Sony announces MAG, 256-player combat
joystiq.com — 256 players in squads of eight, fighting across an online battlefield. Coming sometime after 2008.

256?! What happened to Huxley? - machocheese34, on 07/16/2008, -21/+32This is... never going to come out.
- craftyguy, on 07/16/2008, -25/+1I agree, sounds like a front for more rootkit goodness from Sony.
- santasing, on 07/16/2008, -1/+19rootkits....really? How does that even make sense?
- celkin, on 07/16/2008, -1/+5Psh, I hear Nuke Nukem Forever will have 512-player combat!
- TitanX7, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1SOCOM CA came out in 2006. 1.5 Years in production, let's hope it'll come out somewhat soon.
- mwalker05, on 07/16/2008, -4/+7revolutionary for a console. its about time they start making headway into what pc's can do in regards to multiplayer. 256 will never happen unless the players were on a lan, but i would be happy with 32 online and no lag.
- thecwin, on 07/16/2008, -4/+6Ever played R:FoM? Online matches of 40 players, never had any lag that wasn't because of my own WLAN (internet is 2 mbps ADSL).
- turpenine, on 07/16/2008, -0/+8battlefield 2 had 64 players since 2004 (or 2005).
- dandonia, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Could someone tell me what shooting games have 256 players per match? On PC, 360, PS3 anything.
- Tripacer9999, on 07/16/2008, -6/+6THAT'S A HUGE BITCH
- piper999, on 07/16/2008, -4/+2No, your mother is a huge bitch. This a a large videogame.
- PopASquatt, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1It's not small! It's thin!
- PhoenixTril, on 07/16/2008, -10/+5It would be, if it wasn't only going to come out for the PS3.
And speaking from experience, having played FPS games before, 32 pubbies is hard enough to organize. 128 of them would be insane.- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2008, -4/+3I completely agree.
Even 32 players is too many sometimes - the random death that happens when you've got that many potential guns trained on you just isn't fun.
SO the only way they could pull this off is if the maps were gigantic... and then you'd hardly ever see all that many people in one place anyway, making the whole 256 player thing completely pointless. - qwertydvorak, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1@Fred: that's the beauty of having that many people. the grand scale of things. in battlefield 2 you have 64 people on a map like wake island, or strike at karkand. you can run for 5 minutes solid and not cover the entire ground on foot. now double the square mileage and put 128 or 256 people on there and you can add more jets and helicopters. it would really make it great to play on a large scale.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2008, -4/+3I completely agree.
- djkool14, on 07/16/2008, -5/+3Umm... It's called PlanetSide. Sony did this like 6 years ago....
- PhoenixTril, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Naw, I played Planetside for a while. It was much much bigger, but everyone was spread out to hell and gone all over and the individual engagements were relatively small. And everyone was organized into large platoons and clans. If you weren't in one, you really didn't play that much.
Biggest battle I had wasn't much more than those that I had in Tribes 2 32/32 servers, just because there's a finite number of people that can cram into an area at a time.

