- Woodygenius, on 10/11/2007, -7/+38That's pretty lame, guess I'm on the clock to buy my 60 GB before August (wonder if that will squash the rumor stating the further price cut by November?).
- bmurph83, on 10/11/2007, -8/+72I will not get one because of this. I was thinking about getting one after the price drop, but now I won't support a company which screws it's customers.
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -45/+11How are they screwing their customers? It's like car dealers offering lower prices on late models.
- Kles, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Late models, which are in great abundance, whilst having multiple generations to give buyers with lesser budgets a choice in getting an older, cheaper model if they so wish.
Sony is not giving their customers a choice. It's the most expensive model or bust.- DangerMouse9, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2Boo-*****-hoo. Don't get one then.
- acurism, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2 I am almost positive that after the 60 gig sells out and their are no more available, the 80 gig will be brought down to the 499 price point.
They are not going to admit this because it is stupid from a business standpoint. Just Days before the 499 price drop they denied it because until it is "Actually" in effect, they will never "come clean and say "In a week the PS3 will sell for 499, but until then you have to pay 599". This would cause to many people to wait for the price drop.
Diggers need to stop jumping the gun and learn the in's and out's of business. I am sure in August or September of this year their will be another Digg front page headline saying..."Breaking:80 Gig now 499!"
- Microdot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2story is bogus as per joystiq
http://digg.com/playstation_3/60GB_PS3_NOT_OVER_IN_US - Nobi-Wan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The story isn't bogus, Microdot. They're just doing this in Europe first and inevitably going to be doing this to the US. They launched the 80gig PS3 in Europe, first, too. Did that mean Sony wasn't going to launch the same system in the US? Why would they cancel out the 60gig version of the PS3 for only part of the world?
- Kles, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Late models, which are in great abundance, whilst having multiple generations to give buyers with lesser budgets a choice in getting an older, cheaper model if they so wish.

and I'm starting to like Microsoft - sure they just admitted most of the hardware has a design flaw - but free 3 year warranties!! I can play my 360 24/7 and if it fries I get another!- Lawr, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2no, if it fries, you send it in to get it repaired.
what you "get" is a 3-4 week period which could go to up to 6 weeks because of the increased number of 360s being sent in since this announcement. - JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3And what happens in 3 years and a day?
- Lawr, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2no, if it fries, you send it in to get it repaired.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11@robot 3yr warranty is not a general warranty it only covers one issue the red ring of death, any other issues over heating, freezing, DVD scratching etc are all still 1 year.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19*you're*
- xrisnothing, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20Neither will I. I was planning on buying one next week, but now that's off. ***** Sony. I guess I'm still not ready.
- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Why? I do not get this. The 60 gig is a better choice. Why not get one now instead of later? And it is speculated that the 60 gigs will sell out at the end of july. Is this really true?

- digitaldivinci, on 10/11/2007, -12/+0I'd be willing to wager that the rumor about a price cut about something being removed from the shelves will die.
- cfulp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Sony already confirmed that there was a price cut, and that they're going to stop producing the 60gb version.
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -13/+8Wait... maybe THIS is the marketing ploy. Maybe this announcement is trying to jump-start sales of the $499 60GB model (as if the price drop and 5 Blu-Ray movie deal wasn't enough), and when August comes around with the 80GB, they just happen to continue selling the 60GB version.
- quarkie, on 10/11/2007, -11/+0No. having only a package to sell your console at this point in the console-wars (i.e. after sega vs nintendo) is commercial suicide. Prediction: They are dropping the model and will have just an 80 GB model with/out a game for $500 or a 100 GB model w/ a game for $600. Hence same price points as before, with better features.

- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6It was actually a pretty big, stupid, and unnecessary risk on Sony's part. Microsoft is determined to be competitive. This is evident throughout the company's history. With the kind of money they have, it's not hard to toss out a price drop to undercut one of their major competitors. If Microsoft had actually gone through with it, Sony could've been hurting even more. Just a guess on my part, bud I'd say this move may be because the margin on 80GB hard drives might be lower than it was when they started manufacturing, and possibly even lower than the 60 GB were. It might be cheaper for them to manufacture an 80GB system over a 60 GB system, and it makes it look like a selling point. That, combined with bad press surrounding the 360's reliability might've been enough to convince them it was a good time to risk this, but really, nothing has changed, and unless PS3 gamers are doing HDD installs, the regular gamer that plans on buying a PS3 wouldn't notice a difference between 60 and 80 GB.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yeah... Except the real reason there's a limited supply of 60GB PS3s is that Seagate isn't making that 60GB HDD anymore and instead is making 80GBs.
So they're basically getting 80GB at the same (or at least very close to) the same price they were getting the 60GBs at.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yeah... Except the real reason there's a limited supply of 60GB PS3s is that Seagate isn't making that 60GB HDD anymore and instead is making 80GBs.
- brianjlowry, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Maybe if they discontinue the PS3 in general, they can get people to buy up their stock as a "collector's item".

NEO-GEO!!!!@3134325426873525.
- Maarek, on 10/23/2007, -1/+18More importantly this is a downgrade as the current 60GB version actually has the Emotion Engine chips for true PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility. Let's see.....20GB more storage or the ability to play 99% of my already purchased PS2 and PS1 games? Kind of a no-brainer for me (given my collection of games) and the $100 inventory sell off makes it even more of a no brainer.
- RooDoG, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Sorry for Comment Abuse but listen... This is the SCE"E" (Europe president talking here). I am going to wait till I her official word from the President of the company or at least SCE"A". If it follows through, I hate Sony forever and will recommend nobody to buy their products ever again.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Maybe Capcom was right maybe they will be announcing a second price drop, but it will be for the 80gb near the holidays. That's the only thing I can think of. Or maybe that's why they kept denying denying the price drop. Maybe they wanted to keep the $599 price and just add the 80gb and bundled game. Either way people are getting a better deal then when I got mine.
- cphelps, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Why would anyone buy one after a dumbass stunt like this? Don't support companies who like to pass things off on you, thinking you are an idiot.

