- xkingADROCKx, on 07/07/2008, -6/+17O RLY??
- SilverWyrm, on 07/07/2008, -0/+18My thoughts exactly.
I don't have the patientce for that grind-fest, though. - maglob, on 07/07/2008, -0/+22I know what you mean, but its one of those games you wanna play again, you put it off for ages and ages, finally play it again for 10 mins, get bored and play something else.

http://digg.com/pc_games/DIABLO_3_ANNOUNCED_AT_WWI- Furkle, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1you're pretty dumb eh?
- Ortheos, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4Yeah because GRAFIX = GAMEPLAY
- Nobiting, on 07/07/2008, -5/+178Pretty incredible considering the game is Java based and played within a browser.
- DanBoodro, on 07/07/2008, -22/+1without any plugins mind you.
- MWeather, on 07/07/2008, -0/+30How do you run Java applets in your browser without plugins?
- Pittance, on 07/07/2008, -8/+3He probably meant no extra plugins. Almost every browser has java plugins standard.
- MWeather, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Well, except IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari.
- PsychoDesigns, on 07/07/2008, -2/+10I was about to bitch about the graphics before I saw your comment.. not bad..
- HigherLogic, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2This article reminded me about an article I just read about hardware accelerated graphics in browsers without the use of something like Flash or Java: http://my.opera.com/core/blog/2008/06/05/engineeri ...
- digitaldivinci, on 07/07/2008, -5/+51As a former player of about three years, I'm glad to see it advance to this level.
I actually miss some of the people I hung out with on there.- hilo4321, on 07/07/2008, -24/+4i dont think its appropriate to call gaming "hanging out"
- Borgcube, on 07/07/2008, -0/+16Its an MMO. Without "hanging out" part, its basically a job.
- Llanowar, on 07/07/2008, -1/+7I still consider it one of the best mmo's out there. (or well, it used to be anyway, the latest updates I've heard about suck big time)
Of course it's low graphic, doesn't have really interactive fighting, and very grindy. But, there is more to do there than on most games. The game doesn't consist of only fighting like most other games do. - rz8472, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4I don't miss the mining... was a veteran of those days where it meant clicking on rocks as rapidly as possible to get that coal; there was never enough coal.
- BlueCadenza, on 07/07/2008, -3/+0LOL I'm amazed this game still exists. It was AWESOME eight years ago when we had guild wars. I remember losing my life to save King Sabre, and fighting off the Messiahs that would always hide behind gates and shoot noobs with their arrows.
The guild "I've got your back" mentality was the only reason I kept playing runescape. I tried playing again and its such a lonely game now.
- hilo4321, on 07/07/2008, -24/+4i dont think its appropriate to call gaming "hanging out"
- L4WL3RS34L, on 07/07/2008, -6/+36What happened to the good old version 8 years ago where everywhere was pvp. They completely ruined this game IMO.
- herschman321, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4haha those were the days...
- havesometea, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5Yep, but they wanted to stamp out real-world trading so bad that they cut off their nose to spite their face. The really ruined the game.
- TomFrost, on 07/07/2008, -6/+2"Despite" :) I promise, it makes WAY more sense that way.
- BlueCadenza, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Wow you played back then?
As I replied to someone else above, pvp was the thing that made me play. Having the risk of losing all your things made it much more exciting. Having friends IRL and in clans and traveling in packs was awesome.
Not to mention the great guild wars. Battle of Varrock, battle of barbarian village, those were the days.
I tried returning to runescape some years ago and tried reviving the syndicate (the group of guilds that were the "good guys" against the messiahs), but people were too lame and its no fun being a clan without having someone to war against. My sad attempts were recorded in the offical rs clan history.

- DragonForce4, on 07/07/2008, -21/+184the game still sucks though
- BJLStorm, on 07/07/2008, -13/+8Seriously it does. Might as well pay the money and play WOW if you really want to play a MMORPG.
- jmp478, on 07/07/2008, -1/+12but one of the worse things was the graphics...
That and the 10 year olds constantly asking for free stuff.- ZeroFive1, on 07/07/2008, -2/+123ree goold plz lololol. cman i;monly lvl2
I don't like MMORPGs.
The PvP in WoW was pretty cool though.