- ericrous, on 07/16/2008, -7/+2If they can actually make it happen, with no lag, this would be very impressive. But that's a pretty big "if." Sony and their cohorts are notorious for being big on promises, not always so great on actual delivery. I will reserve further judgment until it's actually out.
- apena89, on 07/16/2008, -2/+4this comment actually had more diggs than buries earlier. I assume all the 360 monsters woke up and checked their feeds.
:O
- 55GUNNM, on 07/15/2008, -14/+4 128 heavily armed commandos back to back with the enemy in a single line. "10" 98765 as they take 10 paces forward before turning to shoot> 4321 Then the pregame lobby closes and takes 256 players to spawn points beginning the MP mode. What? No team speak?
- billjimbob, on 07/15/2008, -8/+55Looks like a modern version of Planetside, which is exactly what I've been looking for (for some odd reason). I was thinking maybe a CoD MMO, but this looks just as cool. I think Zipper are the guys who made SOCOM initially? If so, it should be good. I like that it's 8v8v8v8 etc., instead of just two big teams.
The rest of Sony's E3 press conference was weak, though. They certainly did nothing to rain on Microsoft's parade...- twistedlogic149, on 07/15/2008, -14/+56I think Sony managed to stay on-par with Microsoft. Microsoft was mostly announcing multi-platform games. As big of a deal as it is that they're getting FF13, it's not an exclusive... whereas Sony rolled out nothing but exclusives with Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, a new Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, and then of course M.A.G. which is just incredible.
When you compare the two... it really seems like Sony might have done a lot better. Microsoft was pretty much doing free promotion for their games, despite coming out on other consoles as well.- WhereAmI, on 07/15/2008, -17/+11The only announcement that can be close to the FFXIII thing would have been a 300$ PS3 or less, but they didn't do that.
Alot of content but nothing too impacting. Would have been great if they went first. - apena89, on 07/16/2008, -10/+2What should have been done was keep the 40gb but just drop the price by like $50.
And i read somewhere that Sony shifted strategies and gave up Final Fantasy exclusiveness and try to focus more on their japanese RPG market, and getting Dragon Quest exclusive since it is Sony's biggest RPG money maker in Japan. So i read. - kinseyincanada, on 07/16/2008, -9/+7true but all those exclusive games with the exception of M.A.G. are all expected, and the only 2 pretty much guaranteed to be huge sellers are God of War and GT5
- BoonTobias, on 07/16/2008, -1/+22+ infamous
- 3sicasity, on 07/16/2008, -0/+19Yeah the inFamous trailer looked amazing.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/16/2008, -0/+15Ratchet & Clank put a smile on my face. I can't wait for Quest For Booty.
- WhereAmI, on 07/15/2008, -17/+11The only announcement that can be close to the FFXIII thing would have been a 300$ PS3 or less, but they didn't do that.
- billjimbob, on 07/15/2008, -19/+4GoW2, Fable 2, Banjo Kazooie, Last Remnant, Lips, Portal: Still Alive, Geometry Wars, Primetime.... then the new dashboard, avatars, and Netflix. And these are all things that will be coming this year to the 360 (unlike GT5, God of War 3, MAG). And, of course, FF13 and all the other multiplatform games mentioned.
Like I said, I'm definitely looking foward to MAG, but nothing else at the conference was exciting. - apena89, on 07/16/2008, -10/+4i kind of feel like they didn't have to act strong to show off some great new stuff. I laughed when the speaker said "awesome" in a monotone voice about some new PSP stuff. Phil Harrison would have been nice.
- flamov, on 07/16/2008, -0/+8Well, with respect they did reveal quite a lot - they confirmed GoW3, more LittleBigPlanet stuff; Star Strike Portable seemed to please A LOT of people. It's not just their conference, it's also the rest of E3 - a lot was revealed about LittleBigPlanet during the demos, for example.
I watched the Live Stream of the event, and in my opinion, I think they stole E3. It's was very entertaining (the LittleBigPlanet sales presentation was very cool) and it seemed very friendly.
Also, their announcement of the HD and SD video purchase and rentals was pretty big too, seeing how much respect Sony has in the production and publishing side of Movies and TV. - santasing, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5Fat Princess, and that Commando game.
- DyceFreak, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2that would make some crazy ass LAN party :D, you literally couldn't do it on a class C address...
- Ph34rb0t, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1unless you can have multiple people on each system in splitscreen.

