Woman Rescued After 2 Days; Stuck Under Car Looking For Keys
aol.com.au — "A 91-year-old woman who had crawled under her car to look for her keys ended up stuck beneath an axle for two days until her mail carrier noticed letters piling up, police said. Firefighters lifted the car with a jack and removed Betty Borowski, who was dehydrated and confused. It turned out her keys were in the car door." Poor thing.

- BCKids1208, on 07/06/2008, -6/+47Christ, I bet she'd feel foolish if she realized what happened.
Now I feel terrible, I'm officially making fun of a grandma.- ReidFleming, on 07/07/2008, -1/+67It's OK. Humor can be helpful. I have sadly lost people close to me from both cancer and Alzheimer's and this is still funny:
- Doctor: "I'm afraid I have bad news. You have cancer and you have Alzheimer's."
- Man: "Oh, that's awful. Well. At least I don't have cancer."- EIderofzion, on 07/07/2008, -5/+3HA HA HA!
- PatoLucas, on 07/07/2008, -0/+14"Son: what's the name of that german gentleman who drives me crazy?"
"Alzheimer, grandma, Alzheimer"
- IglooBurner, on 07/07/2008, -2/+22She shouldn't even be allowed to drive.
- subliminalurge, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Hell, I could chug a case of beer and still be a better driver than some of these old farts I see driving around, yet we do nothing to get them off of the road.
The PC movement is alive and well.
- subliminalurge, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Hell, I could chug a case of beer and still be a better driver than some of these old farts I see driving around, yet we do nothing to get them off of the road.
- humptyz, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3Don't worry, you're not the only one laughing.
- mike17032, on 07/07/2008, -8/+2Dont feel bad, old people are ***** useless.
I remember reading a story about how two old bats lock themselves IN their car. Thats right, in. And they let the ***** drive?- dynelol, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Old people are far from useless. I do think that after 65 you should have to show you can drive every 5 years or after any major accident or surgery.
- ReidFleming, on 07/07/2008, -1/+67It's OK. Humor can be helpful. I have sadly lost people close to me from both cancer and Alzheimer's and this is still funny:
- djcreamy, on 07/06/2008, -28/+7Euthanasia doesn't sound so bad in this case (hell, in any case)...
- zippy757, on 07/07/2008, -2/+2Do you really mean that you would kill this person DJCREAMY ?
- dynelol, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Then you won't wind when we euthanize you, djcreampie.
- maxyRO, on 07/06/2008, -2/+126So she's driving at 91...
- Spuy767, on 07/07/2008, -1/+38Yeah, but nobody will get in the car with her. On a more serious note. . . Working at a Buick dealership for 4 years was quite enough to show me why at probably the age of 70, people should be required to pass a basic driving aptitude test.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 07/07/2008, -3/+57People are missing the real story here. For two entire days the streets were safe. Then that mailman had to go and ruin everything. /joke in terrible taste
- ismellfunny, on 07/07/2008, -0/+10When I'm old I'm going to be blasting N.W.A or Dr. Dre or some ***** while im speeding saying "***** the police". I don't like that stuff I just want to scare the younger generation so they realize why the world is the way it is
- kelmaster1, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2It's still pretty damn good that she was able to get on the ground and crawl underneath her car. Also, the fact that she anticipated getting back up is pretty remarkable at 91.
Getting old sucks... - Sheff, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3In all fairness, she may be 91, but she's got the body of an 80 year old.
- dynelol, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1So you'd hit it?
- calon9, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1She should not be driving if the bluriness of the image is an emulation of her visual acuity.
- Kylde, on 07/06/2008, -1/+187and they let this woman DRIVE!!!???
- BaoUnit, on 07/07/2008, -2/+17They let women drive
- djlethal, on 07/07/2008, -3/+3haha it reminds me of the south park episode
- megamod, on 07/07/2008, -1/+8just keep this in mind: "It turned out her keys were in the car door."
What else can old people get confused about?
Thinking that their foot is on the brakes when it's actually on the accelerator when they're going to the post office. How many times have you heard that story?- bweltondav, on 07/07/2008, -0/+8I've seen it happen. A woman (looking 80) was approaching a stop sign, then suddenly rocketed forward, through the intersection, slamming into the side of an expedition. I stopped and checked on the drivers--the SUV driver was alright, but the old woman was covered in blood and confused. An ambulance eventually took her but she seemed like she'd be alright. It just goes to show that when people reach a certain age, they become responsible for putting up the keys and learning to adjust.
I've heard the "wrong pedal" story from other sources, regarding other incidents, as well. It's a problem I guess. - mike17032, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6Some old ***** did that to the video store I worked at. Caved in the side of the building, and almost killed the clerk inside.
- LeeSoong, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1If you don't like how grandma drives,
stay off the sidewalks !

