Starship size comparison chart
people.iup.edu — A poster comparing the sizes of all the famous sci-fi ships from Star Wars. Star Trek, BSG, etc. I can't find Serenity, though.

- TheFightForGood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37where is the millenium falcon? maybe i missed it...?
also, they need to include the spaceships from Independence Day... - royall64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+69No digg for the absence of the Heart of Gold.
RIP Adams.
Also the Death Star and many video hagem ships aren't there. - directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30"where is the millenium falcon?"
Maybe it's just too small to fit on the screen. An aircraft carrier barely takes a few pixels. - trib4lmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30There appears to be some confusion on Wikipedia as to the size of the Death Star; but if the common figure of 160km is to be believed the death star would be a sphere a little over 9 times the diameter of the Executor Class Star Destroyer at the top of the image.
- strikerK, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4is it me, or did i not see the death star on there?
- MusicalGenius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I wanted to see Thor's ship on there. I miss thor's ship....Stargate is dying....:(
- hottyson, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Where is the NSEA Protector?

it's in the bottom right corner group of ships. 488 meters - Recuso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6WHERE IS THE SCIMITAR? [Star Trek: Nemesis!]
It wa huuuuuuuge.
"52 Disruptor banks, 27 photon torpedos, primary AND secondary shielding" -- Worf
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scimitar_(Star_Trek) - Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Recuso
according to this it was only 890 meters....small compared to a lot of the stuff up there. I thought it was bigger :(
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Scimitar - Jarodd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I like that website better. More ships, and Death Star ! and Halo Ring ! Alot from animated and reality too
Check out this story : http://digg.com/television/How_big_is_firefly - moshinator, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Where's the one from Independence Day (aka one of the greatest movies of all time)?
- TimTheEnchanter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MyKnightwish is correct. He did submit this earlier. His link goes to one just before where you can get to the second image for larger vessels like V'Ger. Dugg both.
- mwosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just so you all know, The Galactica and Cylon base star are middle left. Took me a while to find them...
- Vladamir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ Hottyson
Pretty pathetic when you quote yourself. - klaymen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the death star would be way too huge to fit on that screen.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -52/+9This is so far off the nerd-o-meter Wil Wheaton's not even going to click it.
- verifex, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49Chart is stolen from here http://www.merzo.net/
Congrats on trying to steal it though; I'm sure Jeff Russell will be so happy that someone made a chart with all of them in one place.- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Actually, it's from Dan Carlson's Star Trek Minutiae website, and he has a second chart, as well.
http://www.st-minutiae.com/misc/comparison.xhtml
I can't find anything on Jeff Russell's site that leads me to believe he created any of those images, and if you'd look at this link, you'd see Dan Carlson references about ten different sources for his sizes. (In any case, it's certainly a much more meaningful image than Jeff's page with ships scattered on multiple pages and the suggestion of "Internet Explorer users may Click and Drag the starships to compare them as you like.") - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"In any case, it's certainly a much more meaningful image than Jeff's page with ships scattered on multiple pages"
You can't exactly put Ringworld in the same image with an X-wing, without creating an extremely huge file of course. - TimTheEnchanter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks Verifex. The original is better and has Serenity!
- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Actually, it's from Dan Carlson's Star Trek Minutiae website, and he has a second chart, as well.
- StarCrusher, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23What? No Serenity? No self-respecting geek would have submitted a link that excluded Serenity!
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8If it makes you feel any better, then the site where those were stolen from had it. =P
- ndonohue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It wouldn't be hard either... Serenity was like, one ship and a bunch of horses (not saying it wasn't a good show- it was awesome)
And where's Deep Space Nine? I always wondered how big it was...
Someone should mix this with the EVE online ship chart- their ships would blow even the star destroyer out of the water - captainbluebear, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15And where is the Pillar of Autumn?
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I'm wondering where the Spaceballs ship is -- Spaceball One.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4"And where is the Pillar of Autumn?"
sorry, only ships from things that don't suck made the list - nunquam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ ndonohue
DS9 is there, just to the below and to the left of center. - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nobody likes the ol' good Nostromo... :-(
- Bakkster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Serenity is 63m, the smallest ship on the chart is 200m. Pick 6 pixels, that's Serenity.
http://www.merzo.net/ - freff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@Bakkster
Actually, the smallest ship on the chart is 98.75m, the USS Discovery from 2001: Space Odessey which is on the far right of the map. It's actually visible as what looks like two specs on the black background. But your point still stands regarding the Serenity. - dtd00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@freff
what about the USA Space Shuttle up top? 56.1m
Or are we going for just fictional ships? - freff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@dtd00d
You got me. I completely missed that one.
Happy New Year all.
- thefutureisours, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Star Wars for the win.
- albinoMithos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Stop now before you cause the Armageddon of geek arguments about which Sci-Fi series is the best...
- jschrab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Lexx would eat the Death Star for lunch.
- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the Lexx is significantly smaller though. The death star is 120,000 meters in diameter...
- JeremyTTU, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1@Xinareiaz
Are you freaking serious... ITS NOT REAL! It's like almost having an argument with a Christian. The only real things on that chart are the first four LITTLE ships + missile. - Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4 lol, I have hour long arguments with my friends about fictional stuff all the time. Of course it doesn't matter, but its fun to argue about.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When Rommie steps on the playing field, everyone dies.
shes so hot!
Btw, Trek > SW, and Picard> Kirk
@Jeremy
Leave, now! If you wish to say those things and shatter our illusions, do it in private.
- ImPerial99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7im lovin the executor class star destroyer but i cant imagine how big an eclipse class star destroyer would be!
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35Bah! I don't see a Ha'tak, The O'Neill, The Beliskner, The Daniel Jackson, the city-ship of Atlantis, The Daedaleus, The Prometheus, A wraith hive ship, a wraith cruiser, that wierd thing from 'Grace'.............
Need I continue? Stargate has only had about 270 episodes across two series....- wstrucke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11about to be three
- MASTERPL, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9damnit, I wish someone would include the stargate ships. Atlantis would probably pwn that whole poster. (yes, i said "pwn, sue me)
- verbose, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4Stargate's probably not included because it's below the quality sci-fi threshold. There has to be a cutoff somewhere.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7There are things from Voyager and Enterprise on there, so I'm not buying a 'quality' cutoff....especially since Stargate rules.
- verbose, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Probably becasue if you admit any Star Trek, you have to include most of it. Stargate as a whole probably didn't fit the author's quality threshold. I would have left out Babylon 5 myself.
- Shadow6363, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Damn, Stargate is one of the best sci-fi there is. Also, you forgot to list the Ori ships, those things are huge.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Three???????
WTF?
Unless you are counting the crappy animated "Stargate: Infinity"....
EDIT: Read Gateworld, AWESOME! - Lion29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, three... they are about to end SG-1 to move amanda tapping to atlantis and to start a whole new spin-off with michael shanks!
an yes... it's a disgrace not to mention stargate ships!
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I miss Lexx
- Bakkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I never realized Lexx was so big. I guess it makes sense, since it does eat planets...
- jschrab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And considering it was a "planet buster", it kinda makes Star Wars technology look poor by comparison. I mean, the Lexx is *tiny* in comparison to the Death Star! Of course it appears smaller than Star Trek Classic's "Doomsday Machine", so I guess they get the final nod.
- Switchnig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19where's the death star
- aceman118, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I'm pretty sure every self respecting geek is aware of the size of the death star.
- rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -16/+23http://www.microsoft.com/
- EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13If the Death Star was on the chart, you wouldn't be able to see any of the other ships.
- Horseboiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Where's the TARDIS?
- TannerLD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good question. Probably along side the space shuttle somewhere.
Go Doctor Who! - Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Well it's bigger on the inside...
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It has no fixed exterior dimensions. The fact that the Doctor's TARDIS is stuck in the apparent exterior form of a police call box for the duration of the series is incidental. It could as easily be a mile-long ice cream truck from the outside, from the point of view of the technology.
- jschrab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Heh, heh, the idea of a giant ice cream truck in orbit around a planet... Sounds like "...if Ford Prefect were a Time Lord..."
- intense321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Darn it. You beat me to it. I've always wanted to know the dimensions of the INTERIOR of the TARDIS.
- TannerLD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good question. Probably along side the space shuttle somewhere.
- Trel, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2fails for no Andromeda
- Horseboiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Andromeda is on the left side.
- fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You fail, Andromeda's below Battlestar Gallactica.
- Trel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Oops, I did not say what I meant to XD
I typed that, found the Andromeda, and then meant to go back and say "not having the bigger ships from Andromeda" but I fogot and just hit submit
The origional comment can just be dugg down.
Here's my new one:
It needs to have more of the bigger ships from Andromeda. - VTmruhlin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Personally, I was offended by the fact that it DID have Andromeda. That show was terrible.
- MercuryOne, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Theres another site where you can move them around and compare them.
- DannyBoy7783, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Wow. Really. You know what would be helpful? A link.
- neggbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.merzo.net/