- Ph34rb0t, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1unless you can have multiple people on each system in splitscreen.
- unusualbob, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2btw, yes Zipper did make Socom
- jacen, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I watched the G4 E3 coverage when they announced this and from my understanding (despite what the article says), it is not a free-for-all 8v8v8v8v8 ect. The game is organized into 8 player squads which in turn make up two giant opposing teams. Even the trailer shows two giant team facing off.
- BinaryDelt, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Planetside was awesome.
- twistedlogic149, on 07/15/2008, -14/+56I think Sony managed to stay on-par with Microsoft. Microsoft was mostly announcing multi-platform games. - phinn, on 07/15/2008, -28/+15PS3 80gb for $399, God of War 3, Little Big Planet, SOCOM (with headset), Resistance 2, DC Universe, Gran Turismo 5, Soul Caliber IV, Eternal Sonanta and Bioshock ports, downloadable HD movies and TV shows, and more... All those looked pretty cool but.............
Holy ******* does this look good. GoW2 = ROFL- santasing, on 07/15/2008, -5/+15That last line was unnecessary.
- WhereAmI, on 07/15/2008, -3/+12Isn't Soul Calibur on 360 as well or is Yoda homeless now?
- Spire3660, on 07/16/2008, -5/+1I am SOOOO torn on what version of Soul Calibur to get (have both consoles). Yoda or Vader, tough choice.
- ProfessorSYM, on 07/16/2008, -6/+5"Eternal Sonata and Bioshock ports"......sad.
- staticneuron, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7A port of Bioshock is sad? Then what does getting a port of Final Fantasy 13 seem so amazing?
- Blandyman, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2He means sad that he has to brag about games the 360 has had for a while, as if that makes the Sony conference seem better.
Bioshock was an amazing game, but it's too late to consider it a reason for getting excited for a console, when it's been out on another for a year. - phinn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Whats sad is your stupid enough to think it was bragging. In reality all I was doing was listing things I said "yea thats cool" too, but then at end I (like most people) were very surprised with MAG.
- EdCenter, on 07/16/2008, -9/+5dude.. why you dissing God of War 2?

sorry, had to correct him...
- hypodan, on 07/16/2008, -3/+3The Patriots are dead... or are they?
- santasing, on 07/15/2008, -1/+47The concept sounds amazing. Hope its not a run and gun style of game. make it tactical like SOCOM.
- Eezyville, on 07/16/2008, -1/+10Oh I hope so. Also let there be a split scrren multiplayer option so I can play with friends who don't own a PS3 and a local LAN option so I don't have to be online to play against friends who do own a PS3. And bots will be nice if I'm not online.
I've never understood why people stop programming in bots. Is it that hard. The PS3 should have the power to give us smarter bots. I'd be happy if they gave us the bots from Perfect Dark. The VengeSim still gives me nightmares. :(- yargthepirate, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1The PS3 uses in-order execution which is not particularly good for AI programming. It is, however, nice for making flashy textures.
This isn't unique to the PS3, all the consoles do it. - Sairgem, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I've never understood why people WANT bots these days. Unless the community is dead, why not just go online?
- yargthepirate, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1The PS3 uses in-order execution which is not particularly good for AI programming. It is, however, nice for making flashy textures.
- Blandyman, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4I still get pissed that Halo 3 doesn't have bots.
Yes, I know it hasn't had them since the first Halo and yes, I know it's not a bot game since it doesn't even go higher than 16 players... but come on. I have a lot of friends who don't have Live, and I'd love to play them at some Halo without the four screens being the only four players in the game.- Sairgem, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Take them as guests on Live then. You can play social games with friends on the same console.
- Blandyman, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Sairgem:
I also meant when I head over to their houses and take my Xbox or my controller or something and we don't have a way of logging into Live (no router near the TV, we don't have the wireless access things.)
Yeah, it's for a small subset of people, and that's why the Guest system was implemented, but bots would've alleviated a lot of stress.
- tehhowch, on 07/15/2008, -3/+17The only thing that could make this better is if it supports Halo-style multiplayer. There is nothing more frustrating than needing 4 consoles & 4 tv's for 4 friends to shoot other people online.
- Zoids, on 07/15/2008, -2/+15Like warhawk?
- nreynolds, on 07/15/2008, -1/+7the word you're looking for is "Motorstorm"
- phinn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Yea Warhawk's multiplayer is sick, love the split screen going into servers with friends.
- BearinG, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Warhawk has splitscreen play?! I had no idea! And i own it!
- WhereAmI, on 07/15/2008, -2/+10More like CoD4.
Warhawk has split screen for 4 people. You have to play on a server that allows "Split Screen."- BearinG, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Actually COD3 had 4 player split screen online (Guests) on the 360.. I was pretty disappointed that COD4 didn't
- Spire3660, on 07/16/2008, -11/+3IMHO split screen sucks. Was fun on the N64, but not so much now.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/16/2008, -2/+22When you have friends one day, you'll understand how wrong your comment is.
- Zoids, on 07/15/2008, -2/+15Like warhawk?
- yargthepirate, on 07/15/2008, -1/+58I hope that they actually release it with the name "Massive Action Game".
- phinn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Same here, it sounds on par with "Snakes on a Plane"
- apena89, on 07/16/2008, -11/+5wow and i thought 64 was alot.
They completely skipped the 100 and 200 mark and jumped to 256.
And Huxley? I'm already getting tired of the Unreal Engine 3.0. Yeah it looks/looked nice but everything was just too shiny, eventually It just stopped looking real and just started looking pretty.- Rystic, on 07/16/2008, -6/+2Skipped 128. Please, use your powers of 2.
- apena89, on 07/16/2008, -6/+2im sorry i wasn't about to waste my time using all of the powers of 2 you douchebag.

