If localism applies to radio, it must apply to newspapers and television broadcasts as well.
Our "hometown" newspaper is actually owned by a consortium, along with the next city over's newspaper. Most of the "news" is no longer local. If you peruse their web sites, it isn't much local either. That would have to change, right?
And, of course, CBS, NBC, and ABC would have to go the way of Ma Bell and be broken into all independent broadcasters because you can't have too many shows that don't reflect their communities.
Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander! - Lucky9teen, on 11/17/2008, -10/+38 This report complained that there was too much conservative talk on the radio because of "the absence of localism in American radio markets" and urged the FCC to "[e]nsure greater local accountability over radio licensing.
--------------------------------------
No...conservative talk radio is more popular because no one wants to hear the hate and vitriol from the left so the liberal talk radio just gets turned off. Have you ever tried listening to ERROR AMERICA? Ugh...it drives one insane. No one ever has an original thought of their own to divulge...it's just non stop moonbat, idiocy and liberal talking points.- Autodidaddict, on 11/18/2008, -7/+8Wait....wait.....wait.....you're saying liberal talk radio (if you can call such a thing....makes up like 2% of all talk radio) is full of hate and vitriol?
Are you being serious?
You can disagree with a lot of liberal ideology. You can disagree with Barack Obama. You can disagree with senate democrats. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
But by labeling "liberals" as preaching "hate", "divisiveness", and "vitriol" (would probably use a different word here) - you are seriously undermining your own credibility.
Look, I have no problem with people watching or liking Fox News Channel. But to actually believe it's "fair and balanced" you have to be way off base and out of touch. Of course it's biased. So is the Huffington Post. But at least most HuffPo readers will admit it's biased. You guys watch Bill O'Reilly, listen to Rush Limbaugh, and read Ann Coulter and love to blame all the problems on "liberals".
Everyone believes in free speech only when it doesn't offend them. Or only when they agree with the message.
And on another note, I talk to a lot of conservatives who are saying Obama is assaulting the constitution. So it's ok to destroy the constitution and roll back civil liberties if it's to fight "terror" by way of the Patriot Act? People interpret the constitution in different ways - Obama has a much different interpretation than Ron Paul or George Bush. You can't play both sides of the card....- TigersEye, on 11/18/2008, -2/+7When you put sarcasm in writing you really ought to mention that it is somewhere. Longer they are around will lead to more deterioration of the GOP as a fringe group bent on Hannity digging up Reagan's bones in order to perform a sayonce.

People like you don't understand. Talk Radio is popular because it is fair. Moonbats like you call everyday, and get shot down because you don't know what you're talking about. Talk Radio is dangerous to the socialists on Capitol Hill precisely because most of the audiance is either going to or coming home from WORK while they're listening.
Air America died because it sucked. Air America couldn't survive as a commercial enterprize because it's core audience doesn't go to work everyday. No ratings, no Air America. You socialists already had Air America, it's called NPR. The only reason why NPR is on the air is OUR tax dollars pay for it.

The communists like Alinsky taught his followers to say one thing, get elected, and then do another thing. Obama claims change but continues to appoint "old-line" Democrats to positions in his new administration. Change we can count on will be change that hits you right behind the head with a reduction in our liberty and rights. Watch out, the Democrats have always believed the only way to win is by leveling the playing field. The Fairness Doctrine, FCC Localism (whatever you want to call it) is a very viable tool that the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress will try and use as a weapon against Conservatives and our rights to free speach.

