"I Didn't Realize that When You Shoot Somebody, They Die"
abcnews.go.com — It was Feb. 19, 1997. Twelve-gauge shotgun to his shoulder, Ramsey, then 16, traveled the halls and scared his classmates as random shots filled the air. When it was over, when the police had Ramsey arrested, and a basketball star and the school principal lay dead. Ramsey "I honestly believed that if you shoot somebody, that they would get back up"

Funny? - Armando57, on 06/13/2008, -1/+4(Blowing whistle) Okay, you, out of the gene pool. A defense this lame deserves the death penalty and whatever lawyer filed it needs to be disbarred. We might even want to look at any news reporter who gives this punk ANY credibility. He deserves nothing less than punchline status and maybe poster boy nomination for abortion advertisements.
- daRoach, on 06/13/2008, -0/+12Seriously, I hold people like Jack Thompson responsible. He is putting the idea into these kids minds the blame for their actions can be shifted to video games or other media.

"I could and might believe him"
I never said i did believe him.- Evie1851, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4You mean you think he may have some very real kind of mental illness that would have prevented him from understanding right from wrong, reality from fiction? That sort of thing?
I do usually like to play devil's advocate just to stir things up ( which you have already done so I won't lol) but I have to say, if that were a possibility, don't you think it would have come up and been looked in to? And let's say it DID come up and was looked in to, he is in jail. They obviously believed he's a lying sack of crap and there is nothing chemically wrong with him that would excuse this behavior. - mal1964, on 06/13/2008, -2/+1"You mean you think he may have some very real kind of mental illness that would have prevented him from understanding right from wrong, reality from fiction? That sort of thing?"
No I have no nothing because i don't know anything about the case, And this story doesn't give me anything for me to make a fair judgment.
"If I knew more about the case I could and might believe him"
How could anyone kill him from this story? - Evie1851, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1"No I have no nothing because i don't know anything about the case"
"How could anyone kill him from this story?" - mal1964, on 06/13/2008, -1/+1@evie
I believe what i know, Not what someone tells me. He might be a cold-hearted killer but this story doesn't tell me that . - Evie1851, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Ok mal. I really don't know what you're trying to say.
The story is exactly that. He is a killer. He killed people. Surely you aren't implying that he DIDN'T kill these people?....You ask us what makes it so easy to believe he is a killer? What makes you think he ISN'T? His oh so sad face?
you said "And this story doesn't give me anything for me to make a fair judgment."
See above. - pyro789x, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1So what you're saying is that you believe in guilty until proven innocent?
- mal1964, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1@evie, This is my original comment and what I'm saying is for me to believe him I'd need more info, that's all.
"If I knew more about the case I could and might believe him"
- Evie1851, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4You mean you think he may have some very real kind of mental illness that would have prevented him from understanding right from wrong, reality from fiction? That sort of thing?
- 471776, on 06/12/2008, -10/+49I think we just need to educate him - the prison sentence is wasteful and pointless.
Here's an idea: lets shoot him with a shotgun a few times and leave him bleeding for a while. This will allow him to experience first hand the dangers of such weapons, and afterwards I'm sure he'll no longer be inclined to shoot people. Plus, he can stop wasting taxpayer money with his useless, wasteful existence, and maybe even give a little back to the community by fertilizing some trees or something.- mal1964, on 06/12/2008, -14/+3He was 16 years old. Kill him is your answer?
- 471776, on 06/12/2008, -3/+27Yes. For two reasons:
1) It's a fair punishment for the crime. At that age, you should know that guns kill people. Nobody is stupid enough to not realize this, and if they are, they shouldn't be loose in society.
2) He's gonna spend his life in prison anyway. You could even argue that a death sentence is more merciful than lifetime imprisonment. For the remainder of his life (probably quite a while), he'll just use up tax dollars and contribute absolutely nothing to anyone. He might be paroled after 2066, by which time he'll be so completely insane that he'd be a bigger threat than when he was sentenced. - Snoosy, on 06/12/2008, -2/+6100% agreed. Sometimes the "eye for an eye" philosophy seems like the best.
- Dajhan, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Agree
- mntbikeracer1, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4I damn well knew guns killed people at age 16. Lets stop wasting money having these people sit in prison and disallow repetitive appeals to the death penalty in cases as cut and dry as this and get rid of the ***** that is populating the human gene pool.
- mal1964, on 06/13/2008, -2/+2@mntbike
You do know juries make mistakes right? - Armando57, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2Yes, kill this punk before he starts breeding. We need to give assholes the message that lame defenses like this are *****. They only make it more difficult for people who might actually be innocent to get a fair trial.
- 471776, on 06/12/2008, -3/+27Yes. For two reasons:
- mikedoth, on 06/12/2008, -2/+2I think he kind of self taught himself. He just needs to be behind bars so he doesn't do it again and claim stupidity.

