- austang, on 07/17/2008, -23/+159That's the future of the United States at the rate we are going. China has already bought up a ton of our stock exchange along with land in the mid west states.
And if Japan hadn't beat them to it, Hawaii would be speaking Chinese by now.- DaviDaviDaviD, on 07/17/2008, -2/+47Actually the Chinese Stock Market fell 50% this year alone. Their market was not as strong as many thought it was, however I agree that China is up an coming,
- nickvdk, on 07/17/2008, -1/+16As a person who has traveled to China over 25 times in the past 5 years, I have seen first hand a accelerated growth of the Chinese economy.
There is no doubt that China has one of the fastest growth rates in the world, but the government loves to BS their statistics a lot. E.g. if growth is 8% pa, many independent economists places it at 6%.
Same with stock markets. Many Chinese accountants love to fudge their books to look good to investors. I have no doubt there will be many accounting scandals in the scale of Enron that have yet to be uncovered in the Chinese stock market.
Guys, don't believe all the doom and gloom stories saying we will be at war with China in the future. China truely wants to integrate into the world economy. All their posturing in world politics is just for their own self esteem. - arkboysooner, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2It seems like with how fast they are moving right now and the population they have to continue to sustain that the bottom would drop out from China sooner or later, but what do I know?
- stagmire, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0What does that have to do with the Chinese buying up OUR stocks?

- ssn697, on 07/17/2008, -4/+64And, using your example, obviously Hawaii is now ruled by the Japanese...
- shutaro, on 07/17/2008, -0/+34They rule over it with an Iron Fist.
Seriously, though, this reminds me of back in the 1980s when all the science fiction of the day had the Japanese owning everything in the future... And what happened? - Anpheus, on 07/17/2008, -1/+13There was a recession in the Japanese market?
- Slade605, on 07/17/2008, -2/+17Nintendo became a major business?
- mk3k, on 07/17/2008, -0/+15Shutaro - exactly, mid to late 80's were all the same talk of Japan buying all of our land and basically destroying us from within. Didn't happen. Every time I hear this China stuff I think the same thing.
- LeeSoong, on 07/17/2008, -8/+2The Japanese don't breed and the Chinese kill their own children in the 'one-child-per-family' policy.
Meanwhile, red-necks get drunk and screw while NASCAR is on TV and pop out 10 kids.

- ayeroxor, on 07/18/2008, -2/+5"Didn't happen. Every time I hear this China stuff I think the same thing."
this one time, I thought somebody was behind me, following me with the intent of killing me. I turned around, and whoever it was, they must have gotten distracted by something else. So by your logic, I had no reason to worry then, and I especially never will again.

