Zero Punctuation: Webcomics
escapistmagazine.com — This week, Yahtzee takes apart the making of a successful gaming webcomic, or: how to make millions of gamers happy with the minimum amount of effort.

- hamstu, on 07/02/2008, -10/+198I'm going to play it safe by NOT starting a web comic.
- Elliuotatar, on 07/02/2008, -6/+36He didn't say web comic, he said video game web comic!
- punkcat, on 07/02/2008, -1/+41dont encourage him.
- TimBuckley, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Less competition for me then?
- Elliuotatar, on 07/02/2008, -6/+36He didn't say web comic, he said video game web comic!
- Philosomatika, on 07/02/2008, -81/+9Maybe if I make a comment early on people will Digg me up and I shall feel loved.
- antiorblkflag9, on 07/02/2008, -3/+45Nope
- Philosomatika, on 07/02/2008, -2/+19I was being sarcastic but oh well.
- Odaecom, on 07/02/2008, -8/+5You''ll feel loved, although, only from behind since this is the internet.
- antiorblkflag9, on 07/02/2008, -3/+45Nope
- antiorblkflag9, on 07/02/2008, -44/+6Strong Bad did this a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, I think Strong Bad's was better.
- daRoach, on 07/02/2008, -8/+11Who?
- Matt2k, on 07/02/2008, -3/+22Strong Bad
- protogenxl, on 07/02/2008, -3/+4BLASPHEMY!
- santa7, on 07/02/2008, -7/+8I'm sorry, I'm not 12 and still visit Homestarrunner.com
- BSeffrood, on 07/03/2008, -3/+1Strong Bad = Gay
Yahtzee = Cool
- daRoach, on 07/02/2008, -8/+11Who?
- H1tchh1k3r, on 07/02/2008, -64/+2I'm not even going to try and make up a clever comment, so hah.
Digg me down, do it.- Me1000, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13Then please do us a favor and dont comment at all!
- H1tchh1k3r, on 07/02/2008, -5/+4That would be too easy.
- Me1000, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13Then please do us a favor and dont comment at all!
- jaychuck, on 07/02/2008, -34/+13Haha, he made fun of that miscarriage comic from Ctrl+Alt+Dlt. ***** stupid. B^U
- Bilabrin, on 07/02/2008, -6/+9I'm thinking he also took a swipe at Cyanide and Happiness a bit too.
- LaminatedParrot, on 07/02/2008, -3/+4Yes, that well known VIDEO GAME web comic.
- elnerdo, on 07/02/2008, -3/+18I don't think so. Cyanide and Happiness's "Depressing Comic Week" isn't drama. It's ironic humor.
The entire thing was a hit at Control Alt Delete, really. - blahtastic, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6Depressing Comic Week is ironically hilarious.
While on the subject of CAD's being a cad and Cyanide and Happiness' awesomeness, http://www.explosm.net/comics/1310/ .
Ahh, explosm. They need to do another Interactive Story though.
- forceuser, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6B^U
I hate CAD too.
- Bilabrin, on 07/02/2008, -6/+9I'm thinking he also took a swipe at Cyanide and Happiness a bit too.
- BlackTye, on 07/02/2008, -29/+110If he didn't include the "Very much aware of the hypocrisy" bit at the end, I may have had an issue with this one.
- Defuser, on 07/02/2008, -7/+81Why? It's hardly hypocrisy when someone who IS funny attacks people who AREN'T. He put in the "hypocrisy" thing solely as a means of heading of people like you, who seem to believe that EVERYTHING is "hypocrisy".
- dafragsta, on 07/02/2008, -14/+8XKCD is funny. I'm not part of any XKCD fanclub or anything, so yeah, I get the joke, but I don't entirely agree. I agree wholeheartedly about people who find moderate success and a following, which turns some people into dramatic douchebags.
- planksconstant, on 07/02/2008, -1/+40who said anything about XKCD?
- MasterGrief, on 07/02/2008, -0/+38I don't think he was making fun of XKCD, man...
- santa7, on 07/02/2008, -1/+45Mostly cause XKCD isn't a gaming comic
- kevlarbaboon, on 07/02/2008, -14/+12or funny
- piwy, on 07/02/2008, -2/+5The hit wasn't on XKCD. It was on megatokyo. Dom day or whatever they are called. I usually skip them.
- Zincyams, on 07/03/2008, -4/+1What is this XKCD you speak of?
I know of this webcomic called "xkcd" though. - heucuva, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Yams.
Yams are funny.
Not nearly as funny as kumquats, though.
- BlackTye, on 07/02/2008, -12/+4Yep, everything is hypocrisy, let me go get my tinfoil hat.
But seriously, comics like Penny Arcade are reasonably funny. It seems unfair for Yahtzee to gang on webcomics as a whole. It's not like he's the absolute god of gaming humor. Now calm down and stop trying to generalize me.- feoren, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7Hypocrisy . . . tinfoil hat? I don't see the connection between hypocrisy and paranoia/conspiracy theory, unless tinfoil hats keep the government's hypocrisy out of your head. If so, sign me up!
- jack_of_knaves, on 07/02/2008, -1/+32Well, Yahtzee wasn't generalizing per se. It's more that he couldn't title it "Zero Punctuation: Ctrl+Alt+Del" So he went with the less direct but easily distinguishable title. It's easy to understand when you know what exactly he's referencing.
- GreyICE, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5Yeah, this was clearly Ctrl+Alt+Del that he was referencing. I can't really figure out how he could have made it clearer.
There was a lot wrong with megatokyo, and many other gaming comics deserve the hate, but Ctrl+Alt+Del was the target. - twiztidsinz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Mega Tokyo stopped being a gaming comic looooooong ago, and even when it was a gaming comic, it wasn't really the main focus. It was a comic about gamers who went to Japan and got stuck there.
- GreyICE, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5Yeah, this was clearly Ctrl+Alt+Del that he was referencing. I can't really figure out how he could have made it clearer.