- Blandyman, on 07/16/2008, -1/+4Those are multiples of 2. Powers of 2 are 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and so on.

- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Too shiny? Between Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3, and the load of other games that use Unreal 3, I can't think of one where everything had that shiny look to it. The only game I can think of that had "plastic people" in it was BioShock, and that's the developer's fault, not the engine's.
- apena89, on 07/16/2008, -2/+2i can. the exact ones you mentioned.
- Rystic, on 07/16/2008, -6/+2Skipped 128. Please, use your powers of 2.

- LoudMusic, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6And also the only current gen console *I'M* interested in.
- piper999, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3You might want to wait the three years it will take to make this game before actually going out and getting a PS3 though.
- sovereign3, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4Gran Turismo 5 and the new Socom would be my other two reasons :)
- frostbyt, on 07/16/2008, -17/+1Free for all is for noobs.
- dj88masterchief, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1116 squads of 8 people with 128 people on each team this is going to just a bigger battlefield but better!
- nicksource, on 07/16/2008, -6/+6I don't think there are 2 sides like the majority of FPS games... Only 8 player teams (So 32 sides).
- KMartSheriff, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3Even then, that would drastically more awesome than this 4v4 crap we have now.
- nicksource, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3I see being right = dugg down. The article says Squads of 8 FFA, not 2 teams of 16 Squads.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1The article is vague enough that you could be wrong still, or partially wrong. We don't know exactly what modes there will be. You can still have multiple squads in some games where there are still only 2 overall sides in the combat. But I'll digg you up either way.

- Gamoc, on 07/16/2008, -2/+8Agreed. My sister got a Wii, and I was sick of crappy cutesy graphics within 2 days. Then I got a PS3. It was like an orgasm for my eyes.

- apena89, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7yeah you set yourself up for that one.
- ab9003, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Wow, I love how one person says something cool and then someone else uses it as a way to make an even cooler comeback. Awesome.
- Gamoc, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1That was quite good yes, well done piper999 - not that you'll ever know how making someone orgasm makes you feel, though.
- phinn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Yea it's a shame the Wii had such a disappointing E3 but maybe it'll pick up. It's amazing since it's sales are off the charts they aren't doing much. My gf has a Wii and I put Wii Homebrew Channel with all the emulators on it (even though I have them on my ps3 too) and that keeps it fun. But all in all, I'm really happy with my PS3. And so many games are coming out for all systems now it's crazy.

