Woman changes name to a URL to protest dissections
welt.de — A 19-year-old Virginia woman has adopted a most unusual method of protest--by changing her name to a website address protesting animal dissection for scientific purposes. Her friends and family still call her Jennifer, however.

still I guess I give her credit for trying...- kevlar21, on 10/15/2008, -2/+73No. You can give her credit for trying, but fortunately it won't make any difference. Dissection is an important part of education as well as scientific and medical research. Even excluding this, PETA doesn't deserve any more attention than it gets already.
- rzellers, on 10/16/2008, -1/+11Dissection is a very important part of science education and it pisses me off that PETA supporters don't recognize this. PETA is literally propaganda, with statements such as "What do dissections teach? Not much … except that it’s OK to chop up animals." It is wrong to dump money into advertisement campaigns where their target audience young kids (petakids.com) and then swaying their opinion by talking about violence, potentially scarring them for life.
from http://www.petakids.com/disindex.html - bodisatvah, on 10/16/2008, -0/+6Almost every bit of media you're exposed to is propaganda of one sort of another.
- jamesdew, on 10/16/2008, -1/+1Do American kids really cut up a live frog in class? Why not just kill it first? What possible benefit could come from cutting up the frog while it is alive?

- feoren, on 10/15/2008, -4/+63Hopefully it WON'T make a difference. Her cause is ***** retarded. Let's protest everything that's icky, despite the fact that it allows for huge medical advances that save countless human lives at virtually no cost whatsoever. But it's so gross! ***** this bitch. It's just like PETA to prefer animals getting proper burials over humans getting good medical treatment. Until those ***** get cancer.
- Claverhouse, on 10/16/2008, -31/+4***** off, you despicable little bastard.
- Nitesmoke, on 10/16/2008, -2/+10PETA kills way more animals each year than all the high schools put together.
- bugsy187, on 10/16/2008, -19/+3Is it fashionable to make fun of PETA? Why should we care what you have to say if it amounts to immature name calling and low blows?
If you disagree with PETA, fine. Leave it at that or at least make a real argument. It's pretty obvious their intentions are honorable even if you disagree with their methods. Why do you need to get so riled up and paint this unrealistic caricature of them? - Eaststand, on 10/16/2008, -3/+6there intentions are not honourable, they are idiots, and this "unrealistic" caricature is anything but. Its all very well liking animals, but seeing them as people as they seem to think they are, is moronic. Animals are our food or whatever we choose to do with them, like teaching kids.

Hope you never need your appendix taken out or any other type of surgery.
In fact, just abandon physical examinations altogether.
That crazy loon needs to be left alone. - annapanties, on 10/16/2008, -8/+4Uhhh, last time I checked, she's protesting dissection in middle and high school. Not university, med school, nor for scientific/medical research !!
My junior high school had a computer program that simulated dissections, and IMO that is totally sufficient and less smelly.
The difference between a bunch of eighth graders dissecting a frog and a bunch of med students dissecting a cadaver is like night and day.....- Rivetgeek, on 10/16/2008, -0/+5I dunno, they both still play catch with body parts.
- Mononuclear, on 10/16/2008, -0/+6Her site does have a place on it for university so she is protesting that as well.
- sadhesati, on 10/16/2008, -1/+5Nothing is going to substitute actually dissecting an animal and seeing its anatomy right in front of you. How are you going to know what it looks like IRL, as well as the variations (not every animal looks the same - you need to be able to differentiate body parts even when they don't look exactly like your textbook says it does)? How is a high school going to give its students interested in the medical field or biology an edge if they don't even give them the opportunity to dissect something?
- minoss, on 10/16/2008, -1/+7I want to see her refuse all surgery for the rest of her life. Or any other medical advancement that dissection has helped bring forth.
- kevlar21, on 10/15/2008, -2/+73No. You can give her credit for trying, but fortunately it won't make any difference. Dissection is an important part of education as well as scientific and medical research. Even excluding this, PETA doesn't deserve any more attention than it gets already.