- norm7, on 07/02/2008, -4/+2Couldn't have been any worse than the issue most diggers had, being as they are slavishly and blindly devoted to both ZeroPunc and Webcomics, and thus suffered a condition known as "exploding head syndrome."
- NecroSexy, on 07/03/2008, -4/+3Have an issue with it? Do you mean crying like a bitch?
- Defuser, on 07/02/2008, -7/+81Why? It's hardly hypocrisy when someone who IS funny attacks people who AREN'T. He put in the "hypocrisy" thing solely as a means of heading of people like you, who seem to believe that EVERYTHING is "hypocrisy".
- SwornPacifist, on 07/02/2008, -15/+385The miscarriage comics that Yahtzee made fun of are from Ctrl+Alt+Del, and here's the "dramatic" point of the story:
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20080 ...
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20080 ...
Yahtzee totally nailed it, CAD really f'd up a decent formula and showed how much of a sub-par Penny Arcade clone it really is.- mklopez, on 07/02/2008, -53/+9So, how would have any other webcomic tackled this issue?
The characters in CAD were having a baby. Both were too young to be responsible parents and they were aware of it. But they were willing to go with it. I suppose they could have added the baby to the cast, or they could have given him/her in adoption shortly after realizing they couldnt handle parenthood. Getting rid of the storyline via a miscarriage may have not been the most popular option, but at least it was handled in a good, mature way, IMHO.
The best webcomic characters evolve, have changes, grow into more that 2 dimensions (no pun intended). Two mayor characters in PvP got married. Are we going to have the same net discussion if they have an "unwanted pregnancy" storyline?- Mewchu11, on 07/02/2008, -1/+70So, how would have any other webcomic tackled this issue?
They wouldn't. At least no comic that intends to be funny. It's just not something you do.
It's like having the main female character getting raped in an alleyway or something. Yes it could happen but it's not SUPPOSE to happen in a world of [attempted] joy and laughter - alexforcefive, on 07/02/2008, -3/+27You know what they should have done, take the high road like WWE did and just have Kane kick the bitch in the womb
- Otto, on 07/02/2008, -3/+36Dude, it's a comic strip. Why have your main characters have to deal with any sort of real-life issues in the first ***** place?
The problem wasn't the miscarriage, the problem was the author thinking that it would be a good idea to get one of his main characters pregnant. It's not funny. It's not humorous. Your characters do not have to "grow". They're characters.
Hell, nobody liked when Bill Watterson or Charles Shultz did that sort of ***** either, what makes the author think he's any different? - 171ContriteArc, on 07/02/2008, -3/+49"handled in a good, mature way"
He spent about five strips dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy, and now he's going back to cracking lame about PS3s and robotic intelligences.
Give the man a Pulitzer. - Trifold, on 07/02/2008, -0/+35The best webcomic characters evolve? Really? I was always of the opinion that the best webcomic characters are funny.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/02/2008, -1/+11WTF does this have to do with video games?
- mbraynard, on 07/02/2008, -1/+10Yeah, I guess that's easier than, you know, being funny.
- Mewchu11, on 07/02/2008, -1/+70So, how would have any other webcomic tackled this issue?
- ensta2, on 07/02/2008, -4/+62Wow that was extremely depressing..
- Tyrghast, on 07/02/2008, -5/+69Yeah I was in the 'prick' crowd on the CAD forums, calling it the easy way out having to work another regular character in and blah blah blah. The worst part is Tim's lack of ability to accept criticism, its always "I can do what I want and you can go read something else".
- roket21, on 07/02/2008, -2/+7I was taken aback by those comics at first but I then I thought maybe he went though a similar experience in real life.
- Dumbledorito, on 07/02/2008, -3/+17roket21: Well, many people have wished that Buckley had been a miscarriage, but alas, he was merely born retarded.
- ta10n, on 07/02/2008, -4/+16According to one of his posts, he did experience a real life situation...
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/news.php?i=1636
Meh, while the whole thing was little shocking. I didn't mind it. Kinda nice to see an artist willing to discuss real life and give his character's some depth. - Maver1c, on 07/02/2008, -11/+5@rocket21
He did, it was in a news-post.
By the way I like how everyone is sucking Yahtzee's ***** right now, throwing this story-line into the cad universe just makes it more real and enjoyable for people who actually enjoy the characters and don't go for the cheap laughs. It's not a gaming comic, it's a comic about gamers. - Dumbledorito, on 07/03/2008, -3/+4"It's not a gaming comic, it's a comic about gamers."
Uh-huh. That and PvP, which has also gone down the sit-com drama road. Buckley was always an egotistical Penny-Arcade wanna-be, and this latest story just shows he can't handle a narrative and maintain what his comic was built on.
I'm not the world's largest Gabe & Tycho fan, but they managed to get married and have kids and not bludgeon you over the head with it while still making those events part of their work. And whether or not they're funny, their humor/work/whatever hasn't degraded into pathetic attempts at emo creative writing that makes slash fanfic look well thought out.
I've never thought highly of Buckley's work, and I don't need Yahtzee or anyone else to give me permission to think it sucks; That was already a given.
- bigfatpaulie, on 07/02/2008, -6/+88Liar. CAD never had a decent formula.
- Bilabrin, on 07/02/2008, -3/+235Oh SNAP!
Now I finally understand THIS:
http://www.explosm.net/comics/1310/
Had no idea what to make of it until I saw your post!- joemofo214, on 07/02/2008, -4/+42explosm is the best webcomic out there. i love it
- fatb0y42, on 07/02/2008, -2/+36cyanide and happiness ftww :)
- sloo, on 07/02/2008, -2/+69Yeah, the whole speech bubble is what he said in the news post. Just no class, at all.
Cyanide and Happiness >>>>>>> CAD - cryonix, on 07/02/2008, -5/+4prof of concept when you read the spoof first and laugh for other contextual reasons. then read the source material and go WTF.
I wonder if CAD has seen 'Sex is Zero'.
