Firefighters Appalled at 9/11 Billboards
pensitoreview.com — International Association of Firefighters press release: “There’s a big difference between honoring and remembering the fallen – fire fighters and civilians – and shamelessly plastering the image of the burning Twin Towers on a purely political billboard with an offensive statement currying favor for or against a political party."

- MJG2007, on 07/20/2008, -19/+212I can't blame them. Especially considering that we had at least 6 years of a republican majority in the congress and almost a year of a republican in the White House on 9/11.
So blaming the democrats is insane.- doctorfungi, on 07/21/2008, -52/+20Considering that between the 1993 attacks (on the exact same buildings, by the exact same people) and 9/11 you had a Democrat President for 7 years who didn't take action after the 1993 WTC bombings, the 1998 Embassy bombings or the 2000 USS Cole bombings against those responsible - I'd say that it would be more insane to blame a Republican than a Democrat.
That being said, blaming a political party for 9/11 is nonsense all together. Politicians aren't intelligence analysts.- PhilLesh69, on 07/21/2008, -8/+26You are an ideologically polarized and confused person.
Have you not heard of Richard Clark? Have you not heard of the Project for a New American Century's "On Rebuilding America's Defenses" where they outline their plans and explicitly say that in order to be able to enact their plans, there must be a "catastrophic and catalyzing event, like a new pearl harbor"?
Clinton did make a few mistakes, some of them probably even intentional, in his reaction to terrorist attacks. He stalled, while playing golf, to give the order to launch a tomahawk cruise missile against Bin Laden in 1998. Sure. But he is just another politician, and he knows who his masters are.
Doctorfungi, stop being a politically polarized fool, and start thinking like an American citizen.
Not one of these politicians on either side of the political dialectic are working for our best interests, they aren't trying to protect us, they simply want us to be afraid of some threat, and to argue against the other portion of society, so they can go on with their power and control and the handing out government favors to those people and corporations who can make a lot of money so they can, in turn, continue contributing to their campaigns.
McCain, Obama, Bush, Gore, Clinton, it doesn't really matter.
Stop buying into all of that *****. - bashar129, on 07/21/2008, -6/+9Oh yes, it was all Clinton's fault, if only that Democrat had stopped bin Laden when he had the chance 9/11 would have never happened. /sarc
I don't understand why republicans always try to blame Clinton for all their problems. 9/11 wasn't the fault of one president, or just one administration. It is the cause of a long line of failures and bad decisions. Now remind me, which president gave weapons to Osama bin Laden, had the CIA train his troops, and called the Mujihadeen "freedom fighters"? I'll give you a hint. Starts with R and rhymes with onald Reagan.
But oh no, let's just ignore that fact and just go on blaming Clinton for everything. - doctorfungi, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3PhilLesh69,
I have read "Rebuilding America's Defenses" by PNAC. If you had, you'd see that their agenda has been FAR from reached, and has actually been diverted from. They did not have a global war on terrorism in mind at all. Their objective was to rebuild the cold-war era defenses to protect from a superpower, not a terrorist force. The actual plan involved missile shields, larger armies etc. They also wanted to abandon the F35 project as it was costing too much and wasn't helping reaching this goal.
You seem to have missed my point. I didn't say Clinton was to blame. I said that blaming either Clinton or Bush is a stupid form of logic. What I did say, however, is that if you were to follow that logic, Clinton has more on his plate than Bush.
Bashar129,
I did NOT say it was "Clinton's fault". Stop misrepresenting me with your straw man fallacious nonsense. I pretty much said the same thing as you said. You can't put the blame of 9/11 on one person. My point is that if you were to make that mistake, I fail to see how you could end up concluding Bush was more to blame than Clinton.
What you just did however, was say that no administration was to blame, and followed that by blaming Reagan.
Can't you see how hypocritical you're being? - bashar129, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1@doctorfungi
-"you had a Democrat President for 7 years who didn't take action"
-"I'd say that it would be more insane to blame a Republican than a Democrat." (by Democrat, you essentially mean Clinton)
"I did NOT say it was "Clinton's fault"." You may have not said it outright, but that was the picture you were painting.
We both did say that it isn't the problem of one administration. But you, however were saying that Clinton is more to blame than Bush. I was pointing out the fact, why do you only stop the blame train at Clinton? Because he is your scapegoat, the one person who can take the blame off of a Republican and pin it on a Democrat. Blame can be pointed back even farther to more Presidents, probably even farther than Reagan. I just used Reagan as an example because if anyone is MOST to blame, it is him. - PhilLesh69, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1doctorfungi,
read "The Pentagon's New Map", then. If you still believe that PNAC was planning only to build a large land army for a fight with China, or whatever, that book will shed some light on the other parts of their plans.
The overriding goal of PNAC is American Hegemony. They are actively pursuing that to this day. While they didn't necessarily mention Iraq explicitly in the PNAC document, there was active planning in their think tanks and at the pentagon for a half dozen years regarding invading Iraq and building superbases there, which was especially accelerated after Saudi Arabia kicked us out after 9/11.

