Actually, as noted in the comments, the pics all came from an expired site, fishinghighway.com, which had a FAQ on how they did it. Click the FAQ link at the very top to view the FAQ. http://web.archive.org/web/20060529015518/http://w ...
- ishboo, on 01/03/2008, -5/+9I've thought about doing that so many times, it would be a bitch to set up though. How about a never ending hamster tube, then you could race them, imagine balls of fur running though a tube over your computer every couple minutes, maybe you could even get the Doppler effect!
- Navicerts, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2that would be easier than the fish tube I imagine. Good idea.
- EmperorAwesome, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Yeah, till they chew through and start the rebellion.
- Navicerts, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2that would be easier than the fish tube I imagine. Good idea.
- tssfan1, on 01/03/2008, -19/+5For anyone who does not want to feel stupid and ask how the water says in the pipes when they are above the tanks...
They are all sealed- dswoap, on 01/03/2008, -3/+9Well don't you feel stupid, because that's not at all how it works. Fill a sink with water, submerge a glass in the water, invert it, and pull it up out of the water slowly...and notice how the water doesn't fall out of the glass until the rim breaks the surface. Same concept.
- carbonetc, on 01/03/2008, -2/+9It's almost as if the glass is "sealed" in a way until the rim breaks the surface.
- greenlight2001, on 01/03/2008, -2/+1Fill up both tanks. Now cover the both ends of the pipe. Fill it with water (there will be some sort of area at the top of the pipe where the vacuum will form, water goes in here). Submerge both ends of the pipe into its respective tank. Remove the covers on the ends of the pipe. A vacuum will form at location previously described as the water initially tries to flow both direction into the tanks.. Unless air has some way of getting into the system (remove pipe ends from tank, crack froms in the pipe, fish fart a lot in the pipe) the water will stay put as there is nothing to replace the lost water (hence a vacuum forms). The down side of all this? The water in the pipe stays stagnant. Doesn't flow.
- greenlight2001, on 01/03/2008, -5/+1Of course, all this is dependent on the water in the two fish tanks being of equal amounts.
- george@CASE, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2it doesn't have to be of equal amounts. The tanks just have to be around the same height because the water will seek its own level.
- mal1964, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2 a dive bar where i live has a simple setup and it has two 50 gal tanks and the tube is 6 in round and a total length of 8 ft . and the fish go from one to the other.

tank tank
- davidrools, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1the pipes do need to be sealed, but not the tanks
- Betrayer, on 01/03/2008, -6/+1 a vacume to suck the air out at the highest point would work as long as you keep filling the tanks.
like a straw - greenlight2001, on 01/03/2008, -0/+9Your explanation sucks.
- Navicerts, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1That would only work if the surface tension in the fish tanks is less than the pressure from the water in the tube. However, it looks like there would be a greater volume in the tube than in the tanks, which would cause it to over flow. I think there is another explanation, or my guess that the volume in the tube is greater than the volume in the tanks could be wrong.
- Otto, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2If the tube is sealed entirely, then the water can't fall out the bottom because it's pulling a vacuum at the top most point of the tube. The volume of water difference shouldn't matter.
Imagine a simple U shaped tube running between two close by tanks. If the tube was full of water, with no air in it, then the only way the water could come out would be if there was something else replacing it. Since the tanks are on the same level of height and have the same air pressure on them, you also can't get a siphon effect.
Now, in practice, such a setup would be difficult to maintain. Something as small as colder air in one part of the room could cause the water levels to shift and potentially overflow. It'd be much simpler to seal the tanks and leave the top of the tube unsealed.- davidrools, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1easier to fill but much harder to clean.
- Otto, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2If the tube is sealed entirely, then the water can't fall out the bottom because it's pulling a vacuum at the top most point of the tube. The volume of water difference shouldn't matter.
- joeyjesus, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4The comments on the bottom of that page are funny. About half the people get it and the other half, well maybe they thought it was magic (or non-stop pumps pumping the water to the top of the tubes)
- dswoap, on 01/03/2008, -3/+9Well don't you feel stupid, because that's not at all how it works. Fill a sink with water, submerge a glass in the water, invert it, and pull it up out of the water slowly...and notice how the water doesn't fall out of the glass until the rim breaks the surface. Same concept.
- Dolomite, on 01/03/2008, -23/+2Photoshopped? Doesn't seem likely water can defy gravity like this. I'm just saying...
- ishboo, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1Read the comments, it's simple physics the two tanks act as balanced weights they each have the same pressure and unless something of a different pressure gets into the system theres no way for the water to escape
- weezcnr, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4lol dude it's just like submerging a glass underwater and flipping it over, when you pull it up the water stays in the cup till the very brink. The water won't flow back into the tank unless there is something to replace it and because it is a perfect seal no air can get in to do that.
- dswoap, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2See my comment above, the water isn't defying anything.
- nesibus, on 01/03/2008, -1/+10I think your brain is photoshopped.