- valleyman86, on 07/18/2008, -1/+0That can't be true. All my girlfriends have been Asian. Besides, Im not a player and I treat girls with tons of respect and this tends to help my situation.
- 32bytes, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5I thought it was fed saving bonds what china had a hell of a lot of.
Given the current situation china could wreck the dollar (even more) at any time.- mk3k, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6the have a ***** load of dollars, but they don't want our economy in the toilet. We buy their crap.
- darkciti2, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2If the US Dollar collapsed, it would bring the Chinese economy with it. We're the #1 importer of their goods and they are the #1 importer of a lot of our industry (US cotton, for example).
We sell them the cotton, they print the t-shirts and send them back. Sounds fair to me.
I'd rather buy a US grown and made hemp t-shirt though, but the trade lines aren't completely unbalanced. - Hangly, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1T-bills, a.k.a. two-year treasury bonds.
Yes, they have a ton of them.
And we are not the #1 importer of their goods. We only buy 10% of what they make. Bigger percentages of their output go to Europe and Japan.
Their success is not dependent on our success. They're already starting to unload their dollars (and who wouldn't?)
See here:
http://digg.com/business_finance/Sovereign_funds_c ... - ssn697, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1"And we are not the #1 importer of their goods. We only buy 10% of what they make"
A little more than that (13%), according to 2006 numbers, and that DOES make us their biggest client, by country.
"Bigger percentages of their output go to Europe and Japan"
Exact numbers in Billions:
# United States = $162.9
# Hong Kong = $124.5
# Japan = $84
# South Korea = $35.1
# Germany = $32.5
# Netherlands = $25.9
# United Kingdom = $19
# Singapore = $16.6
# Taiwan = $16.6
# Russia = $13.2
Let me guess: You are a Ron Paul supporter, aren't you?
- TracerBulletNPI, on 07/17/2008, -9/+14And is this a bad thing (making that pin over there...)? Do we really need to employ someone here in the states to make a trinket that's so trivial? Leave your politics aside and it's just a matter of economics. Why produce something as trivial as a little pin (disregard the flag part) in this country when they can be produced for less wages in a country that needs those jobs even at the reduced wages. Indeed those reduced wages can go a long way in their market. A person can live off those wages over there, while the person making that pin in the states would just subsist. And it's not a zero sum game. It benefits those Chinese that make it, and it benefits Americans who are pressured to get a better education, and a better more productive (thus higher paying) job... Both win.
- hydroplane, on 07/17/2008, -12/+4Studying hard for your 3rd rate business school exams?
- TracerBulletNPI, on 07/17/2008, -3/+3Nope. Just common sense...
- saxmaster, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3Why do some people think that boycotting goods made with "cheap" labor is supposed to help the workers with those jobs? I thought boycotts were supposed to run businesses into the ground, not magically create higher wages. If people got together and boycotted chinese-run grocery stores, I think it would be seen as racism rather than altruism.
- TracerBulletNPI, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2I agree, Sax...
The Chinese leave the the rice patties to make more money in the cities making those goods US boycotts. If it wasn't more profitable, the Chinese wouldn't do it. The conditions may suck at the job, but that's how their system is right now, and boycotting just retards commercial progress and makes people poorer over there. And why do we really want to keep low wage jobs in the US when US citizens have the potential to do so much more. Outsourcing that stuff encourages our citizens to move up. I don't know about racism because those who boycott just don't understand... - rearlgrant, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2hydro -- Actually 3rd rate business school exams is too harsh. It is what they teach at HBS, etc...
Tracer -- I do like what you say, and if it were true that you were taking an exam, I'd say you will pass. That's not derogatory, it is a compliment.
The issue, I think, is like this -- every day I read several specifications for software written by brilliant computer scientists; in general, on first pass, the software has almost no thought about its usability by non-computer scientists. And inevitably, I end up in long rounds of meetings with developers who really want the cool software developed but cannot understand why several "soft science/arts" majors fight about the user interface. Think Reddit.
So your point is valid in terms of studying economics, but it's removed from the context of U.S. Economics.
Buying cheaper U.S. flag lapel pins from communist China at a time when the Republican party has made it one of their top issues to beat up Democrats with, is, I'd say, a loss for the U.S and a win for China. - TracerBulletNPI, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I'm in for the benefit of the country as a whole, so I don't think partisan politics really plays a roll in this discussion. That's a political issue. Not related in any way to 'U.S. Economics'... In my opinion anyway. But thanks for the encouragement!
- BAFrayd, on 07/18/2008, -1/+4Tracer, do yourself a favor and don't make economics a career. You're mixing economics with social moralism in your "reasoning". You should realize that we ( the US) are competing with China and other foreign countries for our economic lives. The economic side of outsourcing very much is a zero sum game. We, as a country, are losing. Do the math.
Also, be honest. Do you really care about the Chinese? If so, why? I doubt the average Chinese person cares at all for your welfare, or even gives you a single thought. They have managed to survive as a people, and country, far longer than the USA has even existed. Your concern for them is misguided at best and false posturing at worst. - Hangly, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Tracer, your concept of American and Chinese manufacturing is a little outdated. China does not only make cheap crap. They make the iPhone for gods sake. Actually they make virtually all the electronic and computer components you use. Also steel, weapons, cars, you name it.
The US doesn't make much of anything at all any more. How many Americans do you know who have a factory job?
We produce weapons, oil, software and that's about it. Everyone else has some kind of a service job. - Dalhectar, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2And that service economy is able to support virtually the entire middle class. We're so well off, we can live in a post industrial world where no body make anything and yet there's everything available. Now if we didn't do stupid stuff like waste money on wars we don't need to fight we'd probably be a bit better off.
That said there still is a industrial base here. I live less than 30 minutes from a semiconductor plant that makes RAM. Coal is mined 2 hours in the other direction. Other parts of the country make cars and car parts, and hell, there's highly skilled industry in every part of the country.
More natural resources are harvested every day, and human capitol grows on a daily basis. That's why there's global trade is not a zero sum game. The amount of wealth in our country, and the world, grows litterally every second. The Pie always gets bigger. Perhaps social justice can distribute that pie better, but that's a result of political choices. Why not look to CEOs that hide money oversees to avoid taxes instead of some Chinese dude making lappel pins for less than $2 bucks a day. Stop watching Lou Dobbs and read a book, preferably written by someone with a Ph.D. that has studying this issue more than your favorite TV hothead.
Or rather, how much would you pay someone to make flag lappel pins. Probably less than a dollar a hour, so why not let the Chinese do it?
Do you people debate evolution or gravity with the same vigor you debate basic economic theory? Evolution is taught in High School, does that discount it?
- insanebrain, on 07/17/2008, -7/+14Everybody knows that these days America is for sale.
- baconz, on 07/17/2008, -0/+11It always has been. But it wasn't always this cheap.
- hmunkey, on 07/17/2008, -6/+7China owns so much of our government's bonds, that if we try anything to stop trade, we're ***** as they'll pull their money out.