28% think Bush is doing a good job. The other 72% gravely overestimate a President's ability and responsibility to fix ***** when it goes bad. - PawnsOfJoshua, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7@dexter
It is not the president's ability to fix problems that concerns me, it's his ability to prevent them. In Bush's case, its more his eager willingness to cause problems that 72% of people find unsettling. So just jump of the George Bush republican fellatio bandwagon already, mmk? - dexter411, on 07/21/2008, -3/+3What problems did he cause? The war that the House and Senate voted in favor of? The economic problems caused by left-wing pandering to lower interest rates so that people can borrow beyond their means? High fuel costs because of runaway inflation brought about by the Fed?
Apparently, the only 72% in this discussion is the 72% of your brain that must be missing to make these kinds of leap in logic. But go ahead and lay it out for me. - nomadxx7, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3@dexter411
The war that the House and Senate voted in favor of? A war that when Senator Plame tried to deny that Iraq was trying to get uranium from Niger and had his CIA op wife outed? Oh and that the people responsible were from Bush's inner circle (Libby, Karl Rove, possibly even Cheney). Or that Cheney was the head of Halliburton and they seemed to just HAPPEN to get no-bid contracts for Iraq or that Blackwater's CEO (Erik Prince) is a major contributor to the Republican party.
The economic problems caused by left-wing pandering to lower interest rates so that people can borrow beyond their means? Not caused by Bush but it seems that people at the Fed and other institutions didn't care that people were over-borrowing (i.e. remember the borrow on margin that helped lead to the collapse during the Depression? Same ***** different sector). Also why are my tax dollars going to go help bail out these greedy bastards that helped get us in the pickle?
High fuel costs because of runaway inflation brought about by the Fed? You mean an institution that is privately owned and yet gets to print our currency for us with interest? Like an exponential layer of debt with every dollar that make? So when they want more money all they have to do is print more money, get more money back in interest on the currency and also help with inflation? This one is the Congress' fault and should never have been allowed to go to a private entity.
So yes Bush didn't cause the world to collapse but with his current circle of friends (Wolfowitz, Libby, Rove, Cheney, Prince) there is a perfect storm brewing that allows Bush and his buddies to grant contracts within their circle, allow things to happen without consequence, and helps lead us down a dark chapter in our nations history.
If you truly believe that Bush had nothing to do with the current state of affairs I commend you. I see him and his buddies for what they truly are. A cancerous lump on this great nation that no Republican or Democrat has the balls to cut off and remove from office. You know the problem with cancer? When you leave it to fester and grow it ultimately leads to sever consequences and possible death.
Oh and I do love the little tidbit about how Bush has run EVERY company he has been a part of into the ground. And yet he is running the largest company in the world.... THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. - PhilLesh69, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3nomadxx7, there's no senator plame. Ambassador Joe Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, was outed by someone in the Bush administration.
It's not worth debating with someone like dexter411. Anyone who would argue that 72% of the country is wrong and the small group of sycophants is right, is just a blindly ideological sycophant. - nomadxx7, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3Thanks Phil. Sort of like the saying "Don't argue with an idiot, some people might not be able to tell the difference."
- dexter411, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1"The war that the House and Senate voted in favor of?"
Yep. Bring in whatever political hearsay you want, I don't defend it, but don't conveniently shift from facts to gossip.
"Or that Cheney was the head of Halliburton and they seemed to just HAPPEN to get no-bid contracts for Iraq or that Blackwater's CEO (Erik Prince) is a major contributor to the Republican party."
Name me another company equipped and prepared to work on any of the projects that Halliburton got a no-bid contract for. Also, specifically cite the project. I assume that if you want to make these corruption charges, that you call it corruption because someone more qualified or cheaper wanted the same job...
"Not caused by Bush but it seems that people at the Fed and other institutions didn't care that people were over-borrowing"
The first part is all that matters. It's the responsibility of the people to not over borrow; the government isn't a babysitter. Also, I agree with you; I have no idea why my tax dollars go to bail out banks. Similarly, I hate Obama's plan to bail out irresponsible home owners while I planned ahead enough to stay on top of my payments.
"High fuel costs because of runaway inflation brought about by the Fed? You mean an institution that is privately owned and yet gets to print our currency for us with interest?"
Why the argumentative tone? I agree with you here again... My entire point here is that blaming Bush for the state of the country is overestimating his influence and power; you don't think it's a bit reminiscent of just looking for someone to blame?
"Anyone who would argue that 72% of the country is wrong and the small group of sycophants is right, is just a blindly ideological sycophant."
Go ahead and look up the percentage of the country with a college education. I'll wait. - nomadxx7, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1@dexter411

