EDIT doppleganger- TalkingBanana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who do people always digg down double posts? It's not the poster's fault.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes it is

- endlessoul, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10That was a heinous video, but did they need to show him in his underoos at the end? He's been humiliated enough.
- mustache, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13They left out the part after that where they all violently rape him.
- nksoccer13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Sweet mother of god, his bike exploded.
- thatchimp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23completely insane.... dugg because that takes some major stones.
- MerryMortician, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3it would be harder to go faster even if you jumped the bike off the side of the mountain.. that ***** was sick!
- etruscan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I thought it was going to be fast, but when I realized it was 210km/h - damn... my Civi locks up at 170... at that's ***** fast.
- NoNamesLeft, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3I can't digg someone with a helmet that silly.
- likwidfuzion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18I'd like to see you try to ride down that mountain on a bike without a helmet that silly.
- TeCuervo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Had that been me the bike would have made it to it's destination alright... and maybe the silly helmet...
- darkside23, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23damn i though i was bad-ass for going 65 downhill and almost getting a speeding ticket.
- dig88, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Yeah.It is the Andes........
- goodkidyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1agreed, to chime in 3rdly on the subject... it is the Andes. :o
- uselessexpert, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Freaking nuts! I admire all thrill/speed freaks, but I also don't feel bad when they get injured or kill themselves doing some of those crazy stunts.
It comes with the territory. - whogivesafrak, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40I think George Lucas should release a special Star Wars DVD where the stormtroopers are wearing Red Bull helmets.
- rushiku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Wow, that's fast!
and
Wow, who edited the video? Stevie Wonder? - DeFex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22the thing is. on the page it says "how does he stop" and tells you to look at the video which does not show how he stopped.
- changyang1230, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8"See the video below, wherein Stoeckl makes it all look effortless."
I guess the "it all" refers to the whole ride, not the stopping.

- Wolfboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3re: "No Alps in Chile" - an alp is a German term for a high mountain and evidently it's used in Chile because part of the Andes were settled by Germans.
Travel report about "Chile's Alps":
"Chile's Alps: Land of Lakes and Volcanoes"

"Much of the district looks like the German and Swiss Alps. It can sound that way too, since many of the original settlers were from Germany and still speak the language." - LawJik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Because of the extreme cold, Hercules had to hold his breath for the 40 second duration so his helmet didn't fog up....
- tritiumpie, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1What skill! Gravity + funny helmet + hang on = World Record and "I'm so proud of myself I gotta roll around in the snow afterwards!"
That's some talent there, oh yeah. - MasterFunk, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1He must train regularly...
- snotrokit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8holy crap, I used to race downhill, where we would hit 50/60 mph on a regular basis, which is scary enough, but daaaaaamn. That is friggin crazy.
Dugg. - compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4saw this video a few years back but still it's amazing to go that fast with out even pedalling just coasting and letting gravity do it all
- kcornwell, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29fake:
He wasn't peddling.- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I lol'd.
- SnuffTheRooster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Was he pedaling though?

This was done a stock mountain bike in La Parva, Chile. He had the old record. He's going to try to beat another guys record(222km/h, 137.94) on a prototype bike in 2008. - agenthamsta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that's pretty damn crazy.. but cool as *****.
- WorldRTomi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1not that impressive if you consider he didn't even had to pedal. Jose Meiffret was already doing 127mph (average speed in a 1km distance) on flat 45 years ago (drafted by a racing car).
http://cycling.ahands.org/bicycling/datewithdeath. ...
The record was beaten by John Howard in 1985 with an average speed of 152mph . - Skooma714, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm surprised he didn't bite it at that speed. I slip on ice and snow walking, one little jerk sideways could see him in the hospital for months.
- mas6700, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1To tell the truth I'm not really convinced he did 130 mph. Do downhill skiers hit 130 mph? If not then how can a bicycle with the extra drag from spinning wheels with lots of spokes and down tubes go faster? I doubt that the extra 25 or 30 lbs of the bike would provide enough extra pull to get someone to move faster than the terminal velocity of a downhill skier. How was he being clocked by the way? It's also hard to imagine how the bike would remain stable at such a speed with highly unbalanced wheels from the valves spinning around at two or three thousand rpm.
On the other hand, whether or not he really hit 130 mph you've got to have a real serious 'need for speed' to try this. Doing 60 mph on big downhills on my roadbike is scary enough.- wellyuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0*sigh* Because they made the video and pretended he did it as opposed to getting it officially timed and then blurting it out all over the news and the internet, with the intention of pulling the wool over everyones eyes.
No, downhill skiers don't do 130mph, but downhill skiing rarely features 45 degree slopes and aerodynamic body suits and helmets. However, speed skiers hit more than 130mph - http://speedski.com/PhilippeBilly.htm / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw5doHjd0Ug.
I suppose you have doubts about legitimacy of that as well? Just because your pseudo-physics can't explain it, doesn't mean it's not possible.- mas6700, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well I guess I didn't explain my reasoning clearly. I was thinking of ski jumpers who go down what I would assume is at least a 45 degree slope before they launch, not slalom skiers. The speed skier in your links are highly aerodynamic right down to their boots so sure I can see them hitting 150 mph. There's also nothing "pseudo" about my physics of two 26 inch 32 spoke wheels spinning at (solving for the wheel's tangential velocity and then dividing by the wheel's radius to get it's rotational velocity) 130 mph X 5280 ft / 3600 sec / (13/12 in/ft) * 60 sec/min = 10,560 rpm. So you have two wheels with anywhere from 26 to 32 spokes spinning at nearly 10,000 rpm. That's gonna produce a huge amount of drag not to mention the guy isn't inside a aerodynamic shell so there's also a huge amount of body (form) drag. So yeah, I'm not convinced. Maybe if they zoomed in on his Cateye speedometer/computer afterward and showed it recording a top speed of 130 mph I'd be more convinced. Or a radar. But until I see that I'm having a hard time believing it.
- parsap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The answer is that the drag produced by the friction of the spokes against air is completely drowned out by the fact that the friction of the bike's wheels against the snow (virtually non existent) is much, much less than a long ski sliding against the snow.

- HyperZiper, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Ha. Im Chilean. I do that all time.
sike...
but since when do we frkn have alps??? since when did they change the andes to alps? - musntSurfatWork, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm sorry, but having a finger on your brake lever while in 'mid-flight' like that? I don't personally think that was for any other reason other than for sheer ' adrenaline' but, applying brakes on a near frictionless surface at 210km'hr is pretty much useless as ***** on a bull.
- o0adam0o, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Aaah, Run! Itsa a Mandalorian!
- JDRM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Good thing he was wearing padding
Bet it would hurt falling off that thing if he didn't! - p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The last time I went 125 mph, I was riding in a patrol car code 3 with a deputy buddy of mine. We had 4 tires & steel around us. He asked me if going that fast bothered me. I said nope, you're the one driving, plus, if anything happened, it would be over too quick to think about it.
- brianez21, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That's almost 133.7 mph! =)
- coachace, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I loved the close up of the hand brakes. What a waste of useless weight on the bike.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The comments under the video are pretty damn funny.
- feross, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1How does Red Bull have enough money to sponsor so many sporting events? Do they really sell THAT many energy drinks?
- zammit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4well, considering the # of people (mainly students) who drink red bull and vodka...