- Hangly, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Oops, too late.
- ohokyeah, on 07/17/2008, -8/+7That these flag pins are made in China is all the more reason why the whole political uproar about Obama (mostly on Fox tabloid news network) not wearing flag pins is even more ludicrous. (Which was my main thought initially, that they're not even made in the US). By wearing flag pins we're supporting China a lot more than the US.
I guess that makes Obama more patriotic than other politicians because he's not wearing Chinese made goods to try to put on a facade of patriotism. Really though, how is a $1 piece of lead laced metal with cheap lacquer more patriotic anyhow? Flags belong on flagpoles, not on suit lapels. - haydesigner, on 07/17/2008, -3/+5"And if Japan hadn't beat them to it, Hawaii would be speaking Chinese by now."
Since Hawaii is obviously only speaking Japanese now.
:::rolls eyes:::
I bet if you were born twenty years earlier, you'd be spouting off semi-hidden racist platitudes about the Japanese. And now that you would know today that your racist fears about the Japanese were completely wrong, would you feel like an ignorant chump? I'm guessing not.- austang, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3Go to hawaii sometime and tell me what the majority of the population is there. And I'm not talking about the few ghetto neighborhoods.
- Gamer2k4, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1So what if that's the future of the United States? What would you rather have, low cost products from China or high cost products from the US?
- diggduggjoe, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4All we need to do is drop the high corporate tax rates which make our products uncompetitive both here and abroad. Corporations DO NOT pay taxes, they pass them on. We are effectively taxing ourselves and the other nations of the world. No wonder Chinese stuff is so cheap. American labor is more expensive, but with the right tooling it can be competitive. We must just do everything we can to keep our prices down.
- rearlgrant, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Gamer -- given we're buying cheap goods on credit, I'd rather have higher cost products bought not on credit than cheap products bought on credit. In the long run, whether it's me paying my credit card interest rate or my grandchildren paying back interest to China, those "high cost products from the US" would be less expensive.
- hivoltage815, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Don't forget the tons and tons of scrap metal they are buying from us, just like Japan did prior to using it against us in WWII. History repeating itself?

- floridiot2, on 07/17/2008, -18/+70Are you really though? Are you proud of your government? Are you proud of the liberties that are disappearing in the name of safety, in the name of terrorism? Are you proud to be associated with millions of other Americans that are so ignorant to believe that a presidential candidate isn't even American? This is a downright shame; digg me down but this is not the America I loved.
- Quisquis, on 07/17/2008, -11/+6Just because someone isn't proud of what is happening in this country doesn't mean that they can't be proud to be a part of the country...

- Vincent21212, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Whoa, whoa, whoa, quisquis. You're throwing around that term 'pride' way too liberally. Your devaluing its meaning. I thought pride used to stand for something strong.

- slowmo, on 07/17/2008, -31/+21Proud to be an American? It wasn't your decision to be born in the U.S. It's not like it's an accomplishment. Unless you're naturalized you haven't achieved *****. You're like one of those 350 lb. fat chicks on Maury Povich that's proud of being a fat ass. Proud of sitting on her ass all day eating Twinkies.
Keep up the good work, fat chick.- Quisquis, on 07/17/2008, -6/+3Are you proud of the sports team at your high school? are you proud of your family? are you proud of your last name? are your proud of your ancestry?
Don't ***** tell me that you can't be proud of something you didn't choose. It's a straw man argument, and everyone knows it except the idiots peddling it. - Vincent21212, on 07/17/2008, -4/+4This confirms it. You're a simpleton Quis, and you don't know the true meaning of pride or haven't experienced it at a higher level then just being proud of where your grandfather was born. Give me a break.
The sense of pride you're feeling, isn't pride. It's a sense of belonging to a group. You feel safe this way.
*****.