The point is HOW do you know who is qualified for these jobs if you don't put it out to bid. How do you know we got a good deal. I don't think having Halliburton tell soldiers that they can't put 50 fricken cents in to do a load of laundry that Halliburton is charging the American taxpayer $100 a load to do is good business sense. But hey when you aren't paying the contractors out of your pocket and it's out of the pockets of a silence American public, I guess any price you charge is good enough.
And I'm trying to point out that though Bush may not be the cause of, he is most definitely involved in some way - dexter411, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1"The point is HOW do you know who is qualified for these jobs if you don't put it out to bid."
In other words, you have no idea if this is actually corruption and are just crying foul because it happens to be politically convenient. Why was there a no-bid offered? I don't know. Could be that people working in the government had expertise in the industry and knew that it would be a waste of time to say, "Three months to get this contract... go!" when they knew there could only be one company with the resources to pull it off.
The rest of your post just tries to appeal to emotion because you're showing how little you know about this topic, so I'll just nod my head and smile. - nomadxx7, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1Sure I don't know much because I didn't go to war, etc. But I just find it weird that given that the contractors in Iraq (working for KBR or Halliburton) that you seem to think is very qualified is now being investigated for using sub-contractors with no electrical experience and yet are installing electricity in our bases. It's funny that these sub-contractors don't speak English and yet have the know how to install these systems. Oh and that there is documented cases where they weren't properly grounded and are killing our soldiers from electrocutions. I just still find it weird that you think I'm basing this off emotion and yet documentaries state that when Halliburton/KBR need more money/toys they just take perfectly alright equipment, put it in a burn pit and torch it. So I don't think that Halliburton is the most qualified. I'll nod my head at you and smile since you have this belief that Halliburton and BushCo are great guys.

Are you from Texas?- santaliqueur, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1No, but tree hugging pussies annoy me. What does Texas have to do with anything? Just so you know, there are non-Democrat people from other states too. I'm in Massachusetts, which is as blue as can be.
- kidathinnes, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1That's just a popular saying of party voting republicans in Texas. Since you don't live in Texas and don't feel that way than it doesn't matter.
Also, people who let tree hugging pussies annoy them have there priorities out of whack.
- awtripp, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9Why wouldn't you vote for a Democrat? I'm just curious if you get scared of the label or if there's a logical reason.

- nastronomical, on 07/21/2008, -38/+3The families of soldiers are equally appalled that the left are using their dead love ones as anti-war propaganda.
- jackieblu, on 07/21/2008, -2/+10That's *****! The soldiers, and their families know that the Republicans used them, and are still using them! They are not taking care of them when they come home, and of course they also sent them into combat ill prepared! You have your facts ass-backward!
- SquigglyP, on 07/21/2008, -2/+21I love how no one in this country can admit it when their little political 'team' makes a mistake. Instead they just try to point out some other negative thing about the other 'team' or come up with some weak excuse.
The guy who put up this billboard is a ***** douche, and that would still apply if it said "Republican" instead. - theredwhyno, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4Anti-war propaganda? Are you ***** kidding me? If you want to talk about using people's dead loved ones as propaganda, on whose shoulders does the responsibility rest for relentlessly using 9/11 photos to try and sway votes? In terms of political capital, 9/11 was the biggest cash cow the Right could ever have hoped for, and they've all but expended it...
- richbleak, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Yes, pointing out that soldiers being killed is a downside of the war is "propaganda". You, sir, are a douchebag.

