The Sniper Who Killed 505 Soviet Soldiers During the Winter War
en.wikipedia.org — "Working in temperatures between −20 to −40 degrees Celsius(-4 to -40 degrees Fahrenheit), and dressed completely in a white camouflage suit, Häyhä was credited with 505 confirmed kills against Soviet soldiers."

- Iconoclast25, on 11/27/2007, -1/+9WW2 began 8/1/39 with the Nazi attack on Poland. The Red Army attack on Finland came the following November and lasted into March . . . hence the name "Winter War." It was very much after the beginning of the war. The Finns were only nominally part of the Axis - basically because they were attacked by the Soviets who became part of the Allies after they, in turn, were attacked by the Nazis in June, 1941. The Western nations recognized this, so while the Soviets seized Finnish territory and exacted heavy reparations, the Finns were never subjected to Allied occupation.

Now, if it was a soviet sniper.- xpankrat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+26Winter Was was a complete military disaster for Soviet Union. It happened a couple of years after a Great Purge of 1937, when pretty much all experienced military officers were either executed or imprisoned. There was basically noone left to plan the campaign. Soldiers were in fact a sitting ducks for Finnish army to practice on for most of the time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Purge- Beakerz, on 11/27/2007, -1/+8Wow i just read the Winter War wiki and the soviets got their asses kicked even though it was 4 to 1..
- subterfuge, on 11/26/2007, -2/+28yeah i bet he shot fewer than 505 bullets to kill those 505 soviets. you can get a good 3 or 4 with one shot during a Meat Wave Assault
- heystoopid, on 11/27/2007, -5/+6Actually not , the invading Russians had a surprising amount of modern basic infantry and superior anti tank weaponry the Finns lacked from a large number of units equipped with advanced assault rifles , medium tanks , a large amount of medium to very heavy artillery guns and an air force when flying weather permitting that often at times out numbered the Finns by up to one hundred to one !
- Iconoclast25, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Cannot comprehend why you've been dugg down for giving historically accurate information ????
- solid12345, on 11/27/2007, -0/+17One of the reasons Hitler invaded the USSR in a suprise attack is he viewed the USSR's strength on their dismal failure against the Winter War. He thought if those Finns could kick their ass he'd have control of Moscow by Christmas.
- Flakor, on 11/27/2007, -0/+6There was a Soviet Sniper who supposedly got 621 kills
- alecks, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Isn't that who Enemy at the Gates is based on?
- crappish, on 12/07/2007, -0/+0Yeah. That's Zaitsev. The guy in the movie I mean but he never managed to get even close to the numbers of Simo Häyhä. In fact two Finnish snipers (Simo Häyhä and Sulo Kolkka 400+) had more kills than Zaitsev.
- Iconoclast25, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1@markwilcox . . . you must read some history rather than make such truly uninformed comments. The Red Army of 1939 was not the Chinese army of 1951. The equipment was crude compared to that of Western armies, but it was serviceable. Note this Finnish sniper was using a rifle of Russian design. There were several NKVD divisions in the war. These were the Soviets' equivalent of the SS (on paper - in reality they were weaker than regular units) with the best equipment and over strength formations. See the comment by heystoopid.
- xpankrat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+26Winter Was was a complete military disaster for Soviet Union. - GreatToast, on 11/26/2007, -38/+24While his kills were probably justified, since he was defending his home country against an outside aggressor, let's not start thinking it's cool to kill people .
- XercesAD, on 11/26/2007, -2/+22Its not cool by any measure but its a necessary reality.

- XercesAD, on 11/26/2007, -2/+22Its not cool by any measure but its a necessary reality.
- MASTERPL, on 11/26/2007, -3/+224What is most impressive, is his use of iron sights. That has got to limit your range quite a bit, and they still couldn't spot him. Extreme patience must have been required to pull off those kills. He just couldn't afford to miss.
- danevahey, on 11/26/2007, -0/+106What is most impressive is that this DID NOT limit his range - he was shooting people from 400 yards.
- worthone, on 11/26/2007, -2/+55He didn't use a scope because it would have required him to raise his head, not much in the eyes of a layman, but enough to be killed. Secondly, he wanted to avoid reflections off the glass. Also, with freezing Finnish winters, scopes tended to steam up. He also devised additional sniping methods, among which one was to freeze the snow in front of his line of sight so that the snow would not interfere with the bullet, thus preventing tracking of his whereabouts.
While he didn't kill all of the 705 Soviets with just a sniper, what's truly incredible, however, is that he did ALL his killing in three months before he was wounded. - Battleloser, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Article said he was averaging a kill an hour during the 5 hour long days.
The Finnys are pretty famous for the massive casualties they inflicted on the invaders in this war, it's conceivable he may have just sat on a hill overlooking a road and popped off shots all day.- crappish, on 12/07/2007, -0/+0If you would know something about finnish landscape and nature, you wouldn't do such claims. Dense forests and if there was hills they had gentle slopes which make "hilltop sniping" practically unfeasible. Besides Häyhä himself have never mentioned such things, he mainly spoke of sniping in the woods.

