Chronotron: time-traveling puzzle game
kongregate.com — Mitch Hedberg's time machine might only go forward at regular speed, but the one here allows you to go back in time to interact with versions of yourself to solve some pretty mind-bending puzzles.

- digg it
- grexy, on 05/07/2008, -8/+23Clever mechanic, quite innovative.
- cannonball, on 05/07/2008, -1/+6I just like playing with myself.
- je12u, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5The game description is not without its charm either:
"It’s about a robot that goes back in time for some reason. (His best friend is a talking pie!) "
- stoppard, on 05/07/2008, -5/+10Now I'm not gonna get any work done tomorrow. Interesting mechanic though, it is refreshing to see innovative web games.
- kovac9478, on 05/07/2008, -10/+1its a trap!
- RealmDown, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2it WAS a trap!
- xTRUMANx, on 05/07/2008, -4/+12I wish there was a save feature. If I knew how many levels there were, I may be inclined to complete the game but now I'm tired of using my brain.
- GregLoire, on 05/07/2008, -1/+10It saves automatically. You can resume your game from the level select later.
- elliott9, on 05/13/2008, -0/+130 levels i believe
- markizzo, on 05/07/2008, -7/+12Good graphics but they stole the concept from this game
http://www.kongregate.com/games/piratejuice/timebo ...- GregLoire, on 05/07/2008, -1/+6The concept of time-traveling puzzles hasn't been new since Blix (maybe even earlier?), but I still think it's done pretty well here.
- rufusdog, on 05/07/2008, -4/+1I really enjoy playing the timebot v1.1 game. Chronotron is a slick copy, but just a copy nonetheless... I gave it one star.
- daizaru, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Stole, Borrowed, reinvented, enhanced. It's all the same really. It is a well designed game nonetheless. What makes this one better is you have to rely on all versions making it back in one piece which gets complicated.
- behemothing, on 05/07/2008, -2/+7oh mitch.
- rolandvvv, on 05/07/2008, -2/+73One time, this guy handed me a picture of him, he said,"Here's a picture of me when I was younger." Every picture of you is when you were younger. "Here's a picture of me when I'm older." "You son-of-a-bitch! How'd you pull that off? Lemme see that camera!" - MH, rip
- goliathlyricist, on 05/07/2008, -2/+43I only dugg this for mentioning Mitch Hedberg. Yes, I actually logged in to my otherwise dormant digg account.
RIP Mitch.- blurrie, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2me too.
"he's a ***** bully man" - bam359, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3***** the purple people!
- blurrie, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2me too.
- goscript, on 05/07/2008, -10/+0are we going to see miniclip here too?
- cynic573, on 05/07/2008, -1/+34http://www.nekogames.jp/mt/2008/01/cursor10.html
Cursor*10's successor?- iamthejeff, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4this is the first instance of a game like this that I've seen. Don't know which came first.
- SSCrow, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Cursor came first.
- iamthejeff, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4this is the first instance of a game like this that I've seen. Don't know which came first.
- chrissku, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3Level 3 just f'd up my head real good.
- UncleHenry, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Level three? I got to level nine. So ***** confused. Anyone figure that one out?
- there4iam, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Solution: Get the block, lift the block over your head underneath the chip, wait a sec, then jump (while holding the block). Then get to the switch and enter the elevator. With the next guy, wait for the original to lift the block, get on top of it, then jump off the block after the original jumps.
- Phyraxus, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Level 18 is a bitch because you touch a floor and it vanishes and doesn't come back, you have to time travel about four times given switches you must press and travel over it eight times total. It can be done, but I don't think i want to spend 15+ mins on one level.
- DrJack, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2you have to keep retracing your steps in synchrony with past selves to not run out of spaces to jump on. it's my favorite level so far.
- UncleHenry, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Level three? I got to level nine. So ***** confused. Anyone figure that one out?
- Chalks777, on 05/07/2008, -2/+19I'm glad to see Kongregate.com making it to the front page. It feels a lot classier to me than addictinggames.com and the like.
- Atomic1fire, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Since its more of a community then a game site...
- Shadowgamers, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3If this has the same level of mind-***** as Timesplitters 3, I'll hit it.
- Ramble, on 05/07/2008, -1/+21Time pod looks suspiciously like a tardis.
- zepfan221, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Plus when you crouch you look like a Dalek!
- oneoverzero, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I agree.
I feel like it's missing the sound effect.
- Pillage, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4R.I.P. Mitch
- galvo, on 05/07/2008, -7/+1What a waste of time.
- fr3ddie, on 05/07/2008, -4/+4level 6, then got bored :/
- asus2000, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1Same.
- D14BL0, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/kayak.png
- Raptor007, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5I thought it said Chronojohn at first...
http://cache.kotaku.com/assets/resources/2007/04/D ...- lolinyerface, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Woot! I popped in just to make that comment!
- brianpeiris, on 05/07/2008, -2/+6Brilliant, this comes close to what Richard Dawkins has said in the past: What effect would it have on children if they played computer games where all the laws of quantum mechanics were in play (i.e. Photons going through two slits simultaneously, etc.).
Also, the Doctor would be proud. Now that I think of it, I'm surprised that the Doctor Who franchise hasn't already tried this!- darzeecompany, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4"Also, the Doctor would be proud."
Would he? I seem to recall him saying that crossing into established events was strictly forbidden, except for cheap tricks. - Nescirian, on 05/08/2008, -0/+0It's also strikingly close to what Richard Dawkins has said in the future.