- virginian9000, on 07/06/2008, -2/+69Poor thing.
But really, perhaps she doesn't need to be driving if this happened. - cledford, on 07/06/2008, -4/+64Looks like LifeAlert found a new spokes person.
- amanilaenvelope, on 07/06/2008, -2/+22Help! I've gotten stuck and can't get out!
- ravensfh, on 07/07/2008, -1/+7She could not reach the phone~!!
- mike17032, on 07/07/2008, -1/+8Thats why they have an old person necklace with a "help me I am a dumb *****" button.
- Sheff, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3The LifeAlert people knock on the door and her drunk son answers and says, "Yeah, she's over there, under the car."
- akimie, on 07/06/2008, -14/+1Grandma..oh..grandma..poor thing but sometime we should think and seat at her shoes maybe we can get the answer why she do that..
- babychen, on 07/06/2008, -7/+12That would never happen in a country with a large population density, trust me, I live in one! But then here 90-year olds wouldn't get to drive cars...
- bentrinh, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Unless you live in LA. Then people will start taking whatever they can get their hands on.

- jayrok, on 07/07/2008, -3/+87How many letters pile up in 2 days?
- Spuy767, on 07/07/2008, -1/+19Well, if the woman has checked her mail every day for the last 15 years, (pure speculation there), then the letter carrier would probably notice that she hadn't checked the mail for two days.
- jayrok, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5I still doubt the quantity was enough to be considered a "pile"... then again, half of it was probably Publisher's Clearing House envelopes.
- Spuy767, on 07/07/2008, -0/+13That, and ***** junk mail from the scooter store.
- jonshipman, on 07/07/2008, -0/+9Well she might already be a winner...
- CedEx, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3I remember receiving one of those letters before. Inside it said I had a 50% chance of winning as my name and another secret contestant were drawn for the jackpot.
Well, as it turned out, another guy in my class at the time also received a letter. And guess what, he too was drawn for the jackpot along with another secret contestant.
Naturally we assumed it was each other and made a pact to split the winnings. Obviously that Publisher's Clearing House letter was a scam, since neither of us won, and the entire letter was a lie, covered up with fine print exclusions.

Will she see the next kid crossing the street?
I say take the license and vehicle away.....- dynelol, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Take the license and give the vehicle to a relative.
- wedges, on 07/07/2008, -15/+3this kind of makes me wonder... Soylent Green could be the answer to the global food crisis.
- zippy757, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2and if this was your parent do you have the same idea ?
- rohcky, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3Yes.
- wedges, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1well seeing as how my mother told me she never wanted me, yes. i don't like kids or old people.
- zippy757, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2and if this was your parent do you have the same idea ?
- TheBadWolf, on 07/07/2008, -5/+20How the hell do you notice letters piling up after two days?
- CosmicJustice, on 07/07/2008, -0/+11Probably because she always takes her mail in and one day she didn't, and he knows she's 90 years old so he was smart enough to put 2 and 2 together.
- KMyHero, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2How do you not notice the same comment three posts above yours?
- hftz, on 07/07/2008, -12/+9I'm sorry, but isn't this just a prime example of modern conveniences outweighing survival of the fittest? Obviously she should be in a assisted living facility, because god only knows how you crawl under your car "looking for keys" and come out "dehydrated and confused" (especially when they were in the car door to begin with).
I cant imagine suffering from dementia, and the woman has probably spent enough time on earth to warrant a helping hand. If she was thirty, however, I might think that we were better off just leaving her under there.- rayraym0fucka, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I don't know why you'd get dugg down. You're making a completely valid point. Someone should have her in a home where she can't hurt herself.
- Wartz, on 07/07/2008, -1/+4What if she doesn't want to be living in a "home" when she has a perfectly good home of her own? Those "homes" are often terrible places.
- s0nicfreak, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3@Wartz
Then I say she is free to put herself in danger but at the very least her ability to hurt other people should be taken away and she should not be driving.
- rayraym0fucka, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I don't know why you'd get dugg down. You're making a completely valid point. Someone should have her in a home where she can't hurt herself.

- Aldhelm, on 07/07/2008, -2/+8Me and another pedestrian crossing a Zebra cross were nearly killed by an old couple who were driving. This may not be nice or PC but people shouldn't be allowed to drive over a certain age. This women should be banned. Sorry but try public transport. Criminals won't attack you if there are others in there.
- GlitchEnzo, on 07/07/2008, -0/+9I don't think they should be prohibited from driving after a certain age, but I do think they should be tested yearly after a certain age. Let those who are capable of driving continue to do so.
- Rawclyce, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1More than yearly.