- homah, on 07/17/2008, -12/+17I can't imagine being proud of something over which I have no control...race, religion, country, sex, etc.
- Merendino, on 07/17/2008, -9/+4First off, you can completely control which sex you are.... and secondly, I'm pretty sure you can do that with religion too.
- alaric41586, on 07/17/2008, -3/+9You can't completely control your sex...I'm still looking for a working pair of ovaries.
- BabaRamDass, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4So if you have a son, you're not going to be proud of him? You don't get to pick the son you'll get.
I'm not siding with the "I'm proud to be American." sentimentality; I'm merely illustrating that pride is not a logical choice. - homah, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3No, I won't automatically be proud of my child. That doesn't make any sense to me.
- homah, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Merendino:

In someone else, or for yourself?
- dcollantes, on 07/17/2008, -4/+11How can you be proud of something you had no control of? I am naturalized, and very, very worried about our current state of affairs.
- BabaRamDass, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Do you get to choose your son or daughter? No. But that doesn't mean you won't be proud of them when they're born.
- Vincent21212, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1@Baba
WRONG. How many ***** are in this country? Too many. Do not confuse pride with unconditional love. What exactly will you be proud of of your son? That he still suckles on his moms tit at the age of three and still isnt potty trained? You may be proud of YOURSELF, because you never thought you'd insert your penis inside a vagina to conceive a baby, but until that turd learns or accomplishes something of any value, I don't see where pride will come from. - badjoke, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2@BabaRamDass
You're mixing love up with pride. Pride comes from an acceptance of actions. You won't be proud of your son when he's just born, what did he do? You can love him no matter what, but what if he becomes a junkie and a hobo, will you be unconditionally proud of him?
- fani, on 07/17/2008, -9/+6Why are you being buried ? You didn't choose to give it to China. You chose with your one vote.
But we can still be proud of being American. I dugg you up.
I too am proud of America. Maybe not of the current establishment, but still proud of the country. Its not like we're some ***** country. You realize that BOTH parties are gaming people like you into being blind raging flagsuckers right? I love what I was told my country was in grade school and high school. That was a lie about civil liberties and personal rights that have been stripped away for the sake of false security. I actually feel considerably less secure now than I did on Sept. 12, 2001. Being a malcontent and spewing venom isnt going to fix this country, loving it enough save it from what it has become is still worth the love. For better or worse, I still love my country and I know for a FACT that there have been other "troubling" times in our history (.i.e. Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, Internment Camps in WWII) and we over came it. Do you think that changed because one "hated" or "loved' their country? - haydesigner, on 07/17/2008, -4/+1@kilofox: "9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11!!!!! That makes me right!!

I guess that doesn't matter though because that was an American terrorist and we can't take invade any countries. I think you can probably take a very good point away from that. Crazy people don't need a country to back their cause, just themselves or a very dedicated group of people. BTW, I never said anything bad about going into Afghanistan. I think that was justifiable.

What we got was pissing off a lot of countries, killing our own citizens, killing some hundreds of thousands of other citizens, squandering trillions of our tax dollars, etc.- ZeRux, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5I'm far from being a liberal on most matters, but I believe that people should feel proud when they do something noteworthy in life, not because of something they're born with and have no control of.
- jack104, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0Last time I checked, a nation was was best defined as a large group of people in a geographic location, not a handful of guys who make decisions as they see fit. I'm proud of this nation every time I see a flag blowing in the breeze, every time someone smiles and says good morning when I pass them on the sidewalk, and so many other times make me proud to be an american. This nation is the first nation to be TRULY created by the people and for the people, TRULY free. You can argue that all you want, bottom line is it's true. Our nation is going through a rough time but we've been through rougher, any 'nam vet can vouch for that one. God bless the USA.
- BrainInAJar, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1"This nation is the first nation to be TRULY created by the people and for the people, TRULY free."
Unless you're black...
Ultimately, the US was created and remains to be, by an oligarchy ( rich land owners ) for the oligarchy. That the rising tide lifted some of the other boats by chance is irrelevant. - wrs123, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4People bitch and moan about the current administration like its the only thing that defines our nation. While it's one of the most tangible/gaugeable facets, it's definitely nor everything. You know why I am proud to be an American? Because we have the best Constitution in the world (in my eyes). Because we have a beautiful and diverse landscape, and rich culture (i'm talking the birthplace of jazz and hollywood, not mtv). Because millions of other people before me loved it so much that they died for it. That seems kind of ungrateful to those who fought for this nation to just bitch about how there's nothing to be proud of it for. In the grand scheme of things, 8 ***** years is nothing. People are too quick to lose faith.
- aftern9ne, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6Good God it's sad that a man can't say he's proud of his country anymore. You can digg me down mother ***** but I have no love for the current policies of this country. Pride is a crucial part of changing the government so that we can actually make this country what it was supposed to be and force it to adhere to the ideals and principles which we herald with patriotism.
- floppytaco, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8Come on guys, sure the last eight years have been rough, but to just throw your hands up and say you hate your country goes against everything this country was founded on. In my opinion, if the Americans of 100 years ago had the same attitude as some of the folks posting in this board have, the somewhat free country we enjoy today would not exsist.
Don't get me wrong, I am disgusted with the America's current state of domestic and international affairs. However, I am confident in my country's resiliency and I am hopeful that the next administration will set things right again. If the next administration is as much of a cluster ***** as Bush/Cheney though, I say we revolt.
Obama 08! - sideffects, on 07/17/2008, -2/+6That is so sad that someone says they are proud to be an American gets buried. Everyone who says that they would rather live in Canada needs to grow a pair and actually do it. That would solve a lot of America's problems.

