 5 toys and one of the toys is replaced by one they don't know the name to (e.g frisbee) and you ask them to get the frisbee, they will assume its the toy they don't know the word for. And only a few animals can do that primates, dolphins, some birds.
And as far as loyalty as just a survival instinct. I had a pit bull that at all cost would meet me at a bus stop. Even when locked in a fence, he would clear a 4.5 ft fence to make sure he could meet me at the bus stop. The dog was never formally trained, but if anyone touched me or grabbed me, lets just say their day would be bad. When he was in trouble, he would bring one of his toys over as a peace offering. - Fragowell, on 11/04/2007, -1/+5Your desire to "fall in love" and reproduce is just the result of natural survival instincts. What's your point?
- RobotBuddha, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2Very true. Most of our social behavior is instinct. Logic and higher brain functions play very, very, little role in our interactions with others.
- AmICoolNow, on 11/04/2007, -1/+2Couldn't you argue that human emotions are instinct as well?
- ManufactrsDfect, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately some people (you) have never experience real unconditional love ...
- travis712, on 11/05/2007, -1/+13Well I have to say, I wasn't expecting that. :'(
- Jayg28, on 11/06/2007, -4/+94When I sat down at my computer just now my dog came at laid by my feet. After looking at this picture I am going to get up from the computer and take her for a nice long walk.
- audaciousgenre, on 11/05/2007, -3/+18I was in such a good mood before seeing this.
- SaumZ, on 11/09/2007, -21/+115dogs will die by their owners.... cats will eat them. it's a fact.
- atomic811, on 11/05/2007, -13/+3I iz enviromental cat .... I eat everything on plate.

- xJudahx, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Awww, are you going to talk to another Buckeye like that? Let's spend that energy hating Michigan.
- mhensley1288, on 11/12/2007, -3/+3GTFO
- JrGhoull, on 11/05/2007, -8/+3lol cept for that time a few years ago when a guy died and his dog at most of him in order to survive. Not trying to insult this photo in any way...after seeing it, i went over to my dog and gave her a big hug (even though i doubt she would react the same way that this dog did).
- wilhel1812, on 11/05/2007, -3/+6My firt dog was ran over by a car while chasing a cat.
- IdevInull, on 11/05/2007, -2/+6Stupid dog.

- IdevInull, on 11/05/2007, -2/+6Stupid dog.
- FISHLEGBOOTS, on 11/05/2007, -10/+1Kind of like that gardener that got devoured by those dogs at Ving Rhames house awhile back. Dogs eat their own ***** and cats are stuck up pussy's.
- volonix, on 11/07/2007, -8/+9In Soviet Russia, pussy eats you!
- rarson, on 11/06/2007, -2/+4You must have had some ***** cats, because all three of mine are pretty cool and they always hang around me to cheer me up when I'm in a bad mood.
Come to think of it, I think I just got lucky with them. Most cats I meet aren't as cool as mine.- aacase, on 11/08/2007, -4/+5hahahahaha. cat molester.
- bingobongony, on 11/07/2007, -5/+2So you are saying it is a fact that dogs are stupid and can't fend for themselves?
- atomic811, on 11/05/2007, -13/+3I iz enviromental cat .... I eat everything on plate.
- bradcrc, on 11/05/2007, -49/+16the guy has rigor mortis and can't let go of the leash.