Whoever's in charge of marketing at sony needs to fired.
So basically, this is a one month price drop and then people are forced to pay $599 again.- aliengoods, on 10/11/2007, -6/+34It's better than that. It's a lame upgrade. 20GB of extra hard drive space. Why not charge $100 less and let people put their own hard drives in.
- JimXugle, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31I'm no Sony fanboy (who is?) but I thought the PS3's hard drive was intended to be user replaceable?
- pegisys, on 10/11/2007, -6/+32It is, so it makes the new sku even more lame. I'm willing to bet that Sony is getting a better deal on the 80GB drives and instead of just phasing out the 60's and replacing them with 80GB systems they thought the could get some good PR with a arbitrary price drop
I said this would happen a few days, and got dugg down like crazy. - jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1@JimXugle You can also use any standard USB harddrive or flashdrive.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@pegisys: The 60GB drives Sony was using aren't going to be made anymore and that model drive is being replaced by an 80GB one, so Sony is trying to spin this as a "price drop" and a "new SKU", where it's just really a capacity switch.

The 80 gig will then be moved down to $499. 80 gig drives are actually cheaper in bulk than 60 gig drives now.
Of course Sony is going to deny that the 80 will drop in price once they have sold the remaining 60 gig models. Every console company denies price drops until they happen.- username9000, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6ahahahhaahahaha.

- vdgmr1213, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3Sony hasn't been calling it a price drop all along. Even if you don't think its worth it, mathematically its more of a value. That doesn't mean you won't feel screwed every 6 months when a new PS3 model comes out, though. I agree with aliengoods in that they need a model without a hard drive all together.
- Konstantino, on 10/11/2007, -2/+51This explains why Jack Tretton kept disregarding the so-called "price drop" in all his interviews and kept saying "we don't look at it as a price-drop, but as the release of the 80 gig Play Station 3". Now we know why he said that.
- demodawid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Oh, but if you accept to get screwed by sony, they give you a free game! and 20 more gigs!
Great move, sony. I was beginning to like you. - wicketr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Now that people have "tasted" the $499 version, no one will be willing to pay $599 anymore. This could go down as one of the most retarded moves by the gaming industry ever.
Sony Exec: "Let's take the most expensive gaming console, which is out of reach for most people to consider buying, add a tiny bit more to it, and then re-release it at the original price so it's still out of reach. BRILLIANT!"- Rovient, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree about the 'tasting' comment. For the first time this week I was eager to buy a PS3; I just had to wait a few more days and we'd find out how much the EU version was going to set us back. To have "no price reduction" paired with an offload of outdated hardware is an insult to the EU fans. Who the hell wants motorstorm, Genji and bloody ridge racer when Heavenly sword, MGS4 and others are on the horizon. Bloody poor customer relations move.
- M3RCINIAN, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Alphabet, no, he should be given a PAY RISE. Think about it. Customers think "Oh *****, GOTTA BUY ONE NOW!". When the stock runs out Sony promptly dropepd the price of the 80Gb model. Win. That is what they will undoubtedly do.
- ericrous, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4More likely they're ending the 60 GB line because they are tired of paying for that emotion chip and want to go with the model that's cheaper to manufacture and that they can charge more for.
- BurntToast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's exactly what it is. Now all we're going to be left with is a gimped PS3 that's more expensive and comes with Motorstorm... which by the way sold over 1 million copies!
DRINK!

why do people even care? - swiftekho, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I know, it's stupid... You think that Sony finally did something right for once, then this comes up.
Edit: This also begs the question, will Sony be losing money on the new priced 80GB PS3 or were they screwing people over with the same price 60GB one? I'd also be pissed right now if I had a 60GB (Pre-price cut) that I bought just a couple weeks ago.- toonworld, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4in most stores, if there is a price drop that occurs within 30 days of something that you purchased, you can show your original invoice and they will refund the difference. Futureshop has a price guarantee like that. In Canada, I'm pretty sure that there's a law that also protects consumers on price drops right after you bought something.
- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1How is it not? the 60 gig used to be 600 now it is 500. The differences between the 2 are very minute and in most peoples case the 60 gig is a better deal. That means go pick up a 60 gig.

well, maybe mgs might still come on 360- mallardtheduck, on 10/11/2007, -9/+53You may have a point there... Maybe the "price drop" was just a ploy to get an exclusive deal on MGS.
Goes something like this:
1. 60GB HDDs are becoming less common (cheap), so Sony decides to up the PS3 to 80GB.
2. Konami say that the PS3 is too expensive, want a price drop before they will sign.
3. Sony decides that since they are refreshing stock anyway, they may as well drop the price on the old 60GB PS3s to satisfy Konami.
4. Konami sign.
5. Sony announce that the 60GB model is being discontinued (as was their intention all along).
6. Sony Profit!- IndigoMoss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Why is he being dugg down, that's a very valid point. I'm sure it's not just for MGS, but it would meet Konami's requirements, and then they wouldn't lose one of their biggest exclusives.
- samdu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It doesn't work like that. Sony is probably getting a better price on the 80GB drives now. And the 60GB units are already in the channel (read: paid for). This is all really a non-story. The 60GB is $499, the 80GB LIMITED EDITION is $599. When the 60GBs are gone, the 80GB will lose the Motorstorm pack-in and drop to $499 or maybe even $459. People are making a mountain out of a mole hill out of this.
- temporalbassist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Exactly. All that matters now, is that they make some solid games. Then people will feel a bit more justified in budgeting it into their lives regardless of price. Myself included.
- ScarlemNocturne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I, too, agree that that is a valid point. Not to mention the hive minds of others who see this as a "price cut". But, as it seems, it is a video game system remake of the Picard Maneuver
- chopsticks765, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2For reference, are you referring to Picard's battle tactic made famous while in command of the Stargazer, or Picard's tendency to pull his uniform shirt down? Both known as the "Picard Maneuver" and both equally badass.