If you have seen it, then you know what I'm getting at. If not, That's one hell of a movie. Act 1 plays like American pie. The movie presents itself as one thing, then kicks you in the balls for Act 2.
- arjung, on 07/02/2008, -4/+34wow, CAD used to be so good, too. I stopped reading long before Ethan proposed to Lilah, but that is a stupid plotline for a webcomic about video games.
- MasterGrief, on 07/02/2008, -1/+20I've been reading CAD since it first came out, and I've seen the art improve while everything else degraded. It was pretty depressing. Then this ridiculous miscarriage storyline came up and it went from "pretty depressing" to "I think I'm finally done reading this comic now". I remember seeing the beginnings of the dead baby story, and I thought at that point, what is Tim thinking? As a man who is supposedly running a funny gaming webcomic(for there can be no other kind), what in God's name made him think it would be okay to introduce severe hardship to the main character? I've seen other popular comics want some drama, and they did something a little differently: They made a new comic for the drama! Ahg, it's irritating.
- Linkin4, on 07/02/2008, -7/+38Yeah they ***** up, abortions are way more funny.
- sovietninja, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Especially when a superjerk is behind it:
http://www.explosm.net/comics/1325/
Also, even though this is not a gaming comic, he was ripping on both the explosm and xkcd tophat wearing people.
- sovietninja, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Especially when a superjerk is behind it:
- Striss, on 07/02/2008, -10/+5I enjoyed CAD quite a bit until this whole storyline started...now I can't even read it anymore, it's broken and he's gone way off course of making a gaming web-comic...RIP to CAD.
- Maver1c, on 07/02/2008, -6/+2It's funny bc its a comic about gamers (more focused on the main characters who happen to play games), and not just a gaming web-comic with 2-dimensional characters for Tim to throw ***** jokes off of. But hey, I guess that's why you don't like it.
- wolferz, on 07/02/2008, -50/+39@ every one in this thread
Why? I'm sorry I don't see the problem. Why was that plot line such a horrible one?
Ethan has been a very one dimensional character from the start. Sure it's good for gags when Ethan sticks his head into a toilet trying to see if he can find the car keys he dropped and gets his head stuck instead... but that kind of gag can't last forever. Introducing a new character would not have given an opportunity for the character development Ethan badly needed. Lilah dumping Ethan on his wedding day might have worked but would have been less believable as Ethan would likely have just shrugged it off after a few days and it would have meant no more Lilah in the comic.
But you know I can see where people who came for gags might be irritated that something as horrible as a little bit of seriousness were injected into the comic. But you know what else? He's right. It IS his comic. He DOES have the right to do with it whatever he wants. You DON'T have to read it if you don't like it. More importantly than all that is that he DOESN'T have to care if you stop reading it.
What do you expect? For him to bow before you and beg for forgiveness? I could give the now cliched line about "when you have a semi-successful web comic you can critique some one else'..." and it is still a valid argument... but I don't even have to. The fact that you think him not agreeing with you or bowing down to your opinions makes him incapable of taking criticism shows you frankly don't understand the different between criticism and demanding *****. Maybe he considered the criticism and then decided your way wasn't the way he wanted to go.
The argument that video game web comics should not be serious is about as valid as the argument that video games should never contain "serious" content or, if they do, should make it into a gag. I'm sorry but not every web comic should be penny arcade just as not every game should be Mario. In fact the main reason I read CAD is because it DOESN'T copy Penny Arcade and I'm sick and tired of the copy cats. Penny Arcade has consistently been one strip gags about games and the game industry while CAD has consistently had story lines about the lives of gamers. Nether FORMULA is necessarily better than the other even though one COMIC is clearly more than the other. If you don't like CAD's formula then don't read it... oh wow that sounds familiar.
In the end it boils down to you guys don't like where the comic has gone and you think Tim should change it to make you happy. Get over yourselves... and any time I can tell some one to get over themselves with a straight face you know they are on a ***** high horse cause I'm permanently attached to mine.- silverstrike, on 07/02/2008, -6/+23No thanks. Its up for all to see, and therefore we'll go about commenting on it and expressing our dislike. If you don't like it, don't read the comments :-P
See how ***** stupid that argument sounds now? - Browzer, on 07/02/2008, -13/+7I dugg you up. Hopefully it will do some good.
- kootron, on 07/02/2008, -8/+24tl;dr
Go to bed, Buckley. - WhereAmI, on 07/02/2008, -6/+10Sure he can do what he wants with his comic.
Just he can do it without me reading it everyday now.
I'm going to miss Ted the most. - LocalScope, on 07/02/2008, -1/+8Dont even know why you are trying. Personally I see Tim's miscarriage a hell of a lot better than Kurtz's cliche Jade scare.
Jade: I might be preggers
Brent: OH Noes! Scared Guy!
Jade: Nope False alarm!
Brent: Oh I am actually sad.
Seriously what save by the bell clone did you take that from?
The web video game comic scene is overflowing with artists who are full of themselves and not a single one of the comics is consistently funny. I will only give props to PA because of child's play and the real impact they have made in helping people. - dafragsta, on 07/02/2008, -8/+4OK, you don't get the difference between a 3 panel comic and a comic book do you? A 3 panel comic is supposed to be funny 100% of the time. PA gets away with deviating because their dramatic one-offs because they aren't part of the main PA story, and even their drama has a good dose of humor, and it's NEVER as heavy as a ***** miscarriage.
- bigfatpaulie, on 07/02/2008, -2/+12Uwe Boll is free to point out he's made more movies than me. That doesn't mean his films aren't heaping piles of *****.
- hotpuck6, on 07/02/2008, -4/+5I read comics because they are supposed to be funny.
That was not funny.
End of argument.
You lose. - Demener, on 07/02/2008, -4/+8I like PA, CAD, and ZP. Maybe the miscarriage arc seemed out of place but it didn't personally bother me.