- latova, on 07/07/2008, -15/+41Horrible timing, right after diablo III.
- Chebsi, on 07/07/2008, -3/+7Well, Diablo 3 is still quite a while away... although I'd still rather play Diablo 2 single player than Runescape.
- TheSlinky, on 07/07/2008, -4/+1I'd rather run my balls back and forth over a cheese grater then dip them in battery acid and use the grated testicles to make a snack which I will then proceed to eat than play Runescape
- shondell, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3Yea, I don't think they are going for the same age demographic either.
Runescape = 10-14 year old nerds Diablo = 21-45 year old nerds- AzureRise, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3Not that old. I know 18 year olds flipping out over the Diablo 3 announcement. Sometimes I forget how geeky some of my friends are, then my guy friends fail an assignment because they'd rather watch the gameplay videos throughout the entire class instead of doing their work, and one of my female friends messages me "OMG OMG OMG Diablo 3!!1111".
- heartless_, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3Completely off base. The majority of Runescape players do not play on PCs capable of running the newest games such as Diablo III.
Stop being ignorant and understand that there are more gamers outside of the "hardcore circle" than within and most of them could give a ***** less about Diablo III.- PoSSeSSeDCoW, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3That's one hell of an overreaction there. I have yet to meet one person who is not embarrassed by the time they spent playing Runescape.
Also, Diablo is one of the most easily accessible RPGs out there.

Honestly, I can't say I do.- killscreenes, on 07/07/2008, -3/+27I really do too. After it changed to 3D, I stopped playing. It just wasn't the same.
- ExRe, on 07/07/2008, -0/+27The game kicked ass back before they started adding members only stuff. Around then was the time they started ***** everything up. They put in a limit so if you stood in one place for 5 minutes it would log you out (autominers are a requirement for the game I think, I didn't have that much time to waste).
Then they added the really ***** up stuff when mining where once you got a mineral it would take a while to "grow" back.
Anyone remember the day the tried putting on a word filter? They were threatening to ban anyone who swore and blocked out so much that you couldn't even say a sentence without hitting a filter. - Tyrghast, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6I quit playing the day it went to 3d.

- Depravo, on 07/07/2008, -3/+9Nor me. Getting rid of wilderness PvP was the smartest move they ever made.
One of the biggest complaints about Runescape was the immature and impolite community and it was mainly the wilderness that attracted these arseholes.
The Jagex propaganda machine maintains that the wilderness changes were made to combat RWT but I still say the real agenda was a sort a ethnic cleansing. A pogrom against *****.- Depravo, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7I think they all moved onto Digg. =)
- Llort, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5They removed the PvP Wilderness? Damn they ***** that game up..

- fromaworld, on 07/07/2008, -24/+142Okay... How did this get on the front page? Runescape is the game I always see pre-teens playing in the public library.
- dood, on 07/07/2008, -6/+57http://digg.com/how
"Become popular. Once a submission has earned a critical mass of Diggs, it becomes “popular” and jumps to the homepage in its category. If it becomes one of the most popular, it qualifies as a “Top 10”. If a submission doesn't receive enough Diggs within a certain time period, it eventually falls out of the “Upcoming” section."
In short, it's not magic. People liked it, people clicked it. It's no big thing.
People act as though digg must be this news source specifically tailored for them, and for every article that comes up that they're not interested in, they must tell the world. I can't imagine what they do to newspaper editors.- Scynet, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2True, but just like everyone has the right to digg any article they like to the frontpage, they also have the right to bury them and explain their reasoning to others in the discussion. There's no "rule" that prevents anyone from trying to convince others to agree, this IS social networking after all.
And so on...try to understand that the cake is a lie, no matter what you do. - dood, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4Yeah, people have the right to explain the reasoning, but I find it irritating. I suspect most people that shout "buried" do not actually bury the article, and instead only do it to be part of the in-crowd elite of digg -- the ones that view every article, take notes, and then compare them against every subsequent article to see if they're the same or similar.
I think it's obnoxious behavior. But I'm sure there are many who feel that my behavior (blocking them) is obnoxious as well. Oh well! I try not to bring it up very often, to keep my hypocrisy to a minimum. Heh.