- Vicujozobenaxod, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3BREAKING: It's not ripping off if they sell out of the model that got a price cut.
I love how so many people post up how much they hate Sony for doing things like this, when most of them don't even want a PS3. It's like, why do you care?- Pikachelsea, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It's like, because they deserve to be called out for treating their actual fans like crap, that's why. I can't believe how you people keep gobbling this BS up.
- StateofMind09, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How the hell are they ripping anyone off here? You buy the 60GB at a lowered price, or buy the 80GB with a game at the original price.
Does this mean I don't get a t-shirt like all of the cool kids?
- omygroin, on 10/11/2007, -25/+12at first I thought its a ridiculous move too, but after I realised its probably a shrewd business decision. think about it, they drop the price of 60 gig to entice people to buy after a great E3.
Then they say the 60 gig will be phased out by the end of the month, this forces people who wanted a PS3 to run out and grab one while its still at $499. Thus, they were able to clear out their stale stock of 60 gigs sitting on shelves quicker.
This is called killing 2 birds with one stone, well more like 3 LOL. Its genious I think. The sole purpose of the 80 gig motorstorm bundle is only to make people think the 60 gig is the better deal, so they can sell more and sell them faster get rid of the 60 gig and also get the news out to everyone that the PS3 is now cheaper for those waiting for one.
Then when the 60 gig is sold out, they'll replace it with the 80 gig but without the motorstorm bundle so it will only cost $499. How? because the only difference is the 60 gig and 80 gig hardrive, which Sony probably pays the same or even less for it now. they probably got a better deal on the 80 gig than with the 60 or maybe the manufacturer just stop making 60 gigs.
while in our fanboy world it probably seems stupid, with people jumping on anything that seems negative. but in reality its a pretty good move business wise- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I don't think that anyone is really debating whether it's a good business/financial move just for gamers, as in, us, it's kind of lame. :o
- untzboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yeah. 20 more gigs is lame
- jordanlund, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12"because the only difference is the 60 gig and 80 gig hardrive"
And the fact that the 60GB version has the EE chip and hardware backwards compatability with the PS2 instead of the software compatability that's on the 80GB version.- untzboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1this would have happened eventually on the 60 gig version, they said so themselves
- AJH16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1In their warped minds this probably actually makes sense. They believe that if people think they won't be able to get a version with the EE chip and the price discount, then they will be more likely to run out to the store and get one now if they had been waiting. I know that atleast in my case, the announcement they would be taking out the EE chip got me to go and pick one up. (But I had no PS2, so I really wanted the compatibility.)
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I don't think that anyone is really debating whether it's a good business/financial move just for gamers, as in, us, it's kind of lame. :o
- mokkos, on 10/11/2007, -7/+111Just letting everyone know, 80GB is rumoured to not have the emotion engine, which means backwards compatibility is crippled from 95% to about 70%. Get it while you still can to save 100 bucks and still get the EE.
- dgblackout, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12put the saved $100 into buying a sata 2.5 laptop drive and upgrade it, you can, so why not?
- Namrok, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15It's pretty insane of them to gimp the backwards compatibility so much. Especially since odds are, I'll mostly be playing PS2 games on it since the PS3 only has one or two games out that are worth playing.
- DMHero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Well at least you'll know how the UK feels. Oh apart from we're getting charged double still.
- Sturmgeschutz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Very true. Still $850 for the 60gig and still a lousy game catalogue. What the hell's going to happen if Microsoft release the 'Falcon' remodel at a substantially lower price? The only neg for the XB360 is the reliability. Its got a stunning game line-up, top on-line service and loads of support. On top of that, you can get one for half the price (even seen a core for £149!!). Who the hell is buying these things?
- DMHero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Well at least you'll know how the UK feels. Oh apart from we're getting charged double still.
- Kles, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19I have a friend who works with Sony in Europe and he says that backwards compatibility without the emotion engine is far, far worse than 70%.
- Antimatter3009, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Or buy a PS2 and save 500 bucks and still get the EE.
Or just don't buy it and save all your money. - lostboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1The truth is that the backwards compatibility is crippled because it's emulated at software rather than hardware level. so yeah, it's a ***** joke.
- hater2win, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1The 360 uses software emulation in every 360, if anything, backwards compatibility will not change too much.
- DarkPrince11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1360 games and Xbox games don't differ that much...so software compatibility is okay...but a lot of PS2 games required the emotion engine to run successfully....
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yay at Direct3D API!
- toonworld, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5How about this: I won't get it at all because I am sick and tired of Sony thinking they can do whatever the hell they want! They are idiots!!
I used to be a fan of the PS consoles. I was actually looking forward to the release of the PS3, but they had to go frack it all up! Then I heard about the price drop and I was actually considering it until they came up with another genius way to frack it all up again! Here's a few reasons why I will NEVER buy the PS3:
1. The launch strategy:
They decided to make 2 versions of the PS3. WHY?? Why not just make 1 version? Why the hell did they force the Blu Ray on that system? The games that came out were not even on Blu Ray discs! This made the system more expensive for no good reason! People are just starting to get TV screens that can actually do 1080p so why the frack did they force it on us? Oh and the number of consoles they produced wasn't good enough for the launch and I think they did it on purpose just so the news could report that all PS3s were sold out on the first day. A very BAD marketing ploy. Gamers/consumers are not dumb!
2. I'm still pissed at Sony for the rootkit fiasco.
I didn't get affected by it personally, but I'm pissed that they had the "genius" idea in the first place. Here in Canada, it's legal to make a copy of music you purchased as a backup. I payed for it, I shouldn't have to pay again and again for it. I bought it, I have the right to do with it as I see fit as long as I don't violate any copyright laws.
3. Still pissed at the DRM frackup
"Oooh... let's make DVDs which won't work on certain older perfectly LEGITIMATE DVD players including SONY DVD players because we're afraid that someone will try to copy the content! YEAH!! Genius!" You goddam idiots! Let me translate: "Let's FORCE people to use newer DVD players, they need to upgrade anyways, who cares if they have to spend extra money on new DVD players? Who cares if there are people out there that prefer to watch their movies on their PCs that run Linux?"
I could go on and on with a bring at least a dozen more points, but I'd basically be repeating what others haver already said out there. Sony used to be a synonym of quality products, but unfortunately that was a very long time ago. I've boycotted Sony. I never thought I'd say this, but Hello Xbox 360!- zomglolz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@toonworld:
About your reasons, while argument 2,3 are nothing more than general Sony hatred and not directed at their product, i should not answer to them, but i will.
1)Launch strategy
- 2 Versions - This is actually beneficial to you if you are smart. Having 2 versions they can satisfy those customers that don't need much space and those that need it, while make quite a bit of money on that. Now most smart people would but a 20gb version then get a much bigger hdd themselves and save 100$. And Sony will make more money on the people that bought the 60gb version. This only helps the smart customer and Sony can benefit on the less informed ones. Thus win-win situation.
- BluRay , this is actually a good move as well, while it is mostly a strategical move to push BluRay, it had to be done. After all didn't MS give a HD-DVD player to the Xbox360(optional though). They could have made it optional, but i think that actually including bluray in more systems gives them the advantage in the format war. Either way BluRay is a techincally superior format in terms of storage and codecs supported, so i have nothing against them trying to get BluRay to win.
- Consumers are dumb in general. How do you think companies make so much money? ( You will not belive the crap companies sell nowadays and get away with it. Of course legally. ) There is always a loser and a winner. Stay informed and you can win =)
2.Not buying a companies product no matter how good it is because they messed up somewhere in the past?
While i can't say i like them including a rootkit in some audio cds, i don't find it that condemnable, for one it wasnt necesarry for playback i think and secondly it doesn't truly prevent anyone from 'backing' up. You can still enforce your fair use rights, they just made it a bit harder.
On an unrelated note, rootkits and what you call rootkit-like tech is being used by many commercial apps nowdays for various purposes, Sony was just one that got cought. If you ever do random security audits/ reverse engineering of various products that are out nowadays, you'll see countless rootkits being used to enforce DRM in many products. Sony was just unfortunate to get cought, it's not that uncommon as you might think to use rootkit tech for DRM, not that its a good way of protecting IP.
3. Judging a product because of something unrelated the company did again, eh?
- Movie companies push for more DRM, Sony will agree of course, it only brings them more money from both sides. Both the movie companies and the consumer(sell more dvd player). Yes, its idiotic as all DRM can be broken if someone wants to, but it also brings them more money. It won't stop people on Linux anyways, since the DRM will most likely be broken soon enough( you had to break it to play old DVDs anyhow! )
I found your last comment regarding the Xbox360 incredibly funny as Microsoft pushes a lot more DRM tech and things much more scarier than rootkit tech(where the OS is the rootkit in a way,but then rootkit tech are nothing more than altering OS functions to stay invisible and control the behavior of various APIs), on another note the actual xbox360 is much more DRMed than PS3, as you can't run non-MS/non-signed code on it, unless you somehow replace the actual xbox360 CPU with one that doesnt have a RSA key hardcoded into it. The PS3 on the other hand allows you to run any code you make(homebrew) as long as it doesnt your features of their new graphics chipset, thus it allows you infinitely more usage power than the Xbox360. As for the Wii, well you can do whatever you want with that one :)- Rfriaz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I CANNOT CLIMB THE WALLS!
- zomglolz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@toonworld:
- BurntToast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's not rumored... it's true. The 80GBs that we're getting is similar in hardware to the gimped (ie lack of Emotion Engine) that Europe got shoved down their throat.
- samdu, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Actually it goes from about 99% to about 88%. And that will only get better with firmware updates. No biggie.
- Darren07, on 10/11/2007, -6/+88Turns out it was just another marketing trick by Sony. Sure if you want your cheaper 60 GB PS3, now is the time to get it, you have about two weeks left. Then it’s only the 80 GB, $600 console left, and the Motorstorm bundle is limited time only.
So we’re back where we started, only 20 GB more (the difference between a 60 GB and 80 GB hard drive is something like $10 in manufacturing costs). Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.- bovester, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Actually it's about $3.50 in manufacturing costs.
- MrLunar, on 10/11/2007, -12/+8Let me just correct your first sentance:

- NeMoD, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Now Sony is going to laugh at how many people rush out and buy their 60GB model before they are all gone.
- JimmyJJWalker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not accurate, the 20GB model also lacked memory card readers.
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -3/+74Funny that. I was arguing with a friend of mine over whether the introduction of the newer 80GB model (and thus the drop in price for the 60GB) was a "price drop" or just a reorganisation of pricing.
I was arguing that it was a price drop as the exact same model was now selling for less than it did a week ago (in the US at least) irrespective of whether there was a new SKU or not.
Today I find out they are discontinuing the 60GB, so I have been proven horribly wrong.
And to make matters worse, PAL don't get a genuine price drop, we get a new bundle. And WORSE STILL this bundle's price is justified by 2 games + extra controller. Now why are Sony including an extra controller? To offload stock as they prepare for the release of a controller with rumble support!
I don't like this one bit!- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This story is not true. The 60gb lives on and isn't being phased out.

This is about the lamest marketing strategy I've ever heard. It's basically a scare tactic.- mattyice11, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Why buy one now? The controllers are gimped, and you know the ones with rumble will be coming out shortly after.
Wait until the 80GB console ships with rumble, and it drops to $499. I think this happens before MGS4 comes out. - thefaithful, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The cheap one? Which one is the cheap one?

- OJdidntdoIT, on 10/11/2007, -21/+9Not a fanboy of anything, but Xbox 360 wins this generation console war. See ya in 3 years Sony. No hard feelings.
- Pentoast, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I'm not a fanboy either, but with sony giving us the bait and switch with pricing and other failures, and microsoft saying every Xbox 360 made in the past nine months could possibly fail, My vote goes for nintendo. They are still sold out everywhere, and beside the fact that people throw their controllers at the tv, I haven't heard any bad press.
- george2gfm, on 10/11/2007, -11/+7if the wii was only next gen....
- Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3If only it had games that didn't suck.
- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2except nintendo offers little to many current gamers. Plus the still prevalent stocking problem.
- IndigoMoss, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Yeah it definitely sounds like Nintendo has a grasp on being the leader in this generation. All they really have to do is get some more games released that hardcore gamers want to play. Madden on the Wiii is amazing, and so are a lot of other games, but there are more BS games than there are actual games that a gamer would want to play. At least Warioware,Paper Mario, and Zelda are already on the system, to give me something to do when I can get my hands on one.
- ericrous, on 10/11/2007, -9/+6Nintendo is fine for what it is. But what it is is NOT a serious console. It's a novelty item--a glorified toy (sorry Nintendo fans). It's NOT a serious next-generation console. Fine for grandma and mom and dad--useless for a gamer.
- Durinthal, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3"It's a novelty item--a glorified toy"
Isn't that what all game consoles are? Isn't that what they're *supposed* to be? - cfulp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You might try playing it say stuff like that. I have a Wii and 360, and to say that the wii is useless to a gamer is just stupid. Have you even played Zelda?
- Durinthal, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3"It's a novelty item--a glorified toy"
- DarKnight90, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1The Wii is alright but Nintendo is just not paying attention to the hardcore gamer this time around. They would rather make stuff that non gamers would play. non gamers + hardcore gamers looking for a cheap second console = the most sales. But that doesn't mean they are winning. I think XBox has it this round, I had some hopes for Sony but their just making the wrong choices right now. Once the XBox gets through this hardware issue they will pretty much have it in the bag.
- george2gfm, on 10/11/2007, -11/+7if the wii was only next gen....
- smergs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"See ya in 3 years Sony. No hard feelings."
You mean 9 years. The PS3 is going to last at least 9 more years!!! Haven't you heard Sony say that 100 times?
I for one will stick with my XBOX 360 for gaming. When I'm ready to jump into the HD video format wars I'll buy a stand alone player. I'll probably just stick with an up-converting DVD player for a lot longer though.
- Pentoast, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I'm not a fanboy either, but with sony giving us the bait and switch with pricing and other failures, and microsoft saying every Xbox 360 made in the past nine months could possibly fail, My vote goes for nintendo. - Alphateam, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25FFS Sony.
Do they have a mole from Nintendo or Microsoft in their company that is purposely driving their gaming division in to the ground? They were on thin ice as it was. Someone said that the HDD manufacturer doesn't make the 60GB model any more and are selling the 80GB at the same price. So this is just because they can't get them anyway. So they pack in a game for a little while to give the customer a little KY Jelly before then bend them over and rape them. Thanks Sony. I can't wait for the PS4.- BentSea, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Wow. I like how you act as though you HAVE to buy one. How about rather than getting raped, you maybe don't buy it?
- ayrkain, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18Does anyone actually think they'll sell out as fast as that? C'mon people, I own one and I don't believe that...
- Rioracer916, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2After my first PSP got stolen I found a "suitable replacement" sitting on the shelf at Game Crazy. The store only had 3 "New" PSP boxes and they were all the entertainment pack promotion from over A YEAR AGO. Yes folks a YEAR ago. Sales clerk was surprised I wanted a PSP. I was happy I got one with a very old firmware. A mutually beneficial exchange followed.
With that said. I can't imagine the PS3 selling faster than the PSP. There will be a lot of 60GB PS3s around after the holiday rush. This is just a scare tactic. The backwards compatibility is non-upgradable, but the hard drive is. I'd rather take the system model with the real value, the 60GB.