PA and CAD are sufficiently different for me to enjoy both. ZP hits some of the facts right on the head, but that's not going to stop me from reading CAD.
You don't have to agree with everything someone says to like their work. - wolferz, on 07/02/2008, -9/+6@silverstrike
Nope... cause your point is entirely valid...
I'm just an ***** like you is all.
@dafragsta
Yeh hold on a sec...
http://www.sluggy.com/
Sluggy Freelance, quite possibly the biggest web coming on the internet short of Penny Arcade and easily one of the longest running. 99% of the strips are 4-5 panels long and, while most of the strips end in a gag, go back and read the That Which Redeems, Fire & Rain, and Dangerous Days story arcs. Sluggy by itself invalidates your claim.
http://www.questionablecontent.net/
Questionable Content is another successful (ie self sufficient) web comic that is both comic strip format and deals with some more serious issues, such as suicide and mental illness.
http://www.drunkduck.com/Between_Failures/
Between Failures is nether successful nor self sufficient... yet... However it, as it's main premise, deals with the way early adult hood tends to be the most trying time for many people and has quite the steady following.
http://thelounge.comicgenesis.com/
The Lounge is a general geek web comic about life in a all-things-geek shop. It also deals with issues such as lesbianism and rape.
I can go on.
@bigfatpaulie
And the fact that his movies are heaping piles of ***** doesn't mean you know more about making movies than him.
@hotpuck6
I lose cause I don't accept your preferences as the only possibly way to think? Sorry no doesn't work that way.
Any one else want a go?
@demener
I honestly didn't know there was a controversy about it till I saw this Zero Punctuation. - babylonian, on 07/02/2008, -2/+10Yes, he's free to do whatever he wants with "HIS comic", but that doesn't make him immune to people calling him out on his *****.
No one's saying he can't do whatever he wants with it, but if what he wants to do is make his already awful webcomic even worse, he should expect a lot of criticism. It's especially funny because everyone already knew Tim Buckley was a prick before all this. It's just mind-boggling that even he would think a MISCARRIAGE STORY ARC in a VIDEO GAME WEBCOMIC was a good decision. - Jeepy, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3I think you would fall into the hardcore fans that go along with it anyway category, sorry. I stopped frequenting CAD after the whole Ethan engagement thing. When he goes back to making jokes about how long Night Elves' necks are I'll check it out again, but I'll leave the Days of Our Lives stuff to people who crave "character development".
- maadmonkey, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3tl;dr
- Fightermelee, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5I don't come to digg to read books!
- wolferz, on 07/02/2008, -3/+2@babylonian
Why wouldn't it be? That's my point. It is your opinion that it isn't and there is nothing mind boggling about some one else not sharing it.
@jeepy
Except that I'm not. If ctrl alt delete disappeared from the internet tonight and never came back I'd just delete it form my book marks and move on. In the end whether you like the rout it has taken or not is completely a matter of preference... nothing more. Yet people are sitting around talking about how it is ruined and how it was stupid. This is what pisses me off. If this had happened with any other comic or game or movie or book my response would be the same... in fact if you take a look at my past comments you will find a tirade regarding Transformers that is very similar. It's not about CTRL ALT DELETE for me... it's about people thinking that their opinion on some one else' work is should have more of an impact than the opinion of the creator. That's a level of arrogance that just doesn't sit well with me. I fall into the hardcore reasonable people that don't get mad at some one for not doing things my way category.
There's only one comic that I would be bothered if it dissappeared, and that's sluggy... and I would probably cry.
- silverstrike, on 07/02/2008, -6/+23No thanks. Its up for all to see, and therefore we'll go about commenting on it and expressing our dislike. If you don't like it, don't read the comments :-P
- rockchops, on 07/02/2008, -4/+10I've been waiting for someone to wail on CAD as it deserved for a long time. A long history of undue popularity, deservedly criticized if you ask me.
- metalsiren, on 07/02/2008, -2/+30I'm surprised no one mentioned http://badwebcomics.blogspot.com/2007/06/ctrlaltde ...
- priceless721, on 07/02/2008, -5/+3wow that is truly one of the worst comics i have ever read, i almost never read it and i do not know the characters but that is some of the lowest par horrible writing i have ever witnessed, that "i played football in high school" friend that thinks he is a terrible friend has some of the most diluted and terrible lines i have ever read, it made me pine for more memorable writing moments such as ones i would find on daytime soap operas that should win a freakin' emmy next to this dump.
by the way wolferz you seem to read this comic far far too much,(do you write it?) i may be wrong but when you delve that deep into webcomic philosophy it may be time to rethink your goals and efforts put forth in this very short life you have. Not trying to be mean here just telling you something your friends SHOULD be telling you. - TheSpore, on 07/02/2008, -18/+13I know a bunch of diggers are trying to get angry over essentially nothing, but I'll offer a rebuttal to the arguments of the lynch mob trying to hang CAD.
First, CAD is not a video game comic, it's a comic that happens to contain video games sometimes, probably because the author is a gamer himself. There's no need to whine when the story deviates from the subject.
Secondly, CAD is story comic. Not all "comics" are light-hearted 3-panel punchlines that have a continuity of at most a week. One popular print comic which does this is For Better or For Worse, although many comics feature serious topics once in a while. I know not everyone likes this style of comic, but it seems CAD is getting a lot of grief for what is a common practice.
Finally, the creative control of a comic is entirely within the hands of the author. That's the rule for almost every comic, and many other creative works too. If you want to send constructive criticism to the author, fine. But instead of whining on every forum and comment section on the internet about how the author won't take your advice, just STOP READING THE COMIC.- InfinitySnatch, on 07/02/2008, -4/+9It's not enough to just ignore it. It's the fact it exists that's upsetting. Like AIDS.
- maadmonkey, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7Your defending a comic by comparing it to For Better Or For Worst? Is that really the best you could come up with?