- amarketingman, on 01/03/2008, -3/+4that's awsome, but what happens when you need to take a fish out, I can barely catch my fish in my little fish tank, these fish have a hell of a lot more room to run too.

- Betrayer, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1a chimney sweep type tool made of cloth on a drill would work.
- lust, on 01/03/2008, -3/+2Not really...12 men and woman would wear special water suit, like what Big Daddy has in Bio shock give then a sponge and vacuum then you miniaturize them and insert them in a special slot of the tank.
- Betrayer, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1a chimney sweep type tool made of cloth on a drill would work.

- matthewdestroys, on 01/03/2008, -15/+6sooo old. on here months ago.
- thesonofdarwin, on 01/03/2008, -3/+1Hope it wasn't branded as something new then either, because this particular setup is many years old. Hell I saw it when I first got into the hobby 8 (9?) years ago and I recall it was an old concept then too.
- leetninja, on 01/03/2008, -11/+3only the 7th time on the digg front page ...
try getting something new and/or original and then come back later ...- Nick22, on 01/03/2008, -3/+4might be old to you but its obviously still new to others seeing as its getting dugg. If you think its a duplicate from a while ago, bury it as such and quit your bitching.

- isuknow, on 01/03/2008, -3/+0is it me or is the 2nd pic the fish is staring at you
- lust, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3Dude its the Mary Jane you've been smoking.
- Stanly22, on 01/03/2008, -3/+6Not photoshopped - when you put your finger at the top of a straw and pull the straw out of your drink, the liquid stays in. As long as you don't take your finger off, or let air leak in, the liquid will not fall out. Simple physics. This is done the same way. Although I have no idea how the got the water in the pipes to start off with.
- djpants428, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6If you just started pumping the air out from the top while continuing to fill the tanks, the water will be drawn up the tubes to replace the air.
- drimo, on 01/03/2008, -2/+5Seems neat, but anyone serious about fishkeeping would realize this would be a maintenance nightmare. Even with a watertight seal enabling the water to be contained within the pipeline, a water change or break in the seal could siphon water into the other tank.
- Torx, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9i hope he has waterproof floors
- algo, on 01/03/2008, -2/+10i liked this submission more where there were no comments.
- lucutus, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3I made something similar years ago with clear pipe and acrylic. It was cool for a while to have a fish habitrail between 5 20 gallon tanks. Then came the troubles of cleaning. If you only had one level it wouldn't be to bad. Mine was five levels so there was no cleaning one tank at a time. It got to be more trouble than it was worth quickly.
- Angelix, on 01/03/2008, -5/+2I noticed that some pipelines are vertical. Can fish swim upwards like a helicopter? I know birds can't fly vertically upwards.
- melonhedd, on 01/03/2008, -0/+17Helicopters can't swim.
- blantonator, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2umm, what? fish are much different than a birds. All the fish needs to do is point his body upwards and and swim. As long as he is appropriately buoyant, he should swim very easily, in any direction.
- george@CASE, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2of course they can, but not like a helicopter. more like a rocket.
- Tyrghast, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4dugg for "rocket fish"
- bkeller81, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4can anyone identify the fish? A couple of the pictures look like convict cichlids, but i'm not sure about the others.
- Undyingmortal, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3They look like mostly convict cichlids. The orangy yellow one looks also like a cichlid. The long skinny one is a needlenose gar. Very cool fish.
- giveer, on 01/03/2008, -11/+2Okay, I don't mind things hitting the front page a bunch of times because there's always someone who hasn't seen it - but how many f*cking times is this going to be on the front f*cking page? Are we keeping it here until every last person on the planet has seen it?? Geez - go send a useless email forward or something.
- typographics, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1what are you people talking about? i check the front page multiple times a day, and this is the first time I have seen it.