- Ranneko, on 11/26/2007, -13/+4And to think I can't even manage 5 headshots before one of the other snipers gets me in TF2
- Asianwaste, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Quit resting your dot where the other sniper can see it.
- Wartz, on 11/27/2007, -0/+110 headshots in a row for me, but spread out over 2 rounds
- normalize, on 11/26/2007, -24/+2505 kills? this guy definitely hacks. aimbot. for sure.
- danwallace, on 11/26/2007, -0/+15Couldn't you just Digg one of the 20 or so people who have made practically the exact same joke instead of doing it again?
- Encablossa, on 11/26/2007, -14/+91Attention Diggers: Stop repeating the kill phrases or face the consequences.

- Wartz, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1actually he moved around a lot and used a scopeless rifle, say k98ish and a submachine gun, not a .50 cal sniper rifle with a gigantic zoom scope.

- JJ2K1, on 11/26/2007, -0/+27Very impressive, considering having to counter your own body shiver in that cold weather. Definitely a demoralizer for any military having to be on the receiving side of that!
- worthone, on 11/26/2007, -2/+10He had strong alcohol to keep his body active.
- loganhuddleston, on 11/26/2007, -18/+4so Bear Gryils can do that *****

- arcangelgabriel, on 11/27/2007, -2/+5Yes it is. It is also a necessary thing on occasion. This was a period when it was necessary.

- g00ee, on 11/26/2007, -19/+5I'm thinking this guy was the inspiration for the movie Enemy at the Gates? Couldn't find anything to back that up though.
- dezertrat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+9no this guy was the inspiration for that movie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Zaytsev
- g33b33, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6Nope, this guy is Finnish. Enemy at the Gates was about Soviet sniper Vasily Grigoryevich Zaytsev.

"Besides his sniper kills, Simo Häyhä was also credited with as many as two hundred kills with a Suomi M-31 SMG submachine gun, thus bringing his credited kills to at least 705. However, the latter claim has never been substantiated. All of Häyhä's kills were accomplished within 100 days prior to injuries caused by an enemy bullet. Häyhä's record of an average of 5 kills a day, almost one kill per daylight hour of the short winter day, is unique." - badmojo1961, on 11/26/2007, -1/+51FWIW, any of you diggers ever talk to your grandparents of great-grandparents about their personal, day to day experiences during WWII? No trolling, just curious.
- xtc46, on 11/27/2007, -0/+20yea, I have. I'm in Hawaii and my great grandpa was at pearl harbor when it was bombed. I find it really interesting, and the sacrifices many people made during the time were huge. My grandma talks about how they had curfews here and had t put tar paper over their windows so the lights wouldn't show up when planes were flying over head.
- ChaosMotor, on 11/27/2007, -0/+9I can't imagine why you were dugg down. My grandfather was wounded in the Korean war, and yes, I've talked to him about it.
- EntropyFan, on 11/27/2007, -0/+13My Grandfather served under Patton's 3'rd, about the Ardennes in the Battle of the Bulge. He was with the Intelligence folks, and only came under direct fire on a couple of occasions, but he said the Germans shelled the living hell out of them more then a few times.
Truly amazing. - worthone, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5I would but the grandfather on my mother's side died before I was even born due to a bullet that had been lodged into his brain since the Winter War.
- ClunkClunk, on 11/27/2007, -0/+11I need to talk to my grandfather more about it, but he served during WWII on a destroyer (USS Benson, DD-421) in both the European and Pacific theaters. I know most of the basics of where he went and when, but some of the details are a little fuzzy. Fortunately, even though his short term memory is shot, his long term memory still serves him well.
- xtc46, on 11/27/2007, -0/+9I find it kind of soothing to know that when memory starts to go, its the short term first. I mean Im sure it sucks, and its not a good thing, but at least with long term you can remember the best parts of your life. Spend the time with your grandpa while you have it. My grandfather on my mothers side died long before I was born, so all I know about him is from my grandma and the books/articles I read (my family doesn't like talking about him, he was involved with organize crime and betrayed by his best friend) and I would love to hear about his life if he were still around.
- CptBuck, on 11/27/2007, -0/+30My grandfather was at Chosin in Korea with E/2/5 of the first marine division. His company got closer to china than anyone else in the entire war. Similar conditions to this guy actually, it was the coldest winter in a hundred years, with windchill about -60 or so. They had rain slickers instead of winter gear and he said that you had to sleep on your side or your back would transfer too much heat and you'd freeze to death. He was on a machine gun on a hill when 100,000 chinese crossed the river to face off against 10,000 marines. Said that so many of them crossed the hill they all looked like ants, and they didnt have radios or anything so you'd just hear thousands of whistles and trumpets and pots and pans or whatever else the Chinese could get their hands on. Boxes of ammo back then had 250 rounds and he went through four on the first night. There was a "pile of bodies" in front of him the next morning. This was when he was about 19 years old. Anyways, they made it back and he stayed in the marines another 20 years and served in Vietnam in '68 south of DaNang, Dodge City, purple heart there cause he got part of a grenade in his eye. He always said though that nothing he saw in Vietnam held a candle to Chosin. Toughest man i ever knew.
- dlroo, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4My grandpa also fought in Korea. Don't really know where though. He served in mainly light tanks but also did some time on some half-tracks. I remember him telling a story once of what it was like to fight the Chinese. He said the first waves had guns and ammo. The second waves had just guns and picked up ammo on the way. The third, just ammo and picked up guns. And then they came with nothing and picked up both guns and ammo. Thats all I remember him saying about Korea and its been a long time since he said that so I dont know how accurate it is.
- tchynerd, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Yeah my grampa was a Norwegian resistance fighter in WWII. He used to tell me lots of stories about going through the minefields to give food to the soviet prisoners being held by the Germans. He also used to have to make medical runs to get injured resistance fighters and then disguise them as injured Germans so they could get full treatment. Lots of really interesting stories like that.
- killerpopiller, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2my grandfather actually was as a german soldier in norway, wasn´t that bloody I think - he even had a girlfriend and she became pregnant - but he wasn´t allowed to stay there, so he had to turn back. I think he wished to stay there but he settled at the "wrong" part of post war germany. I´d really like to find that girlfriend and their family but seems hard - he is dead and we only have a forename of her :(
and for the guys with the dirty imagination, don´t think my grandpa raped her, he was a nice guy and looked really good (his genes got lost :(