- brstilson, on 10/11/2007, -18/+2"A new 80GB model will come bundled with a copy of Motorstorm and will retail for USD 599."
So they're replacing it with an 80 GB model for the same price. I fail to see the problem here.- Retnuh730, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Maybe the fact that the PS3 is 499 now would help you see things clearer.
- Sturmgeschutz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3The problem is the damn thing is wildly overpriced and instead of genuinely cutting prices, they've used a supplier product change (in this case 80gb drive for the same cost as a 60gb thats discontinued) to tout the impression they have. Likewise here in the UK. Bundle the games to shift the 60giggers and old joypads and then, surprise surprise, release the 80gig nearer xmas and keep the price the same again. Its a massive marketing scam.
- DangerMouse9, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2If it's overpriced don't buy one. Don't sit here and bawl and complain and ridicule Sony for not making a piece of ***** system you could afford. Are you going to quit being a whiny little bitch anytime soon?- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Thank you. What point is there complaining about something you are not interested in? Fanboyism. It is a word that has gained greater meeting in this generation of gaming. if you were interested you would get on now? It is completely stupid about complaining that this price drop really isn't a price drop because of the new SKU. Please don't be stupid people. You can swap out the HDD at any time and if you want the hardware BC the 60 is a better option. So this is a price drop because the 80 gig is less appealing and if you REALLY wanted a PS3 the best time to get one is now.
The only people I can fathom trying to argue how there is no price drop about this is really fanboys. - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1People are pissed off because they had the change to get a nice console (WiFi, 60GB, wireless controllers, et al) for $100 less than before. - yongjoon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I think there's only so much marketing can do to sell a $600 product. even with the ridiculous hype that the iphone had, the reality is there's just not that many people that can afford to spend that kind of money even if they wanted one.
- Davidleewhite, on 10/11/2007, -9/+8no korkmaz...sony is worse then stupid, they're greedy asses. They just wanted to take you're money as fast as possible without any consideration to anyones intellegence. - IndigoMoss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4When Nintendo releases a new version of something, they usually release it for a reason. Take for example the old school GBA. That thing was pretty hard to play unless under direct light. So halfway into it's life-cycle the completely revamped it and made it a lot more playable. They also did the same thing for the DS. I didn't like the regular DS's feel at all and the screen wasn't bright enough. Nintendo realized that and then they came out with the super bad ass DS lite, at a very reasonable $130 dollars.
- RandomGuySteve, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0It seems that they should have realized their mistakes the first time, and I imagine that they did. But they wanted to have 2 versions because you're stupid enough to pay for the same thing twice.
- copper7op, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4nintendo tatics? wtf does that mean? nintendo has been great for backwords compatibility! look at mario all-stars
- shartman, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1Who cares!
buried - bobman2007, on 10/11/2007, -19/+11"WTF Sony, first you lower the price, then you just stop making 606 gig models?"
When did Sony start making 606 gig models? And I thought 60 gigs was enough? I must have this 606 gig PS3! - Error601, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35That's a complex concept we in the industry call a "clearance sale."
- lobbster, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1i thought that the 60 gig is there best selling model
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7buried for improper word usage
- aegis9975, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2Personally, I think they are going to re-introduce the 20GB model at $399 for the holiday season.
- Alphateam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Why would they?
- IndigoMoss, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Because maybe then someone would buy it.
- Alphateam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Why would they?
- matito10, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9They're just going to re-release the 60 gig mode in November and hope that no one remembered it was already here.
- bwishey, on 10/11/2007, -6/+39+1 Digg for the story.
-1 Digg for use of "BREAKING".
Bonus points for... I don't know know. I give this half a Digg.
Does Sony even know what they're doing anymore? Are their decisions formed by a dart board?- koonchu, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3It's called "panic."
- IndigoMoss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's actually Manatees.
- 70ny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16I wish that BREAKING stories would automatically get buried.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8In journalistic terms "breaking" means that a story is in progress and is being told as details emerge - i.e., "breaking" a story into pieces. This story isn't breaking. It's a fact being stated. Now it's done being stated. Ergo, not breaking. Buried.
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I think they are using the jump to conclusions board to make all executive decisions.
- koonchu, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3It's called "panic."
- DMHero, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Wow talk about whining. I wish I could pick up an 80gig with motostorm for 300 quid.
- mrjole, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7I am now officialy ashamed to own one.
Shame on you Sony. - darlok, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11seems a tad odd, i'll wait for official word. i would also be curious to know the true amount of stock left. i can understand not making the 20/60 gig units moving forward, but i would assume that there must be at least a mil units left...
- dodgyd55, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1is this so people will run out thinking they might not get one at a discount price?
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -17/+11Ah, I see:
"SCEE president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will no longer be available in the US after stock sells out - which he predicts will occur by the end of the month."
See that phrase "he predicts". That means he's guessing. Usually digg reading comprehension failure. People making fools of themselves again.- drunken0monkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11It appears that while we may be fools, you lack understanding of the english language. The 'predicts' part only applies to the time they will run out of 60GB models. According to that statement, he's quite sure about the 60GB model not being continued.
- munter1942, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1He is predicting that the PS3 units will sell out by the end of the month, he can't exactly predict to the second
Usually digg reading comprehension failure. People making fools of themselves again LOLZZZZZZ - Altanar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You're only talking about the when right? He isn't guessing on that they'll stop selling it. From the interview:
gamesindustry.biz: How concerned are you about possible criticisms that you should have given European consumers what SCEA has given US consumers, i.e. the option to pay a lower price?
David Reeves: Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game. All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.
gamesindustry.biz: So once the 60GB is gone, that will be the end of the 60GB then?
David Reeves: In America, yes. - Leo55, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1well,
there is no need to "predict" if it will sell out by the end of the month or not coz IT WILL after this news breaks. - Error601, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Uh, no. He predicts they won't make anymore and they will sell out. Yes, it's a poorly written article.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23I can't believe they'd be this stupid. This can't be true. I'm a big PS3 fan, but this is just the dumbest thing they could do. Then to RUIN their fantastic E3 showing with a nuclear bomb like this...what idiots.
- ayrkain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2To some degree, I think this is SCEE trying to rain on SCEA's parade. The divisions seem to be sabotaging each other for some reason.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Turns out this wasn't true. Thank God, they would have to be CRAZY to drop the 60gb model now, and it turns out they are not crazy.
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/sony-says-60gb-is-not-over-in-us/- tracespeck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Based on his comment "ample supply" sounded like a huge backstock rather then continued production. I think the story is true.
- username9000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3This is funny.
- srosebush, on 10/23/2007, -6/+5I would love one of those 606 GB models.
- Sturmgeschutz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20The whole PS3 product cycle has been an outright debacle. The usual lies upon lies in the release run-up, followed by high-prices, a poor game catalogue and marketing disasters.
I don't believe i've ever seen such a lead in a consumer segment squandered in the way that the PS3 has done so to the PS2's market. Even Nintendos market decline was gradual over several generations from the NES to the Gamecube.
Now they think everybody is stupid. Absolutely contemptible company.- niceyuk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"I don't believe i've ever seen such a lead in a consumer segment squandered in the way that the PS3 has done so to the PS2's market"
Well Sony is very getting good at losing markets they own, they lost the whole portable "walkman" market to Apples iPod....
- niceyuk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"I don't believe i've ever seen such a lead in a consumer segment squandered in the way that the PS3 has done so to the PS2's market"
- LucianValentine, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Either the head of Sony marketing is a pure genius making some killer long term plan or a Bush-grade idiot who'll run their gaming department into the ground. Either way... we either get cheaper stuff and better games in the hopefully not too distant future or the entertainment of watching another dumb ass corporation crumble through sheer greed, ignorance and stupidity. Fun times! :D
- Davidleewhite, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5error601 you're trying to hard to be smart haha, he only predicted WHEN they run now, but its def. that they will run out and once they do they will be gone and we will be right back where we started, the "whining" as you call it is about sony's underhanded tactics in trying to sell they're sinking ship of a console. They cant just cut the price and say hey...enjoy our system now 100 bucks cheaper, they have to do something like this and screw us over once again.. typical moron trying to sound above us and trying to hard to sound smart
- atomsforpeace, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7you call him stupid yet you're not smart enough to reply to his comment?
- BobsYourUncle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31How do people this incompetent keep their jobs? It boggles my mind. If any one of us were that consistent in getting the company bad press, we'd be gone in a heartbeat. I don't have one iota of marketing experience and I would have known that wouldn't be an announcement you make after the best E3 in a while.
Every time I think about getting a PS3, I get kicked in the balls. They're alienating the very people who _want_ to like the system. - Daveecee, on 10/23/2007, -13/+13PLEASE PUT METAL GEAR SOLID 3 ON A DIFFERENT SYSTEM