- skipdog172, on 07/07/2008, -1/+22I do work on about 40ish libraries in Eastern Nebraska and yeah.... one of my duties is making SURE that runescape WORKS on all PCs(most of these small-town libraries have 8-12 PCs) including the ones donated by Bill & Melinda gates which can be a major pain(they have all these built-in user restrictions...takes way too long to get anything to work). But hey, at least it brings kids into the libraries....
- styx31989, on 07/07/2008, -1/+14I can't tell you how right you are! When my computer was screwed up and I needed on the internet, I had to go to the library. The only problem is that you have to get there before the little kids, because they spend hours playing Runescape and hogging the computers! ***** bastards even told me that they have computers at home, and that their parents thought they were studying!
- Zuggy, on 07/07/2008, -0/+9One of the reasons I find this exciting, being someone who completely hates the game, is because it shows how quickly 3d engines running in browsers are advancing. Between this and Quake Live we can see that web applications aren't just going to replace office type applications but PC Games too

- trunks333, on 07/07/2008, -11/+61still looks like *****
- awtripp, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2So? Shouldn't matter too much if it's fun to pay and has content to keep you occupied. It is more of a piece of ***** if it only has good graphics and ***** gameplay and no lasting appeal.
- chaosblade77, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't say RuneScape has much lasting appeal on it's own. It does have some really, really great quests, there are about three that really stand out to me that were brilliantly designed considering the limitations of the game. There would probably be a few more, but I haven't played that game in ages...
Really, outside of the quests and the community (which was on it's way to hell when I quit, but I still had some great friends), it's just a more detailed grindfest than those free MMOs that no one plays. Minigames get old really quickly, and they pretty much removed everything that made competition between players fun.

- alach11, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Graphics are a terrible indicator of a game. I play SSBM while Crysis is collecting dust in a corner.
- HaMMeReD, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1And I play mgs4 and gta4 while my wii sits in the corner, oh wait it's not there anymore I sold it.

- kitaljevich, on 07/07/2008, -11/+112Runescape, lol.
- Paradoxt, on 07/07/2008, -3/+13They need to redo some of the back-end stuff, rather than just update the graphics.
- destron, on 07/07/2008, -6/+39Still looks *****, but since it's a browser game I'll give it a break.
- Xihix, on 07/07/2008, -11/+8I remember I used to play this game from late 2004 to early 2007 or so. I quit after that on good terms, but I heard the game got really stupid after that. I guess it's a good thing I quit before it got really crappy. I have fond memories, though.
- hilo4321, on 07/07/2008, -4/+2yeah i quit on bad terms
??- chaosblade77, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1I quit on bad terms... sort of. I "quit" due to lack of interest sometime around the middle of 2007. Ended up still getting on though because I had some really good friends.
Lasted a while, but eventually it got to the point where every change made to the game seemed to hurt it more than it helped. Whether the update was just completely stupid, or it was just a buggy update that caused massive lag/freezing... they were just never good.

- Zuwiki, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1No, it got stupid when it was released to the public, and "really" stupid around 2004. I don't know what the hell you were playing.
- hilo4321, on 07/07/2008, -4/+2yeah i quit on bad terms
- Ducksa, on 07/07/2008, -11/+9I actually think it looks pretty nice and I'll give it another shot!
- destron, on 07/07/2008, -2/+29Rules of Runescape, #1: YOU DO NOT PLAY RUNESCAPE
- inetiatic, on 07/07/2008, -4/+10They lost me at Runescape 2. The game was interesting because the graphics were bad, they cant try to make a browser game something it cant. Have to give them props for sort of being innovative, and making alot while they do it.
- ktulu19, on 07/07/2008, -6/+5i was pretty much done with this game after about 3 days of trying it.
- BJLStorm, on 07/07/2008, -4/+3Yeah, it's a load of fail and *****.
- sandiegodude, on 07/07/2008, -6/+32MMO? Haha, the only thing massive that I remember about it was the run to collect ore, then another run to smelt, then yet another run to forge. This game had so many lame time sinks. Wasn't even fun. The biggest laugh of all though is the "130 million registered players." Spambots and alts and freebie try-outs. How many actual regulars who pay the monthly fee though? I'm betting MUCH less.
- ThReAtEnEd, on 07/07/2008, -6/+8I just checked. As of now, there are 157189 players. there are about 70 members servers, all together about 1000+ on each. (yes there are a few under 1000 but the ones with over 1000 make up for them since a lot of those servers are around 1300-1700). That would mean around half of the players are on a members server, which is still a lot. Many f2p members upgrade to members, taking advantage of f2p while low level so they can upgrade when they can get the "full experience" of members.
If that's all you remember of runescape, either you were too low a level when you quit (being a low level always blows. suck it up.) or/and you were in the old version of runescape. The world has really gotten bigger since then so why don't you give it a try?- TheGhostMan, on 07/07/2008, -6/+4so i take it 157,189 is half of 130 million
- ThReAtEnEd, on 07/07/2008, -1/+7not half of 130m, half of the total online players.
- Tribis, on 07/07/2008, -1/+8The brothers who founded the company are two of the wealthiest men in the UK. Someone is playing.
- Bego, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1They have almost 2 million monthly subscribers.

