CBS News Correspondent: "I'd blow my brains out" watch!
youtube.com — The latest in a series of recent high-profile media "mea culpas," CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan told Jon Stewart she'd "blow her brains out" if forced to watch what passes for TV news coverage in America.

- Hefelumpman, on 06/20/2008, -2/+109I lived in the UK all my life up until last October, and when nothing else was on TV, I'd have BBC News 24 playing in the background at all times.
The US? I really cannot watch the news in this country.- peterfnet, on 06/20/2008, -1/+29But we play BBC News here

Nothing like being spoonfed from a self-admitted biased news source, I guess. Saves you the trouble of critical thinking.- wisam, on 06/20/2008, -6/+25BBC is a biased news source?
I guess FOX News is fair and balanced then. - Hefelumpman, on 06/20/2008, -3/+26As far as news agencies go, the BBC is about as unbiased as it gets. Would you compare it to Fox, or even CNN? I don't want punditry - I want the news.
Which is better? To listen to a source that admits bias, or to listen to sources that are insanely biased, but go under the guise of independence and impartiality?
How many people do you think believe that Fox is fair and balanced? Isn't that number depressingly high? - floorman56, on 06/20/2008, -19/+5As far as news agencies go, the BBC is about as unbiased as it gets

OK so? ...
Was there not a 'impartiality summit' called by BBC chairman Michael Grade?
Did not Washington correspondent Justin Webb said that the BBC is so biased against America that deputy director general Mark Byford had secretly agreed to help him to 'correct', it in his reports?
If so then why do we care where it comes from? - honeymustardn, on 06/20/2008, -7/+4Exactly, BBC News is ***** biased, just like the other news channels. Ok, maybe Fox news is more biased, but the whole point is IT IS biased: http://www.biased-bbc.blogspot.com I guess American Digg users have just conjured up a magical idea of BBC News from seeing a few clips on Youtube.
- wisam, on 06/20/2008, -6/+25BBC is a biased news source?
- oninbonin, on 06/20/2008, -12/+2So which news source is UNBIASED in the whole friggin world...I'm curious? Personally, I believe they are all bought and paid for and show only what the people who bought and paid want you to see. The only way to actually get solid news is to actually be there. Thieves! Liars! Thieves! Liars!
- Hefelumpman, on 06/20/2008, -1/+8It's a good thing the BBC is funded by the public through taxes and not beholden to any single individual, sponsors or advertisers.
- oninbonin, on 06/20/2008, -8/+4Hmn you believe that? Wow...just wow.
- Suil, on 06/20/2008, -0/+16It's a myth that the BBC is not biased. They certainly are, very gently, and there are blogs on the topic.
Compared to the US Media though? Holy *****. The BBC are angels.

- solarsavior, on 06/20/2008, -1/+14I don't watch our (US) new either as it makes me vomit. I actually tried to watch it last night as there wasn't much else on TV at the time. Within 2 minutes, I moved on to something else. It is unbearable.
- digiframes, on 06/20/2008, -0/+9News isn't news here (US), it's trash.
- Spudster, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7There ARE good independent media in the United States. Online you can find Democracy Now and on television PBS still has excellent political coverage (Bill Moyers for example).
- cawpin, on 06/20/2008, -11/+2Are you people ***** insane? I went to Scotland for my honeymoon and watched the "news" on the BBC. I've never seen so much sensationalist crap in my life. The newspapers were the same way.
- allywilson, on 06/20/2008, -0/+41) You went to Scotland? I'm from there. Why the f*ck did you go there on your honeymoon?
2) Sensationalist crap? Like what? I'd rather watch BBC than Sky (owned by Rupert Murdoch).
3) OK, I agree, the 'newspapers' are abysmal. But you have to understand that we have Tabloids and Broadsheets. Tabloids are full of junk (usually) and Broadsheets are not (usually).
There is no direct correlation I believe, but Broadsheets are usually larger (longer, wider) than tabloids - oh, and they don't necessarily have sensationalist headlines (e.g. Beckham has 12 heads! Extra!).
- allywilson, on 06/20/2008, -0/+41) You went to Scotland? I'm from there. Why the f*ck did you go there on your honeymoon?
- InRussetShadows, on 06/20/2008, -13/+2Yes, they are insane. Welcome to Digg. They hate the US News because it's not leftist enough. *shaking head*
- Spudster, on 06/20/2008, -1/+9Try Democracy Now. Great daily podcast covering world events and news. Amazing how good it is.
- max4077, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7I lived in the US all my life and recently moved to the UK where I've been for about a year. The news here may be sensationalist now and again, but it is not overtly partisan nor does it tell lies of omission. The US media cannot be depended upon for objective journalism to any extent anymore. Here in Europe, you still can do.
- ornitier, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Western media in general censor out a lot of the gruesome scenes of war. If you went to Africa, Middle East or some areas in Asia, the media there have a much higher threshold for gruesomeness. I was pretty surprised that the news in India showed some of the torn up bodies just a few hours after the Hyderabad Bombings last year. To be honest, as much as I can understand how the journalist is frustrated by the censorship of what she's trying to broadcast, I also understand how a lot of people here wouldn't be able to hold their stomach if they saw what she describes.