- TheDooku, on 07/16/2008, -0/+20It's Playstation...where online is free
- KMartSheriff, on 07/16/2008, -9/+9PSN > Xbox LIVE
- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2008, -13/+4Just... no. PSN is pathetic compared to XBL. If you think otherwise, you've not used one or the other.
- Gamoc, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5No Fred, I've played on both, PSN is better for a few reasons;
1. Faster and more reliable.
2. The Playstation Store has original games instead of remakes of older ones.
3. Not filled with prepubescent pricks with mics. - BearinG, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1PSN is fine.. it works and its free...
but faster and more reliable? come on.. playing MGS4 or GT5P, i takes a while to get in a game.. longer than it should I think..
both PSN and XBL have original games.. and mics.. seriously.. 80% of games have no one talking at all.. that's like saying its way more quieter in the grave-yard then the mall..
You're just being an idiot now.. - apoc06, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2true, however if you remove from XBL: the racist remarks, sexist remarks, lil kids, the screaming, ignorant statements, people rapping into their mics, people that leave their mics on while talking to someone else on the phone... etc... you wind up with the exact same amount of speech per game.
- Gamoc, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1"but faster and more reliable? come on.. playing MGS4 or GT5P, i takes a while to get in a game.. longer than it should I think.."
Konami were stupid enough to rely on their own system. I can't speak for GT5P, as I don't own it.
In all of the online games I have I get into games extremely quickly, even lesser-used games like UT3 are very easy to get into quickly online.
- ShogunWarPig, on 07/16/2008, -0/+9Should be entirely free after you buy. It's being developed a studio that is owned by Sony and one of Sony's point about the PS3 is the fact that the online is free.
But I still want you to knock on wood just in case. - Gamoc, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4I don't think it said MMO anywhere, so it should be free after you've bought it.
- TheDooku, on 07/16/2008, -0/+20It's Playstation...where online is free
- pumpyps, on 07/16/2008, -17/+2ok to be honest its not 256 players in one game
socom did the same thing
its 256 people in the same lobby, and you join a 8 person team and play against another in an ever changing field of action based on whether you win or lose that match on that piece of land. Again its not 256 players in one game. It's like that mech game for the 360 that had thousands of people on a server but only 16 players in a game. But they labeld it a massive online action game. Just marketing- Eezyville, on 07/16/2008, -8/+1Well damn now I feel cheated.
- evnglion, on 07/16/2008, -0/+9well actually, no, it is 256 players.
- namtellum, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6source?
- lynx44, on 07/16/2008, -2/+2You can't say that for sure. The video made it look like it was literally 256 players in the same game all playing at the same time. There isn't enough evidence to know for sure at this point.
- schlef, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2How do you know that?
- dthebear, on 07/16/2008, -7/+0this gives PS3 some market advantage
its just sad that SONY is losing money over something amazing like PS3- TheDooku, on 07/16/2008, -0/+8it's called long-term financial strategy...not losing money
- dthebear, on 07/16/2008, -2/+0they are losing money, for each PS3 they sell, they just lose less money. since the fixed cost of developing the PS3 is already there. so they have to sell regardless the price. strategy it is, but u cant deny they are losing money
- Gamoc, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0Sony broke even per PS3 quite a few months ago now.
- tastypastry, on 07/16/2008, -9/+3LAAAAG!

- Eezyville, on 07/16/2008, -2/+7If only we used Fiber Optics. :(
- 1timeuser, on 07/16/2008, -8/+7What? Something interesting from the PS3's e3 showing? INCONCEIVABLE!
- jkoski, on 07/16/2008, -0/+22You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
- quakken, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Inconceivable.
- phinn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I would say PS3, with the exception of MS's FF-XIII announcement had by far the most interesting E3 showing. And I own multiple systems.
- eelwrolyat, on 07/16/2008, -6/+1It would be awesome if you could split the 256 in half and have 2 teams too. I bet the maps are massive. I hope Xbox has something like this one day.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4They could, and knowing Microsoft, they'll nickel and dime you to death just to use it. I'm sure they'll release "Xbox LIVE Platinum".
- Blandyman, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1The servers hosting the MAG games will probably either be run by Sony (a few basic servers) and a bunch of others could probably be rented by advertisers or clans (like how Battlefield 2 is done) or if your connection is good enough from home or office.
Besides, I'm sure if Microsoft did have a title like this on their console, they wouldn't be stupid enough to charge as opposed to the competition offering it for free.
And don't mention Xbox Live because PSN is not at the level of Xbox Live yet.
- Blandyman, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1The servers hosting the MAG games will probably either be run by Sony (a few basic servers) and a bunch of others could probably be rented by advertisers or clans (like how Battlefield 2 is done) or if your connection is good enough from home or office.