- mal1964, on 06/12/2008, -14/+3He was 16 years old. Kill him is your answer?
- Tyrghast, on 06/12/2008, -10/+4You can't deny the long term effect of genetic weeding (through sterilization or death sentence): If done correctly, in about 40 years (it will probably take closer to 80 years to see the full effects, but 40 is enough to start seeing a difference in the curve) we'll see a reduction of crime and a society with much less animosity towards one another. In any case, I really don't feel all that great about my tax dollars going to feed, clothe and house idiots like this.
- nathanww, on 06/13/2008, -3/+2Instead your tax dollars we be going towards caring for all the people who have horrible genetic diseases.
- bitcloud, on 06/13/2008, -0/+2Mein Kamf much?
sounds good... maybe if we're lucky the person who implements will write social darwinists like you out of the gene pool....
- nathanww, on 06/12/2008, -12/+3He could be telling the truth. If I walked up to an average person, pointed to a random part of their body, and asked them what would happen to them if they got shot there, most people wouldn't have a clue, other than that they would be seriously injured. Nor would most of them be able to realistically estimate their chances of dying. In the absence of that sort of information, it's very easy to adopt the book/game/movie version, where in most cases the effects of injury are dramatically under-represented.
- mntbikeracer1, on 06/13/2008, -0/+4If you shoot my arm I bleed from my arm... Insert any body part. People know guns kill you cannot justify his stance.
- mal1964, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Most diggers in here are killing him with the title of the story.
- holymrack, on 06/13/2008, -0/+3I don't even care if he said it, or actually thought that. The reporter had no business using that as the title for this article.
I almost would applaud whoever wrote it, the article is great and focuses on the real causes for these kinds of things. But instead they chose some sensationalist title that has nothing to do with the rest of the story. - vstro24, on 06/13/2008, -0/+3Looks like he tryed to pull a dave chappelle. lol :D

- *jooloop*, on 06/12/2008, -0/+9That, and it says that his friends told him "Make sure you shoot these people..." Wouldn't that make you realize that it would get rid of those people?

I think the first comment (at ABC.com) I read said it best:
"I honestly don't believe a single word he saying, I knew him when he was a kid. Where did he get something like.....I didn't know when you shoot something it dies, I mean, come on he grew up here in Bethel where residents go out hunting for food for their families. There is no excuse for what he did, He knew exactly what he was doing that morning, he had his hit list in his pocket, and headed for his targets. For him to say his friends made him do it, after all these years? He didn't even have a tear in his eye when he first went to court, didn't even say a word. Everybody gets bullied, but they are "responsible" for their own actions." - Dajhan, on 06/13/2008, -3/+2I understand your concern and I agree with it.Just the word...
"Everybody gets bullied..."
Have you been bullied everyday you come to your school, or at home? I agree that everybody should be responsible enough for their actions, specially 16. But those who bullied others must realize, also what's the effect of what their doin'.
Like if even if its you and me, you'll hear me, saying bad things to you everyday, and hurt you emotionally and/or physically everyday. What would you do to me?

- 471776, on 06/12/2008, -0/+13You'd have to be straight-up retarded to fall for that excuse. Even if he's telling the truth, he's too dangerous to be released into society.
- Taquoshi, on 06/12/2008, -0/+5And what kind of clever defense would his victims give, "We were just doing our jobs?" or "I was just finishing up some paperwork, when WHAM!"
Unfortunately, unlike the shooter, the victims didn't get a defense lawyer, a trial by jury and they won't get a chance before the parole board nor do they get time off for good behavior. They won't get a chance to do an interview with the media nor did they have a chance to talk to their families and friends.
Wonder how he's adjusted to prison life and if he likes the food?? Wonder if he thought about that before he pulled the trigger, or did he think he'd be dead, along with his victims?

- blindmonkey, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3Even though I agree with that statement for a case like this one, but if the kid is just ***** up, and the parents couldn't have done anything about it, it would be a different story then.
- insomniac8400, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1I think the rule of thumb could easily be something like if they live under your roof, you are responsible.
- aaron552, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Interesting idea...
The people responsible for a minor are charged with the minor...
If it was made into a law (which it won't be), it might even make parents pay closer attention to what their kids are doing and saying.- insomniac8400, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Imagine having the parent charged just like the sicko when their kid goes online looking for older people to have sex with. The second that happens, parents won't be letting their kids talk to random people online.
- Lunarbunny, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1I don't think this is the right way to approach this though. I mean how would this be any different than regulating the sale of video games? Perhaps an aggressive ad campaign would be the more...dare I say it, American way of doing this.
I do however agree this is just some Jack Thompson-esque scare article though. I think that anybody with half a goddamn brain knows what the hell a gun does.