- dzhastin, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Thank you for enlightening us! Before today I thought all comics were mandated by law to be like Garfield - 3 panels and an optional punchline. You've opened my eyes. I must also check this "For Better Or For Worse" you speak of. It sounds like a true masterpiece of comic literature.
- axeman61, on 07/02/2008, -8/+1They couldn't have just given the baby up for adoption?

- Gregus1032, on 07/02/2008, -7/+3i knew that he was bashing ctrl alt del specifically when he started describing the girlfriend. im just surprised that yahtzee didn't just come out and say the name. kind of cowardly, but i agree with a lot of the points. the creator of ctrl alt del can say that 'it was never really a "gaming" comic' all he wants.but the comic was 98% game related until ethan proposed to lilah. I still read it for the game related jokes since a lot of them (in my opinion) are quite funny. the story line is just skip over material.
i just call ctrl alt del a gaming comic that gets thrown off track every once in a while - themastersb, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2I knew he was referring to that and as soon as he mentioned it I loled.
- noin, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5I've been wishing Yahtzee properly ripped CAD to shreds ever since he first started slightly poking at it once in a while so today's ep is a dream come true!
I mean really, CAD is a perfect example of just how horribly you can mess up something brilliant. And how to be a *****.. - Retrodigg123, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2Thanks Yahtzee for nailing what everyone was thinking about those RETARDED Ctrl alt Delete comincs, like wtf, who takes web comics that seriously? Anybody who does, its called a tv, and its called ER you dumb morons.
- sab0tage, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Comics aren't supposed to be funny now?
- Gregus1032, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2there are a few popular comics out there that can be serious from time to time. not to mention, super hero comics.
- Ablue, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9I quit reading CAD because of that story arc. It was becoming just too stupid.
- DNABeast, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3I ran a modestly successful comic many years ago and ran a strip similar to this one about a female character needing surgery for some sort of gynecological issue. Man, My audience went nuts. The forums caught fire with polite abuse.
- Rodalli, on 07/03/2008, -9/+3Let me take a wild shot in the dark here: no one who has posted negative comments about CAD in this thread is an artist or has ever attempted to create something in their life.
You have no ***** idea how hard it is. Give the guy a break and let him do what he wants with HIS art without calling him names and acting like a bunch of *****.- RunnyBabbit, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3I don't have to be a cook to say the food tastes bad.
- chillypacman, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3CAD started sucking after the xbox robot was introduced, been going downhill since.
*BUT* In Buckley's defense, he did say he wasn't going to joke about the miscarriage and he didn't. - Roland1232, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Speaking of which, do the Penny Arcade guys really make that much money? I know they have their own expo and all, but I thought that was more of a joint effort by all companies involved. I do know Gabe drives a Mercedes.
- mklopez, on 07/02/2008, -53/+9So, how would have any other webcomic tackled this issue?
- sonicjosh, on 07/02/2008, -18/+10Also my hat is stupid and there are too many ads at the end of my video.

- takuansoho, on 07/02/2008, -1/+21Your username is "trusttimothy" and the comic is done by Timothy Buckley. Hmmmmm...
- trusttimothy, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1damn, you have me! My plan was so good ... and now this little detail which went unnoticed brings me down! No, seriously, you really believe that? http://www.cadsucks.com/- finnishgeek, on 07/02/2008, -2/+6Most of those comics are just cad comics minus the last panel. It's poor quality comedy. They should try to be more original in their comedy, rather than just following penny-arcade's 3 panel design to make cad comics "funny".
- Gop3588, on 07/02/2008, -0/+20Evidently he also takes Perry Bible Fellowship comics and makes them unfunny.
- trunicated, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8I'm pretty sure he's making the point that CAD has a lot of un-needed dialogue. which it does. Honestly, the three panel versions of the comics are just as funny, if not funnier, simply because they're simpler. It's not forcing the joke down your throat, like CAD does.
also, most of it should be copied and pasted

- CyberSol, on 07/02/2008, -31/+52You know, for once I would like to see a normal comments section on a zero punctuation submission. Is there some sort of unwritten rule that all comments about zero punctuation must be:
1. must be really stupid
2. about how the comments suck (like this comment)
3. about comments that are usual comments (generic fanboi comment)
4. other stuff that happens more often in here then other places.
I liked this weeks video, and I think he makes a few valid points on the way web comics are perceived. My only beef its that if you don't like the web comic then you don't have to look at it, you can go somewhere else. I wonder if Yahtzee will review/analyze other media forms now?- ELLIS1128, on 07/02/2008, -14/+7Buried because you contradicted yourself by submitting a 'really stupid comment'.
- borez, on 07/02/2008, -10/+3"....zero punctuation must be:
1. must be really stupid"
Yes, I'm sure it is must be must be really stupid
must be- NathanielJ, on 07/02/2008, -3/+8Don't you feel like a jackass for mocking someone for screwing up English, when you yourself put an extra "is" in your sentence?
- borez, on 07/02/2008, -6/+3At Nathaniel, no I didn't, read it again.
- HyperJack, on 07/02/2008, -5/+2No. See, you did what i call butchering a sentence.
You cut it up, quoting what you felt like, and the result was a confusing sentence that beared no resemblance to the original meaning.
You used an ellipsis to cut out the part that gave the sentence ts original meaning.
This is what it should have been:
"comments about zero punctuation must be:
1. must be really stupid"
That means the COMMENTS about Zero Punctuation are really stupid,
not Zero Punctuation itself as you tried to imply.
/rant that no-one gives a ***** about. - borez, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Good lord.
- elnerdo, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3To provide some rationality to this:
Borez, you're still a jackass for pointing out a really small error.
NathanielJ, you're just wrong.
HyperJack, you didn't understand what borez was trying to point out. - borez, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2@elnerdo. You're right. Now I'm off to finish my steak and chips.
;0) - NathanielJ, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I've re-read it a dozen times now probably. Will someone please point out to me how borez's "is" has any place whatsoever in that sentence? If you take out the extra "must be", then the sentence becomes "Yes, I'm sure it is must be really stupid."
