Lott On Iraq: "Why Do Sunnis Kill Shiites? They All Look The Same To Me"

Why did Iraq need an iron-fisted despot to keep it from falling apart? If you can't answer this question, Mr. Lott (or any other leader), with a historically sound reason, you shouldn't be there.

      So if Lott said that liberals and conservatives both smell like chicken, and taste like chicken we could assume he is for cannibalism???

      Lott is a huge target, there is plenty to attack him on. This is a non event...

I think most everyone here can agree that Shiites and Sunnis look the same and we aren't quite sure why they're fighting. Something about Mohammed's grandchild being the rightful heir to the caliphate or some ***** like that, but I couldn't tell you why its still relevant today except that people look for any excuse to hate each other.

      I'm positive that that's not bigoted, its just honest. I'm pretty certain that people with doctorates in Middle Eastern history wouldn't be able to tell you exactly why these two groups are fighting. I think Trent Lott gets a pass.

In context, Lott is making a valid point about the ignorance and ethnocentrism of most Americans, including himself.

      I don't claim to know the whole Sunni/Shiite history. It's not a topic I studied. But I expect my elected representatives, who are waging a war in this area, to know a great deal more about it than I do. That's my problem with Lott's comments. It's not the racism, it's the pride he takes in his ignorance -- and the way he uses it to identify with the electorate.

      The basic concept that people with different opinions must look different works together with the thought that people that look different from me have a different opinion than mine.

      This is precisely the problem with the statement (and most of our political leaders' understanding of the region). They are similar *in appearance only*. In the ways that matter in their culture, they are vastly different. That we fail to grasp this simple truth is the reason we should not be trying to run things in the region.

      So, our elected officials should know everything about history, economics, legislation, law and sociology, probably a little psychology and a whole lot about debate and political theory. In their free time they should try to get reelected and be loving, well rounded family men that we can respect.

      No. That's why they hire experts. So that they can tell them what a Sunni looks like and what a Shiite looks like. The expert will still say they look the same, because they do.

      The only reason to be upset at Trent Lott for this is if you really just want to be upset at Trent Lott.

      That's not what Lott is saying. What he's saying is akin to "Baptist black people look like Presbyterian black people." He's not dividing a group by race, but by sect.

      All religions have similarities and all religions have differences. That doesn't at all, however, make all religions the same just with different names. Christianity and Mormonism are vastly different. Even the different denominations under the broad title "Christianity" have huge differences (think Pentecostal versus Catholic versus Methodist versus Southern Baptist). Likewise for the different denominations of Mormonism (Latter-day Saints). If you're still in school, I suggest taking a Intro to Religions course. Very interesting and informative stuff no matter what your religious affiliation (or lack thereof).

      For Sunni's they come to resent the Shia because the Shia are what you might think of as the "catholic islam". They have beleif's in prophets that they make into saints and they pray to them, etc. as catholics do. The Sunni on the other hand are more like you fundementalist christian. very conservative, and beleiving that god is the only one to be prayed to, except through the name of muhammad (as is with the name of christ for xtians).

      But, one still must realize this is all religious fanaticism. If there are 100,000 Sunni and 100,000 Shia in Baghdad, you have to realize that the numbers of those causing violence is only in the 100's at most. It's a small percentage of the whole. Fanatics.

      I get so sick and tired of hearing people talk about "THE Muslims" this and that. Every time an abortion clinic gets blown up we don't say "THE Christians" do we? No. And not just because of a boas toward xtianity, but because having lived so close to, or taken part of, xtianity for most or all of our lives in the U.S. we understand how there can be those on the outer edges.

      So I give pause and as not, Why do Sunnis kill Shiites - but why can't Americans just understand the situation in the middle east the way they understand things here at home?

On the other hand if you grew up with and socialized with black people (any race really, just using it as a example) you can tell the difference. Probably one of the reasons cities tend to be more for democrats and little town, USA tends to be more for republicans. In the city there's diversity of race and culture, thus the people tend to be more understanding of differences. In little town everyone is usually the same etc which anything different ,be it cultural or color, can bring a clash. Granted this isn't absolute. There's opened mined people in the country and closed mined people in the city.
      The question is "should we allow such closed mined, out of touch with the public(and its diversity) people anywhere near leadership roles in our country

      If I see a random group of people, no matter race, and then you stop me and show me pictures of people, asking whether or not they were in that group, I'd have no clue. On the other hand, if I'm with a group of friends or acquantances (no matter race) and you do the same, there's no doubt I will be able to identify those in the group.

      On this note, if someone already has the thought "I don't like (insert race) people," then they probably won't get to know anyone from that race personally, and thus won't distinguish people from that group.

    The whole "we need to put this in context" idea is to some extent irrelevant because no matter what it is ridiculous that these people are killing each other. This is just like what went on in the Balkans and Rwanda in the mid-90s. There is all this nonsense about a division between two groups of people that isn't very great, and even if it were it still wouldn't justify blowing each other up.

    Trent Lott has every right to question such a silly reason to kill people. It's completely unnecessary.

    there are three groups in iraq...one are the kurds...they dont like fighting...they just want to get as many advantage as they can from this war...and there are shiites (shi'a)...who are allies with the United States Of A'Holes against what they call terrorists...and there are sunnis which most of them are the resistance (called terrorists because they resist the occupation)...

    now the subject asks why sunnis kill shi'as...it should be why shi'as kill sunnis...no not just killing...they torture first...they use drills and such horrible tools which u have never seen not even in the scariest movies...

    lastest big thing they have done to sunnis is (BELIEVE THIS...I HAVE THE SOURCE IN ARABIC...LOOK DOWN) is kidnapping some sunni's 3 year old son and torturing him then burning him then cooking in an oven and putting him on a plate with salad...like a kabab...then putting it infront of the family's house...

    those shi'as kill sunnis just because they are sunnis...one of their group say that if u spill a sunni's blood on a shi'as grave...all his/her sins will be cleared...

    about exploding civilians...my personal thought (and also this is what the resistance say) is that it is done by those who want to make the resistance look bad...

    these things might be new to some/most of you...it is just because of ur fcuked up media...i watched the american version of cnn/abc and some others...it is totaly fcuked up...they show things really differently...wait till jazeera international starts and then see the other sides openion (if not the truth)...

    In this situation, yeah it was dumb. The fight's not about who looks different, and the guys running our country really should know what it is about.

    But I can't stand it when I get criticism because I can't tell if a person's Mexican or Chilean just by looking at them. I'm sorry for not being prejudicial.

    Iraq was the elephant in the room on Thursday morning. No matter what they say in public, they all know how badly this "war" is going... But if they pretend it's going well, especially in front of each other, then there is no need to talk about it. What's the point? It's going so great, after all, that they'd all just be wasting time talking about it!

    The point is, that the sect of Islam you belong to has nothing to do with the way you look. To suggest otherwise would put you in the same group as the Hutus of Rawanda, who butchered the Tutsis... or people that "looked like" Tutsis.