- mavranos, on 10/16/2008, -1/+5Idiotic! Honestly I can't even begin to address how stupid that is. If all the assholes worrying about animal rights would spend half their time on human rights the world might be a better place. PETA makes me want to murder my pets and I likemy pets.
- Claverhouse, on 10/16/2008, -2/+2Why are human rights more important than animal's rights ( if one even believes in 'rights' ) ? Humans like yourself merely encumber the earth and make it worse. At least animals in nature live properly.
- mavranos, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4Well Claverhouse, we are able to reason. That makes us better than animals. They are here for us to use as we see fit. Do you think civilization would be where it is today without the use (exploitation) of animals? And left to their own devices animals do NOT live "properly". They eat each other and stuff.
- askantik, on 10/16/2008, -1/+3Disclaimer: PETA is *****. This person in the article is *****. Many animal rights advocates seek only attention for themselves. On to my comment:
So I am better than an infant? I am better than a mentally handicapped person? They cannot reason, and I can. Therefore, I have a greater right to life than them. That is correct, by your logic.
The ability to reason is not a gradient with which to determine worth. I know that you think you're the first to think that humans are better than animals, but it has long been addressed. Look up Jeremy Bentham or Peter Singer.
Furthermore, there is a large difference between exploitation of animals for subsistence (when it is necessary for survival) than for pleasure. We no longer need animals to survive (indeed, I'm not even arguing that we ever truly depended on animals... gorillas eat 98% plant material... however, one could argue environment, etc, but that is another story). Rather, we exploit them and knowingly cause pain and suffering unnecessarily-- almost as if we couldn't reason. And finally, one could obviously presume that if we cared for other animals, we would also have a greater affection for our brothers and sisters. Naturally, I am not saying that we should put animals above humans-- simply saying that just because they are not humans does not make them worthless and expendable resources.
People always point out that a lion takes a gazelle and cares not for the gazelle. Well, besides the lion's biological requirements that differ from ours, the lion, by your own logic, cannot reason.
However, I will disagree with Claverhouse's "Animals live in nature properly." All of this is pre-defined by arbitrary principles. There is no right or wrong way to live in nature. Similarly, there are not pre-defined values for what organisms are more important than others. In the end, we must each give sufficient, in-depth thought to both our philosophies and our subsequent actions and then go from there.
I could discuss this all day, but it's a bit futile since people see only the PETA nutjobs and then do not give people who try to act intelligently a fair chance. - Eaststand, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2coz humans have reasoning powers, animals are... well, food.
- Claverhouse, on 10/16/2008, -2/+2Why are human rights more important than animal's rights ( if one even believes in 'rights' ) ? Humans like yourself merely encumber the earth and make it worse. At least animals in nature live properly.
- danthepiercer, on 10/16/2008, -1/+27dear dissection.com,

- passedoutghost, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3She'd have to be....
- ThatGeek, on 10/16/2008, -2/+4stupid bitch... has she ever done a dissection.
I learned more about the human body from dissections than i could have ever from a stupid simulation or text book - BossKey, on 10/16/2008, -1/+5We should take bets on which year she switches her legal name back. Is she really going to put up with this when she's 37 and on to other things in life?
- CertifiedBaller, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3stupid....
- theryanocerous, on 10/16/2008, -2/+11PETA members are crazy... I don't know this girl but I'm fairly confident shes a mentally handicapped attention whore...
- jedimasta, on 10/16/2008, -1/+7PETA = Money grubbing front.
This is a perfect example of a young mind being twisted by manipulative lobbyists. Someone ought to tell her about the giant freezer PETA keeps on their property. They aren't storing ice cream sandwiches, that's for sure. - LukeFranklin, on 10/16/2008, -2/+3Well that was dumb, Animal dissection! What a stupid thing to protest about.
- halloweenkat, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Are there volunteers that want to change their last name to digg.com?

- hmunkey, on 10/16/2008, -1/+16Um, dissections of animals for scientific purposes is not a bad thing. Science is the future, like it or not.
And this is coming from a vegetarian.- askantik, on 10/16/2008, -5/+5Yeah, but you forget that dissection of animals, particularly in *****' middle school, is far from scientific. It's ***** dweebs poking scalpels at dead animals and going, "Ewww!!!"
Anyhow, as a vegan, animal dissection is *****. But PETA is even *****. - dellegazze, on 10/16/2008, -2/+3I agree to the above comment. I'm a vegetarian, and i found dissecting frogs completely pointless in bio. Other people have already dissected frogs - I'm fairly certain the knowledge that is to be gained has already been documented.
Also, ***** PETA. - CandystripeLegs, on 10/16/2008, -2/+2Agree with above two posts. It has its place in science but not when you're a teenager who just wants to see what the insides of a rat's testicle looks like.
My roommate is a biology major and wanted to be a researcher but she changed her mind, apparently its very common for mice and rats to be very maltreated in labs :( She didn't give me specifics because she knew it would upset me, but man if you're gonna subject an animal to tests and dissections treat them with respect.
