Lott On Iraq: "Why Do Sunnis Kill Shiites? They All Look The Same To Me"
thinkprogress.org — “It’s hard for Americans, all of us, including me, to understand what ’s wrong with these people,” Sen. Trent Lott said. “Why do they hate each other? Why do Sunnis kill Shiites? How do they tell the difference? They all look the same to me."

- torifile, on 10/12/2007, -11/+115And this is the reason the US shouldn't be messing in international politics. Our leaders have no sense of history or cultural understanding. Why did Iraq need an iron-fisted despot to keep it from falling apart? If you can't answer this question, Mr. Lott (or any other leader), with a historically sound reason, you shouldn't be there.
- bigdavediode, on 10/12/2007, -7/+67Questions that should have been asked BEFORE we got involved. Retarded fake answers like "they hate our freedom" gained us absolutely nothing.
"Hey, by the way George, why do those people hate each other? George?"
"Pretty birdy!" - maize, on 10/12/2007, -33/+6You know, instead of using all sorts of methods to argue Mr. Lotts thoughts, it's just easier to call him an idiot *****.

And you do? Don't quit your day job makin those Happy Meals ;) lol
Another "genius" with all the "answers"....***** burger flippers, hairdressers and Taxi drivers all know how to "fix" all the world's ills. Ever think MAYBE there's a REASON they work at MickeyD's or drive a taxi or fix hair?
Simple *****..... - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -45/+23Lott was simply making a point that the groups who have been basically at war since the sun first rose over humanity are far more similar than they are different. If you can't see that, and are willing to twist this simple statement into something that it is not you are beyond reproach.
Politicians like you and me make a point now and then that can't be taken literally when read on some news site, unfortunately the press will spin this ***** to make it appear like it is what it isn't.
So if Lott said that liberals and conservatives both smell like chicken, and taste like chicken we could assume he is for cannibalism???
Lott is a huge target, there is plenty to attack him on. This is a non event... - sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40Uhhh... for the same reason protestants and catholics killed each other or any other two groups of religious beliefs.... is it that hard to grasp? It's a political issue based on a religious difference...
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14The only reason this is a non-event is because it's the exact kind of ***** a rational person would expect Lott to say. There is no way to spin this to make him look like an ok guy.
- Monolith2, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6ROFL, wow, i had no idea Digg was full of cultural anthropologists who can tell a sunni from a shiite on sight. Impressive, guys!
- Genthree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20God, as if Mississippi didn't already have a bad enough reputation.
- SirCharge, on 10/12/2007, -23/+7I don't quite understand what the big deal is. I think most everyone here can agree that Shiites and Sunnis look the same and we aren't quite sure why they're fighting. Something about Mohammed's grandchild being the rightful heir to the caliphate or some ***** like that, but I couldn't tell you why its still relevant today except that people look for any excuse to hate each other.
I'm positive that that's not bigoted, its just honest. I'm pretty certain that people with doctorates in Middle Eastern history wouldn't be able to tell you exactly why these two groups are fighting. I think Trent Lott gets a pass. - Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12@cliffzdude -- Well, the thing is, it's easy to see how the press could take the "They all look the same to me" comment out of context and spin it so that Lott appears to be a racist. In context, Lott is making a valid point about the ignorance and ethnocentrism of most Americans, including himself.
I don't claim to know the whole Sunni/Shiite history. It's not a topic I studied. But I expect my elected representatives, who are waging a war in this area, to know a great deal more about it than I do. That's my problem with Lott's comments. It's not the racism, it's the pride he takes in his ignorance -- and the way he uses it to identify with the electorate. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25@cliffzdude: Lott is being an idiot. Why did the French slaughter themselves in the French Revolution? Why did the Americans do the same? How did they tell the difference? They all look the same to me...
- SirCharge, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2The French revolution was a power grab by the third estate. The American revolution was also a power grab by the American colonists. They could tell the difference because one side wore uniforms and the other didn't.
- KF6BBL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@SirCharge
The fact that a member of government is dumbing down the issue to say that they all look the same is as retarded as you giving him a pass.
If I said to you that "it is hard for me to understand what is wrong with you", that makes the presumption that there is something wrong with you.
If I said that "you people all look alike" and was talking about black people here, imagine the crap I would take for that.
The basic concept that people with different opinions must look different works together with the thought that people that look different from me have a different opinion than mine.
There is a word for it...umm, thinking.... got it - Racism! - badken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"Lott was simply making a point that the groups who have been basically at war since the sun first rose over humanity are far more similar than they are different."
This is precisely the problem with the statement (and most of our political leaders' understanding of the region). They are similar *in appearance only*. In the ways that matter in their culture, they are vastly different. That we fail to grasp this simple truth is the reason we should not be trying to run things in the region. - SirCharge, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1"But I expect my elected representatives, who are waging a war in this area, to know a great deal more about it than I do."
So, our elected officials should know everything about history, economics, legislation, law and sociology, probably a little psychology and a whole lot about debate and political theory. In their free time they should try to get reelected and be loving, well rounded family men that we can respect.
No. That's why they hire experts. So that they can tell them what a Sunni looks like and what a Shiite looks like. The expert will still say they look the same, because they do.
The only reason to be upset at Trent Lott for this is if you really just want to be upset at Trent Lott. - SirCharge, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4@KF6BBL
"If I said that "you people all look alike" and was talking about black people here, imagine the crap I would take for that."
That's not what Lott is saying. What he's saying is akin to "Baptist black people look like Presbyterian black people." He's not dividing a group by race, but by sect.
"There is a word for it...umm, thinking.... got it - Racism!"
Its not racism, its pointing out a situation. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If they knew who each other was in those revolutions, they wouldn't have had to declare their allegiance
- rhawk301, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Please, whomever is in this Senators state, just vote him out of office please. Someone else has to do a better job. He has totally lost touch with reality.