Anyway it's not like European news is perfect, but objectivity in the media is very important here. Here in The Netherlands we even have a TV program that deals solely with media objectivity.

- EricSchC1, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1There's no such ***** thing as "overly informed citizenry" ...Any grown taxpaying, voting adult who can't wrap their heads around whats going on in the world and the best (most peaceful, humane, compassionate, cost-effective, etc.) resolution for these issues doesn't deserve to be a grown taxpaying, voting adult in the first ***** place.
- Fozefy, on 06/21/2008, -1/+1@EricSchC1 Actually there is such a thing as "overly informed citizenery". Most people don't care enough, which is the reason for the poor media. The media has to choose what to show, because people won't care about a lot of things and if the average person is continuously bombarded with information they'll stop caring. You might call me crazy, because you and probably the majority of your friends aren't like that, but that's probably a reason they are your friends. People on Digg are definitely not like that, but we are a minority. Think about it though, if people wanted to be more informed they would be and they wouldn't be voting for someone like John McCain.
- matroska1, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1Off-topic: Just wanted to say the NL team has been awesome in the Euro Cup this year (I'm from the U.S.); they've definitely had the most exciting games to watch and I'm rooting for you guys to win it all
- cheeseplease, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1Thanks man, we're all pretty proud of our team over here. Hope they're gonna do well against Russia this saturday but I don't think it should be too hard. Didn't know Americans liked soccer :)

- kelmaster1, on 06/20/2008, -21/+15Wow, American media biased? And I'm sure that all the media in Europe has no agenda and is completely independent. :P Give me a break, ALL major media world wide is biased and everyone has their own agenda. Its a common ploy to cover "both sides" so that it seems accurate. When was the last time you heard about something bad about the IMF, the World Bank, Israel government, Saudi Arabia etc.. Europeans have a smug sense of that they know everything that Americans don't, but they are just as stupid believing their media. Granted, American media is probably one of the more propaganda filled media; but European media is not void of it, just different.
- cheeseplease, on 06/20/2008, -2/+7One of the main differences is that (when comparing a regular newscast) European media go deeper into the subjects and show different viewpoints, while American media touch most topics just very lightly and present it like it is "the truth" instead of just one way of viewing the subject.
American news is also much more sensationalist. I really can't stand watching CNN, it almost views like an action movie to me.- floorman56, on 06/20/2008, -2/+4American news is also much more sensationalist

- floorman56, on 06/20/2008, -2/+4American news is also much more sensationalist
- pensivewombat, on 06/20/2008, -2/+7Nobody said anything about biased/unbiased. I don't know why people assume that all the media has to do is be neutral and everything will be ok. The problem isn't left/right bias, it's a stupid bias.
- stickyman, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5kelmaster1, you are talking out of your arse.
have a look at news.bbc.co.uk and search for IMF, the World Bank, Israel government, Saudi Arabia etc, and see how many critical stories you find - bono4u, on 06/20/2008, -3/+2"no agenda and is completely independent"
i don't know of agenda's but there is surly no thing as "independent" media/journalist, objectivity depends on the point of view(s) you are able to include.
"When was the last time you heard about something bad about the IMF, the World Bank, Israel government, Saudi Arabia etc.."
These topics are rather reluctantly covered.
"Europeans have a smug sense of that they know everything that Americans don't" Start reading the german(foreign language) news, perhaps then you might claim this preconception for yourself.
"American media is probably one of the more propaganda filled media; but European media is not void of it, just different."
extract "probably" from your statement and i can sign it - archiesteel, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1"Give me a break, ALL major media world wide is biased and everyone has their own agenda."
That's an oversimplification of the issue. Some media *are* more biased than others.
Just because complete objectivity is impossible doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for it.