- Wartz, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4my grandpa served on a destroyer in the Mediterranean and later a pocket carrier escorting convoys across the atlantic. his ships were attacked by subs and aircraft many times, but they were never hit. My other grandpa was a cook at a R&R center in france before being trucked off to help in the counter attacks at the battle of the bulge. He broke his leg in 3 places though on the way there so he never saw combat.
- TripcodeMel, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5My grandpa was a paratrooper in World War II - total badass, saved the lives of a couple of guys - but he never talked about it and my dad never really learned that much about it, either. He passed away in '94, God bless him.
- yoyobye, on 11/27/2007, -1/+3My Grandmother worked for the Nazis at the age of 16 when they occupied Norway as an assistant. She never told me any more than that. I could tell she was pretty upset about it, but now that she's gone, I really wish I had pursued it further.
- geegel, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3My grandpa fought against the Soviets in Crimea, near Sevastopol. When Romanians changed sides and began fighting the Nazis, his regiment didn't. As a result he spent about 6 years on a forced "vacation" in the gulags of Siberia.
This is the part he told me most about. Imagine a huge death toll, famine to the point of cannibalism (necrophagia to be more accurate) and tales of escaping. The only people that managed the latter were 2 German officers who knew the Russian language. The rest (including those in the first category) met with untimely deaths. He passed away in 2001. May he rest in peace - sbgunn, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Through my dad, I know my grand-dad fought in the Battle of the Bulge, was pinned down with his legs in a river long enough that they were nearly frozen and he got a Purple Heart for that. He refused to let them amputate his feet afterward, so he walked kindof awkwardly. For at least some time he was a medic, but kept a pistol in his helmet anyway. He also had some stories about guys buying smokes for huge amounts of cash before going into fight.
- FiremanJersey, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2My neighbor was fighter pilot running bomber escorts over Europe. He was actually shot down over France. He parachuted to safety and French citizens rushed from their homes to where he landed. They hid him in a farmhouse until the French resistance was contacted. Then, over a period of a few weeks, he was moved nightly from house to house until they were able to make it to safety in allied territory. Every one of the people who helped hide him, all regular French citizens, would have been executed by the Germans if they were found out. He calls them all heros. He received several medals and has them in a frame hanging on his wall. Pretty cool!