- djgargamel, on 07/18/2008, -2/+2"God bless America"? That doesn't even mean anything. If God exists, why the hell are you telling him which nation to bless. What an arrogant ***** you are.
- jack104, on 07/18/2008, -1/+0Jeez, buddy I didn't invent the phrase. I assume it simply means that God would bless America because of the Christian principles it was founded upon and the freedom that we stand for. I'm an arrogant *****?? No your a disgruntled pissy little ingrate.

This is a downright shame; digg me down but this is not the America I loved.

Very symbolic. They'll probably start to print American money over there and mint the coins in China. You know, since they're as useless as all those other little chinese gadgets and junk sold at Wal Mart.- Hetman, on 07/17/2008, -1/+20You have a huge misconception about what China produces. Yea they do produce a lot of cheap items that make there way to Wal Mart. But they also produce very many items that go into all products. Even if a company says this product was made somewhere besides China. They probably used some Chinese parts in it.
- shutaro, on 07/17/2008, -16/+11...and those Chinese parts are probably toxic...
- algaeturd, on 07/17/2008, -11/+4How is that a misconception. By and large the majority of ***** that comes out there is cheaply made garbage. That's why they are making our ***** and we're not....because they make it for 75% less than we can make it and they have no working condition standards.
Let's be honest. I know exactly what they make and the majority of it is garbage, just like this cheaply made enamel pin that will probably last a few wears before the stem breaks off and the paint chips. - Hetman, on 07/17/2008, -1/+8All cell phones including Iphone's are made in china. They may be assembled in America but they originial circuite boards are made in China. The same can be said for every pc, car, electronic etc. Even if it is assembled in America do not believe that the parts come from America. We have very few places to turn cotton into cloth. 95% of our cotton is sent to China to be refined, regardless of who uses the cloth in the end. Be it a Gucci product, or a wall Mart product. Everything you use probably has something to do with China.
- jspegele, on 07/17/2008, -3/+16You think the package surrounding the pin is symbolic of China capturing US? Silly me, I thought it was so the pin didn't fall out. - badjoke, on 07/17/2008, -2/+6So China is holding the country from completely spilling and smashing against the floor? It's pretty much the same analogy.

The Metals came from Western Australia.
The Coal to melt the metals came from Queensland (Eastern Australia).
The machine that made the pin, the metal frame came from Germany initially but was copied many times to keep up production. The plastic inserts were injection molded on another copy of a German injection machine. IN CHina only 2 German machines exist, the others are copies. This also applies to GE reactors, only 1 was ever sold. The plastic contains Oil based polymers hardened with banned dioxins and 5% lead.
The gold coating is made from Nickel Silver and copper.
The ink as mentioned is from Honduras where squid is processed and the ink recovered, hardened with banned toxic substances, UV stabilized with banned toxic substances and laced again with lead.
Dogs will not touch it but baby infants will. Eating this product will cause blindness, mental disorders, memory loss and Death.
- sodoh, on 07/17/2008, -1/+10You want to know what is funnier about your comment. China has an import/export law that states that Taiwan must be referred to as "P.R.C.". America actually enforces this law.- transitive, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5some more details regarding this point
P.R.C. stands for People's Republic of China, which is what the mainland calls itself. They are more or less insisting that Mainland China's right of sovereignty over the island of Taiwan be recognized by the rest of the world.
The government of the island of Taiwan calls itself R.O.C., which stands for Republic of China. This division goes back to 1949 at the end of Chinese Civil War when the GuoMinDang nationalist party fled the mainland and essentially took over Taiwan. - sodoh, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0My bad. R.O.C. I can say BRB for Be right back, or LOL for Laugh out loud, or WTF for What the ***** and all the other 'text' speak, but I'm not allowed to shorten Girlfriend to GF because it sounds like 6th grade speak? How about SO for Significant Other? as 'officially' she is not my Fiance' yet, but as soon as the USCIS finishes the paperwork she will be my wife.
But Significant Other is usually reserved for two 'lovers' living together under one roof.
And rpong1981, so she went from being a stranger to being your fiance'? no 'Girlfriend' time there, where you were exclusively dating her and her alone? Or was it a special relationship where it was love at first sight and you both decided to get married together right away? Sorry, at some point the relationship went from 'girl' 'friend' to 'girlfriend' to 'fiance'
Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girlfriend
Girlfriend is a term that can refer to either a female partner in a non-marital romantic relationship or a female non-intimate friend. (as in 'Girl' 'Friend')
The term is most *commonly* used to describe any female person who is in a romantic relationship with another person. (as in 'Girlfriend' )
And IMDB http://www.imdb.com/keyword/boyfriend-girlfriend-r ...
shows 3867 movies with boyfriend-girlfriend relationships
/can shorten everything in the English language except Girlfriend. I agree Girlfriend sounds so 6th grade, but EVERYBODY knows what you mean when you say it.