There's the NSA warrantless eavesdropping program wherein the president breezily authorized spying on the phone calls of innocent citizens, in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The FBI's TALON database shows the government has been spying on nonterrorist groups, including Quakers, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and Veterans for Peace. The Patriot Act lives on. Gitmo? It is really scary that so many Americans feel the way you do. It is foolish and ignorant. You are so brainwashed by conservative talk radio and other corporate-owned "main stream media" outlets like Murdoch's owned Wall Street Journal and Fox News.
[Think Fox News is fair and balanced?....listen to owner Rupert Murdoch admit that Fox is broadcast with a political agenda: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K2pLo8JV5Y]
You silly republicans call yourselves "patriots" and imply that some parts of America (the red states) are more "American" than others (like Palin did on the campaign trail). You waste time calling Obama a socialist, a communist, a terrorist, or un-American. Just because he went to school for a few years in another country (A Muslim country no less...but it was in Asia even, not even the Middle East...and besides, lots of college kids do it..it's called studying abroad...but I'm sure you never went to college), or show clips with him not wearing a flag lapel pin (wow...what a crime)...or you spread lies about how Michelle Obama said she wasn't "proud of her country" and some ***** like that.
Yet you love Sarah Palin who's husband belongs to an Alaskan secessionist group...that's the most un-American you can get. Maybe you people living in the South still don't understand that....must take more than 150 years to get through....
Bush and his administration over the past 8 years have stomped all over American civil liberties more than any other administration since the 1920's. Only a fool doesn't understand and value the civil liberties that are granted to us in this country...that's what this country was founded on. The Founding Fathers realized this...here's a quotation from Benjamin Franklin:
"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
I personally agree...I don't like the idea that the government or anyone else can wiretap my phone and Internet communication without suspicion, cause, or a warrant. Even though I have nothing to hide.
I don't like the idea that the government and military can detain American Citizens (or even non-citizens) for years and years in secret prisons without due process or even bringing charges to them (this by the way is a guaranteed right in the constitution...maybe you should read it before you start telling others about it). You can't just sweep people into secret prisons because you're calling them a terrorist and then not give them a trial or anything. This is what governments used to do in the middle ages...should we just roll back democracy all together? Yet you bleeding red republicans claim your the party of freedoms and liberty. You are completely backwards and wrong.
But I doubt the only people that bothered to read this whole comment already know all of this. Your attention span is too short...go back to watching Fox News with the flashy graphics, blond bimbo anchors, and angry talking heads blaming all the country and world problems on "liberals" and "democrats"...keep up the good work guys.

