So, 100K North Koreans gather in a stadium... [Pics]
blog.foreignpolicy.com — We've all seen photos of the slightly mind-boggling displays of North Korean propaganda known as the Mass Games. Here's this week's installment taken from Wednesday's event, which had special guest South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun in attendance. The pictures are simply amazing!

- suxmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -6/+80Absolutely stunning and, of course, equally depressing ... proaganda at its best!
- jggr, on 10/10/2007, -23/+21No the best propaganda is American propaganda... Because they actually seem to believe it.
/There was a cool quote from a cold war era Russian about this.... Wish I could find it.- Dan137exe, on 10/10/2007, -14/+24You make it sound like the Soviet Union had the moral high ground.
- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -10/+19Neither of you did.
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Where does morality come into the equation. Guess that proves propaganda works, theirs and ours, ours is just way better.
- Triachus, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5You make it sound like that was an unintentionally ironic comment.

- sangjmoon, on 10/10/2007, -17/+6It's the zenith of leftist totalitarianism. This is Moveon.org's wet dream where the far left is the government.
- Takteek, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Wtf are you talking about?
- sangjmoon, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3What is hard to understand? North Korea is what the far left ultimately want which is where they are the government telling the people what is best for them with no word of dissent. It is a country where everybody is equal except those at the top who have to be exempt in order to enforce their "equality". It is where individual excellence doesn't matter and where everybody is brainwashed into believing the leftist mottos. It is a country where the left continue to dominant in mind and body even when their policies have been proven disastrous in the long run.
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Funny that's what the left says about the right and ya know what, it's true. Labels don't matter actions do and left or right of center if the leadership believes that their ends justify their means they are the real bad guys.
- hcl40u, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So you are talking about one world government?
- sangjmoon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0A one world government is as likely as the USA and Iran merging to form one country. Leftist totalitarian states are all too real. Do you know why there are more leftist totalitarian regimes than right wing ones? It is because right wing regimes last only as long as the dictator while left wing ones last until their country self destructs. Populist brainwashing is far harder to eliminate than a single leader's oppressive rule.

I guarantee you we have it much better than the North Koreans.- clark24, on 10/10/2007, -10/+19You completely missed his point.
- funkyjunk3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10He is simply pointing out how bad it is in North Korea. And to be honest, I'm sure there are lots of North Koreans who would rather have been born somewhere's else. Not the majority mind you, but a good percentage.

- mookst3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Most people missed the 'point'.
Its not about North Korea. It's not about the US.It's about you. Most North Koreans don't even know they have a ***** life.I have seen a couple documentary's,and those people are delusional in loyalty towards Jong Dong(or whatever his name is)...they cry for his well being and are so very grateful for what he does for them...they don't know any better.
If you ,chocobomog, choose to live with blinders on and think that ALL of those things don't happen here in the US and that your life is so much better than it possibly could be...your JUST like one of them.Yoh have settled..just like them.(the ones who aren't suffering as bad as the rest)

- DiggsOnlyJew, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Who is we? The U.S.? I think if the North Koreans said half the things about their dictator as people on Digg do about our government, they'd be silenced and killed...

- brewer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17I don't believe that they think that they have it good. They are just too frightened to express otherwise.
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2We don't think we have it good. We are well aware of just how far our country has fallen into the ***** since the 2000 elections. These people may (or may not) be deluded. Americans certainly aren't. Not deluded, just reluctant to do anything about it. Which you might argue is worse.

- senatorpjt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Internet? All they have is radios with the tuning knobs removed.
- Syntaxis, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Hmpf.. Americans only have the illusion of freedom. Your "Desperate Housewives" is the Amphitheater of the Romans. Apathy created by welfare, everyone cares about their government, but nobody stands up to them. Yay for freedom -- too bad it doesn't mean *****.
- alex7575, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't think we are the only ones who have illusions of freedom.
Freedom is extremely overrated, unless you live no less than 10 miles away from any other human being, I would believe that you are truly free in the word's purest sense. But, what we Americans do have (I strongly believe), is a higher potential for freedom than most countries.
Welfare always strengthens apathy, that's a human trait, not exclusive to us Americans. I understand how the world sees us, and I also strongly believe that most of it is plain misjudgement, if you come to our country as a tourist, most of us will treat you well, and won't care from what part of the world you came from. I promisse you won't have to hide or fear for your safety when visiting us, we Americans are not the boogie man.

- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4You know, I hope this North Korean / South Korean peace treaty doesn't crumble into something worse. This could really be a turning point - a model, for peace.
I'm not sure if there's some hidden agenda that I should be looking out for (some secret attack or something), but I can guarantee you that people from both countries will look at each other differently for the time being. Admittedly, a few days ago, I thought Kim Jon Il was some brutal dictator (and undoubtedly, he's oppressed many people, there's no denying that), but he seems to want peace with South Korea. It almost gives me hope.
(Yeah, yeah... I just watch The Shawshank Redemption last night - so maybe I'm still reeling from its effect...)- Breepee, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Kim Jong Il _IS_ a brutal dictator.

- lebaige, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0He has been trying to incite revolution in South Korea for years. He wants "peace" because he can no longer subjugate them militarily and has decided the best avenue now is political. That and his failed economic policies have left his nation bankrupt and starving.
Both Koreas desperately want unification, but each only wants it on their terms, which is why they have not unified. Don't be fooled into thinking the North's terms are anything less than communization of the south. The same goal they had five decades ago.

Kim Jong-il and his stunning astuteness and personality is one that many if not all World leaders aspire to. Led by Kim Jong-il, the peoples of North Korea enjoy not only social safety but a high standard of living that is not equaled in many parts of the World Body. These spontaneous gatherings are a testament the North Korean peoples dedication and affection for their Leader, Kim Jong-il. Can Americans or Europeans say this of any leaders they have had to endure?

It's not even worth the time to pick apart quotes like "North Korea enjoy not only social safety but a high standard of living that is not equaled in many parts of the World Body". Safety? Let me ask you this... what would happen if I disagreed publicly with the Government? Safe, huh? Talk about BS propaganda. You're either A. From a wealthy NK family, B. Not from NK and have no idea about it, or C. Are one of the average NK folks who have been brainwashed into thinking that ***** of a country is the greatest place on earth.
After all, no one in North Korea starves while the great leader indulges himself to no end... no, that would be ridiculous! All hail Kim Jong-il and his visionary style of leadership that has propelled NK to be one of the wealthiest, friendliest, and most admired country in the world!

http://axisofeviltour.com/nk-trip1.htm - empirefalling, on 10/16/2007, -13/+1Kim Jong Il was born on February 16, 1942 - the first son of Kim Il Sung and Kim Chong Suk. Kim Chong Suk joined Kim Il Sung's army in 1935 at the age of 16. She worked as a cook, seamstress, spy, food gatherer, fighter and close comrade of Kim Il Sung. She was captured by the Japanese in 1937 and tortured, but was released a year later. She died in childbirth (her third child) in September 1949 and was quoted on her death bed as saying, “ My first son brought from heaven, will Lead the Nation and Korean peoples to triumph over the evil that Americans have unleashed upon the World.”
Her second child drowned in Pyongyang a year earlier while attempting to save other children from flooding which had occurred that spring.
At the time of Kim Jong Il's birth, his father (Kim Il Sung) was a battalion commander of the 88th Special Independent Guerrilla Brigade of the Soviet Army. The Soviets reportedly were in awe of the news of the birth of Kim Jong Il. The Kremlin even begin to prepare for Kims rise to power and eventual place as a World Leader. The main task of this unit was to gather military intelligence in Manchuria and Korea. The 88th was s located in a wooded area of Vyachkra near Habarovsk (Siberia) and this is where Kim Jong Il was born as was prophesized by not only Korean priests centuries before but by other religious groups.
Kim came to Korea with his parents in 1945. He received primary, secondary and college education in N Korea, but was soon instructing his mentors at the early age of 6, astounding all. He briefly lived in China and Russia during the Korean War. He graduated from Kim Il Sung University at the age of 16. He spent years authoring "The Birth of a Nation" - a lengthy movie epic still unmatched and regarded as the most inspirational films of all time.
He is Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army and Leader of all Korean peoples.- Walli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Kim? Is that you?
- mrjit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Oh please, Kim's birth and the stories are outright lies.
Supposedly his birth was FORETOLD by a SWALLOW, and he was born atop the Baekdu Mountains, how ever RUSSIAN records --- His father being a commander of a Soviet brigade, have him cited as being born in Vyatskoye -- that's Russia. His father lead an army of EXILES.
He is FAR from this wonderful leader you brainwashed N. Koreans know him as.
I highly suggest you diggers watch the documentary - North Korea, a Day in the Life. --> http://joox.net/cat/44/id/1273505
Children in North Korea are brought up in schools with anti-American propaganda nonchalantly placed all over he walls as "artwork." They're taught to blame AMERICA for their lack of money, production, health care, etc due to your trade sanctions. Basically, the entire country has been brought up to be treated like a typical druggie on welfare, constantly blaming other people for their decline as opposed to working to solve the issues or get help. - satost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You are a MORON if you believe that. I shudder to think of what else you believe in. What does your bedroom look like? Hammers and sickles everywhere? Pyramids? Do you communicate with aliens, belong to anny cults? Stay away from anyone offering you poison kool-aid and please seek psychiatric help immmediately.
- xGeneric, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6And while countless numbers of Kim Jong-il's citizens starve, he finds displays like this totally necessary. It's like taking an old junk car with a rusted engine, and giving it a good paint job. Looks good on the outside, but on the inside, everything is horribly wrong.
Tactics like this only help morons like empirefalling(seriously, if you haven't read her comment, scroll up) push their mind numbingly insane propaganda into view of the rest of the world. Every country has their own propaganda machine... but the ridiculousness of NK's is just staggering. I think it's mostly just to keep their own citizens believing in their insane leader, as just about anyone on the outside of NK realizes the living hell it's become. - drpleau, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0anyone else having trouble loading this page?

