I am not for amnesty period.
I am however for the act of ICE raids on Illegal Employers. I believe that for every Illegal Alien the Illegal Employer should be fined $10,000.00 and be held financially responsible for all costs incurred by the American Citizen to House, feed, incarcerate and repatriate said illegal alien to his or her country of origin….If the Illegal employer re offends then the fines and penalties should double each time.
Self deportation would occur thus shooting holes in the mass deportation theory - LonewackoDotCom, on 05/24/2008, -1/+7The article, such as it is, ignores attrition. Under that plan increased enforcement and reduced non-emergency services would cause many or most illegal aliens to return home.
- RHMiller, on 05/24/2008, -2/+4I don't think you read the entire article..which ended like this:
"So, here are some proposed steps. They are in order:
1. Seal the borders immediately. In 2008, as a developed state, there is no excuse not to have control over the people that flow through our borders.
2. End the incentives (welfare benefits and, most importantly, illegal employment)
3. Give all illegals one year to come forward. No extensions.
4. Process the masses that come forward.
5. Identify and deport the remainder. "
I'm pretty sure #'s 1,2, and 5 would each contribute to attrition, no?

- aki009, on 05/24/2008, -1/+6Easiest solution to the illegal immigrant topic is to modify the birth-right citizenship in the US. That concept made sense 100+ years ago when international travel took months or years, but it doesn't scale to the world of today with the easy travel options over any given distance.
Dropping birth right citizenship would keep illegal immigrants and their offspring outside the system until they leave or become legal immigrants. It would also address one of the biggest concerns that some have (which I don't share, but which I can understand), that over time the offspring of illegal immigrants will have negative consequences for our country. This one change would also take out a lot of the emotion that some have over the entire topic.
It seems to me that if there were no birthright citizenship, we could focus on the real question, which is how many temporary foreign workers do we need? Stamping out illegal immigration is difficult if not impossible, but we should certainly understand that in many industries we have more work than we have people to do them. We can choose to ignore that fact, and face the export of those jobs to countries where labor policies are more relaxed, or provide a flexible and realistic system for addressing the issue. - RHMiller, on 05/24/2008, -2/+4Very well argued, thanks. That idea has legs and should be looked into. However, it would require a constitutional amendment unlikely to happen under Democratic leadership. Why alienate (pun intended) your own base?

Make it tough to be here and they will self-deport. It's already happening in places where they toughened up like New Mexico and Oklahoma.- RHMiller, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3Perhaps you just glanced it over and didn't read Part II. That's what I usually do too :) It ended like this...

- franklymister, on 05/24/2008, -2/+7If you're pro-immigration (as I am), then you should be vehemently AGAINST amnesty and illegal immigration.
Illegal immigrants stand in the way of the people who have followed all the rules and waited patiently to immigrate legally. They cast an unfortunate shadow on all the legal immigrants, especially from Central America, who are viewed with suspicion even though they are here legally.
If we really do need all twelve million illegal immigrants here, because unemployment is at zero percent and there are no other people willing to do their jobs, then let's raise the quotas legitimately. Let's really debate this in the Congress, and get the legislators to stand up and say that we need higher immigration numbers. Let's protect everyone under our labor laws, so that employers have to pay minimum wage, provide benefits, and treat everyone equally.
The companies and people that hire illegal immigrants don't want them to become legal, because then they'd have to treat them fairly. I read of one worker from the meat packing plant in Iowa that was raided recently talking about how he lost three fingers at work - and yet the company didn't do anything for him.
Illegal immigration hurts America, and it hurts the migrants themselves. It only helps greedy, corrupt businesses.
Amnesty is wrong. It punishes people who follow the rules, and rewards those who break them. Raise the quotas if we need to, but don't give anyone special treatment. - Digitalfilm43, on 05/25/2008, -2/+4Is there any way we could trade illegal immigrants for oil?
- RHMiller, on 05/25/2008, -2/+1You may be on to something here. ;)
- Erich100, on 05/25/2008, -1/+4A nice piece of fence walking. All illegals must leave now.
If it is not possible to track and deport them it is equally impossible to assess which ones are deemed fit to stay. Rounding them up and deporting all of them is ridiculous. Making the employers actually pay for their hiring of illegals, cutting all public services and removing the children of the people who are here illegally from public schools will get the job done in short order. The round ups that are taking place right now are a show for all to see, thinking they are fooling the American people into thinking the government is actually listening to the people. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Ever since the shamnesty bill was rejected, because of the over whelming reaction of the American people, Congress and the Senate have been trying to pass it in pieces, attaching parts to other
unrelated pieces of legislation.
Let's not be fooled by any of this rhetoric.
If corporate America was paying the same price the American worker has been paying for these illegals to be here, They would be all gone within a week.
Do some research and you will find that illegals are not here because of our government's kindness and caring about the living standard of foreigners. The American people are being scammed.- RHMiller, on 05/25/2008, -3/+1"A nice piece of fence walking."-You

- Qong, on 05/25/2008, -3/+1There is no reason other than ignorance for anyone to ever consider deportation an option.
Immigrants, whether they arrived in our country legally or not, came here for the opportunities that our country provides to its people. With a focused dedication and a will to work hard, a person can truly make something of themselves and provide a better life for their family. That is why immigrants come to the United States.
All of our family's have done it; my family came here in the early 20th century, your family came here whenever they came here, and our neighbors families did the same. They came here because they realized how great of a country the United States of America is and they wanted to become a part of it.
The legality of them coming here means nothing. If that many people are coming here illegally, then it means that it is far too difficult for them to come here legally. That is the bottom line.- RHMiller, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2"There is no reason other than ignorance for anyone to ever consider deportation an option." - You

You have a habit of make sweeping statements without any real arguments to back them up. Remember what happens when we "ass-u-me".

- ManOfVirtues, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2There is only one way to solve this problem;
- Seal the border, without an open border it will be much harder for new illegal immigrants to enter the country. Bring our National Guard members home and give them the job they were meant to do and protect this country. A guard tower manned, armed, and authorized to treat any person or persons crossing the border as an occupying force and respond as necessary.
- Increase fines and impose prison time for hiring, housing, or providing services to illegal immigrants.
- Give a One year warning to currently occupying illegal immigrants to come forward. Surrender and be returned to your home country free of charge or criminal penalty.
- After that one year is up, first time offender are arrested and returned to their country or origin. second time offenders over the age of 18 are processed and executed. - Jbrownrbd, on 05/30/2008, -0/+0I think the idea of killing someone because they want to live in this country is ridiculous. That would make us no better than some of these other countries Americans speak bad about. (Like China for instance) The best way to get rid of the illegal aliens is to not make it profitable for BIG BUSINESSES to have them here. The American people are being SCAMMED just like Erich says. We have 300 plus million people in the United States, you mean to tell me America can't find anyone to do Agricultural work. That's BS!! Americans just don't want to work for slave wages. The right thing to do, would be to fine these companies that hire illegal workers big money, again just like Erich is talking about. If the companies had to go through raids and big fines you would see how fast they change their stance on illegal immigration.
- Jbrownrbd, on 05/30/2008, -0/+0After reading the article on your blog, I can tell that you must be a right-wing nut job. You probably want 100 years of occupation in Iraq and to keep the tax cuts for the rich.
America is not incapable of expelling illegal immigrants, its just that the big corporations are in control. WE THE PEOPLE have to take the country back. Just go to www.NumbersUSA.org and watch the video, to see what illegal immigration is doing to this country. You might change your irrational stance on this issue.
