- PoliticalMan922, on 07/03/2008, -5/+18No one should say someone is not a Patriot. I don't wear a flag lapel pin, but I love my country. It is the love of this nation and the desire to make it better than makes me a Patriot.
- allowners, on 07/04/2008, -2/+4Yes, principles and actions, not vacuous symbolism. Symbolism is usually used to cover for the lack of the former.
- landosystem, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2The craziest fact is that our government is set up to thrive on the questioning of our laws, change makes our country strong. When people say to question authority is to not be a patriot, it strikes me as the most un-American sentiment possible.
- Babblin5, on 07/03/2008, -9/+8If you play pro football in New England, then you're a patriot...
- thirdcoastborn, on 07/03/2008, -6/+2that's pretty funny, even though it's all about the Dallas Cowboys. How bout' them Cowboys.
- IzMan2008, on 07/04/2008, -3/+1That's what I am talking about!

- kazz67, on 07/03/2008, -3/+11Speaking as a Brit, may I say it makes a refreshing change to read something this real on this subject from that side of the Pond.
Dugg!- nowsamsara, on 07/04/2008, -2/+4Hi Kazz! There's a lot of real stuff this side of the pond. You just have to avoid the hype! :-) [Most of us are intelligent people. Um. Well. Few?] Heh!
- ameologger, on 07/03/2008, -5/+2i think it should be called "freedom of law" not freedom of speech .
the ablity to say what some one has in mind isn't something that i should be fighting for ,
if i started fighting for it then i already lost it .
i am a patriot whether i liked or not , it's in the blood not in words - greenfyre, on 07/04/2008, -3/+13Nationalists scream that their country is the best in the world, patriots work tirelessly to make it so.
- rareblue, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2Thank you, of course you did just break down my entire article in one sentence.
- greenfyre, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1Sorry, sell it as the CliffsNotes version. Besides, the people who need to read your article aren't going to; four whole paragraphs? - too long.
Come to think of it, my sentence is probably too long too.
Sigh

What Patriotism Is, and Is Not truthout.org
http://digg.com/politics/What_Patriotism_Is_and_Is ... - DrPaul2008, on 07/04/2008, -2/+3Apparently, that's a matter of opinion. Those of like mind would find the freest country to be the "best". Others think of glory, comfort, military might, illusion of safety, etc. I can understand why the statists feel that the United States is the best. To us patriots who valued the original purpose for the the nation, you seem a lot like misguided nationalists.
The "patriots" mentioned above have worked tirelessly as the United States has dropped out of the top ten freest nations in the world. However, the United States is an undeniable imperial power which pretty much dictates to the entire planet. So, what do you think? Patriotism, or nationalism?- greenfyre, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1"you seem" = statists?
Sorry, but it is not always clear to whom you refer in different parts of your comment. - DrPaul2008, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2Yes. I was referring to those who consider the United States the best country in the world based on criteria other then freedom. Where I can understand how those who endorse the nature of the state today thinking that the United States is the "best", I consider it truly "patriotic" to only judge the United States based on the freedom of the people who live here. Everything else is nationalism. If there wasn't so few truly patriotic working tirelessly, the state would be a fraction of it's current size, and our freedoms would have increased since the original design of the nation, rather then decrease to become the abomination it is today. It's nationalism that has allowed this to happen.
- greenfyre, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1"you seem" = statists?
- bosssmiley, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Brevity: never over-rated.

- Vitiare, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2This is about the 8th or 9th time this person has sent the same shout. I wish I could un-digg this stupid spammer.

- kimsonsolutions, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1the real question is how beeing a patriot makes you a better personn ?
some (most of the ?) patriots are racist ass- greenfyre, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1Depending on how you define 'patriot' which is the point of the article

Soo right on.
RIP George you are dearly missed. Your gift to see thru the smokescreen whirlwind of lies and bull ***** was truly legendary. - barbsat, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2A wise old saying: "Posers wave the flag, Patriots wave the Constitution".
- temsi, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4Both Liberals and Conservatives love their country.
The difference is in how; not in how much.
Liberals love their country like an adult loves another - they acknowledge their flaws and try to help fix them.
Conservatives love their country like a child loves its mother - she can do no wrong and criticism is met with anger.
Patriotism does not mean "my country, right or wrong".
Patriotism means "my country, when it's right, and when it's wrong, we fix it."
That's my opinion anyway. - sherrife, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2***** the nation-state. What does it do beyond subsidise corporations, invade places that might of some economic or geo-strategic benefit to the same monopolies, and forbid those who are fleeing those invasions to take haven in our relatively safer part of the world?
Down with the capitalist state!- vault, on 07/06/2008, -2/+1Communism has been an epic fail everywhere in the world it has been tried. The Marxists say that didn't count as real communism but ignore the fact that their idealized version of it is just a fantasy not rooted in reality and that it can't ever happen.
China was a dirt poor ***** until they began economic reforms. Now Chinese corporations are traded on American exchanges, and there is a growing middle class where people actually have some hope for the future. Under communism you are trapped...no matter how hard you work, how smart you are, or how talented you are, you are never rewarded for it because everyone gets the same ***** deal regardless.
Capitalism's far from perfect, but it's miles better than communism.

- Starshope, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2Drumming up patriotism for personal gains is a pretty good political tool age throughout the ages. It isn't anything new. But the question is, what to do about it?