- franklymister, on 06/12/2008, -30/+41And this is why EDUCATION is a better idea than so-called "gun control."
If gun safety classes had been required in his school, much like driver's education or sex education is offered, he could have grown up understanding and respecting the power of firearms.
Guns, cars, and sex are all wonderful things that can kill you if you aren't responsible. We should be educating kids about all of them.- monkeyangst, on 06/12/2008, -0/+42Oh, come on. Lack of education was NOT this kid's problem. Do you actually believe him when he says that, at the age of 16, he didn't know that guns killed people? He was SIXTEEN. He is not retarded. He knew exactly what he was doing, and now he's trying to deflect blame.
- IllBeBack, on 06/12/2008, -1/+28Come on. You're not actually falling for his statement that he DID NOT KNOW that the people would die if he shot them?

Life is not all conspiracy. It's stupid people as well - SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/12/2008, -0/+6He's probably just as dishonest with himself about it as he is with everyone else.
- jp12380, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Gutterpunk, I realize that someone putting him up to saying this is not the only feasible scenario.
You have to wonder if there are people that can pull strings to get him more privileges in prison, possibly get his sentence shortened that are apart of the anti video game campaign if he comes out and spews this drivel.
Or if like speedsteamboat said, he probably is saying this to make himself feel better, I know if I was living with guilt for doing something it would ease my guilt to think I did it out of ignorance vs out of malice.
Either way, I hope we don't hear any of the media idiots spinning this story to be anti video game.

- stix213, on 06/12/2008, -9/+3ehhh, FYI - Trailer trash "idiots" know how to use guns and that people don't get back up.... Its the city living people who usually have never fired one in their life, never taught their children how to respect the power of a gun, and have children that see one and assume it is a toy and blow their heads of by accident.
- mattlohkamp, on 06/12/2008, -2/+5what? what are you talking about? are you even a real person? repeat after me - "stereotypes are NOT reality."
- stix213, on 06/13/2008, -1/+1You are 100% wrong. First of all, all stereotypes actually do have a basis in reality, otherwise they wouldn't have formed in the first place. Most white men actually can't dance well. Black men actually in general are better at sports. A blond cheerleader has never won a Nobel prize in the math or science categories, and likely never will. Ohhh no, are those true stereotypes????
I work in the city, but live near the country. I've only met a single person at my work in the city who has even fired a gun out of the hundreds here. And every person I have spoken to here about teaching their children about guns always looks at me crazy, and tells me they simply don't want to expose their kids to guns at all and don't have any interest in teaching their kids how to handle or respect a gun (which if you remember growing up, kids are usually interested in all the stuff their parents didn't want to tell them about).
My point here is that if you don't teach your kids how to respect guns, instead of just ignoring them, then they simply will not respect guns.... plain and simple. Which of course leads to 10 year olds blowing their heads off because they didn't understand what they were doing when they go to their friend's uncle's house and find a gun. Happens all the freaking time - most stories about a kid blowing their own head off happens just like this.
Almost every person I know who lives in the country has fired a gun, and many own them. Most of them with kids teach them how to fire guns and how they need to be respected. Other than the possibility of a hunting accident, you don't see THESE kids accidentally blowing their heads off while starring down the barrel of a gun they found, because they understand the weight of what they are doing even at 10 years old.
If you don't teach your kids how to handle a gun and respect it, if they find one they will learn on their own the hard way... and often it is their final lesson
Digg me down you ignorant moron.... I am actually speaking from experience. - mattlohkamp, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1I wish you could appreciate the irony of you calling me ignorant. I'm sure you've got fistfuls of anecdotal evidence - so do I. Everybody knows people who fit the stereotype - and for each person that fits, there's someone else who breaks it: My cousins his crowd of friends all live in the middle of the city, and they're crazy about guns; I know nearly a dozen people off the top of my head who live in small towns or out in the country and wouldn't be at all interested in even holding a gun.
Obviously people should be taught to properly handle firearms, there's no reason they shouldn't, that point isn't even being debated. The point is, it doesn't take experience with guns to realize that they kill people - all it takes is intelligence. And intelligence has nothing to do with your race, after-school hobbies, or where you live. Separating people in to two groups - 'country kids who are dumb but know how to use guns' and 'city kids who know nothing about guns except what they know from video games' - creates a false dichotomy, and it's divisive. Think before you say stuff like that.
- stix213, on 06/13/2008, -1/+1You are 100% wrong. First of all, all stereotypes actually do have a basis in reality, otherwise they wouldn't have formed in the first place. - Gutterpunk, on 06/13/2008, -1/+1He can, but asking him to go on the road and wreck his car at 100 mphs to prove that he is one (like the OP did) is ridiculous.
30 Diggs for such a ridiculous argument is wrong - stix213, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Gutterpunk, Hetman was just making the point that this kid says he saw in video games that shooting people doesn't kill them.... you would also see that smashing a car at 100 mph doesn't kill people also in the same games....
It is illogical for the kid to assume that guns don't kill people, because video games told him, but that smashing a car at 100 mph does kill people, even though the same game says otherwise.