I'm Canadian...some family of mine moved to California and said they can't get any decent news and decided to pay extra to have one of our newspapers delivered to their house and to get CBC news, so they can stay informed without the American bias on everything.
But rest assured...most of the world is aware of your ignorance and expects dumb ***** to spew out of your mouths...it's funny.- cameldung, on 06/20/2008, -6/+15The CBC is horrible - the B is bias. Its no different than Fox or CNN - there is an agenda.
I am Canadian.- Gutterpunk, on 06/20/2008, -0/+6Thats because you don't watch CNN or Fox. The CBC is biased compared to other in Canada. Compared to the MSM in the US, the CBC is Fair and Balanced ++...
- RyanBlack, on 06/20/2008, -6/+3Yeah CBC is owned by the Canadian government, of course its going to be bias.
- ferkranus, on 06/20/2008, -2/+4I stand by my point that CBC news does not contain an American bias.
A Canadian bias...fine...I trust our bias more than theirs any day. - Spudster, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4No, compared to other Canadian broadcasters such as CTV and Global, CBC is NOT biased. They are more in tune with their audience than any other network I know, because they care little about corporate advertising interests when selecting their coverage.
The only arguably more objective station would be CPAC. - archiesteel, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7CBC News is actually among the least biased in the world. It may be a public service, but it's very independent from the influence of politicians - one only has to look at how critical they can be of sitting governments (whether they are liberals or conservatives).
- Fozefy, on 06/21/2008, -0/+2Sure, the CBC is biased, everything in this world is going to be biased no matter how hard you try. However, compare it to anything in the states and the CBC looks amazing. I live in a Canadian border city so I get both American and Canadian news...sometimes I watch american news for a bit, but it just ends with me laughing at them. CBC is always way more on top of world events. Heck, in most cases CBC is more accurate about things happening in the US. Especially if it has anything to do with Iraq.
- johnboycanada, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1NOT True! According to Reporters Without Boarders, New Zealand and Canada are the English speaking world's highest rated on the freedom of press index. CBC Newsworld and The Hour are my programs. Been trying to get Al-jazzera English but it's only available via fta satellite. BBC world I don't have much respect for ... here's why... I work a lot in Southeast Asia (I won't mention what countries, let's just say press is highly restrictive.) Where CNN will criticize countries they are distributed in, BBC will stear clear of such controversial reports. In fact, I recall 8 years ago CNN lost distribution rights by the government for some of its reporting. I have the overwhelming feeling the people at BBC World Asia steer clear of its minders.
- cameldung, on 06/20/2008, -6/+15The CBC is horrible - the B is bias. Its no different than Fox or CNN - there is an agenda.
- staffa, on 06/20/2008, -3/+28She is talking about how our solders are feeling forgotten in a war that never ends and how American news coverage seems more concerned with the sex lives of celebrities and other such nonsense and the first post, a popular post at that is one talking about having sex with the news correspondent.
Sigh, kinda proving their point.
I like a joke as much as anyone, but until you stop seeing EVERYTHING as a joke, then that is all this country will be, a joke. A very sad, dangerous, screwing the world up very fast, joke.

- Narrator, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4I get a kick out of watching Russia Today which is kind of like the Russia's BBC. It is pretty absurdly biased but at least i know what the bias is. Georgia -- bad! Former soviet states who don't like Russians -- very bad! Putin GOOOD! Former soviet states removing monuments to soviet solders -- Very Very Bad -- National Crisis Bad!
- thedarkwolf, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Estonia FTW
- marillion, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I think a tacit point being made here is that most Americans have an assumption that their media, while not perfect, is at least reasonably neutral. I doubt most Russians would say the same of their media.
I think most of the problem with American media stems from how it's marketed. It's marketed to advertisers. Advertisers don't care about truth or accountability. They care about market shares and eyeballs. It is a sad but true reflection of human nature that lots of people love to know what's going on with the celebrity trollop du jour.

- wbgo, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3In practice, however, the German system is a recipe for stalemate, particularly with the current joke coalition.
The advantage of the US and British systems, while perhaps unfair, is that they generally produce an effective government. Too many European countries have got coalitions so complex and disjointed that they become impotent goverments.
For all the apparent diversity, there are very rarely more than two realistic choices for president/prime minister/chancellor, who--at least in Western Europe--are usually the two most centrist of the available choices.

- Iztikeit, on 06/20/2008, -0/+0The simple solution is to never watch the news unless you are in a position to fix things. That's the only way the news, to me, could be tolerable.
- staffa, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Well, as long as you are voluntarily choosing absolute and total ignorance about current events, please also be responsible with your own self imposed naivety, and don't vote.

It would just take, you know, like actual work.- Iztikeit, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0There's a difference between "watching" the news and being involved with fixing the problem. Do you think 95% of the people who watch the news do anything EXCEPT stew over it and bitch about it? I'd like to join that 5% or so but I'm not in any position at the moment to do so.

- Iztikeit, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0That's true, but no one has the balls or will. I don't want to be bothered with "fixing" things which are nothing more than a conscious decision away. Almost every problem in the world can be solved with one national change of perspective.

