I think that probably has something to do with it. Additionally, they aren't competing for resources so there's no need to kill or devour one another.

Initially, when the cat is young, the dogs take care of him by scaring away other cats that try to attack him. Then, when the cat has grown, the cat "defends" the dogs of larger cats... :)

      Also, I have seen grown up cats and dogs just to sit around and share the food from the same bowl!

It's kinda cute, my dog (she's a mini dachshund) puts on an extravagant display of power whenever she sees my cat, while my cat just sits there staring at her with a "wtf" look. My dog often tries to chase my cat, but for fun... sometimes she gets close and sniffs her but that's it. One time, she went up to my cat (who was curled up in a corner resting) and their noses touched... awwwww