- IndigoMoss, on 07/16/2008, -4/+4I wonder if there's going to be a PC port? This game sounds like it'd be at home on the PC. If it's not, it's alright though, because the PS3 supports keyboard+mouse, so hopefully this game will support it like UT3 (Hopefully it will be better than that too).
- wheezy360, on 07/16/2008, -3/+47I can't wait to hear 255 kids screaming "f**king n*****r!!!" into the microphone. That'll be music to my ears!
- jkoski, on 07/16/2008, -2/+11HATE the squeakers!
- SwedishNinja, on 07/16/2008, -13/+6My favorite is the contest before a Halo 3 game starts of who can say "VETO" the fastest.
"VETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETOVETO" - Gamoc, on 07/16/2008, -3/+14I've had a PS3 for 8 months and I have never heard anyone say anything similar to that, that's the 360's territory.
- StarlessKnight, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3CoD4 Multiplayer, they exist. The kids trying to play tough are fewer in number, but there's an equal number of "grown ups" trying to play tough as well. It's enough to be noticable, even if it isn't rampant.
- smakusdod, on 07/16/2008, -2/+6thats because you dont' have voice chat on the PS3.
okay, sorry, low blow. - SkippyDoorknob, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5I play a lot of Warhawk and hear very little of that sort of talk.
- b3owulf, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1You're obviously not playing enough Call of Duty....
- AL7AIR, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1They are breaking up the 128 man strong armies on each side into smaller squads of 8 soldiers, just like Bad Company is doing it right now with 12 guys on each side in squads of 4, or Resistance 2 is going to do it with 30 vs 30 split up into 6 squads each.
- SgtQuackers, on 07/16/2008, -2/+1Its PSN no one has microphones. I'm not sure which is better. You have no one to talk to on PSN but on Xbox Live you have a bunch of little kids screaming.
- phinn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Your definitely mistaking the PS3 for xbox 360 again, all the kids and dumb frat guys play that. I play Warhawk and Bad Company on ps3 all the time and its pretty serious.
- BearinG, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I noticed this also in Bad company on 360.. not very much kids playing it it seems.. it'll always depend on the game i guess.. for some reason its nicer.. but in Bad company also, you only get to hear your squad.. which limits the number of players you can hear so that might be a reason..
not to say that only kids act like idiots either..
- ociris, on 07/16/2008, -5/+4This is an awesome announcement. I just gotta see if they will allow mouse and keyboard and i'll be all over this.
- Tyrghast, on 07/16/2008, -12/+9We're dealing with post-PS3 Sony here, they'll find some way to screw it up.
- apoc06, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2youre confusing it with pre-07 sony. now THOSE guys were a bit of a clusterfuk.
after GDC '07 when they announced home and LBP, you could see a shift away from all that. sony doesnt even seem like the same company anymore; thats a good thing.
- apoc06, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2youre confusing it with pre-07 sony. now THOSE guys were a bit of a clusterfuk.
- airwalkery2k, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6Sure, there are a few PS3 exclusives that made me somewhat interested, but once this comes out--if it is as good as it potentially should be--might make me go out and pony up for a PS3.
- mohsenxp, on 07/16/2008, -4/+10Bring on LittleBigPlanet already! I've been dying for that game! It might be the only game i'll buy this year as I plan to spend the next year or so just creating loads of levels!
- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2008, -8/+2LBP looks lame.
- Gamoc, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2LittleBigPlanet looks damn awesome. Sounds like you can't afford a PS3, to me.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2008, -8/+2LBP looks lame.
- myshl0ng, on 07/16/2008, -9/+3Too bad it won`t be 128 vs 128 but some gimmick 8v8v8v8v8v *****.
I`m hyped as hell, but it will either lag as *****, or be subscription based on good servers.- ippey, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6Have you ever tried getting a squad of 32 people in BF2 to pay attention to a commander? 8v8v8 is the way to go
- Eezyville, on 07/16/2008, -3/+7I wonder if this is capable of going cross-platform. I don't want any more surprises! Keep it on the PS3 Sony.
- ociris, on 07/16/2008, -8/+0If its first party from Sony then it wont be multi. However, if its not, i dont see the reason why it shouldn't ALSO go to the 360. The 360 controller has a more natural feel due to positioning of the left thumb stick than the dualshock/sixaxis (same reason why digital pad on PS3 is more natural than the 360s)... However, if they allow mouse and keyboard, i would definitely buy the PS3 version even if its on my 360.
- Gamoc, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2You can't say the 360's controller is 'more natural', it's a matter of choice. I much prefer the PS3 controller.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2008, -3/+2So then everyone who bought the game could play in one server?