Blogging and distributed information distribution/analysis is the next evolutionary step. We're ahead of the curve because we do not rely on a single network or government network for our news, we all use a number of sources. This generally leads people to question sources more, and that's good.- Spudster, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3I agree with the trend that you have identified, but I personally don't think that Americans are leading the way. This is a trend being seen all over developed countries and not just the United States.
- BigManOnCampus, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Then perhaps leading the way in abandoning traditional media structures for news.

- m4532v, on 06/19/2008, -15/+407We don't see it as uniformed or terrible because we have our media and information "spoon fed" to us to the extent that the only place to get real news is from "news comedy"! You really have to be looking for the truth to get it. The news stations ALL have their talking points and some lean left and some lean right but they are all in the same league. They all sold us this war and didn't question the president because of the "dissent is unpatriotic" crap that has consumed America like a cancer.
- ShanonaRyder, on 06/20/2008, -3/+35that sounds about right.
- Scrappy1850, on 06/20/2008, -21/+6i think you aqre talking about the daily show when you refer to "news comedy" right? while the show is entertaining and funny, if you consider that "the only place to get real news" then man you need to open your eyes some. they rehash the same stuff you see on other news broadcasts. its the same stuff! just looked at from a funny angle. you can find real news anywhere you just need to know how to filter out the opinions and make your own.
- VcTrMASO, on 06/20/2008, -3/+13Sigh, you know what he meant.
- Scrappy1850, on 06/20/2008, -7/+3no, please explain. how is john stewart talking about iraq "real" but when another network talks about iraq it is propaganda for their way of thinking?
- Hamletlere, on 06/20/2008, -1/+8Really? I haven't seen much at ALL about the Iraq Commission's report on the President effectively lying to bring about the war. The Daily Show showed clips of the conclusions of the report being read, and then clips showing how it was not being reported on by the main stream media.
How is that mere regurgitation of media coverage in a humorous light?
I do watch the Daily Show. As a moderate, I find its heavy liberal bias a bit much some times, but I find it refreshing as media outlet that brings to light inconsistencies in things the government says. I hope that if we get a Democratic President, Mr. Stuart will continue to show this sort of information and not become some sort of syncophantic media outlet.
- VcTrMASO, on 06/20/2008, -3/+13Sigh, you know what he meant.

- NotOptium, on 06/20/2008, -2/+29Don't forget NPR. They've been doing consistently good work for years (decades?).
However, in my experience, Jon Stewart has ALWAYS asked far better questions than any pundit. Though I think the fact that he's a comedian gives him this ability. If Bill O'Reily were to ask someone "why are you destroying America?", they'd become instantly defensive and there'd probably be some outrage from their organization, etc.
But when Stewart asks that question, though he may be serious, they don't have to take him completely seriously, and can give a genuine answer after a chuckle, such as "well I believe it's in the best interest of this country......"- doctechnical, on 06/20/2008, -15/+2"However, in my experience, Jon Stewart has ALWAYS asked far better questions than any pundit."
As well he should, given most pundits don't have a paid staff of writers to give them those questions.- MacEnvy, on 06/20/2008, -0/+17Actually, a lot of pundits DO have writing/editing/production staffs that help them.

- NotOptium, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Stewart went off the air but came back and did interviews without the writers. Him going off the air was more about solidarity with his co-workers than him being unable to do the show without them. He showed that he could carry the show for a while without any writers.
Beyond this, his ability to do an interview isn't based on how good his writers are. He has to react to what the person is saying and improvise during all interviews.

- buggles, on 06/20/2008, -3/+1I disagree, Americans have always been ready to dissent. I think it is patriotic too. I think most people were ready to give the American Government (if not Bush) the benefit of the doubt on the reputation and vast resources of our Intelligence community in the military.
The American Government has boldly gambled that any retribution or accountability for being incompetent, wrong, or outright deceitful will be negligible. Our media may try to spin things in a positive light, depending on their bias as you pointed out, but I think they were duped just like everyone else was.- DestroyFascism, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Americans have always been ready to dissent? *****!

They have also done amazing shows on Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, and the Patriot Act. Their stories are in a narrative style, but always more comprehensive then what you get in the mainstream media. Books too are a great source of news because of the compilation and contextualization of the information; books are also inherently more comprehensive and narrative-based.

- doctechnical, on 06/20/2008, -6/+4I think the better question is why did this guy join the Marines if he didn't want to kill people? Was the recruiter handing out lollipops the day he enlisted?

It is a soldier's duty to not obey illegal orders and to report it to the chain of command. Every soldier is responsible for his/her own actions. That "I was just following orders" defense doesn't work anymore. That's why those abu ghraib ***** are in prison right now.
A soldier should stay true to himself and his values regardless of the adversaries and should always hold his head up high when refusing illegal orders.