- ciaran036, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1beautiful. If only all societies worked together as hard as these. N.Korea is pretty much free from the influences of the deluded, evil outside world. Let's face, it our riches originate from the greedy, power-hungry white European and American men who have exploited resources and people from much poorer countries.
We should take N.Korea as a good example of how society should work (not entirely though).- silentwhipsers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You must be the deluded one. People are starving and dying in North Korea. People are sent to labor camps for various reasons, such as not following the Dear Leader and Kim Jung Il. Others are lined up and shot to death in a public execution style. There is nothing beautiful about what is going on there. Those people that participated in that couldn't drink water that day. Why? Because they wouldn't be able to use the bathroom. They were having to pee in random rooms in front of men/women. You think North Korea is free from the influences of the deluded world? North Korea IS a deluted world. It's ruled by a greedy power hungry man who is both very cunning/intelligent and crazy. North Korea is not a society working together. They are struggling and even eating HUMAN meat (source: a NK defector). They are FORCED to work together like that. If they don't do it, they are punished. Kids have to spend hours and hours every day practicing for the mass games. Healthy for kids? I don't think so. Seriously, you need to open your eyes if you think that this is something that should be considered a good example. Those people have to suffer all for the purpose of propaganda.
- ciaran036, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Point taken, but at least it's not as bad as many places in Africa.
- satost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why don't you move to N. Korea? You seem to really be enamored of the place.

- satost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Looks like a Nazi Rally to me, do you support naziasm as well?
- ciaran036, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1no, not at all. What does N.Korea have to do with 'Naziasm'?

- RationalXubrnce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2 I always thought those displays were amazing. I think the world is going to be blown away by what China does at the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Honor is hugely important to them and I think they will pull out all stops to show the world they have arrived.
- satost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1At the point of a gun, they will. You can get starving people to do ANYTHING. I shake my head at anyone who will be impressed at these displays. How fast would you rin if someone pointed a gun at you? Does the gun-pointer deserve accolades for making you run so fast?
- satost, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Looks like a Nazi rally to me. No wonder the socialists on DIGG are impressed.
- Insomnya3AM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Joe: Your plan will fail! You'll never keep the world leaders distracted here for 9 hours!
Kim Jong Il: Oh no? I've got Arec Barrwin!
Joe: Dear God! - gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Let's say you're a passing alien and you take a picture of this BS and then you snap another picture of say a Superbowl halftime show or a presidential inauguration. Forget about your years of brain soaking for a moment and tell me how they are different.
This kind of public spectacle has been used throughout political history to reinforce the importance of the group over the individual. Just go along if you want to get along and don't question the will of the group or it's appointed representatives.
While our methodology is more sophisticated the objectives have always been the same, to mute any tendency towards change or question what one has been told to believe in. So lets not get all self righteous when we look at the pathetic and ineffective North Koreans attempts at this when we are the real masters.- parasitewasp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1" tell me how they are different." you have a choice to go to a Superbowl halftime show or a presidential inauguration....that's a huge difference.
- DefaultGen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Shirtless Americans with letters painted on their chests have trouble spelling long words. I'm truly amazed.
- RomgRim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yeah impressive but it's like the Moscow subway.
