The idea was to make the Soviets afraid of Reagan as somebody who might actually push the button. It makes sense; Reagan was a broadcaster for a long time, so he knew about the danger of open mics.

        They are results-oriented, and speak for people that have *absolutely zero* real voice in our society. They use the carrot and stick method -- they maintain excellent ongoing relationships with people in power behind the scenes, but can also mobilize their community for action if need be.

        You just see the sticks. What you don't see are the negotiations and the access they provide to people in power, access that the people they're helping would get no other way because of, yes, racism, but also lack of money or under-education.

        They may not have made all their calls right over the years, but lets face it, police and public officials have their own fine history of taking advantage of the underclass when it serves their interests. The Jacksons and Sharptons of the world are the people who not only got sick of it, but also decided to do something about it. More than a lot of us can say. More than I can, anyway.

      and most microphones are muted at the board, not at the mic, meaning that if its hooked up, it can be recorded with minimal effort, even if the monitors and speakers aren't broadcasting...
