lessig.org — Lessig gives a 20 minute talk on why he supports Obama for president. Very lucid and informative arguments!

- jackelsmack, on 02/05/2008, -6/+117If you like Lawrence Lessig here's another great reason to support Obama's campaign: They went directly to Lessig with their technology policy to get his feedback. This strongly suggests that in an Obama administration, Lessig or Lessig-minded people would be in charge of federal technology policy. Us "Internet Culture" people have been wandering in the wilderness this whole time, and in 2009 we could be *running* federal policy. Now that's something to hope for!
- keane, on 02/05/2008, -7/+20what would be a dream team administration?
President- Obama
Vice- Gravel
Attorney General- Edwards
Secretary of Defense- Clark
Secretary of Education- Lessig
Secretary of Labor- Kucinich
Secretary of Health- Dean
Homeland Security- Biden
Energy- Richardson- gpageau, on 02/05/2008, -18/+6Only if your goal is to bankrupt the country. Not that the current administration and its $3 trillion budget isn't doing the same thing.
- Refrag, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Exactly how do you think they'd run the country further into debt?
Just extracting ourselves from Iraq would go a very long way to putting our budget back on track. I certainly don't see any indication that the people Keane mentioned would not be able to balance our budget.- gpageau, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Both the Republicans and Democrats, as reflected in my post, are spending too much. Certainly spending less on foreign troop deployment is a start -- not only Iraq, but also Western Europe and Japan -- as well as reduced foreign aid as a whole. Since 1975, the U.S. has sent $50 billion to Egypt alone.
None of those candidates, and most of the current crop of Republicans, are advocating return to sensible spending policies relating to investing in our own educational system, our own renewable resources and our own job market. That was the point i was making.

- motivatedmama, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1A little study is in order. Obama not only strongly supports education (he is a Professor after all) http://www.barackobama.com/issues/education/
but he has outlined many ways to improve in all the areas you mentioned. What amazed me in reading T.A.O.H. was that before Obama takes on revamping a program or initiating a new one, he looks to see which programs can be streamlined to generate the funds. The FIRST thing he asks is, where will the money come from? And is that so surprising? This is a very intelligent and strongly principled man. He does not just throw out ideas that he thinks the public will gobble up. No, he has already walked through the creation, funding and red tape issues in his head.

- gamasutra, on 02/05/2008, -2/+36Hillary is the democratic version of Karl Rove in a pantsuit. She plays politics as well as anyone and swiftboats her opponents. I don't trust her to make the right judgment and stand up for principle even when it is not the popular thing to do - as was the case with Iraq. Her pandering to lobbyists is just the final straw that broke the camels back.

- phr33ksho, on 02/05/2008, -3/+20He is so well spoken, and clearly very intelligent. I always love reading Lessig's essays, and this is as good as anything he has done. I wish this video could be shown on major news / tv networks, show this to any Hillary supporters!
- werddrew, on 02/05/2008, -0/+3I went on my facebook, found all of the Hillary "fans" I could find and posted it on their wall. Not as an insult, but as a genuine, "please take a look at this and hit me up with your thoughts."
- jamesalfaro, on 02/05/2008, -7/+22Obama truly inspires people to want to see real change in Washington and abroad. I believe he is the only candidate that can unite the Democrats and Republicans to end the decades of corruption and dirty politics we have seen in the Bush/Clinton era.

Best of luck to Obama on super Tuesday. - shazam, on 02/05/2008, -1/+30Deeply thoughtful analysis on the differences between Hillary and Barack, as well as good examples of "Rovean" tactics as recently employed by the Clinton team. Lessig is as lucid as ever and here, I daresay, inspirational.
- TheBogie, on 02/05/2008, -1/+10Hilliary is ambitious to the point of shamelessness. How anyone can't see directly through her facade is beyond me. It surprises me that even one person in a poll would say they would vote for her.
Obama is a remarkable speaker. Hilliary speaks like a robot, and she simply CAN'T go off of her script. She won't give an interview unless the questions are given to her ahead of time.- jsebrech, on 02/05/2008, -0/+3If you google for "why I support hillary", you can find some explanations of the thinking behind it. Mostly it boils down to (a) she's a woman, or (b), she's the "safe" choice (where safe is defined as veteran politician, or predictable policy-wise). I can understand why people would chose (b).
The way I see it, the choice between clinton and obama is a choice between safety and hope. With Clinton, you know today what her policy for her entire term will be like; and that can be a safety blanket for people. With obama, the future is less certain, but you do know that unlike Clinton he represents a chance for fundamental change, and that taps into the hope of a lot of people for the possibility of a new dawn for america.

- aboutlogin, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I really wish all of that mattered, in the end there is no way hillary is going to lose. the powers that be will turn the world upside down and rotate it backwards before that happens. obama should win, but unfortunately, this is not a democracy.

- ronocdh, on 02/05/2008, -18/+2Dude I love LL, glad the video got made, but man is it horrible. The man has extraordinary presentation abilities and then he makes a piece of junk like this? It was really hard to watch must past "policies r strong." Was he doing this thing in realtime or something?
- ambiguus, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2It's called the Lessig method and has gone over well in many settings. It's useful when you treat your presentations as a visual highlighter for your talk. It's not my cup of tea, but I think it can still be very effective.
- kurtu5, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Since when did the Lessig method start looking like teen chat?
I think he is trying to appeal to the younger voters with this sort of style.

The reason no one listens and calls you a kook, is that they only care about the immediate future. Matters of right and wrong do not enter it. So you are simply wasting your links. Their minds are already made up. They will continue to think that government will save them if they can only get their guy in.
You and I probably know the only thing a government program does is to keep increasing its own scope with out bound. You and I know that these elections are a sham to make the people think they are choosing. They don't and they don't really care.