- str3ama, on 07/21/2008, -1/+569/11 is now a cheap way of targeting people's emotional responses. I mean you have movies (Reign Over Me) that used it as a plot device, and then you have these coin creators that unceremoniously release "collector coins"..it sorta cheapens and degrades the seriousness that was the attack. You don't exactly see commemorative coins being created for the holocaust, and rightly so - because it's not something to celebrate.
- MasteRR, on 07/21/2008, -0/+16I'll sell you a mint condition holocaust commemorative coin with the picture of a Jew for the low low price of $19.99. Remember, this is real Liberian currency.
Yeah, those things piss me off too.- dexter411, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3$20. For you? $19.99.
- BNash577, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Did you see Reign Over Me? Yeah, 9/11 was a plot device, but it's not like the movie was a comedy and they were bashing it. You can't just ignore an event like that...or you turn into one of the ignorant bastards that think the holocaust never happened. And I'm not an advocate for commemorative coins anything...that ***** is ridiculous.
- tehsilentcircus, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2No one is saying "pretend it never happened." Just stop using it as a brand name or marketing ploy (or as a central theme to a presidential campaign see: Guillani), because if you ask me that is worse than just feigning ignorance and forgetting it ever happened, it's just downright distasteful.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3It doesn't need to be a plot device, many movies just just similar 'imagery' to make people recall the emotion of 9/11.
War of the Worlds
Cloverfield
The Dark Knight
etc.- dexter411, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2War of the Worlds had similar 'imagery?' That H.G. Wells is such an opportunist...
- merreborn, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1...So, every time a building blows up in a movie, it's a 9/11 reference?
You know they blew buildings up in movies all the time before 9/11, right?

- jackieblu, on 07/21/2008, -9/+30Are these people smoking crack... 9/11 occurred on Bush's watch, and I'm pretty sure he's a Republican! They missed and/or ignored all the signs! Then they have the nerve to stated that if something happened (God forbid), it would be good for McCain - which makes no sense to any sane person! McCain needs to release his complete Navy record, I'll bet it's less than flattering, oh but don't get me wrong he's a hero for serving, he's just not a foreign policy expert! In fact, the guy appears to suffer from PTSD, and some sort of head trauma,
he did crash 5 Navy planes!- cutchyacokov, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4PTSD and head trauma, eh? I thought it was just an extreme case of old.

- locojones, on 07/21/2008, -9/+36If you respect that we live in America, then you have to also respect the First Amendment, which gives this guy the freedom to advertise how he wishes, without regard for taste or morality.
- barc0de, on 07/21/2008, -1/+47Absolutely, and I will defend his right to say/sing what he wants. But I also have the right to call the guy an asshat.
- GassyTurd, on 07/21/2008, -7/+0I wish we had the right to hang him from that sign. Freedom!
- cutchyacokov, on 07/21/2008, -0/+30He is free to advertise and we are free to criticize. It's still in poor taste.
- clorby, on 07/21/2008, -0/+18"he shouldn't have said it" is a completely different argument from "he shouldn't be allowed to say it."
criticism != censorship.
that said, the guy is wrong on many levels, but i'm not sure if this attention is good or bad. he's sure getting way more mileage out of those advertising dollars. - tehsilentcircus, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1Sure, that is true. But the message being sent by the advertisement/statement is a complete and utter lie by associating the dems and 9/11, anyone with 1/2 a brain knows this. Whoever allowed him to put it up should be the ones getting the grunt of the criticism for this. Even though he is an obvious conservative nut job who seems to know absolutely nothing about the party he stands for.
I know its a business, but at some point things seriously cross the line. Things like this could stir future clients to someone else because they don't want to associate themselves with an advertising company that allows this stuff to go up. Just seems like a bad business move on account of the advertising company. But it's apparently business as usual now a days. It's all about the money and a lack of integrity abound.- MMMcripsyBACON, on 07/25/2008, -0/+0This billboard is tasteless and stupid. However, the WTC was bombed during Clinton's administration 1993 and no protocol was taken to insure this kind of thing would happen again. Weak responses to terrorism translates as weakness and vulnerability to more terrorist attacks.
- barc0de, on 07/21/2008, -1/+47Absolutely, and I will defend his right to say/sing what he wants. But I also have the right to call the guy an asshat.