- chickenbig, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1It works to undig your digg. Just click the thumbs down...
- rekrapt, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6Keep telling yourself that, eco... keep telling yourself that we're all just stupid, hateful people. Nice little bubble you're living in.
- thesfdude, on 11/18/2008, -13/+1Good grief you folks are scary!
- InRussetShadows, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5Typical liberal -- argumentation by adjective.
- stockgotti, on 11/18/2008, -1/+12The New World Order is just going to push the American people and push them and push them until they will only have one final measure to resort to. Why won't these monsters just back off for a second? It will be their downfall.
- werkerb33, on 11/18/2008, -3/+3That "one final measure" being to vote, right?
Or dare I suggest, get off their collective asses and run for office? Even at the local level...where things matter.- stockgotti, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3Sure. What you said.
- werkerb33, on 11/18/2008, -3/+3That "one final measure" being to vote, right?
- werkerb33, on 11/18/2008, -1/+11It does not matter who is in charge; the all deserve the hardest of scrutiny. Trust no one, especially those with power over you.
Rights are not given by the state; they are inherent in our liberty regardless of the leaders we elect. If the left shuts down the right today; tomorrow someone will come for you. - akhomestead, on 11/18/2008, -5/+5It amazes me how people can only see one side of the isle. Neocons are convinced that Obama will destroy the constitution, which I agree with, but they don't see what bush has done in the last 8 years to the constitution. The patriot act took 80% of our freedoms away but because we're fighting cave men it's ok. I guess divide and conquer really works, people will only see what they want to see because the biggest enemy of knowledge isn't ignorance, it's the illusion of knowledge.
- rekrapt, on 11/18/2008, -2/+7And what freedoms, exactly, did you loose?
- tasine, on 11/18/2008, -3/+4I'm with rekrapt. Exactly what freedoms did you lose? I notice you did not lose your freedom to live as we haven't had a terrorist attack on our soil again. I notice you haven't lost your freedom of speech as you got this paragraph on world-wide circulation. You haven't lost the freedom to assemble. You haven't lost your freedom of religion (yet). I haven't lost any of my freedoms though I am really worried that our constitution is in jeopardy.
- InRussetShadows, on 11/18/2008, -2/+5I'll third that. What freedoms have you lost?
- akhomestead, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Since you can't do research here it is for you:
Because of the Patriot Act at anytime for any reason the government can call you an enemy combatant (which has happened countless times to innocent US citizens), and when that happens:
They take your 1st because if they arrest you,and you can't tell anyone.
They take your 4th because they don't need warrants to enter your house or spy on your phone calls
They take your 5th (which you've never really had for about 90 years) because they can force you to testify on yourself.
They take the 6th when they can call evidence against you top secret and you can't see or defend it.
They take your 8th when they can hold you up to three years without you having any contact with a lawyer, family or anyone for that matter.
Now maybe you trust this government enough but they made the bill of rights for a reason. What happens when a politician or even a cop uses these powers to protect themselves? Or somebody horrible gets elected? Clinton tried to pass something like this in the 90's, and the GOP said hell no.
Furthermore, all those things were not needed to stop 911. They could have done it if they had paid attention. And every reason you gave is pure propaganda. I bet you heard "if your not alive your not free" on Fox or some neocon radio show. They said it about a 1000 times because Goebbels proved that if say it often enough the people will believe it..
As for the 5th you've never had, take it instead of incriminating yourself by signing your tax returns. See how that law works for you.- tasine, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1Somehow I just cannot see myself being called an enemy combatant.
You say, "Because of the Patriot Act at anytime for any reason the government can call you an enemy combatant (which has happened countless times to innocent US citizens)". I won't argue that as I do not know how many constitutes "countless" in actual numbers, but I think I am on safe ground when I say that argument is horsefeathers dressed up to look legitimate. When a citizen shows no signs of suspicion, police normally do not arrest them and hold them as you have described. When there are no suspicious signs, police normally pay no attention to a person. Now, if a citizen is stupid enough to emulate what a terrorist might do, I thank God that he is caught and stopped - it means our people are on the ball. Yes, there can be cases where an innocent person is accused - it happens a lot, always has, even prior to the Patriot Act. I love my freedoms and I appreciate them, but to say I have lost any because we are determined to stop terrorists and determined to view them as terrorists, is just stretching the believability of outrage beyond my sense of norm. How many freedoms are the poor victims of 9/11 enjoying today? How many will you enjoy if terrorists are allowed to cheerfully annhilate your city, your home, and yourself. Words are great. Life is too. - akhomestead, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2There is such a loose definition of a terrorist that it can include almost anyone. Plus we don't know what these people we elect are really thinking, the person we see is *****. What if some evil bastard gets elected? The Patriot act is very similar to what Hitler passed after the Reichstag got burnt down.. And people like you were happy they had such a strong leader to protect them. And again THEY DIDN'T NEED THESE TO STOP 911. Maybe they should protect our borders since a 90 year old blind grandma with a broken hip can get across almost anytime.
And here's a video about it. But I warn you it scared the ***** out of me to the point I couldn't watch all of it. You don't hear about this with our corrupt corporate media, they are more like state run news than anything, they don't tell us squat about what's really going on,.. The biggest special interest in DC is the media, don't expect them to help, they are getting favors not to.