Exactly! Seriosly not meaning to insult anyone's religion, but aren't all Christian/Morman/Latter Day Saints/etc. basically the same religion with different names? I mean, look, there really aren't MAJOR changes in their scriptures and yet they compete and send preachers to your door every weekend to try to get you to convert. It's stupid! - zebov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3CherryTzors,
All religions have similarities and all religions have differences. That doesn't at all, however, make all religions the same just with different names. Christianity and Mormonism are vastly different. Even the different denominations under the broad title "Christianity" have huge differences (think Pentecostal versus Catholic versus Methodist versus Southern Baptist). Likewise for the different denominations of Mormonism (Latter-day Saints). If you're still in school, I suggest taking a Intro to Religions course. Very interesting and informative stuff no matter what your religious affiliation (or lack thereof). - pixarman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why did the North fight the South...they all looked the same??
I mean seriously, does this guy have a basic education or was he just raised by the clan? - Wooism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As someone else said, it's along the lines of the same issues the prots and catholics had/have in Irelend.
For Sunni's they come to resent the Shia because the Shia are what you might think of as the "catholic islam". They have beleif's in prophets that they make into saints and they pray to them, etc. as catholics do. The Sunni on the other hand are more like you fundementalist christian. very conservative, and beleiving that god is the only one to be prayed to, except through the name of muhammad (as is with the name of christ for xtians).
But, one still must realize this is all religious fanaticism. If there are 100,000 Sunni and 100,000 Shia in Baghdad, you have to realize that the numbers of those causing violence is only in the 100's at most. It's a small percentage of the whole. Fanatics.
I get so sick and tired of hearing people talk about "THE Muslims" this and that. Every time an abortion clinic gets blown up we don't say "THE Christians" do we? No. And not just because of a boas toward xtianity, but because having lived so close to, or taken part of, xtianity for most or all of our lives in the U.S. we understand how there can be those on the outer edges.
So I give pause and as not, Why do Sunnis kill Shiites - but why can't Americans just understand the situation in the middle east the way they understand things here at home?

