      In the recent story posted to Digg about the rice shortage in America, as I read the article, something struck me as very telling. The central piece of the article talked about how rice is being rationed in the United States. But then, the article goes on to say that Walmart is one of the places doing the rationing. And what was their limit? It was "four 20 Lb. bags of rice per household". Think about that for a minute folks... What kind of household do you have if you go through 80 Lbs of rice even in a year? My family and I eat plenty of rice. Pretty much at every dinner during the week. We're a family of three. One five pound bag of rice lasts about three months. So, at most, we would use MAYBE 30-40 Lbs of rice a year.

      This just tells me that Americans have been conditioned to buy for quantity instead of quality. And THAT requires a stupidity beyond belief. THOSE are the fans of Bill O'Reilly. The people who've been conditioned to buy without thinking. The people who believe that by buying low quality in high volume, indiscriminately and think they're getting "deals" are the people who believe in Bill-O's lies about "looking out for you". He's looking out for those fans alright. He hoping to keep them stupid so that his stocks stay artificially inflated. That should keep him in loofas and falfels for life...

Even I am screwing people over by having to have a retirement account or buying things at Target when nothing else will do. I can't escape that unless I want to live like the Unibomber, which I don't.

            But, the way that success is defined in this country, I would have to do a LOT more screwing over to "make it". Personally, I define success as staying alive and keeping your family alive. I also define it as finding ways to be happy with less, since I OPT not to do things I find morally reprehensible: ie. being opportunistic.

But I'll happily admit that I'm not a genius or any better than most people. I'm just a regular guy from the poverty class who moved up to middle class thanks to the sacrifices of my parents. I can't embrace the middle class way of life because it's too callous and coldhearted in my opinion. Not enough thinking about others, and too much focus on self-interest. But the ignorance you speak has has no class limits. It affects all humans.