- RonaldLovegood, on 07/07/2008, -1/+7I have to wonder if she has any family, and why isn't she in a geriatric or has someone assisting her - family or a nurse.
It's not a matter of disrespect to an elder, people just don't reach 91 and are able to do everything themselves as if they were in their 30's. Especially driving.
I hope her family or the authorities help her make her life easier by placing an assistant at her home.- MalDON, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3It's a matter of money. Perhaps her family doesn't have the money to hire a nurse or put her in a care home. There is only so much you can do for people.
Then again, this is America and I bet her children are doing very well and will never know this happened.

- kamiten, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6You know, I used to come to digg to get interesting or weird news articles that the normal media didn't pick up on yet, or never would. Often times cnn or any other "major" news outlet might pick up on these stories a day or two after I had read them on digg.
These days it's like reading the front page of a newspaper a day late. This story was on CNN yesterday. - MalDON, on 07/07/2008, -3/+10Just to piss on the AP, here's the full article:
A 91-year-old woman who had crawled under her car to look for her keys ended up stuck beneath an axle for two days until her mail carrier noticed letters piling up, police said.
Betty Borowski, of the Milwaukee suburb of Greendale, was found Tuesday and remained in a hospital in critical intensive care Friday, her niece Nancy DiMarco said. The hospital would not give an update on her condition Saturday.
Borowski, who lives alone, became stuck June 29 while looking for her keys; her head apparently got pinned by the axle, Greendale Police Chief Rob Dams said.
"She was pretty well wedged in there," Dams said. "It looks like she crawled under headfirst."
Borowski's mail carrier noticed Tuesday that the previous day's mail was still in her mailbox, police said. He rang the doorbell and then asked a neighbor whether he had seen Borowski lately. He hadn't, so they called police.
Firefighters lifted the car with a jack and removed Borowski, who was dehydrated and confused.
It turned out her keys were in the car door.
Borowski appears to be recovering, DiMarco said, but may have suffered a minor heart attack while under the vehicle.
"If it wasn't for people seeing a situation and following through ... who knows?" she said. "She wouldn't have made it about one more day." - MendotaLee, on 07/07/2008, -15/+6I sure am glad we are 10 trillion in debt keeping these ***** fossils alive. Thanks, Medicare, wish I knew that you'll be there for me.
- HOGBALLS, on 07/07/2008, -5/+8It appears you're a DUMBASS WASTE OF SKIN refering to the elderly as a fossil. It is sad to get old and incompetent but, I hope that a senior citizen knows who you are and beats the ***** out of you with a walking device!!!!!
- homah, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5Yes, medicare is precisely the reason we are 10 trillion in debt. Let's spend, spend, spend on wars and get rid of medicare.
- Wartz, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3You're welcome to get yourself off welfare to help reduce the debt.

Grandma acknowledges the mighty Zep.- secrity, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Being stuck under a car for a couple of days would make many people dehydrated and confused. That was a good catch by the postman.
- skektek, on 07/07/2008, -8/+3*Almost* a Darwin Award candidate (I think she could have won).
- kamiten, on 07/07/2008, -4/+5Well you have to do something dumb that removes you from the gene pool to win a darwin award. Being that she's 91 she has already long ago been removed from the gene pool and is thus inelligible.
- CosmicJustice, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2Uh... no, she probably has kids, grand kids and great grand kids. She's in the gene pool to stay.
- homah, on 07/07/2008, -4/+3Logged in just to dig down your piece of ***** post.
- dynelol, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1homah, nobody gives a ***** that you buried him or why. We all just think you take the internet too seriously and that you're stupid for going out of your way to do an insignificant bury.
- kamiten, on 07/07/2008, -4/+5Well you have to do something dumb that removes you from the gene pool to win a darwin award. Being that she's 91 she has already long ago been removed from the gene pool and is thus inelligible.
- caroline494, on 07/07/2008, -3/+0So she is still driving at 91. And she is still able to bend down to look under her car for her keys. But she got stuck for 2 days. Seriously, is this just a case of 'I've fallen and can't get up'? Maybe she should have a medic alert system AND turn in her license.
- lineweight, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4This is what we all have to look forward to.
- dynelol, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Not true. Some of us get shot.
- tk0680, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3Good lord, I'm glad she's alright but I can't think of much stronger evidence for her never driving again.
- PhillyMJS, on 07/07/2008, -3/+4Great, she lived... so now she can go on to confuse the brake and gas pedals someday, and plow into some pedestrians... maybe even T-bone a school bus. How will you like having that on your conscience, mister good samaritan?
Hopefully someone will realize that this woman has probably reached a point where she shouldn't be driving anymore. - dynelol, on 07/07/2008, -2/+2I thought it was The Onion.