Sometimes I have a problem telling white people apart. Does that make me racist?- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8No, 'cause black people and asians look the same to me too, it's not racist, it just is.
- Nevarius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Think it has more to do with exposure. If you only seen one black guy in your entire life you will most likely think they all look the same. On the other hand if you grew up with and socialized with black people (any race really, just using it as a example) you can tell the difference. Probably one of the reasons cities tend to be more for democrats and little town, USA tends to be more for republicans. In the city there's diversity of race and culture, thus the people tend to be more understanding of differences. In little town everyone is usually the same etc which anything different ,be it cultural or color, can bring a clash. Granted this isn't absolute. There's opened mined people in the country and closed mined people in the city.
The question is "should we allow such closed mined, out of touch with the public(and its diversity) people anywhere near leadership roles in our country - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Your so right. I cant tell White people apart if my life depended on it. There are 5 people at my school I keep switching names for!
- cviebrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't you all remember that episode of Law & Order? The one where the case hinged on a person of one race not being able to identify members of another?
I can't recall, but there is a (scientific?) term for this phenomenon: all black/Hispanic/Asian people looking the same to whitey, and vice versa. - zebov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think most of the time it has very little to do with race and very much to do with whether or not you know somebody personally.
If I see a random group of people, no matter race, and then you stop me and show me pictures of people, asking whether or not they were in that group, I'd have no clue. On the other hand, if I'm with a group of friends or acquantances (no matter race) and you do the same, there's no doubt I will be able to identify those in the group.
On this note, if someone already has the thought "I don't like (insert race) people," then they probably won't get to know anyone from that race personally, and thus won't distinguish people from that group.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Quick! Somebody find a Sunni or Shiite that looks remarkably lke Trent Lott. Just about everyone looks remarkably like everyone else to some extent... Sheesh.

The whole "we need to put this in context" idea is to some extent irrelevant because no matter what it is ridiculous that these people are killing each other. This is just like what went on in the Balkans and Rwanda in the mid-90s. There is all this nonsense about a division between two groups of people that isn't very great, and even if it were it still wouldn't justify blowing each other up.

- gnuzi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8the subject "Why Do Sunnis Kill Shiites?" is too wrong...i feel sad... :(
there are three groups in iraq...one are the kurds...they dont like fighting...they just want to get as many advantage as they can from this war...and there are shiites (shi'a)...who are allies with the United States Of A'Holes against what they call terrorists...and there are sunnis which most of them are the resistance (called terrorists because they resist the occupation)...
now the subject asks why sunnis kill shi'as...it should be why shi'as kill sunnis...no not just killing...they torture first...they use drills and such horrible tools which u have never seen not even in the scariest movies...
lastest big thing they have done to sunnis is (BELIEVE THIS...I HAVE THE SOURCE IN ARABIC...LOOK DOWN) is kidnapping some sunni's 3 year old son and torturing him then burning him then cooking in an oven and putting him on a plate with salad...like a kabab...then putting it infront of the family's house...
those shi'as kill sunnis just because they are sunnis...one of their group say that if u spill a sunni's blood on a shi'as grave...all his/her sins will be cleared...
about exploding civilians...my personal thought (and also this is what the resistance say) is that it is done by those who want to make the resistance look bad...
these things might be new to some/most of you...it is just because of ur fcuked up media...i watched the american version of cnn/abc and some others...it is totaly fcuked up...they show things really differently...wait till jazeera international starts and then see the other sides openion (if not the truth)...
FACT:
shi'as religon is closer to christianity than it is to sunni/islam...