- impiri, on 07/07/2008, -4/+13The last Runescape updates were awful and made some of the best players leave the game. I hope this helps bring some of them back.
- TH3W1R3D, on 07/07/2008, -7/+28Misleading... You can't play it unless your a full member...
- Depravo, on 07/07/2008, -6/+6Only while it's in the beta stage. Once it's finalised it will be available for the freeplayer demo too.
- bigfatdummy, on 07/07/2008, -4/+14Jagex sucks? They let you play a limited version of their game for free. You could play for years on the free version and max out all your skills before ever upgrading to add more content. Let's see Blizzard let people play WOW for years without charging them.
Teens play the game because its free. Many teens will have some trouble getting their parents to buy them a $50.00 game and then have a recurring charge of 14.99 a month. I am glad teens are exposed to this type of game for cheap/free. Hopefully, it will lead them into better mmorpg's in time. - AzureRise, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6I'd be more glad if they were exposed to fresh air and other teens, but whatever.

- TehJoe, on 07/07/2008, -1/+9I'm a bit more inclined to play Runescape with this update, plus a lot of Members only things are coming over to the Free Side of the Force. THIS was what I was waiting for.
- backseatchris, on 07/07/2008, -1/+12I love how my account from 2001 is worth more now than ever. apparently all those "Holiday drop items" they used to have are now worth Hundreds of millions of coins. Im sellin them alllll.
- herschman321, on 07/07/2008, -2/+14then what are you going to do, buy a car?
- Andrwmorph, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6an e-car!
- bagelmaster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3But seriously, he could sell the gold on ebay and buy a real car!
- BlueCadenza, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3A while back you could sell them for 200 dollars on ebay. Ebay banned them since lol.
I wish I would've sold my stuff, I had the crackers pumpkins disc of returning golden crown all that jazz.
- herschman321, on 07/07/2008, -2/+14then what are you going to do, buy a car?
- kubedawg, on 07/07/2008, -7/+11Runescape is fun. Always has been, always will be. It's like that game you play when you've got 15 minutes before you gotta go to work or something... Oh wait, that's TF2...
- alexismyhomeboi, on 07/07/2008, -5/+15Hmmm, should Blizzard do the same to WoW?
- pikpikcarrotmon, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Strip out PvP and open trades, then give the game a graphical overhaul that makes it impossible to play for half of their membership?
- etx313, on 07/07/2008, -4/+21Why play Runescape when you can give your self a home lobotomy?
- zippe, on 07/07/2008, -2/+5i remember when i used to play that. i might have to check it out.
- TinternAbbot, on 07/07/2008, -15/+8This ***** still exists? The losers in my middle school would play this.
- solarwind24, on 07/07/2008, -13/+3The only reason I have anything to do with this game is because I used to develop cheats/bots/hacks for it. Being Java based, the game could be easily debugged and repacked to generate modified clients to make bots. BCEL for the win. Greatly expanded my Java knowledge to be honest.