We have a Capitalist Democracy.
The only part we can argue about is whether we are a Democracy. Seems it depends on which day it is...- TVarmy, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2We're more a representative democracy. Meaning that we choose who votes for us by recurring elections. True democracy would mean we could vote directly on everything, and some argue that a true democracy would also call for us not going through with anything until every last person eligable to vote agrees. Representative democracy seems the most feasible and fair form of government to me.
- Hangly, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1China is not a "dictatorship." All their officials are elected. They have a national assembly elected by the people, and that assembly elects their head of state.

1. Immigration was much, much easier.
2. There was no minimum wage preventing low-wage immigrants from being paid at their appropriate value
3. There was much less taxation on both businesses and wage-earners
4. There was much less regulation on business in general
Those of you who will argue that "the mexicans are taking american jobs" but also argue that "everything should be made in america" are arguing contradictory points.- dragnonfly310, on 07/17/2008, -10/+5Unless I'm misunderstanding your reply, what's your problem with this country wanting products made in the USA by legal citizens of the USA?
Just to soften the blow, I do honestly agree with you on points 3 and 4.- Quisquis, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3well, it's not capitalism... I think that's a start to what's wrong with it.
let me pose a question to you: What's wrong with legal citizens of the USA purchasing the cheapest of all available like items?
And as a final note: buying American doesn't mean buying a better product. Just look at the American auto industry and the American steel industry. They both are coming around, but for a long time they were a joke. - AbsurdParadox, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6Well, first of all, "this country" doesn't want anything. You can't simply collectivize 300 million people into one ideology.
However, I don't understand this whole "legal citizens" thing. I can see the sentiments about "illegals" creating a drain on the welfare state, however, aside from that, I think its simply xenophobic to hold a fear of low wage immigrant workers.
Its this nationalism that is the problem... not immigrant workers. - userperson, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1We must decrease our dependence upon foreign label pins, because ... 'um ... it's bad. /s

- oldhat, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4What if?