The crime of the American people is ignorance, but isn't that what this article is about?
I would have to say that you are equally ignorant. Who is this "righteous" power you speak of? Are you so ignorant of history that you don't know that any power that becomes capable of "bring[ing] us to our knees" would simply take our place?
We went to war to take out the Taliban and Saddam. The Taliban and Saddam were bad. They are gone now, that is good. What has happened since then is a tragedy.- bpoteat, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3The Taliban are not gone. Not even close.

- Emmo213, on 06/20/2008, -12/+127Her entire interview was excellent, including parts about how she was in a hotel when it was blown up, how soldiers respond to her, her comments about not seeing dead American solders in the media, and this comment about the poor quality of American journalism. Yeah, I think she's good looking too but instead of discussing the issues she brings up 75% of these comments are going to be "he he boobies". Maybe we as American do deserve the mindless drivel that Fox spoon feeds us.
- shutaro, on 06/20/2008, -14/+61he he... boobies.

- lacr, on 06/20/2008, -7/+2I'd have to disagree with you. Emmo proves a point. I know this site is all about getting informed by media all over the world--and then responding with the wittiest comment you can come up with...and that's alright with me. But with the rep that digg users get, being "nerds" who never get girls, you all aren't really helping your case out by the comments some of you make!
- Larsonal777, on 06/20/2008, -11/+5Wow... so you don't like the mindless drivel from Fox... I get it... so turn the ***** channel... I swear... anyone who wants to be informed needs to be listening to more than one station so complaining about ONE and only ONE over and over again gets really annoying.
- mojoface, on 06/20/2008, -3/+19Putting three periods does not make a super period.
- sparsely, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4Of course not...it makes an ellipsis.
- Emmo213, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3You actually make a point, but I don't have to turn the channel because I don't have Fox on to begin with. It's the people to do watch Fox that worry me.

- relic180, on 06/20/2008, -1/+4@shutaro

- FREETHINKER2008, on 06/20/2008, -4/+121The corporate news media in this country is a joke, you have to watch bbc to find out what's going on in other places around the world. We don't need around the clock news coverage of the death of Anna Nicole Smith. Unfortunatley the American public has been dumbed down to the point that they can't pay attention to important world news, only celeb reality crap. One more thing, we all know who's running for president. So therefore we don't need minute by minute updates about what Mccain and Obama are doing.
- nonymous666, on 06/20/2008, -1/+17Anna Nicole died!? OMFG!!!!!
- BadseedJR, on 06/20/2008, -0/+10This is an entirely accurate comment. I can't watch any news anymore. I think I have seen 1 news broadcast since I was 16. I'm 26 now. Even the local news is just trash. They go all over the country to fond some bad news story about a car wreck or some disaster. The last story I saw on the news was seriously about a 2 person fatal accident in Alabama. That would be fine normally I guess, except I'm in Spokane, Washington and it was the "local" news. the only news on the war I get is from Digg or Reddit. My roommate does a good job of finding videos by soldiers too, since he's been to Iraq 2 times and is going back again. Those videos are real news.
- Treoinmypocket, on 06/20/2008, -8/+6Why would you watch the BBC to find out anything when you know they are as dishonest as the Major American Media outlets?
BBC biased towards Palestine
-http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-444074/BBC ...
BBC internal memo admits bias:guilty of promoting Left-wing views, anti-Christian sentiment; unbalanced and disproportionate representation of homosexuals and ethnic minorities, overt promotion of multiculturalism, and anti-Americanism.
-http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3318582, ...- Nitesmoke, on 06/20/2008, -1/+5because those are all things that are popular on digg.
- CartoonAl, on 06/20/2008, -1/+8Although I agree that the BBC can be biased, don't you think that pointing to articles in the Daily Mail and Israel News to support this is a bit, well, biased?
- Treoinmypocket, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3No - not when these are facts. The internal memo from the BBC executives was everywhere. This was just the first "google grab" that pulled up the info.
- Treoinmypocket, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3No - not when these are facts. The internal memo from the BBC executives was everywhere. This was just the first "google grab" that pulled up the info.
- FREETHINKER2008, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I just meant bbc is the only news channel with news from Africa, Asia etc, etc.
- InRussetShadows, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1Again, it's because the news in America isn't leftist ENOUGH. The Diggbats lurve themselves some Beeb action because it's self-justifying leftism AND America-bashing with a little bit of Mohammedian love just for spice.
- johnboycanada, on 06/20/2008, -0/+0I was going to read that article until I saw it posted on ynetnews.
- hellgas00, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1WOW, now that you mention it, these stories come from Dailymail and ynetnews, which are at the pinnacle of journalism. When will people learn that sourcing your information from such sites at these, implicitly makes you a douchebag.
- Larsonal777, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3actually the more we know about the candidates the better to make an informed decision... just gotta be careful to filter out the media's opinion. Though yes I agree... celebrities do not need to be in the news thats what the celebrity gossip shows are for.
- donte, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4Unfortunately most of Americans lack the brain power to filter out filter out the media's opinion on political candidates, or sadly, Ben Affleck's opinion on political candidates for that matter.
- FREETHINKER2008, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2I agree, if the media would have spent equal time reporting on all candidates, maybe the American public would be better informed of who the best candidates are.
- Larsonal777, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Anytime a celebrity opens their mouth and it isn't about their new movie or album... i close my ears... they've got talent in what they do... they can Act like other people... they can sing... that doesn't make them smarter or more informed than the average person... it just gives them a microphone to spew they're BS opinions... wow so and so actor endorses Obama/McCain.... wow... what does this mean for the world... um to me it means Obama/McCain can count on one more vote... and sadly however many dumbass fans that want to be like that actor.
- Kzoo, on 06/20/2008, -0/+0Some of them are actually pretty smart. The trick is picking out which ones those are, though the media probably aren't going to talk to/about them intelligently anyway.