- darzeecompany, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4"Also, the Doctor would be proud."
- Raptor007, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2PARADOX!
How did I manage that when they pass right through eachother?- DrNafork, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Your second bot put your first bot next to a wall.
Your first bot try to move through a wall (he is stupid) so he don't change his X position normally so he don't use the time capsule at the right position.
- DrNafork, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Your second bot put your first bot next to a wall.
- TheRealJMX, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Chronotron Science...... we do what we must, because we can......
- stephbeaudet, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2the PARADOX is a lie!
- rootneg2, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Will somebody *please* make a portal mod that uses time-travelling?
You could "timestamp" the portals so that entering the portal on one side spits you back out the other side at the same time that you opened it previously. Or maybe it would use the difference between the timestamps of either end to determine how far back to send you. It would be pretty sweet to watch all your "previous" selves running around and "setting up" for your run through the level, and it would add an interesting "timed" element to the whole game. I bet GladOS (I'm *sure* she made backups...) would certainly have some interesting things to say about temporal paradoxes and the like.
Either way, it would make a helluva sequel...
- tzilla12, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4its not desktop tower defense but im still not going to get anything done today.
- culbeda, on 05/07/2008, -0/+13I may need the Harlem Globetrotters to help with this one...
- oxilite, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0They just held a press conference to announce that i was a jive sucka
- jackmaht, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1***** the robots, i just want to see some mitch hedburg
- micahbell, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1It is a cool idea, but it is way to easy.
This game could be a lot better if they made a version 2 or something. - AndrewDB, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3Man, I got to level 9, and started getting really bored of it, but it occurred to me how cool this concept would be if they coupled it with Portal's gameplay.
It'd be a really hard to design game, but it'd be amazing. - perre, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Time machine and multiple selves? This rocks. I NEVER click "instructions." And in this game, same story. But if you don't you're looking at a crazy mind-numbing experience of being able to go nowhere on the most basic level of the game. Hint: click "walkthrough." It's fast and explains enough to help wrap your mind around the time travel element - at least enough to get you going.
- while1dan, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0The in-game instructions are all you really need. Kudos to the makers for that.
- roseap, on 05/07/2008, -0/+11That was one of the most clever web games I've played in a long time. Loved the bit about the paradox.
- DrummerAndrew, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1Each version of you adds to it. This is crazy. I was able to jump on things, but new versions of me made those things higher so I have to jump higher. I'm not sure if this is fun or not, though.
- CheekyBunky, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0Ohhh I love mind bending games! Like the Flash version of Portal. The only Mind Bender I dont like is "Prey", great game, but God I felt so ill after playing for over 30 minutes!
- Ansem, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Cool idea, I just got bored after level 7.
And went to play GTA IV - Linuturk, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Level 18 is a bitch. Damn floor.
- Gromdul, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I couldn't get past 11. I knew what I had to do, but the mechanics of the boxes are a little funky.
- quisph, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Great concept, but the implementation could use some polishing. On one of the levels, I referred to the timer so that I could make all the guys jump at the same moment (exactly 0:40), but by the 4th or 5th time through the first two were out of sync. Little quirks like that can be frustrating.
- Verz, on 05/07/2008, -3/+1I was planning to make something like this..
You guys would be seeing it now if ActionScript wasn't so ***** evil.. - NathanielJ, on 05/07/2008, -2/+2Buried for being glitchy. Even just on level 3 one of my former selves stopped standing on one of the buttons once I got to my 4th self, making it impossible to beat the level. I was bored enough at that point that I just quit.
- coleki, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2i saw this and knew i had to play it on my lunch hour.. i got to level 12 and then started having some problems visualizing the answer. i was only 2 minutes late back to work ;) i really like this game.
- HydrogenOxide, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Next game: PortaShiftoTron
More win than the 2001/Portal XKCD - scubaman5000, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4I make a great team :)
- amirman, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5ok, level 18 is impossible because these robots don't sync up correctly at all. fun game though.
- craigydbuzzbitt, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1the lift on that level is sooooo buggy, took me ages to get it so they were all in the right place without falling through(or not) accidentally... :(
- chaosatom333, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0this is the most innovative, mind boggling game i have ever played after portal.
- teambosun, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2By level 11 the robots start to not repeat what I did earlier exactly.
- xyllar, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Got to 20, then ran into a glitch. The game lags and the time machine falls through the floor!
- HonestAbe, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2It would be great if it weren't glitchy and the timing were off. I'm sick of playing the same board over and over because the robot jumps sooner than he did the previous time.
- sagerage, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1this game is buggy - the previous robot inputs are recorded and played back, which allows for paradoxes, but also causes slight variations in robot behavior between loops - very annoying when choreographing complex moves on some levels
p.s. the level 20 time machine falling is part of the level - look more closely - the bomb explodes and releases the pushbutton - missingnoh4x, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Dugg for Mitch Hedberg.
- danteserotica, on 05/11/2008, -1/+0it sure is getting easier to spot digg repeat stories...especially a story i submitted not 5 days ago...
- dwightismyhero, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1wow...i just burnt a decent hour of my life playing this. got to level twelve. refuse to close this internet window so i don't have to start over again.
- sarahtomic, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1If you get an account, it'll save your level!
Yay for all thirty-five!
...And the five bonus levels!
...And the easter egg levels, even if they do kind of suck.
- sarahtomic, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1If you get an account, it'll save your level!
- neelts, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0fully completed few days ago