- oldhat, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4What if?
- oldhat, on 07/17/2008, -7/+16No minimum wage?!?!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Yeah, let's toss out those pesky worker protections our parents (and their parents, etc) suffered and sacrificed for.
Then let's rip up the constitution! (might as well!)
Americans are such fools, we should be running our country like Chinese run theirs!- AbsurdParadox, on 07/17/2008, -3/+12The best thing about your post is the fact that the minimum wage is unconstitutional.
Also, you seem to not understand a basic fact. Labor, like any product, is subject to market value.
All a minimum wage does is harm those who's labor would be below minimum wage value and raise the price of all things. It helps no one. - TracerBulletNPI, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3I agree with Absurd Paradox. Minimum wage has nothing to do with the constitution. Its simply a basic and shortsighted economic concept. It does more harm than good...
- Ymeg, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2I love how people think that minimum wage removal will make every lower class person poor, but they ignore the thousands of businesses who pay more than what the labor would actually cost.
- AbsurdParadox, on 07/17/2008, -3/+12The best thing about your post is the fact that the minimum wage is unconstitutional.
- reddog093, on 07/17/2008, -3/+4So, in a country that was founded on immigration, you want to make the immigrants poorer, make the government poorer with less taxes, make businesses wealthier due to paying less wages and taxes, and you want to put less regulation on businesses after we've had so many financial scandals in the past decade?
- AbsurdParadox, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4Illegals currently earn less than market value for their labor. Making them legal, and abolishing the minimum wage would increase their wages.
Yes, I absolutely want to make the government poorer. You try to use the founding of the country as an argument against me, yet you turn instantly to defending big-government? The federal government does not have the authority to do 90% of what it does.
I don't want businesses to be wealthier. I want all peoples to be wealthier. What I propose would achieve that.
Does regulation stop financial scandals? - reddog093, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1I'm all for making immigrants legal. But I don't understanding how abolishing the minimum wage would increase their wages..Minimum wage limits a decrease in wages.
You try to claim that I'm defending big-government because I understand the fact that our government needs money? More money than we can give? Even if we had a different president the situation would similar (with respect to the fact that we've owed more debt than we should have for decades). With political manners tying up a lot of our current funding, decreasing taxes would only hurt the vital services that our communities need. The federal government, it's programs, and state governments do actually have to pay for schools, roads, welfare, social security, and a bunch of other things with that money. You take away funding and the quality of life for the average American citizen will deteriorate.
And yes, regulation does stop certain financial scandals. Like any system, it is a system, and since it is made up of rules there will always be people who try to get around those rules. But you can't argue the fact that stricter regulation doesn't stop financial scandals. I'm a financial accountant and, although financial reporting has become more costly (to clients) and time consuming, oversight committees and legislation such as SOX are an effective deterrent and have helped increased financial transparency.
- AbsurdParadox, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4Illegals currently earn less than market value for their labor. Making them legal, and abolishing the minimum wage would increase their wages.
- TVarmy, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2The big problem is doing that would make America more like China. I think the real point to be derived from this is that maybe it's impossible for everything we want at the prices we like to be made in America.
I dugg you up not because I agree with you 100%, but I think people should see and consider your view. It's better developed than the average anti-globalization Fox News watcher's view.- AbsurdParadox, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2My positions are based on one simple fact. All people (from "sweat shop" 12 year olds sewing soccer balls to bajillionaires) deserve freedom. People should decide how to live their lives as they see fit, as long as they are not violating the rights of another (which is not freedom, but aggression). Anything impeding freedom only has negative effects, especially in the long run.
Speaking of anti-globalization Fox News watchers... I wonder if advocating no minimum wage yet open borders confuses those who think that you're either Left or Right, lol
- AbsurdParadox, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2My positions are based on one simple fact. All people (from "sweat shop" 12 year olds sewing soccer balls to bajillionaires) deserve freedom. - hivoltage815, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1We don't need more unskilled labor immigrants. We need to accept the fact that we have moved beyond manufacturing and seek out skilled workers from around the world (as well as work on education our own population)
- jpete71chevmal, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1You can't "move beyond manufacturing". It's the only way to build wealth. Services redistribute wealth, they do not create it. This is the attitude that has driven America down to where we are now.
- hivoltage815, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Wrong. You can still export natural resources without having to fully process them in the secondary sector. We still need miners, farmers, etc - but as far as blue collar jobs like assembly lines, there is no way we can match the cheap labor of other countries. And services in the non-basic sector is not what I am talking about, I am talking about services in the basic sector. International services dealing with computers, banking, etc - all of this brings in money from the global economy, makes the entire world more prosperous, and allows us to have a higher standard of living.
You can make the "proud to buy American products" argument but it doesn't change the reality. Therefore we must adapt.
- geffo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1do you really want those sort of jobs?
the USA is no longer under populated and is moving slowly to a greener way of living there is simply no need to waste the human potential of Americans on low wage jobs from highly polluting factories.- jpete71chevmal, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2You keep thinking like that. Factories don't automatically have to be polluting. The unfortunate reality is that making "things" is the only way to make wealth.
- geffo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1so you agree with me then?

patriotism? did they only save the americans? - Makurosu, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Come on, man. Embrace jingoism. You'll never be a good, god-fearing American making pansy-ass, liberal statements like that. Joe Sixpack knows what a patriotic American is - and by god he wears a ***** lapel pin.
- crapmatic, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I'll invent a line of clothing that has no lapels, then.
- john2kx, on 07/17/2008, -2/+36Bacon grease... Really? Who does that?

October 10, 2000
President Clinton closed years of political and economic debate Tuesday, and sealed a major achievement of his administration by signing a bill extending permanent, normal trade status to China.
"Today we take a major step toward China's entry into the World Trade Organization and a major step toward answering some of the central challenges of this new century,"
http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1 ...
Instead we have a growing trade deficit (lowering the dollar), loss of manufacturing jobs, rising Chinese demand for oil (raising the price)...In exchange we get cheap lead tainted junk!- fugazied, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2ok give all your stuff back to them, start with playstation 3, iphone, your motherboard, ram, cpu, well heck all of your computer gear. Thehn we can make it in the US, should only cost about $2000 for a basic computer. And you thought macs were expensive before? Try buying one which was made in the US.
- sirotocus, on 07/17/2008, -8/+3***** bill clinton. everytime i'm about to make a purchase of an american made product, that ***** comes in, tackles me, and puts some chinese ***** in my hand right before i check out.
damn democrats - hivoltage815, on 07/18/2008, -1/+5And congress just passed $48 BILLION to Africa for AIDS. Meanwhile our own people don't have health care, we are losing our economic prosperity, and that money is going to end up in the pockets of the pharmaceutical industry with no guarantee of the medicine ever reaching the people before war lords get it.
But the Democrats sure are proud of this legislation as is Bush. Bipartisan greed. - jack104, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Ahh clinton. I'd always hated him because of his lack of action. Now I can hate him for something he did. How do people not get this. If the administration made it impossible to get cheap ***** from China, then we, being the resourceful people that we are, would find another way, an american way, to get the things we need/want.
- dood, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3*I* could have been working in a factory making tiny flag pins. :(
- DestroyFascism, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3I could have been making the bags for the flag pins :(