i dont know hebrew...but if you search for this in hewbrew language...you will find more sources...have phun reading.... - bigdavediode, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You cite anti-semitic tracts reprinted in Palestine (kind of a hotbed for antisemitism) as support of a myth that is hundreds of years old.
Oh, and the myth is false. And stupid, by the way.
Hell, there's even a whole wikipedia entry on this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_libel
Oh yes, and Jewish people do not have horns. Amazingly, there are some really, really stupid people who believe that, too! - gnuzi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1bigdave...you didnt spend some time search the net...
look at this: http://www.thewatcherfiles.com/jewish_sacrifice.htm
there are many others...
i dont want/need you to believe...i will put it here for the others...you can worship those jews as you like...its ok... - bigdavediode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay gnuzi, you win. After all, you read it on the net.
Hey, you want to hear something funny? My friend, who's a Shia, read that Shiites kill and eat Sunni babies.
Nothing ever changes. Stupid people keep reproducing. Remember to have lots of kids, and teach them to hate just like you learned.
- pawchikapawpaw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1see, that would've been a good insider's look, but it all the more makes it confusing.
- Brian48216, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1That comment made me LOL.
- DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Trent Lott opens mout and says something stupid. This is news?
- pawchikapawpaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dugg because it made me laugh.
also, because it reminded me of other faux pas, like hillary's plantation comment ("You know what I'm talking about...") and that dem congressman with the Indian to 7-11 comment and that repub congressman's comment about the taxi drivers and arabs.- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Both of those Democratic comments were by Hilary Clinton. The plantation one was actually in bad taste but not particularly racist. The other was damn racist.
- ddcrandall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Man. We need some people that actually realize that everything in the world isn't exactly like it is here. "They look alike, why are they killing each other?" He must have failed American history classes in school...or at leas the ones relating to the Civil War...
This man really needs an editor to follow him around and hit him when he starts saying stupid or racist things. - keeton67, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Frankly who cares let them kill each other it keeps them from fighting us they get weaker and need more money for the war effort so they sell the only thing they have of value (oil) flooding the market so the price goes down . Sounds like a win win to me. And to think all we had to do was get rid of Saddam. We should of thought of it sooner.
- gnuzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YES...thats why there will be civil war...
thats why lots of more people will die...
FACT: americans killed more than saddam in last 16 years...dont replay untill you search for this...you might find other insteresting things...
this world is too big...there are lots of kind people who will tell the truth about something most others dont know....
- gnuzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YES...thats why there will be civil war...
- rockets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ok, how many here know the answer to the "why" question ?
- Conglomerate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I still don't understand how they are having a population growth when everyone seems to be dying.
- custerfluck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2so maybe he mis-spoke...what he should have (and may have meant to) say was “They are all people " or "all people that share a common heritage" he wouldn't have caught so much hell from libs waiting for him to make a mistake if he would have thought about what he said before he said it.
- EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was looking at a picture of Lott and a guy with a white hood, you know, side by side. And for the life of me, I couldn't tell these people apart.
- VTmruhlin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Do you mean Robert C Byrd?
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It makes perfect sense to me. It's only OK to kill people that look different than you. /sarcasm
- VTmruhlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do sunni's and shiites actually look different in any measurable way? If you presume to be able to tell somebody's religious beliefs by "the way they look", you're treading on some dangerous ground.
In this situation, yeah it was dumb. The fight's not about who looks different, and the guys running our country really should know what it is about.
But I can't stand it when I get criticism because I can't tell if a person's Mexican or Chilean just by looking at them. I'm sorry for not being prejudicial.
"But he's black on the left half, and white on the right half; and I'm black on the right half, and white on the left half!" - dupswapdrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1the boy just ain't right!
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These politicians all look the same to me.
- SGT.SHIZZO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yawn. Wake me up when it's over.
- thedez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lott represents my state, Mississippi, and from what i can gather, unless he is found with the body of a dead prostitute, he will be related.
- thedez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I meant re-elected instead of related, sorry.
- adamhmitchell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Forget all the racism crap. The important part of the story is that Bush had all his boys in one room and none of them asked him about Iraq. Isn't that odd? For all the money and lives and reputation on the line, you'd think that would be the on the agenda.
Iraq was the elephant in the room on Thursday morning. No matter what they say in public, they all know how badly this "war" is going... But if they pretend it's going well, especially in front of each other, then there is no need to talk about it. What's the point? It's going so great, after all, that they'd all just be wasting time talking about it!
***** unbelievable. - fujiman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can anyone here tell a Sunni and Shiite apart?
Am I racist for asking the question?
Or are you racist for not knowing how to answer?
The point is, that the sect of Islam you belong to has nothing to do with the way you look. To suggest otherwise would put you in the same group as the Hutus of Rawanda, who butchered the Tutsis... or people that "looked like" Tutsis. - libeater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh noes!!! Trett Lott is a racist!!!1!! Seriously, how desperate are you guys? He's right, they're killing each other over a ridiculous doctrinal issue. Let's not let the facts get in the way of a chance to bash a repub.
- wazzadoin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The man is only the most power Senator in Congress. No need for him to knwo