- Zippo, on 07/21/2008, -2/+20How can any Republican supporter still believe that the Republicans stand to defend the Constitution. Over the past eight years, Bush has been using the Constitution to wipe his ass.
- dexter411, on 07/21/2008, -3/+3Yeah, seriously! What we need is a President to follow through with the Constitution's goal of redistributing wealth through taxes, setting up universal health care, and following the hard-and-fast principles of economic isolationism.
- PawnsOfJoshua, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1Can you give me one lucid reason why redistributing wealth is a bad thing? How many people suffer due to the existence social programs? On the other hand, how many people suffer due to lack of social programs? Does your right to be a greedy, money-worshiping elitist carry more constitutional weight than someone else's right to ***** eat dinner? Let's apply a little common sense and how about a little humanism as well, and stop trying to justify flagrantly selfish elitist mentalities.
- dexter411, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Well... I was born in the Soviet Union where the state's position was to redistribute wealth. Why it's a bad thing? BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE STATE'S WEALTH TO REDISTRIBUTE. If the US government wants to take ownership of my money and property, what's the point of me working hard and making money? Capitalism, which is why America is the most prosperous country in the world, is based on everyone trying to do best FOR THEMSELVES. What you're advocating is socialism.
"Does your right to be a greedy, money-worshiping elitist carry more constitutional weight than someone else's right to ***** eat dinner?"
I have a right to take care of myself and my own family. Why you assume that it's also my responsibility as a tax payer to foot the bill of someone who's less intelligent, less diligent, and less educated is beyond me. Let it be clear that charity is great (and I can guarantee you I donated more last year to the Red Cross than you did), but it's not the place of Washington DC to force me to do it.
Now how about you give me one lucid reason as to how discouraging productivity from the most successful people in this country isn't a bad thing. You know all those social programs you like? Well considering that 5% of the country pays 90% of all taxes, what'll happen if they up and leave in response to these ridiculous left-wing ideals?
- dexter411, on 07/21/2008, -3/+3Yeah, seriously! What we need is a President to follow through with the Constitution's goal of redistributing wealth through taxes, setting up universal health care, and following the hard-and-fast principles of economic isolationism.
- pjpark, on 07/21/2008, -14/+4Buried as inaccurate. A labor union is appalled at the 9/11 billboards. No surprises there.
- halligan00, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3The IAFF and the member firefighters are usually at odds on political issues: IAFF - liberal democratic all the way; the IAFFs members - generally more 'good ole boy' conservative. It's just that the actual members don't usually get involved enough in the national organization to really affect it's outlook.
- lorenzoamigo, on 07/21/2008, -10/+9I wonder if the digg members outraged at this are the same ones who dug the jesus is a c*nt t-shirt under the guise of free speech.
- Ovalteen, on 07/21/2008, -1/+9This is a different. People are free to call jesus whatever they want, and this guy is perfectly free to ask people not to vote for democrats. There's no problem with advocating one party over another. What is a problem is somehow insinuating that September 11 is somehow the fault of the democratic party when there is no evidence to support that claim. It would be like if your house burnt down, killing several of your family, and somebody put up a billboard with a picture of your charred house and the slogan "Don't vote for lorenzoamigo". That's not cool.
- czeiszperger, on 07/21/2008, -4/+3so I guess free speech is ok as long as you agree with what they are saying. Its plain and simple free speech is free speech even for dumbass morons singing stupid songs
- Ovalteen, on 07/21/2008, -1/+51) No, that's not what I said. I don't agree with his political views, but as I said, he is perfectly free to say "don't vote for democrats".
2) No, it's not plain and simple. Does the word "libel" mean anything to you? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libel). You might be able to say whatever you want, but you can still be held responsible for your words (or actions). Why don't you photoshop an image of Ronald McDonald raping kids with the words "Don't eat at McDonalds", slap it on a billboard, and time how long it takes for the lawyers to sic you. Tell me how your "free speech" argument (which is really freedom of expression in this context) stands up. - eriksanerd, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2You see, this is the great thing about freedom of speech. We're all allowed to call this guy a moron, and he's allowed to act like one. And czeiszperger is allowed to say we're hypocrites(regardless of how accurate the claim is).
Isn't this freedom thing fun?