- ociris, on 07/16/2008, -8/+0If its first party from Sony then it wont be multi. However, if its not, i dont see the reason why it shouldn't ALSO go to the 360. - Gonz037, on 07/16/2008, -5/+41They probably should have called it "*****".
- justice7, on 07/16/2008, -2/+14This makes me actually want a PS3. Interesting.
- bdiggitty, on 07/16/2008, -3/+8You know. The concept is cool but what is with all the prerendered stuff. I think they need to ban this. You'd figure after the Killzone 2 fiasco a few years ago that Sony wouldn't be so likely to approve of such footage. I'll have to say just wait and see, before I'm willing to get behind the hype.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/16/2008, -3/+2Pre-rendered stuff from Sony? Nah...
- StolenLamp, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10Dude, have you SEEN the gameplay footage of Killzone 2 (E3'08)? That video you're referring to is pretty much spot on.
- Blandyman, on 07/16/2008, -3/+1No. It was close, and it a good attempt, but it was not what anyone should call "pretty much spot on."
It was 75% of what that pre-rendered video was. And the video was outside. The only thing I saw of the Killzone 2 trailer was in-doors and it looked like any other shooter of this generation.
- Blandyman, on 07/16/2008, -3/+1No. It was close, and it a good attempt, but it was not what anyone should call "pretty much spot on."
- AL7AIR, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1The guys who brought you SOCOM are behind this, and if you look at their latest installment of the series "Confrontation" they are not that far off in the graphics department, the battlefields in that game are just too small to host those 128 vs 128 players.
- StolenLamp, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Actually, they aren't working on the SOCOM series anymore. Confrontation is being developed by Slant Six.
- jasondaemon, on 07/16/2008, -9/+3If this was a PC game I'd be all over it.... but not even this will make me buy a PS3.
- biggbear, on 07/16/2008, -1/+4This sounds awesome, but I'm skeptical about how well it will work. Most people have already pointed out that it is not 128v128, but rather 8v8v8 etc. But Remember that each of those squads of 8 is supposed to have a squad leader that reports to the "General", for lack of a better word, that is the overall leader of all 256. He is supposed to give orders to every squad on his team.
I think this is too ambitious because you will never get all of your 8-man squads to follow along. At least not all 8 people in every squad. There will always be some people who will not do what is best for the team, but rather do what is best for themselves. Anyone who has played any tactical game online will agree to this point.- Gamoc, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4I disagree with the whole people-not-following-orders thing. Ever heard of a clan?
- robEstyles, on 07/16/2008, -7/+9We need to get this on Xbox Live so I can hear 255 people call each other fags or --insert ethnic slur here-- in pre-pubescent voices.
- ryleyleckie, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5agreed
- terencec, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2lets just hope that it'll turn out to be what we expect... or made to expect
- StolenLamp, on 07/16/2008, -3/+6Apparently none of you have played all of the SOCOM games, and seen the horrible glitches and shoddy support/promises that Zipper Interactive promised the whole time. With several missed release dates involving map packs, and never really fixing the large glitches and bugs, I had to give up the series, even though it remains my favorite. That's why SOCOM: Confrontation (coming out in october) is so promising, because they pulled Zipper from the series.
Long story short, ***** Zipper.- Gamoc, on 07/16/2008, -2/+2...The previous 2 Socom games were on the PS2, how do you propose for them to fix it, genius?
I say that, but I played both and saw no glitches at all, so I think you're just talking bollocks.- BearinG, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2PS2 had patches too.. genius.
- tpahornet, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2I hear ya! The last two games for the PS2 held all kinds of promises but Zipper failed to deliver. Zipper can suck my nut! I love the socom games but with the lag, broken mic's and lack of customer support from Zipper has lost me as a customer. Hint: With Zipper rent it before you buy it!
How could they fix a game on PS2 you ask? Ever heard of patches? Zipper brought them out way too late and rarely told the fixes that it incorporated.
And let me remind ya'll about the map packs for Socom. How many were we promised and how many did they deliver?- Gamoc, on 07/17/2008, -2/+0You can patch a DVD with a PS2?
No hardrive?
I think I'm missing something, explain please. - BearinG, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Nothing to explain.. you probably never played online with your PS2.. there were patches for some online games.
- Gamoc, on 07/17/2008, -2/+0You can patch a DVD with a PS2?
- Juntistik, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2I remember in Socom 2 people would glitch through the walls and shoot at you. ***** pissed me off.
It was never fixed. :(