- Emanji, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3no death star no digg.

- pegleg1971, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33They forgot Jefferson Starship
- ebcreasoner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always wondered what the next evolution of the name would be.

- fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Thanks for sharing.
- ryodoan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hmmm.... so.. when is "your friend" planning on moving out?
- febryle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5As soon as I ^H^H I mean HE, gets a real job. :)
- Disodium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yes my friend would also like to have this as a poster, yes my friend
- Eastlygod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Come On!
Where in God's name is Red Dwarf? And the Starbug? Honestly....- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4An all the more obvious omission for the fact that the Red Dwarf is 10km long, according to Wikipedia, which would put it in a tie for second on this chart.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dwarf_ships - hottyson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. It is completely inexcusable to leave out the Red Dwarf!
- CoolGui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was wondering the same. I can't claim to have seen all the Red Dwarfs, so I'm not sure if they ever explained exactly how big it is... but they make it look humongous in the intro/credits. It also seems big from the storyline in a lot of the episodes.
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4An all the more obvious omission for the fact that the Red Dwarf is 10km long, according to Wikipedia, which would put it in a tie for second on this chart.
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is what a lot of space simulation type of games get wrong, the size ratio. X3 Reunion is the only game that I know of that gives you that sense of awe at the large and complex ships.
- rense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7EVE Online has some pretty big stuff flying around too:

- wvannus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Where's the Pillar? :(

You mean Laurence Fishburne? He was also in the matrix, how do people not know who he is?
"the black guy in that movie"
Geez. - hottyson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Laurence Fishburne is a brown guy, not a black guy.
- trehlo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3cowboy curtis
- Dilz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My sentiments exactly...
- fireboat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Too small to see any details on this....
- Eastlygod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ever heard of a little tool called zoom?
- ericdano, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah, no Stargate SG1 or Stargate Atlantis, or the NEW Battlestar Galactica. Red Dwarf, Hitchhikers Guide, Blake's 7......come on guys!
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We all know the Deadelus or Prometheus is dwarfed by a Hive Ship, and the Ori Ship would dwarf the Executor, so i guess there is no space for them.
Also, no Rommie?? Shes so hot!
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We all know the Deadelus or Prometheus is dwarfed by a Hive Ship, and the Ori Ship would dwarf the Executor, so i guess there is no space for them.
- n3xg3n, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Halo 2 Ships... WHERE????
- Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I can't believe that amongst all this decent science fiction, you want Halo 2.
- Xeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where's the Thargoid Mothership??!
- mp42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I would've added the Heart of Gold from Hitchhiker's Guide.
- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For everyone bitching about the lack of new ships, uh, the chart's from ***** 2003.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The death gliders and Ra's ship from Stargate were introduced in 1994. Of course, the good stuff didn't come until Stargate SG-1 in 1997....

come on it totaly tops all of those
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- junip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I'd like to see her in "suck" mode compared to these other so called "starships"
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2i hope i'm not the only one who hasn't ever heard of 'lexx'
- AutoShovel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A pity that none of Ian Banks's Sci Fi stuff has been made into a movie or TV program. Something like a system class or plate class ship is *huge* and mobile. If you want immobile, then he had orbitals, which of course were pioneered by Niven as "Ringworld", again that would dwarf anything on that poster.
- WildBil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Ringword can move, of course you have to burn up the sun it's ringed to do it but hey thats why you only fly it from star to star.
- WildBil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Ringword can move, of course you have to burn up the sun it's ringed to do it but hey thats why you only fly it from star to star.
- KayMan2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed, but I'm not sure if an Ori Warship would fit on the page! :)
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ori ships really aren't that big. They're smaller than a Wraith Hive, possibly even smaller than a cruiser.
- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12(All ships are pictured inside a Dyson Sphere)
- Psygnosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Look at the date in the corner July 3, 2003. It a little old, needs an update
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The hard one would be the TARDIS. Would it be shown from the inside or outside?
- intense321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, you would have to show it's actual size. That would be the INSIDE. The outside is just a technology advancement that allows a large interior to be stored in an apparent smaller exterior.
- Apokilypse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It doesn't matter who the hell you are you're going down if you face the Executor. By the way, where the hell is the Death Star?
- Ayedin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Unless of course, you're the rebel alliance.
- RidgeWalker76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope that ships like this can actually be built one day. I guess that is what using your imagination leads to eventually. I only knew of about half the ships, I don't feel worthy.
- PhoenixAshen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As geeky as this sounds, these ships and the stories around them are what made me want to be an aerospace engineer
- basketcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is so cool. It's missing a lot which we can all agree, but it still is very cool.
- johnwesely, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The United States space shuttle is science fiction?
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2a United States space shuttle *in working order* is. . .
- Pulp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd like see an updated list that includes Spaceball One (Spaceballs) and Heart of Gold (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm wheres the Jupiter2?
- connor42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The website that this poster originated from www.merzo.net has nearly all the ships that you are complaining about not being on the poster.
- Funnyman22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome comparison. Props to the uber-geek who compiled it ;-)
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They should put in the ship from Spaceballs.
- deporitaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Nothing from StarCraft? Dupe!
Other than that, it's a very impressive poster, even if there IS some controversy on whether it's stolen or not. Nice find. Err.. steal.- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dupe?
- radix76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love B5 :)
I just love that little ironic/humorous smile, the attention put into detail and story and everything else :)
One of the most entertaining SF-series imho.
Startreck (NG) is way too much 'morale-sour'.... and lacks the humor, imho.
As for ships: where is 'old man' or 'the base' or some other ship from Perry Rhodan ??? :))
They would beat most of the ships on the chart :) - alism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Everybody sing along now:
### Somebody needs a girlfriend... somebody needs a girlfriend... ###- 2Deluxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't worry, you'll get one someday.
- filipeanut, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2www.merzo.net even has Halo. So what if Halo isn't "classic" science fiction. There's a huge following behind it and it's still science fiction nonetheless. Just wait 20 years and it'll be classic. Nevermind you'll probably be dead by then.
- RidgeWalker76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well, at least they didn't forget Godzilla, and the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man!
- stoikiometry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lol, I can't believe this came to me. The Beast Planet is bigger than all combined. The Death Star is smaller than Endor's Moon (or is the moon). The Beast Planet is the size of a sun.