- norsurfit, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1Lawrence Lessig is a very well known constitutional law and cyberlaw professor at Stanford Law School.
He has been very influential in changing ideas about expanding copyright laws, and opposing subtle government corruption.

- brickbat, on 02/05/2008, -0/+41To those people that don't know who Lessig is, don't worry - It's not your fault. The less you know about him ,the better the job he is doing. He is protecting your internet freedom. He is a key driver of both the Creative Commons and The Electronic Frontier Foundation - two of the most important organisations protecting freedom on the internet. We all owe a lot to Lessig and HIS moral courage even though most of us have never heard of him. I have to admit that this president and his illegal activities with the telecoms have really set things back a lot but don't expect anyone other than Lessig and the EFF to take action to hold them accountable.

Go Obama - staxx202, on 02/05/2008, -9/+1Hillary and Obama have little or no differences in their arguments, so you should vote based on appearance? If that's the case, they still shouldn't get a vote after their appearance in the debates having their arguments destroyed by the logical candidates.. and after seeing Hillary cackling. Obama's only different in that he acts less eager, but has 'no choice'. Puppets vote for puppets.
- sotloo, on 02/05/2008, -0/+3You are correct, little difference in their arguments during debate yes but their platforms are certainly quite different
- staxx202, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1Really? (just to humor you, if their platforms were so vastly different wouldn't their arguments be as well?)
Looking over their platforms side by side, I don't see it. Anything you can point out? The war's the most I care about, and while they've both listed 'ending the war in Iraq' as their main priorities, they've said Iran is next because they might build a nuclear missile(fyi U.S. has over 10,000) in the next 5-10 years. Iraq all over again.- JavanSClark, on 02/05/2008, -2/+1 and just to humor you.. RP loses in '08. QQ

- jeffmurphy, on 02/05/2008, -2/+2"So let's start with character. In particular I'm thinking about a certain kind of moral courage. The question of whether the candidate is calculating in the face of right, or whether in the face of knowing what's right or consistent with his or her principles, he or she chooses that answer regardless of the consequences."
Recognizing that "right" is a point of view, is Lessig saying that Bush is therefor a good choice because Bush stubbornly chooses to do what he thinks is "right" "regardless of the consequences"?- JavanSClark, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1No. I think in this instance, He is saying that Obama's sense of right, prevails over his sense of expediency, and his principals are in tune with the authors. Thus his decision to endorse.

- acudoc, on 02/05/2008, -2/+3Did he perhaps mention that by making government bigger, even a well-intentioned government, you are paving "the road to serfdom" and helping to create a nation dependent on subsidies? Probably not, as that would require the ability to look beyond one election year. Also, did he happen to mention that government cannot create wealth, no matter how many idealistic politicians get elected. It can only take the wealth created by individual effort and redistribute it. If these two facts are not emphasized in a candidate's campaign, he is nothing more than a demagogue.
- babar77, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2As opposed to the wage slavery that happened with a small government and free market in the late 1800s? There needs to be balance. We can't have a completely socialist state where everything is given to us, but completely free unregulated markets is not the answer either.
- forgottenhope, on 02/05/2008, -1/+2Economy, monentary policy, these are not in the scope of socialist who want universal health care. Anyone proclaiming to get universal health care is a joke. Social security was ***** up beyond measure do to the governments involvment. It was congress who decided to spend a lot of the social security people had been saving.
We should not rely on or force people to put there retirement in the government. Seeing that our country doesnt raise taxes to pay for things, and that the either borrow from current funds or simply create the money out of thin our, it is surprising that people would put trust back into he government to manage every single persons healh care. Its a joke. Universal health care is a joke and people who support it are going to what, end up forcing people to be on it?
I dont need the government in my everyday life. We need less goverment. Want to talk about patriotism want to talk about founding values? Or do you want to talk about the Roman empire who collapsed becausethey distroyed their money system by creating money out of thin air that funded the expansion of the empire.

- Jordan117, on 02/05/2008, -2/+3More misleading mudslinging, exactly the thing Lessig warned people against in the video.
Obama did not vote for the original Patriot Act, as he was not in the Senate yet. The only time he did vote for it was after he led an extensive push to rewrite key parts of the act that offered greater protections for our civil liberties and beefed up provisions for common sense things like greater funding for communications tools between first responders.- rooster113, on 02/05/2008, -1/+2So the civil liberties lost in the version he voted for are warranted? if it gives greater funding for communication you are saying its justified to subvert the Constitution? and the version he voted for does just that! how about we just stop sacrificing our civil liberties and live up to the oaths of offices we hold. and what mud am i slinging? you may be right about the first vote mentioned above but the fact he voted for it at all makes that irrelevant. what about the war funding, his stance as pro military intervention or his ties to the CFR? it seems his supporters are either unaware or choose not to look at these facts.
RP08!- kurtu5, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2If you want to make an omelet you have to break a few eggs. If you want a black president, to assuage any guilt you may harbor, then you have to...."choose not to look at these facts"

- glimp7, on 02/05/2008, -3/+2I've got a prediction. Since Washington is so corrupt, and people are not inspired enough to go out and vote, Billary's going to win the 08' election. Then, when she doesn't do what Obama promised, which is to remove most or all U.S. troops Iraq, her approval will sink among Americans, and Obama will win the 2012 election.
- Yatata, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2I have a prediction:
there will be a "terrorist attack" or other kind of national disaster on the united states this year, the white house will declare marshal law, blackwater will be deployed in the streets to "maintain order", the elections will be canceled, and the US will discover that while they were watching american idol, their government was methodically working through the 10 steps to transform democracy to fascism.
don't believe me?

There is no reason to do that when only Kang and Kodos are candidates. It would be stupid. Oh they will use it to take away your nail clippers, but not to cancel the sham elections.