- AlbertCress, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Living in the UK it's not like I have to go out of my way to watch the BBC - so I guess I'm slightly better informed about how British and US troops are still fighting pointless wars.
Not that it makes much of a difference.
Democracy can bring down kings, and shatter divine right - so it really should have the capacity to be way better than Fox. Don't blame the media - just win the argument.
Oh and the BBC does not have a bias towards Palestine - it just does not reserve judgment on Israel - MrViklund, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Well spoken!
- monsieurginger, on 06/20/2008, -16/+1831. I was in France 4 years ago watching the news(no, i didn't go to france just to watch hot female french broadcasters) and they showed deal US soldiers lying in the street in Baghdad. Americans should see what real war looks like. War is hell.
2. Mmmmm, I'd hit that.- monsieurginger, on 06/20/2008, -1/+22correction- dead soldiers not deal
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 06/20/2008, -12/+8Yeah, its sucks how all we Americans think war is just rainbows and sunshine. Maybe if we stopped teaching our kids that war includes gum drop throwing and blowing kisses, we would have a real understanding of what happens over there.
- seanc6610, on 06/20/2008, -1/+4rainbows and sunshine? really?
- normalkid0615, on 06/20/2008, -2/+12showing what really happens in war would decrease recruitment.
- Larsonal777, on 06/20/2008, -10/+11Yes war is hell... does the news show people who die everyday in things like car accidents? No... everyone knows its hell... If I was a soldier I wouldn't want the media to plaster my dead body up for everyone to see and then put their opinion with it... We do NOT have a draft... everyone in the military KNOWS the risks... you sign up knowing that you will more than likely go to war... I wouldn't respect anyone who signed up thinking they'd get a free ride on the taxpayers dollar. I know a LOT of people who are in the military and many of them signed up after we were at war... so using the fact that our boys are dying as the only reason for us to get out of Iraw is an insult to our soldiers. They signed up to help... they signed up to risk their lives to help... they want the help they've brought to be noticed and supported... they want their sacrifice to be respected... the do NOT want their sacrifice to be an excuse to retreat.
- sparsely, on 06/20/2008, -1/+14Wars are waged on the backs of the masses. Indeed, war itself is supposedly for the benefit of the common citizen. Therefore, we have the right to evaluate the progress of conflicts, see the results of our actions, and stay fully informed about our military's doings. It is the duty of the press to provide this information to citizens, especially in foreign conflicts. Full, accurate reporting, even the ugly truths. Without that, we have no way to be informed voters.
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/20/2008, -0/+6While I agree that they signed up, they also assumed that they would go to war for just reasons. Based on our 200+ year history, they were probably stupid for thinking this. However, it's a hell of a lot different knowing you died defending your country as opposed to aiding and abetting the current administration's cronies.
- zombies187, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2They don't want their sacrifice to be an excuse for America to destroy ourselves in a war with the wrong people.
- Larsonal777, on 06/20/2008, -1/+2First off, ALL we've heard about in the news is the UGLY truths... any time bad stuff is happening... we hear about it... when we are making progress? Nothing... it goes quiet... so I give the same arguement...
Yes the American people have the right to know whats going on... but if you havent heard stories yet of what happens if you let the press get out on a day to day... minute by minute baisis then you are missing a BIG part of the picture... the press can hurt our boys over there more than they realize... when you send out information into the public domain it doesn't just go to US citizens... it goes to our enemies as well... I've read stories before of insurgents attacking with mortar... then a soldier went posted on his blog (of course not thinking) that he was glad no one got hurt and that if they came at a different time and hit the dinning center in the middle of camp there would have been casualties. guess what... they saw the blog... they came back and there were casualties... check out the wealth of information online that if you had (and you were an insurgent) you could probably do some damage. Do you think these people don't have access to this?
Also my problem, is that most of the arguements are that we need to pull out because of the casualties... (thats all she mentions) and I'm telling you... you have better not use the soldiers sacrifice to push your own political agenda. All I hear about is this war is wrong because it kills soldiers... or broad generalized statements like "aiding and abetting the current administration's cronies" WTF does that mean? Seriously... if you have something thats against the war other than broad statements without any support behind them... then you are just pushing your own political agenda. "I heard the War was bad... grumble grumble... I THINK its the reason for the high gas prices, so I'm going to fight it."- sparsely, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Well, obviously you want to use common sense from reporting. If your anecdote is true, that soldier was a ***** idiot for clearly identifying vulnerabilities in their methods. Obviously, our press should use better judgment than that, but aside from releasing information that has a high likelihood of endangering our troops, nothing should be held back. Pictures of dead soldiers and reports from Afghanistan do not meet such criteria, thus Americans should be informed of it if a reporter finds it newsworthy.
To address your second paragraph: I think you know the war was a farce from the beginning. There was no WMD, Saddam was a threat to no one including his neighbors (and especially the US), had nothing to do with the September 11, and the American people were duped into supporting it by media complicity.
There is nothing noble, moral, or justified about this war.
- sparsely, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Well, obviously you want to use common sense from reporting. If your anecdote is true, that soldier was a ***** idiot for clearly identifying vulnerabilities in their methods. Obviously, our press should use better judgment than that, but aside from releasing information that has a high likelihood of endangering our troops, nothing should be held back. - Larsonal777, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1With the wrong people? Terrorists and suicide bombers? Um ok... you're going to have to come up with a better arguement than that.
- greenm1981, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2The people that attacked us on 9/11. Iraqis did not fly planes into our buildings. That's what was meant by the "wrong people."
- greenm1981, on 06/20/2008, -1/+31)War is not about the soldiers. When you enlist in the military you do so for NON-personal reasons. You enlist in the military to sacrifice personal interests for the good of the nation. It is good for the nation to realize the full ramifications of its actions.
2) It is clear from your argument that you've never been to Iraq or Afghanistan. How can the press hurt our boys over there? Or a soldier's blog for instance? There are hundreds, maybe thousands of local national civilians that walk in and out of our installations over there daily. They do this because we contract out every last garrison activity to them.
This isn't WW2, where the location of our forces is unknown to the enemy. We are occupying and attempting to conduct military operations WITHIN, the entire civilian populace. Our locations, patterns of movement, equipment, etc is no secret to anyone. All any "terrorist" has to do is look out the window to gather the intel it needs.
So I'll ask again, how does press coverage of the wounded inhibit our tactical advantage?
- BECoole, on 06/20/2008, -3/+3How many dead Jihadis did they show?
- Jexie, on 06/20/2008, -3/+4Probably not many considering these Iraqi's are just fighting for their freedom from the American occupation. Though the invasion has created many 'jihadis' that will be visiting the US over the next few decades now I am sure.
- Dragular, on 06/20/2008, -3/+1Step one, remove head from ass.
- Jexie, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1Thats the best you have? Why don't you tell me whats wrong with what I said?
- Dragular, on 06/21/2008, -1/+1Because you're so ***** brainwashed that you've probably got that exact phrase locked in your clipboard and you're just randomly copy/pasting it in every Iraq war related thread. For some reason, they want us over there. The ones who don't are the minority, not the majority. If the majority of Iraqis didn't want us there, they'd be picking off troops the second they tried to leave the green zone. Makes sense to me, doesn't it to you?
- Jexie, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1Of course, anyone who doesn't agree with your point of view is just brainwashed. If the majority of Iraqi's wanted you there then you wouldn't need to have a green zone to begin with dumbass.
- Jexie, on 06/20/2008, -3/+4Probably not many considering these Iraqi's are just fighting for their freedom from the American occupation. Though the invasion has created many 'jihadis' that will be visiting the US over the next few decades now I am sure.