Seriously, how is there *not* an extra "is" in there? - elnerdo, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Sigh.
NathanielJ, I'll add some quotation marks to help you out:
Yes, I'm sure it is "must be must be really stupid"
Or I'll add some more nouns
Yes, I'm sure it (, the phrase) is (meant to be) "must be must be really stupid"
Now does it make sense? - NathanielJ, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1OK, then change my complaint to "learn to use quotation marks to make your damn sentences readable"; same point. Either way, his comment makes no sense as written, and he's making fun of someone else for using poor English.
Do you see the irony?
PS. Just for the record, I think his comment got even stupider if it's meant to be taken the way you wrote it. It makes much more sense just as "Yes, I'm sure it must be must be really stupid."
- mbraynard, on 07/02/2008, -0/+7Gosh I hope he does review other media formats.
BTW - this wasn't a commentary on web comics. It was a FUNNY mocking rant. Emphasis on FUNNY. Like what web comics were suppose to be. - Gutterpunk, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Here is a wild idea : Go comment on the ZP forums. They usually spawn great discussions (except when Yatzee is bad mouthing anything by Nintendo)
Oh and btw, if you don't like a movie, you can watch another one. If you don't like a video game, you can play another one. If you don't like a book, you can read another one. Should we take down the whole review business down because you said so?- CyberSol, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2actually, i was talking about people going to sites, not what Yahtzee reviews... ah forget it.
- FoxOrian, on 07/02/2008, -2/+5I kinda ragged on Yahtzee last week for his videos becoming a bit stale for me, but I have to admit he won me over a bit today by reviewing something that wasn't a hyped up game. I don't read CAD so I'm indifferent to his opinions on it, so it was actually an enjoyable watch. I'd hope he starts reviewing other forms of media based on todays video.
Also, is he talking WAY slower than usual or is it just me?- boobsbr, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1Yahtzee's best work to date still is Angular Mike. his games are nice too, but his comments on ZP are getting tired.
- FFXIfrohike, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1Dugg down for meta-commenting. Not allowed!
- MrFisty, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Don't forget number 5. Quoting a line from the video we all just watched. Reminds me of the time I saw Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure as a kid then spent the rest of the day saying "Totally excellent" and "Radical".

- iankino, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Well, though he hit CAD the hardest, he poked his fun at Penny Arcade, xkcd, 8-Bit Theater, and others. Unless the wiping his ass on sprites comment was targeting another comic.

- iankino, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Well, though he hit CAD the hardest, he poked his fun at Penny Arcade, xkcd, 8-Bit Theater, and others. Unless the wiping his ass on sprites comment was targeting another comic.
- Aharoni, on 07/02/2008, -7/+96Zero Punctuation: Webcomics? sounds more like Zero Punctuation: CAD?
Miscarriage, too much text, the comic maker acting like an ass...- BlackJackJester, on 07/02/2008, -9/+2It's really not a super great one, but he sold me with this one:
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20040 ...- InfinitySnatch, on 07/02/2008, -1/+11Me too. I love how he uses the exact same template for the blue guy in every panel. That's real ingenuity.

- mllawso, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Good lord; I actually thought you were Tim Buckley for a moment.
I also had a strong urge to call you an unfunny, egotistical, pretentious ass.
/I don't know if those two things are related. - nugz85, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0good lord it really is him, look at his profile, he made a name just to refute this ZP post. tim buckley is more of a loser than i ever thought possible...
- BlackJackJester, on 07/02/2008, -9/+2It's really not a super great one, but he sold me with this one:
- DarkShroud, on 07/02/2008, -24/+66For some reason I still read Ctrl+Alt+Del casually but somehow it's actually managed to go downhill.
Still this was a good one. http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20070 ...- navster15, on 07/02/2008, -16/+56Penny Arcade did it better:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/09/14/- FuzzyBunny, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13Which one is actually funnier is a matter of taste, but if you're trying to imply that CAD copied PA in this case you need to check the dates. They're both 9/14/07 and seeing as how PA doesn't usually post their comics until sometime mid-morning and CAD always has theirs up in the early morning it just doesn't hold water.
- FFXIfrohike, on 07/02/2008, -9/+2It's a "matter of taste" if by that you mean that those who laugh at the ctrl-alt-del comic don't have any. Seriously, anyone who laughs at that would laugh at anything.
- dudefaceguyman, on 07/02/2008, -2/+11Personally? I liked CAD's version a lot more. Which means something as usually PA is pure gold with every strip they do. That one was rather sub par for them.
- Thorlord, on 07/02/2008, -1/+9i also casually read CAD, i was amazing to start with. but the author seems to want to try to become a writer for Desperate House Wives or something.
personally, with those two PA and CAD comics about Halo energy drink, CAD's was funnier in my opinion, normally i prefer PA to Cad, but in that strip CAD goes the extra mile and brings it to new context rather than just make what a ***** commercial for the product would look like. also, ironically, CAD did more art work then PA which is surprising when you look at them, all 3 frames in PA had just MC and a few other minor edits, while the 4 frames in CAD were different.
CAD can get back in my bookmarks of web comics if he goes back to the pure-gaming comics, miscarriage is a serious issue, but i read web comics to enjoy myself, not to think "*****, miscarriages suck." - zombird, on 07/02/2008, -1/+13I'd say they both suck.
- WraTH017, on 07/02/2008, -8/+6PA is terrible. You have to read their damn blog to make sense of their stuff, and even after you do it's still not funny. I doubt anybody really laughs (or at least chuckles) at their stuff more than once every 80 comics, and to those who do, I sincerely question their intelligence.
Sure, they're successful, but so was (is?) Rob Leifield. They still suck.
- mbraynard, on 07/02/2008, -4/+35No, no it's not.
And to quote Jerry Seinfeld, profanity is a 'short cut' in humor. - Kohaxx, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6I actually like his "Penny Arcade clone" strips where he rants on or parodies an aspect of gaming, his "storyline" and characters are incredibly stale and any "plot" he has going has giant text balloons in an attempt to inject humor into boring situations.