- nard3456, on 07/07/2008, -5/+4There is no way in hell I'm paying for that online crap. I don't care if it is high detail.
- benbrooks101, on 07/07/2008, -3/+8And yet it still looks *****.
- BrownManUPS, on 07/07/2008, -0/+12I played this game for like 2 years and my character still exists in game...but I haven't touched it in a while and I don't think a graphics update is going to be the breaker for me.
- nitr021, on 07/07/2008, -10/+1I remember the fake weddings taking place on that game, good god why would you do that?
High detail offered isn't as good as COD4 or mgs4 (yeah i know its on ps3). When it does get to that level of detail call me and Ill sign up.- InfernoX, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7You're an idiot... this is a browser based MMO for ***** sake as it stands the graphics it's able to achieve as is are amazing.
- Atomic1fire, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Depends
Maybe for java but Rokkitball (instantaction.com) looked pretty good although that used a entirely different plugin.
- Atomic1fire, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Depends
- Chebsi, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5So you'd play a crappy game if it had nice graphics?
- bagelmaster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I hate new gen gamers. I remember back in the day when GAMEPLAY mattered more than who had the biggest graphics card in their system.

- foltaggio, on 07/11/2008, -8/+2I lost the game.
- bufar, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2So did I.
- FFXIfrohike, on 07/07/2008, -9/+2Polishing a browser MMO, eh? Kinda like polishing... somethin' else.
- Lazydriver, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3A turd?
- Megatog615, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4I never really liked RuneScape but I'm glad to see old games getting a graphics touch up.
- TalOrmanda, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2It's in the Beta period so only subscribing members can use it because it still has many bugs. It will be available to all once everything is fixed. And there are bugs in it so far.
- luap119, on 07/07/2008, -5/+3People still play this game?!
- FutureisDubious, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Don't act like you don't play anymore. You know you were logged in earlier this morning.
- luap119, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0SHHHHHHHHHHHH! don't give away my cover.
- Chris4, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Lmao.

- noin, on 07/07/2008, -6/+5How the hell did Runescape make it to the frontpage... the new low?
- RoboCafaz, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5I've never been a fan of the game, but I have to say, this is an impressive feat.
- wondertwins, on 07/07/2008, -11/+1Its called WOW guys? seriously....
- KnuckleZ, on 07/07/2008, -2/+2Seriously they both suck.
- someone31988, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I remember playing the old 3D with sprites with no sound version of Runscape back in middle school. Back when it was full PVP and only had one server.
- aenima987, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6HD? Really?
- Chris4, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3HD = High Definition.
High Definition = An increase in quality and resolution.
So yes, HD.
- Chris4, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3HD = High Definition.
- Runningflame570, on 07/07/2008, -0/+21Runescape has much bigger issues than just graphics, although congrats to them for finally surpassing the 1995 standard. Pacing is the biggest one, sure training skills can be fun...up to a point. Quests are all well and good also but why do you have to either buy a ton of runes or move as slow as heck across the map?
They should make the running speed the new walk and up the running speed, that alone would help a ton.
Jagex also needs to bring back PKing in the wilderness. After some time PKing or avoiding PKers was the only thing that didn't make you want to blow your brains out..especially around the Dark Knight Fortress and Lava Maze, great times there escaping PKers.- EIderofzion, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I particularly despise those Revenants they've added since the changes, has anyone figured out how to kill them?
- bagelmaster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6They need to also bring back the old trading system. This new 10k difference or whatever it is (haven't played in 3 years but I follow updates) is just retarded.
- Smeed, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I havent played in years, but I can see how the lack of PKing, the auction house and the "wealth" system would complicate and screw up the game. IMO they should do away with the auction house. Everyone in that game buys and sells cheap items in bulk, there arent enough items to really need an auction house either. Half of the fun was buying and selling. Their anti-player scamming measures complicate the game because half of the player base is whiny retards.
- Runningflame570, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0The wealth system is a problem, anything really good goes (or went when I last played) for upwards of 30K which is really freaking hard to get especially as a non-member. When I was in the game my smithing was around 67 and crafting of about 50 and I had a hard time making that kind of cash. That is fairly typical of games MMOs though, so it isn't just a problem for them.
One other thing I forgot to mention though was the word filters, they are overzealous to the point of being a severe hinderance..or were anyways. When word filters interfere with normal conversation on a regular basis they need to be relaxed.

- Venemous, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3They are calling High Detail "HD"
- Emperial, on 07/07/2008, -3/+2Runescape.... who cares..... Down it goes!!!
