US officials think Kim Jong Il may be ill
ap.google.com — Western officials say there are signs that North Korea's unpredictable dictator may be gravely ill, after the man North Koreans call the "Dear Leader" apparently failed to show up at an important national celebration Tuesday.

- Bovorik, on 09/10/2008, -1/+1If someone starts shooting (say, a rogue DPRK unit on the DMZ) it certainly could.
- kingfelix, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1An armed confrontation would precipitate the downfall of North Korea. It would be ugly, but for a very short while. After that the destitute people of North Korea would begin to have a chance at the real life they have been robbed of for the last 50 years.

- GammaStream, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1The sad thing is that even if this is true and he does drop dead, it probably isn't going to have much effect on the country. Even thought he has no nature heir, it is still going to be a isolationist police state, it would just be ruled probably by a group of high ranking officials. Similar to Zimbabwe, the people aren't going to rise up and overthrow the government.
- MiNGLED, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1Quite right, things could go worse for the North Koreans as the various factions fight for who is going to lead. The country hasn't got much going for it at the moment but at least it's stable, once Kim Jong Il is officially dead, the whole place could destabilise.

- ufia, on 09/10/2008, -4/+4Out of curiosity, I listened to recordings of the Voice of Korea radio broadcasts in English on YouTube, and what striked me is the very great similitude with Ron Paul posts here on Digg. Always addressing him as the 'Dear Leader', and worshiping everything he does as the next big leap for mankind. Ron Paul has the same policies as Kim Jong II, scary!
- sentinel106, on 09/10/2008, -1/+1It's not that their policies are they same, it's just that they're both fairly sensationalist and have a way of speaking that gets inside the heads of the masses.