The reality is his characters are one-note stereotypes (Crazy guy, everyday guy, gamer woman, meatbag hating robot), and he's run out of room to do anything remotely interesting with them.- NuclearFriend, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I totally agree, anything Tim writes relating to games is fine but his characters storylines that don't relate to games are a joke. I don't know who he is trying to appeal to with them but it isn't gamers.

- willy1234x1, on 07/02/2008, -5/+41XKCD isn't a gaming comic dumbass.
- Jesse, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1It still suffers from the same general fallacies ZP pointed out. But it's all a matter of preference: I like webcomics that are either well drawn, written well, or (in a perfect world) both. You prefer the exact opposite of the "both", which is why you like XKCD.
- luet, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1It doesn't suffer from those at all! Do you even read xkcd?
- WhereAmI, on 07/02/2008, -1/+21"A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language."
- mbraynard, on 07/02/2008, -4/+31Other than bad illustration, XKCD avoids ALL of the conventions that Y is ridiculing.
- TheVigilante, on 07/02/2008, -28/+34Ctrl+Alt+Del is the worst thing to happen to webcomics... Or is that VGCats? I'm not sure anymore...
- XenoSNK, on 07/02/2008, -7/+15Video games were the worst thing to happen to webcomics.
- Kypt, on 07/02/2008, -12/+21How dare you?! VGCats (when updated regularly) was amazing. For some reason I loved the guy's twisted sense of humor.

- bluetytanium, on 07/02/2008, -14/+35***** YOU VGCATS IS AWESOME
- Dantetheinferno, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3VGcats would be funny if he ever updated.
- InfinitySnatch, on 07/02/2008, -7/+6Can't it be both?
Wait, I'm sorry, nothing is ***** like CAD is *****. - Radan, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7Webcomics in general are declining in quality at a rapid phase if you ask me. VGCats had its prime time, but it is practically dead now. Ctrl+Alt+Del is just trash and Apple Geeks has for a while now taken itself way too serious for its own good.
Right now, the only webcomics I still read part from Penny Arcade are http://www.explosm.net and http://www.wulffmorgenthaler.com
Completely random and ***** up comics can never go wrong.- elambing, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1im still into pvp as well
- EdwinJ85, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2But I like VG cats?
It's just a shame he only updates once a year now. - Ablue, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1agreed.
my regular viewing has been narrowed to pvp, whiteninja, pennyarcade, userfriendly. (userfriendly replaced cad when it started getting REALLY crap) - ParticleMan420, on 07/03/2008, -6/+2XKCDLMNOP or whatever is the worst comic ever.
its not really a videogame comic, but it doesnt matter since it's not ANY kind of comic.
"comic" implies that it might be funny
- gr33nie, on 07/02/2008, -4/+147I can see why The Escapist feels the need to put adverts for their other shows on the end of Yahtzee, becasue if they didn't nobody would watch them. Ever.
- mbraynard, on 07/02/2008, -0/+19Yeah; you can't help but think that Yahtz was pointing his cannon a little at them.
- ozkr, on 07/02/2008, -0/+29The worst part of adding those ***** ads for ***** shows at the end of the video is the fact that they kinda fool you into believing the actual Yahtzee video is like 7 minutes long.
- Archaic1, on 07/02/2008, -0/+10I fast forwarded through them too, therefore making me an illicit bandwidth stealer. That's right, lock me up and throw away the key.
- socketman, on 07/02/2008, -1/+39The drawn by pain thing at the end looks retarded.
- fotbr, on 07/02/2008, -0/+13Don't you mean "pants on head retarded" ?
- Fordi, on 07/02/2008, -4/+1It's actually pretty good. Though, I wish they'd finish the last damned episode. It's been *months* now.
- btschul, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2The chick walking through the tunnel at 5:30 in the video has some nice ***** though
- jcasaurus, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1You mean you people actually watch what is after the animation?
- xsidekick409, on 07/02/2008, -7/+27At first I thought he was going to rag on penny-arcade, and I was going to have to completely disagree.
Penny-arcade's formula works because they have a great writer and a great artist, and they've been doing it forever.- daschupa, on 07/02/2008, -0/+9I think they are immune particularly since they are the nearest progenitors of these types of web comics, before the onslaught of copycats.
- NuclearFriend, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4Although the "Paint the Line" series at the moment is sucking total balls. Can't believe there is going to be like 4 more of them.
- crossmr, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Its an utter waste.
- Phoetality, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I actually disagree. Their story arc's are always bizarre, but you'll always remember them. Remember the wandering CTS ones?
- xsidekick409, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Are you serious? When did you grow up? Did you somehow miss the movies they are emulating? You need to go and watch some cool runnings or something.
- crossmr, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Its an utter waste.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 07/02/2008, -14/+4Everytime I see Ctrl+Alt+Del I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twice so I can restart and not view that garbage.
- GeorgeStone2, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1Either people don't remember
- btschul, on 07/02/2008, -8/+19I'd rather have a ***** television shoved up my ass than watch an episode of that "Unforgotten Realms" piece of ***** that they were advertising at the end of the episode. At first I was like "what the hell is this", then someone said something about dual wielding nunchuck Abraham Lincoln and I was like "Oh Jezus someone ***** kill me this is the nerdiest, stupidest thing I have seen in years" Zero Punctuation is the only thing that keeps the Escapist afloat. Everything else is a load of ***** and chips.
- protogenxl, on 07/02/2008, -3/+3Settle down Beavis
"Unforgotten Realms" like Summoner Geeks ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=zng5kRle4FA ) has it's high points.- btschul, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3I guess you have to be a nerd that plays dungeons and dragons or some ***** to get this.
- Gutterpunk, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Amen to that!
The sad thing is that Yatzee sometime put extra stuff at the end, and it's usually very funny, but they completely ruined that now. - Falsey, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Did you just say "Jezus"?