- SupaDawg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19I love to see people getting angry because it's "a prediction". Really, the only prediction is when the remaining stock will sell out. The 60G is getting discontinued without a doubt. Be it July or August... It'll be over this summer.
It's just a sly marketing move, and now that everyone knows what's going on i expect it to blow up in their pompous faces.- theaceoffire, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1WHY IS IT POMPOUS????
Who here thought this was ANYTHING beyond reclassification?
The 60 Gig is the new 20, and the new 80 is attempting to only use software (Like the ps2 does for the ps1). This means we can do stuff like load acceleration, edge smoothing, and so forth at a future date...
OF COURSE it's marketing, it is for a MARKET PRODUCT!
Are you telling me that Microsoft didn't admit to their 33% fail because of marketing reasons?
That the WII didn't change from Revolution to get it's name out?
God, this is ticking me off...
I LIKE the 360 for what it is: A modular next gen system that you can buy chunks of for a lower price.
I like the Wii for what it is: A low cost entertainment device for classic games.
And I like the ps3: A massively powerful, linux supporting supercomputer.
>.< sigh... Ok, you can mod me down.
Honestly, it always bugs me when people bash the console they didn't buy.
- theaceoffire, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1WHY IS IT POMPOUS????
- ReyBrujo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Makes sense from many points of view: 1) the 60GB machine has hardware compatibility which makes the console more expensive; 2) it makes gamers buy the 60GB version much faster; 3) by stating this, Sony of Europe justifies the fact they did not lower their price. Makes sense from many points of view, except from the gamer's one: 1) it sucks; 2) it sucks; 3) it sucks :-(
- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2For a gamer it sucks...why?
- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2For a gamer it sucks...why?
- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2160 gig drives are getting expensive as 80 gig becomes the new low end. That's all that is happening. The 80 gig models will actually cost less to manufacture since they will be moving to partial software emulation for PS2 games.
The 80 gig will be sold for $499 once the current stock of 60 gig models are sold out. And Sony, like every console company, will deny the 80 gig will be getting a price cut.- username9000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Please. And by the time the 80 gig is 499.00 the 360 will be 349.00 and it will continue to not matter. lol
I liked some of the playstation network games they showed, but other than that Sony is DONE.- locd32, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5360 will be 449.00 if you throw in a dying HD-DVD drive to put it on par with the PS3. Basically a $50 discount on a dying format. I have both a PS3 and a 360 elite, if I had to do it over again I'd buy the PS3 first for it's superior format and built in player. A lot of people buy these systems not just as consoles but as home entertainment units. $399.00 for a console is a pretty sh1tty deal. $499 for a console and a blue ray player is an unbelievable deal imho.
- mageofdeath, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2you must work for sony...
- StateofMind09, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Exactly what I've been saying all day. Reeves just let the cat out of the bag trying to find an excuse for Europe not getting a price cut.
- username9000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Please. And by the time the 80 gig is 499.00 the 360 will be 349.00 and it will continue to not matter. lol
- mdoom, on 10/11/2007, -7/+37So Sony keeps screwing over its fans...Microsoft has said all of its 360's are 'defective' to some extent...
Im no fan boy of any of the big three, but just from observing, Nintendo seems to be doing the most right. And not just because they are doing everything right, but because their competition is doing everything wrong!- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -13/+6So please explain how exactly "Sony is screwing over its fans"?
- RobotLeAwesome, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14How is Sony screwing over their fans you ask? It's all in one easy step!
;Releasing retardedly expensive hardware (especially overseas!) with no software that makes the purchase justifiable at all. I try really hard to like Sony, really I do - they've just made it so hard lately! WTF!?
Oh, and don't forget - over 250 titles coming out for the PS3! Woo! Oh, but only 15 are exclusive... and all of those probably won't be out until mid 2008....maybe.
I can play my old ps2 games though!!*
*except on the newest model of the PS3 - plutpwnium, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Sony has screwed its fans over. RobotLeAwesome has begun, and im sure the pyramid on my screen will expand to reveal more soon enough.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14How is Sony screwing over their fans you ask? It's all in one easy step!
- wageslaven, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1"...Microsoft has said all of its 360's are 'defective' to some extent"
Total, 100% inaccurate. MS has said, "We are having some failures, and we want our customers happy. Here's a 3 year warranty and your repair-money back". HOW THE ***** can you possibly spin that negatively?
Oh, so you can say "nintendo is doing everything right". Well, enjoy your GameCube 1.5 + Motion control, minus any online content or new Downloadable content (games, tv or movies in HD or otherwise) . Do you think the "Wii Fit" is a laughing-stock exercise gimmick or more "doing everything right"? give me a break. Hilarious.
- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -13/+6So please explain how exactly "Sony is screwing over its fans"?
- shauncorleone, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Wow. Just wow.
I asked the question in a previous post of why Sony is so adamant about having 2 SKUs. I guess they aren't, after all.
The drop to $500 could have driven down Blu Ray player prices, which would have increased regular player sales and make that technology more commonplace and cheaper to produce, thus enabling Sony to drop the price again in another 18 months.
On a related note: Am I the only one that thinks this is too public a scam for it to be for real? I mean, they have a Pre-E3 Press Conference announcing the price drop, only for this news to come out only a few days later? No matter how much of a conspiracy theorist you may be, it still seems a little TOO dramatic.- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5Wow. Just wow.
Can people really be this stupid? The 80 gig will be priced at $499 after the last 60 gig models are sold out...- adamkhel, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1But the 60gig model has hardware backward compatibility with the PS2 while the 80gig model does this via software instead. You win something (20gigs), but you lose something too. I fail to see what the big effing deal is here.
- rohcky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Source?
I can make a prediction like that too: Xbox 360 Elite will be $300 dollars... at the end if it's life cycle. Unless you have proof that this $500 80gb PS3 will be available as soon as the 60gbs are gone, pipe down.- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3Source? Because I'm not a ***** idiot.
The 80 gig will cost less to manufacture, no EE and 80 gig drives are cheaper now than 60s, and you think Sony will price them higher than current 60 gig models...right...- zofobread, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The 20 gig model was supposed to be the previous low end model, and barely saw any shelf time because Sony rarely ever replenished the stock of the 20 gig units. Sony is already selling the 60 gig model at a huge loss. I doubt they are saving an additional 100 dollars over the previous hard drive to justify selling the 80 gig model for $499 regardless of how many they have in stock. I don't forsee a price cut anytime soon.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0At the end of the life-cycle you'll be picking one up for 150 or less - technology prices are dropping extremely fast lately.
- Exhaust, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Source? Why would he need a source hes a blind fanboy. Just say whatever is needed to try and make his console better in the face of an obvious weakness...
Same as:

360 fanboy "My launch 360 has never failed"- DarKnight90, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1My cousins launch 360 has never failed and he's plays the dam thing non stop, the bastard. Mine broke. Some just go out for no reason and others don't.

- username9000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6OhFrak just spams. He will continue to spout the same thing over and over. "80 gig will be 499.00". whatever, by the time it is (if it ever is) MS will have done a REAL price drop on the 360 and it won't matter.
- Exhaust, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Come on OhFrak I know you're a PS3 fanboy whore and everything but there is ZERO proof Sony will drop the 80GB price after the 60GB sell out. You're just making an assumption based on your fanboy whoreness not wanting Sony to look bad. Yes they will most likely EVENTUALLY drop the 80GB model but who knows when that will happen it could be holiday 2008 you don't know. Meanwhile the PS3 is still $600 and there is NO price drop.
Fanboys are hilarious...- WillisDickfit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2OhFrak...please post proof that the 80GB will be 499 , or shut up. Most likely it will not, as the 80GB model will include a pack-in motorstorm and gimped backward compatability. Sony is done this generation. Sorry you are so butt-hurt about it.

Sony already dropped Blu Ray player prices once and siad they'll have a $350 unit for Xmas. - mikemil828, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow. Just wow. I'm pretty sure this is just another one of those 'Sony Executive talking out of his ass' bits that are so frequent nowadays (remember when they were denying flat out that there would be a rumble sixaxis?). No need do freak out until it actually happens
- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5Wow. Just wow.
- DPimp1262, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They just can't have good press. They are finally on our good side and they purposely ***** it up. What the hell are they thinking? Sales figures proved that we are not willing to pay 600 dollars for a game console and they try to force it on us again? My god.