- beerock, on 07/17/2008, -2/+17I read that the plus-sized-coffin manufacturing sector is booming.
- charlie55, on 07/17/2008, -7/+1you didnt read that, and it isnt funny.
- Rekutyn, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Actually, it is booming.
- beerock, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1It is hilarious.
Billions starve while those on top eat themselves stupid..
Hilarious!
- charlie55, on 07/17/2008, -7/+1you didnt read that, and it isnt funny.

- FolkTheory, on 07/17/2008, -8/+4im confused...all those that dugg me down believe china's economic boom will last forever??
are they just stupid or are they delusional?- Hangly, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Explain why it won't.
- sphoony, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2I bet you no one here works in manufactering and if you do, it's not on the plant floor.
- WiretapStudios, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2We buy manufacturing plants that have been shut down and sent overseas. Sometimes people are still using the equipment we are there to pick up. Pretty weird.
- RunningboardV2, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1i do and i work on the plant floor. did you want to say something to me?
- MattB123, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4I was handed a made in China American flag on the 4th that had the text printed right on the flag. I meant to take a photo and post it but my kid got a hold of it before I could and I haven;t seen it since.
I too find it funny that it's often the same people who are pissed with Mexicans taking jobs who also get upset when things like this are manufactured in other countries. You need to just choose one of those things for your outrage. - DiscoLando, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7I'm simply stating a fact. Any attempt to place a positive or negative spin onto it is merely a reflection of your own personal prejudice. :)

/Yeah, DIGG me down. Lots of us love this country, so get over it.- dragnonfly310, on 07/17/2008, -3/+5Oh, so the only measure of loving this country is support for the Iraq war or support for any war for that matter??? Since freakin' when? Gimme an answer that's based on fact, not emotion, please.
- ericjohnson0, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4No, but I can't think of any group of people other than the military who could make the realistic claim they love the country more.
Its easy to piss and moan about problems, but to be willing to give your life for America? No one else can even come close to being that patriotic. - whatisnotmyname, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3@ Eric: How about those of us that pay more in taxes per year than most soldiers will ever come near earning so that the soldiers who aren't fighting can be paid 40k a year to answer phones, paint boats, move boxes, re-arrange desks for their superior officers, play x-box when guard duty gets too boring (ok, so a lot of that is Navy specific... I'm sure there are people here who can offer similar experiences from other branches)
Most members of the armed services I know didn't sign up because they loved the country. They signed up because nobody else was willing to pay them that much for the skills they don't have. Many signed up before there was a war and then became pissed that "what, there's a chance I'll have to fight? I didn't sign up for that!" Of the ones I know that signed up after, there's lots of "my recruiter told me I looked like I was heading for a nice desk job in North Carolina, but when that fell through I ended up overseas" stories, and more than a few "I can't afford college, didn't like the choice of jobs (and couldn't get them if I wanted) so I didn't have much choice."
And besides, the whole "you can't criticize the war unless you fight it" thing is so passe. Anyone can criticize anyone else. That's one of those freedoms the soldiers are supposed to be protecting.
- ericjohnson0, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4No, but I can't think of any group of people other than the military who could make the realistic claim they love the country more.

- Live4Soccer, on 07/17/2008, -7/+36Soon it will be a Chinese Flag with a "Made in the United States of America" stamp on the package - at the rate our economy is going....
- bitterscream, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4Unless the US can provide cheaper labour then Africa or other parts of East Asia then I wouldn't bet money on it. Things seemed so much better when we were protectionist rather than globalizationalist.
- Hangly, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Africa doesn't have the stability, education or infrastructure. ...Yet.
And companies are already opening plants in the US to exploit the cheap labor. That's what that Deimler-Chrysler plant in Alabama is.

- DickInyerhole, on 07/17/2008, -8/+2Please move out of the country if you hate it so much, then after you do, please complain to the government you chose to live under about how they aren't shoveling out both national and international free health care.
Enjoy your taxes liberalbandwagoners. -