- latova, on 07/16/2008, -3/+5Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "*****"
- Kenzan, on 07/16/2008, -2/+3What is hoped is that everyone will act as a squad does in real tactics.
What I expect is that you'll have 256 people running around in mad fashion like some giant, twisted Deathmatch.
What'll be the fun in that?
No more hunting down arch enemies..it's be just blasting random unknown people every time. - ValDeV, on 07/16/2008, -8/+9Anyone know where the xbox 360 got its name? Its because 360 days is the most one will last without breaking.
- Ottogustavo, on 07/16/2008, -3/+3That's clever.

- Spire3660, on 07/16/2008, -5/+0AS I said in my original comment, I LIKED it on n64, but i prefer to bring my own setup for on site multiplayer now that screens are cheap and light. I attended alot of LANs back in the day, hauling 19" CRTs around to my friends house weekly. Also i said IMHO..... i didnt say i spoke for anyone but me. Split screen is ok, but i prefer to have my own screen if feasible as that is what i became accustomed to and the logistics of it arent outrageous.

- Raethar, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1i was about to say the same exact thing lol

LLDAG,
wait....
- SSCrow, on 07/16/2008, -1/+5Large Action Game?
- CommanderEFG, on 07/16/2008, -5/+3I'm going to be realistic here and say something that not to many people are mentioning, LAG! What worries me is the sheer amount of people in a game such as this can create some serious lag issues.
Take something like World of Warcraft for example. From personal experience I remember walking into Stormwind, Ironforge, or Shattrath and lagging like no other because I had 50+ people in the same area I'm looking at all at once.
Also did anyone remember that game for the Xbox, I believe it was called Delta Force, which could have 50 people play at once. I rented it and did enjoy it, up until more then 40 people where on the same server. Then it would crash.- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Your local console would really only need to keep the people in their general area up to date. It's not like you would need constant, full info for all 256 players at all times.
- SSCrow, on 07/16/2008, -6/+2So will it be monthly payments? That sounds sort of gay for an FPS.
- holzp, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2That would be the Fantastic Action Game. Prob the sequel.
- phinn, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Na, Sony doesn't nickle and dime you to death like Microsoft, and I'm not just talking about the 3 version of Xbox console and Xbox Live but also the 9 versions of Windows Vista and 7 version of Office.

This is "massive" therefore Sony will inevitably ***** it up.