- btschul, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Yeah, sort of like Mr. Slave. "Oh, Jezus"
- Pinmonkey555, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3You say its the nerdiest stupidest thing ever yet you have that avatar. I must ask are you on drugs? I can't say anything for the new stuff but the original episodes of Unforgotten Realms were great and certainly better than any CAD comic.
- btschul, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1are you trying to say mst3k is nerdy?
- Pinmonkey555, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Oh of course it is, but that doesn't mean its at all bad in fact its probably my favorite show. My point is just because its nerdy doesn't mean its bad.
- btschul, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1This is SO nerdy that it is unwatchable. The nerdyness is so thick you could cut it with a lightsaber. There is good nerdy like the original star wars trilogy (and I guess you could argue mst3k) and there is bad nerdy, this being a prime example. ( this is all based on the ad I saw, I have not gone back and watched old episodes because I am scared to.)
- btschul, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1For anyone looking at the comment history in my profile, the comment below this one is not pertaining to the zero punctuation video, but to the video advertised at the end of the zero punctuation video. zero punctuation ***** rocks
- protogenxl, on 07/02/2008, -3/+3Settle down Beavis
- FLYBOY611, on 07/02/2008, -8/+3Honestly the only reason I read some webcomics is because its a decent way to kill time and avoid doing work. CAD used to be good a few years back but I think Buckley jumped the shark with the whole pregnancy story arc.
Its still a better way to kill time then.....oh I don't know....Gaia Online? Habbo Hotel?- InfinitySnatch, on 07/02/2008, -4/+3CAD was never good. DOhoohohoho.
- Kenzan, on 07/02/2008, -16/+9THANK YOU YAHTZEE.
Sorry folks, but Penny Arcade sucks, has always sucked, and it's high time someone tells the Emperor he has no clothes.- Balanced, on 07/02/2008, -2/+12Actually, if you pay attention he seems to kind of like Penny Arcade. At the least, he gives them credit for being the original in a sea of clones.
- bluetytanium, on 07/02/2008, -3/+2False.
- spidoman, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5You do realize he wasn't really ripping on penny arcade, right?
He's saying they came up with the stereotypical webcomic, and all the other sights are just doing the same thing.- Kenzan, on 07/02/2008, -4/+4Doesn't matter. Penny Arcade just isn't funny.
- Kenzan, on 07/02/2008, -4/+4Doesn't matter. Penny Arcade just isn't funny.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 07/02/2008, -3/+5Penny Arcade is actually pretty good overall.
- Kenzan, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1As compared to what? Shoving a needle in your eye?
It's Hyped up Hackery at best. - jetfuel, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Shut up Tim.
- Demener, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Digg fight!
*insert arm flail slapping at each other while looking away from each other here* - RobotLeAwesome, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1hmm, I don't know – they manage to get a lol out of me in maybe 1 out 4 comics, which is way more than most others. The only competitor I can think of as far as lol level goes would be XKCD maybe, VGCats will randomly have a gem, CAD sucks, PSTP sucks, DA sucks...
- Kenzan, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1As compared to what? Shoving a needle in your eye?
- CrushThemTorg, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2God, and thank you, Kenzan. It's unpopular, but I agree. Penny Arcade is unfunny, overwrought crap. I've got to applaud their charity work, though.
- Phoetality, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I don't think he's slagging off PA. I think he's slagging off the PA clones.
- BradOFarrell, on 07/02/2008, -1/+10He forgot to mention anthropomorphized consumer electronics.
- kinseyincanada, on 07/02/2008, -2/+113so its safe to assume that he doesnt like CAD
- wolferz, on 07/02/2008, -17/+8You know for once I think Yahtzee has completely missed the mark. And he's right the level of hypocrisy here is almost 100%.
If you don't like CAD... cool. Whatever. It's your choice to like or dislike something. The problem I see here is people trying to tell some one else how to run their web comic and getting pissed when he doesn't. Get over yourselves.- GeorgeStone2, on 07/02/2008, -2/+4WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Did you know Tim B actually sent a picture to a 16 year old girl with her name above his penis.
Then when everyone found out he banned them all from the forum and deleted the entire sub section "Rantings of a mad man" iirc.
Basically he is a little baby. - klarthlester, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Hm. Well, for what it's worth, you have a point.
However, it seems like you're being a bit hypocritical, yourself.
Earlier you posted:
"...
In the end whether you like the rout it has taken or not is completely a matter of preference... nothing more. Yet people are sitting around talking about how it is ruined and how it was stupid. [...] it's about people thinking that their opinion on some one else' work is should have more of an impact than the opinion of the creator. That's a level of arrogance that just doesn't sit well with me. I fall into the hardcore reasonable people that don't get mad at some one for not doing things my way category."
(Sorry about cutting parts out. It's not to twist your words, but to draw attention to something. The entire post is still up, after all, so it's not like I can slander you.)
Basically, you are getting mad at the people who are mad at Buckley what he did, for what they did (complaining about it). Nobody really expects any change to result from all the posts on this matter. But expecting people to just sit down and shut up about it is contrary what is supposed to be good about the Internet: free speech. You defend the artist's right to throw his readers a curveball, whatever his motivation, but you would deny everyone else the right to critcize that decision.
Of course, I would be hypocrtical as well if I said youdidn't have the right to publicly take issue against the criticizm, and I'm not going to do that.
Preaching Over IP gets old. To paraphrase House (and allow you to label me a fanboy of British curmudgeons, which is entirely true), people don't change. The Internet should be about everyone saying their piece, and listening to everyone else's. You could say I am being hyopcritical again because I seem to be suggesting that you were preaching and need to stop. I guess the difference is in intent. I just want everyone to be able to have a voice, and be able to use it freely. That, at least, should be everyone's right. I think it can be accomplished without infringing too far upon anyone else's rights. I'm just saying, its no good foaming at the mouth to try to change people's minds. It will never work, just because this is the internet.