"More soldiers died in Afghanistan last month than in Iraq. Who's paying attention to that?"
"We may be tired of hearing about this 5 years later, but they [the soldiers] still have to go out and do the same job."
She's spot on.- ElAssoWipo, on 06/20/2008, -4/+33You'll be hearing it in twenty years too.
Nobody in the history of mankind was ever able to invade afghanistan successfully.
Not Romans, not the Babyloneans, nobody. Some took "control" of the land, such as Mongols, but they never succeeded in making Afghanistan anything other than Afghanistan. Not since 1800 BC.
You'll have to kill them all in order for them to stop fighting your presence. They are just plain too proud.
"May God deliver us from the venom of the Cobra, teeth of the tiger, and the vengeance of the Afghan."
- Alexander the Great. (Also, Rambo 3)- Ryan32, on 06/20/2008, -21/+5Nobody ever successfully invaded Afghanistan? Dude if we wanted to we could curb stomp the ***** out of that country and take it for our own....
As is we are only keeping a small footprint there for political post 9/11 reasons.... If we wanted to truly invade and rule that country it'd be no chore.
You all forget that currently we are "invading" places like Iraq and Afghanistan with the intention of being "nice" and "helping". If we truly dropped a plan to invade and conquer, we'd own that ***** in under 24/hours.- BossKey, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5"If we truly dropped a plan to invade and conquer, we'd own that ***** in under 24/hours."
'Ownng' is not the problem. We already proved we could bomb the crap out of anyone in 24 hours. We even did it a few times in this war ("shock and awe"). But we would still not be able to hang on to Afghanistan for any length of time, or keep it from reverting after we left. You do have plans for after we leave, right? You do expect us to leave, right? - metaliq, on 06/20/2008, -2/+8If, by owning, you mean nuking the entire population, you are correct.
AMERICA! ***** YEAH!
-_- - S1ngular1ty1, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Russia couldn't do it and they had an army in many respects equal to that of the US. Why do you think it would be any different for the US?
- dudeguy1234, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Didn't we "invade and control" Iraq? Yeah, that ***** was totally ours within 24 hours. YEAH! Not.