- jimbobaii, on 01/03/2008, -0/+12Christ, how many more times will people ask how many more times an article must get to the front page?
I for one, liked the impractical yet pretty tanks and will digg them each time. Meh. - metalgod79, on 01/03/2008, -10/+5Hi my name is __________ and this is my first day on the internet.
- chief100, on 01/03/2008, -2/+0Anyone got a mirror for the websense'd
- BLKMGK, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Had a tank with tubes between it and another. One problem I had was that fish wouldn't go through it - they would see though the acrylic and see the water level - they refused to go through that "barrier". I finally masked that line and then they began to use it some. MUCH smaller than this but still pretty cool. You can buy acrylic tanks with tubes connecting below water level - they too look pretty nice.
- Tyrghast, on 01/03/2008, -6/+1this so dumb imagine how hard it is to clean
- thesonofdarwin, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Sounds like your experience with aquariums is limited to the 15gal starter sets available at Wal-Mart? With proper water flow and good wet/dry filter it would require little work. One might be more concerned with their choice of some of the more aggressive cichlids, but with the space I doubt there'd be much problem.
- shaelen, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4Cool. I've thought about doing this many times, but I've never seen it done before. Thanks Internet!
- IpwnZnoobs, on 01/03/2008, -2/+11thats not something you could do if u lived with your girlfriend. because its way to awesome for them to understand
- Cyborg326, on 01/03/2008, -3/+1I had a dream once that I did this, I've never thought someone would actually do it for real though. This is pretty cool.
- DigKitty, on 01/03/2008, -12/+2That's awesome. It's like those tube maze things kids build for hamsters or whatever.
Yeah, I agree, my frist thought was that it must be a PAIN to clean this thing,ha,ha.

we need a top 10 digg reposts of all time! - iblaine, on 01/03/2008, -3/+2Very cool. Get a leak in one of the tubes and you're screwed. Were this a saltwater tank I would be impressed.

- aldableep3, on 01/03/2008, -4/+2how does the water stay up in the pipe without falling into the tank? is the water constantly pumped into the pipeline?
- salinemist, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4Wow, looks like a bitch to clean.
Wait, someone already said that? Damn. - WickedEEE, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Plecos, an army of plecos could keep the glass clean. You'd need some other scavengers in there to clean out the floaters. It looks cool, but far more trouble than it's worth.
- brubakerj, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Where is this?
- nbx909, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2hrm, unless he is useing some pumps or something to fill the pipeline, it would have to be a perfect seal, which brings up the question, how does he feed them?
- Tollboi, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1actually the tops of the tanks do not need to be sealed. as long is there is no air getting in the tube and it does not come above the surface of the tank water will stay in it. It is same concept ass using a drinking straw, or when you submerge a glass and turn iit upside down under water and left it out the water remains in the glass until the rim breaks the surface.
- LeeSoong, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Now, that's got Moxie !
- KiltedMile, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Saw this on cable TV, the guy uses a magnet on the outside to drag a mop-looking scrubber with a metal core to clean the tubes. Pretty cool!
- tasharoo, on 01/04/2008, -1/+0lol why would u build a tube fish tank?
- gcodori, on 01/04/2008, -0/+0For those who speak English - I thought I would translate the submission.
Before: Fish tanks connected with pipes, fishes can travel between two aquarium and to feel more freedom than usually.
After: These fish tanks are connected with pipes. Fish can travel between two aquariums and the fish have more freedom than usual.
Seriously...FISHES? Puh-leeze.- stotty, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Actually, fishes is perfectly acceptable as a plural. See http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fishes.
And you're welcome.- gcodori, on 01/07/2008, -1/+0Actually, you list a link to the dictionary reference to "crawfish" not "fishes". You see, crawfish ends in "fish" but is not the word "fishes". Never rely on search engines without proofing the results first.
"FISHES" is a real word but very old usage (think biblical usage) and has mostly been stamped out (with the exception of dim-witted Internet users). Some dictionaries may give "fishes" as an alternate plural form for "fish," but that is only because many dictionaries are too wussy to differentiate between an evolving language phenomenon and a commonly made mistake.
You, sir, fail at life.
Lesson over...You're welcome.- standinntherain, on 01/16/2008, -0/+0Actually...Fish is used either as singular noun or to describe a group of specimens from a single species. Fishes describes a group containing more than one species.
- gcodori, on 01/07/2008, -1/+0Actually, you list a link to the dictionary reference to "crawfish" not "fishes". You see, crawfish ends in "fish" but is not the word "fishes". Never rely on search engines without proofing the results first.