Another video about what's happend to our freedom called "End of America"

"Somehow I just cannot see myself being called an enemy combatant."
First they came for the Muslims, and since i"m not a Muslim I didn't really care. Then they came for the Mexicans. And since I"m not Mexican I didn't care. Then they came for the Jews, and since I"m not Jewish I didn't care. Then they came for Americans... and nobody was left to care about me.
You are not free unless I am free. You protect your freedoms by protecting my freedoms.
- tasine, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1Somehow I just cannot see myself being called an enemy combatant.
- akhomestead, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Oh, and I'll take my chances with freedom. It's worth it. It's a kick in the face to every soldier who's died to protect it for us to give it away so easily...
- tasine, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1I'll take freedom any day too. Thank God I have a life fairly filled with freedom- oops, except at tax time! Other than that, I have lost no freedoms.
- werkerb33, on 11/18/2008, -0/+12Air America failed in the most liberal markets in the US, including San Fransisco, New York and Los Angeles.
It's not that someone is keeping them down, it's just that there is no interest in their programming even among people who like the message. But the Internet...now there is real liberal leanings there.
Anecdotally it seems clear to me: liberals head to the 'net while conservative flock to the airwaves. At the end of the day I'd rather have my message on the internet -- it replicates faster and gets expanded ad nauseum. And when was the last time you were able to donate money over the radio in a few clicks?
This last election demonstrated that liberals did a better job of getting out the message. They should quit while they're ahead. - lccat, on 11/18/2008, -1/+11Maybe this is how the Europeans felt during WW II after their countries were overthrown and occupied by the Nazi's and reigned over by a dictator who believed he had the right of absolute authority over the individual's existence. Does it matter if they are called socialists, communists, Marxist, or Fascists if they dominate every part of a person's life and the United States loses sovereignty to HIS One World Order?
- BlackGriff, on 11/18/2008, -5/+1You read to many Captain America comics, Red Skull. I know you are typing this idiocy in your drawers with a half naked manikin in your bed, but you really need to read more then the every fabulous Nuts of WND, anything that ends in wordpress.com and begins with islamo or social and stop listening to so much talk radio, its rotting your brain! I bet you have every product the sponsors market. 3 hours a night over a glass of wine is all Hannity asks, (while he envisions you in a skirt)
- CaptCarrot, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Don't be hatin', playa. Overcome the babymama drama in your life and then you'll have time to begin studying politics. You'll become a more informed debater, and a more successful person overall.

- BlackGriff, on 11/18/2008, -5/+0WTF! I guess you have seen every episode of The Wayans Brothers and would like to converse in my lingo. Listen you dumbazz things like the fairness doctrine and idiots that say weird ***** like the above nimrod do not deserve my expert debate skill. In fact you only came to try your hand against me, you fruit. But unless you have more things to say, continue digging then cover yourself with dirt!
- GourmetDan, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4All I see is someone who self-identifies as being black and nothing else.
It may be very important to you, but nobody else cares how much melanin you have in your skin.
Grow up. You post like you are about 14 years old.- BlackGriff, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1I don't remember typing anything to you teacher of the month! I know your great wisdom that you have bestowed upon me will last a life time. But I am sorry none of your watered down guilt trips will not work tonight. In fact I think you know how a 14 year old posts because that's how you lure them into getting an address then showing up at there house with your pants down! So please mind your business :) digg somewhere else that pedophiles such as yourself will be accepted.

- reaper527, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4this isn't good. conservative radio will never die, as if obama follows through with his plan, it will move to xm radio. this may not kill conservative, radio, but it would be a HUGE hit, as it would limit the number of republicans listen, and essentially eliminate the group of independents with access to the broadcasts.
- TheOtherOne135, on 11/18/2008, -4/+1So, the FCC puts up a proposal a year ago, under Bush, and somehow that means Obama's declaring war?
I mean, if you want to argue he's about to engage in war, or he's engaging in a stealth war by means of the people he's picking for his transition team, fine. But that whole article is speculation about what he might do, and what his team wants to do - where's the support for the title? Actual declarations? - lostlyrics, on 12/08/2008, -0/+1bah humbug - only the dumbest sycophants use
'war on' for everything. and they are rather trained
by viagrush, o'lielly, nazi-ann and similar rabid farts.