LETS ***** CARPET BOMB THEM - Corrosionx, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1"You all forget that currently we are "invading" places like Iraq and Afghanistan with the intention of being "nice" and "helping"."

It's illegal to show dead bodies or people dying on American television, so, obviously never. That's a stupid comment, not an intelligent one.- paradox4190, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4No. You're incorrect.

- Trublmakr, on 06/21/2008, -0/+2Got a law against truth in the land of the free eh?
- Corrosionx, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1So what, are you defending this? The law is there so the government won't look bad, it's anti-freedom of speech.
- noprtyaff, on 06/20/2008, -5/+2When John Murtha shamelessly and falsely accused the Haditha marines of murder, it was all over socialist MSM U.S. news. Even the media s_l_u_t_s and media w_h_o_r_e_s at Fox News and CNN foamed at the mouth. And now, all Marines involved have been completely exonerated. Including Colonel Chessani. And where pray tell in the marxist U.S. media now? There has been dead silence in the media about this story.
And somehow John Murtha is still a member of congress.
Have a nice day. - emilychap, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1

The Fellowship aka The Family aka the Christian mafia. This is the most powerful "Christian" group in America. This group is quite sick in that instead of having a trinity of the father the son and the holy ghost, it's a trinity of Hitler, Stalin, and Mao. They say that Democracy has run it's course and it's time for "Godly Rule" on earth. They use Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Bin Ladan, Pol Pot and other as examples of Godly rule.
Examples of their morality or lack there of.
David said, “let's talk about the Old Testament. Who would you say are its good guys?”... “King David,” David Coe said. “That's a good one. David. Hey. What would you say made King David a good guy?”... “King David,” David Coe went on, “liked to do really, really bad things.” He chuckled. “Here's this guy who slept with another man's wife—Bathsheba, right?—and then basically murders her husband. And this guy is one of our heroes.”
“Beau, let's say I hear you raped three little girls. And now here you are at Ivanwald. What would I think of you, Beau?”
Beau shrank into the cushions. “Probably that I'm pretty bad?”
“No, Beau. I wouldn't. Because I'm not here to judge you. That's not my job. I'm here for only one thing.” “Jesus?” Beau said. David smiled and winked.
“Genghis was a man with a vision. He conquered”... "He devastated nearly everything. His enemies? He beheaded them.”
when Genghis entered a defeated city he would call in the local headman and have him stuffed into a crate. Over the crate would be spread a tablecloth, and on the tablecloth would be spread a wonderful meal. “And then, while the man suffocated, Genghis ate, and he didn't even hear the man's screams.” David still stood on the couch, a finger in the air. “Do you know what that means?” He was thinking of Christ's parable of the wineskins. “You can't pour new into old,”... “Isn't that great?” David said. “That's the way everything in life happens. If you're a person known to be around Jesus, you can go and do anything. And that's who you guys are. When you leave here, you're not only going to know the value of Jesus, you're going to know the people who rule the world. It's about vision.
The late Indonesian president Suharto and Somalia's bloodthirsty strongman Siad Barre were "brothers" of the Family. They prayed with congressmen, oilmen and arms dealers. Later some lucrative business was done. It was after hearing that Suharto had killed around 100,000 of his own citizens, that "The Family" knew he was "their kind of guy" and helped him kill as many as 1.8 million.
