- rootsm3, on 11/18/2008, -4/+3Obama needs to have Malia and Sasha go to public schools to show that he's not an elitist like most of the windbags in DC. Plus, it'll teach the two of them humility.
- atdigg, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3People should stop telling other people what to do with they life and their children.
If there's a problem in this country is that people don't deal with THEIR ***** lives, but they tell other people what they should do. - liljay2k, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Oh, rootsm3 is just sore he wanted to be in the trench coat mafia after it was too late.
- atdigg, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3People should stop telling other people what to do with they life and their children.
- hiya1975, on 11/18/2008, -3/+3I wouldn't blame the Obamas if they sent their children to private school, but if they do so, it is a huge double standard not to support private school/homeschool expense tax credits that would allow other parents to be able to make the same choices. Either the Obamas believe in public education or they don't, but they can't say that public schools are good enough for the masses but not good enough for their own kids. Despite what Mrs. Obama says about not having made the decision yet, I'm sure this elitist first family has already selected a private school. She is quoted in the article saying "the decision that we make will be based on the best interests of the girls". Who in their right mind would choose a DC public school if they had other options? I only wish all parents could have the opportunity to make the best choice for their own children regardless of income. It's hypocrisy of the worst kind to subject low-income children to failing public schools and to continue to throw taxpayer money at schools that will never improve no matter how much money they receive when a simple, cost-effective solution exists -- tax credits for private school tuition and homeschool expenses. It won't help pay back the NEA lobbyists for their suppport of Obama's campaign, but it would be the right thing to do.
- Ni2A, on 11/18/2008, -2/+0very strange, isn't it... how will his girls manage
- lockr, on 11/18/2008, -1/+10Dugg, but...
Would the secret service go to class with them, or do people really think that the US would risk having the presidents' children kidnapped? Personally, I don't think that's the kind of "humility" kids need to learn.- BrainInAJar, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1SS protects all of the president's family
- thepoliticalcat, on 11/18/2008, -2/+10Absolutely NOT, those children should not go to public school. Given how much hate has been directed at their parents, we can't afford the risk of some loon using those kids as a target.
- Surferess, on 11/18/2008, -2/+2Interesting argument, but no.
- theadvinci, on 11/18/2008, -3/+1Public school maybe... But stay out of public toilets!
- davidhallstrom, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6No President's child should go to public school. Public schools are not set up for the security that would be needed.
- TheDataWhore, on 11/18/2008, -1/+4It would be a great PR move, but if the schools aren't right for them around there (for both security, and other reasons) then it is none of our business where they send them.
- dezweber, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5I'm not sure why the writer is under the impression that public schools are as safe as private schools. I do not think that Obama should put his children's lives at hazard in order to prove an invalid point to the American public. Public schools in America are not always up to par, which is in large part to how poorly the teachers are compensated.
- mooseontheloose, on 11/18/2008, -9/+2Hypocrisy, thy name is Obama.
- atdigg, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6Oh, wait, he has not even yet decided... but that's a small detail that won't stop you from spurting things against him.
BTW, mooseontheloose, if you were president would you send your girls to public school? I wonder... - FallenTurtles, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3You know, I saw you post on all these stories during the election. Even though I disagree with just about every word you say, I at least respected your ability to come to a conclusion based on some real information. Now you're just throwing out insults based on events that haven't even transpired yet because your candidate lost.
- atdigg, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6Oh, wait, he has not even yet decided... but that's a small detail that won't stop you from spurting things against him.
- johnnr2, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6For safety alone, they should go to private school. I would not want to be a child of the first black President in this country and have my safety compromised for political reasons. Obama won't allow this to happen to his daughters. The Secret Service is better able to protect them in certain private schools which they already have a working relationship with.
Aside from that, it's not my place to tell anyone where they should send their kids to school.. - kimsun, on 11/18/2008, -2/+0seemed like there were 8 reasons provided instead of the "Five" we were told. Perhaps that alone is enough reason to send them to private school.
- Boing, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1I can't see that as being a great idea... but I guess that's what the secret service is for. They will follow them everywhere.
- fadeout, on 11/18/2008, -1/+4Why won't these "lets tell the President elect how to raise his kids" articles die?
The Carters tried this already with their daughter. Amy Carter wasn't even allowed outside for recess due to the concerns. It was a disaster, for her and her schoolmates. - NoLibertarians, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3Not a Practical suggestion ...Too much for the school to handle and to much of a safety concern !!
- FallenTurtles, on 11/18/2008, -2/+2I really don't like the notion of these "elitist" private schools. I went to private and my parents worked damn hard to make sure we had the money to afford it. We live in a modest home and we struggle with bills like other families. I understand that being able to even consider affording private school sets my family on a financial tier above many other families, but we're by no means elitist.
- cersad, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Hillary Clinton wanted to send her daughter to public school, but she was advised that Chelsea would never get an ounce of peace in a public system (The article mentions this too). Unfortunately, with Obama evoking much stronger feelings than the Clintons did, I don't see much peace for the girls at a public school.
- seattlegirluw, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1It just seems like, from what I've seen of private schools, there are a lot more variables in a public school. More kids, easier to get into as a part of the public without being as noticeable...
I guess I stupidly assumed that the kids of presidents had tutors and didn't to to even private schools, because of security issues. But personally I would see nothing elitist in sending your kids to a private school. Personally, I don't think of private schools as elitist. Just a waste of money. In most places (not all) you can get a perfectly good education through the honors & AP classes. - MillenniumX, on 11/30/2008, -0/+0In its current state, the DC public school system simply cannot handle any President's children (some would say it cannot handle anybody's children at all, but the scope of this discussion is on Obama's children in particular). There is no practical choice here: Obama's first duty to his children is as their father, not as their President. What would you do: send them to a school with a proven track record of safely educating Presidential kids, or send them to a school in a system consistently ranked one of the worst in the nation?
If anything, Obama should use this as an example of just how badly the nation's schools need to be fixed, and commit to a goal of bringing even DC up to a level that could handle a President's children within eight years.
