      Of course it's low graphic, doesn't have really interactive fighting, and very grindy. But, there is more to do there than on most games. The game doesn't consist of only fighting like most other games do.

      The guild "I've got your back" mentality was the only reason I kept playing runescape. I tried playing again and its such a lonely game now.

      As I replied to someone else above, pvp was the thing that made me play. Having the risk of losing all your things made it much more exciting. Having friends IRL and in clans and traveling in packs was awesome.

      Not to mention the great guild wars. Battle of Varrock, battle of barbarian village, those were the days.

      I tried returning to runescape some years ago and tried reviving the syndicate (the group of guilds that were the "good guys" against the messiahs), but people were too lame and its no fun being a clan without having someone to war against. My sad attempts were recorded in the offical rs clan history.

Sometimes I forget how geeky some of my friends are, then my guy friends fail an assignment because they'd rather watch the gameplay videos throughout the entire class instead of doing their work, and one of my female friends messages me "OMG OMG OMG Diablo 3!!1111".

      Stop being ignorant and understand that there are more gamers outside of the "hardcore circle" than within and most of them could give a ***** less about Diablo III.

        Also, Diablo is one of the most easily accessible RPGs out there.

They put in a limit so if you stood in one place for 5 minutes it would log you out (autominers are a requirement for the game I think, I didn't have that much time to waste).

        Then they added the really ***** up stuff when mining where once you got a mineral it would take a while to "grow" back.

        Anyone remember the day the tried putting on a word filter? They were threatening to ban anyone who swore and blocked out so much that you couldn't even say a sentence without hitting a filter.

      One of the biggest complaints about Runescape was the immature and impolite community and it was mainly the wilderness that attracted these arseholes.

      The Jagex propaganda machine maintains that the wilderness changes were made to combat RWT but I still say the real agenda was a sort a ethnic cleansing. A pogrom against *****.

      In short, it's not magic. People liked it, people clicked it. It's no big thing.

      People act as though digg must be this news source specifically tailored for them, and for every article that comes up that they're not interested in, they must tell the world. I can't imagine what they do to newspaper editors.

There's no "rule" that prevents anyone from trying to convince others to agree, this IS social networking after all.

I suspect most people that shout "buried" do not actually bury the article, and instead only do it to be part of the in-crowd elite of digg -- the ones that view every article, take notes, and then compare them against every subsequent article to see if they're the same or similar.

        I think it's obnoxious behavior. But I'm sure there are many who feel that my behavior (blocking them) is obnoxious as well. Oh well! I try not to bring it up very often, to keep my hypocrisy to a minimum. Heh.
    • skipdog172, on 07/07/2008, -1/+22I do work on about 40ish libraries in Eastern Nebraska and yeah.... one of my duties is making SURE that runescape WORKS on all PCs(most of these small-town libraries have 8-12 PCs) including the ones donated by Bill & Melinda gates which can be a major pain(they have all these built-in user restrictions...takes way too long to get anything to work). But hey, at least it brings kids into the libraries....

The only problem is that you have to get there before the little kids, because they spend hours playing Runescape and hogging the computers! ***** bastards even told me that they have computers at home, and that their parents thought they were studying!

Between this and Quake Live we can see that web applications aren't just going to replace office type applications but PC Games too

It does have some really, really great quests, there are about three that really stand out to me that were brilliantly designed considering the limitations of the game. There would probably be a few more, but I haven't played that game in ages...

        Really, outside of the quests and the community (which was on it's way to hell when I quit, but I still had some great friends), it's just a more detailed grindfest than those free MMOs that no one plays. Minigames get old really quickly, and they pretty much removed everything that made competition between players fun.

        Lasted a while, but eventually it got to the point where every change made to the game seemed to hurt it more than it helped. Whether the update was just completely stupid, or it was just a buggy update that caused massive lag/freezing... they were just never good.

This game had so many lame time sinks. Wasn't even fun. The biggest laugh of all though is the "130 million registered players." Spambots and alts and freebie try-outs. How many actual regulars who pay the monthly fee though? I'm betting MUCH less.
    • ThReAtEnEd, on 07/07/2008, -6/+8I just checked. As of now, there are 157189 players. there are about 70 members servers, all together about 1000+ on each. (yes there are a few under 1000 but the ones with over 1000 make up for them since a lot of those servers are around 1300-1700). That would mean around half of the players are on a members server, which is still a lot. Many f2p members upgrade to members, taking advantage of f2p while low level so they can upgrade when they can get the "full experience" of members.

      If that's all you remember of runescape, either you were too low a level when you quit (being a low level always blows. suck it up.) or/and you were in the old version of runescape. The world has really gotten bigger since then so why don't you give it a try?

        Teens play the game because its free. Many teens will have some trouble getting their parents to buy them a $50.00 game and then have a recurring charge of 14.99 a month. I am glad teens are exposed to this type of game for cheap/free. Hopefully, it will lead them into better mmorpg's in time.

Being Java based, the game could be easily debugged and repacked to generate modified clients to make bots. BCEL for the win. Greatly expanded my Java knowledge to be honest.

  • Runningflame570, on 07/07/2008, -0/+21Runescape has much bigger issues than just graphics, although congrats to them for finally surpassing the 1995 standard. Pacing is the biggest one, sure training skills can be fun...up to a point. Quests are all well and good also but why do you have to either buy a ton of runes or move as slow as heck across the map?

    They should make the running speed the new walk and up the running speed, that alone would help a ton.

    Jagex also needs to bring back PKing in the wilderness. After some time PKing or avoiding PKers was the only thing that didn't make you want to blow your brains out..especially around the Dark Knight Fortress and Lava Maze, great times there escaping PKers.

    • Smeed, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I havent played in years, but I can see how the lack of PKing, the auction house and the "wealth" system would complicate and screw up the game. IMO they should do away with the auction house. Everyone in that game buys and sells cheap items in bulk, there arent enough items to really need an auction house either. Half of the fun was buying and selling. Their anti-player scamming measures complicate the game because half of the player base is whiny retards.
      • Runningflame570, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0The wealth system is a problem, anything really good goes (or went when I last played) for upwards of 30K which is really freaking hard to get especially as a non-member. When I was in the game my smithing was around 67 and crafting of about 50 and I had a hard time making that kind of cash. That is fairly typical of games MMOs though, so it isn't just a problem for them.

        One other thing I forgot to mention though was the word filters, they are overzealous to the point of being a severe hinderance..or were anyways. When word filters interfere with normal conversation on a regular basis they need to be relaxed.
