Going to rehab instead of prison is good policy, because it's about helping the person rehabilitate and heal. And it often works, unlike prison. And if you think it's just the rich, step into an NA meeting some time.

      Politics on Digg isn't about fairness, justice, or truth. It's about sanctifying your candidate, and vilifying their opposition.

But the writer is pointing out the hypocrisy, since the right-wing media is generally opposed to those policies until it effects them personally. A poor, black person who committed that same crime would have a tough time keeping out of jail because they don't get to have Rush Limbaugh's lawyers in there with them.

        And beyond the drug use is the fact that this was stealing from a charity. That does make it worse.

        At any rate, I don't think that this makes Cindy McCain a bad person. I actually think that everyone should get the same chances she had with the judicial system. I do, however, think that Ms. McCain should be a little careful about dragging Michelle Obama's name through the mud. If the fight gets dirty, she has her own personal history that she wouldn't want put under the spotlight.

Take the moral high road. By publishing this article, Stephen Elliott is disgracing Democrats. He criticizes Cindy for references to always being proud of her country, and then he does far worse by finding links to stories of her drug addiction. That shows even less class.

          I'll probably be buried by a swarm of Obama-supporters if they don't bother to read what I'm saying. I'm not saying that it's good for Cindy McCain to attack Michelle Obama. I am saying that you're doing even worse if you promote this, an article that A) does the same thing everyone denounces; and B) gets even more personal.

Cindy McCain is attacking Michelle Obama for her "unpatriotic" comments, but how patriotic is it to steal medicine meant for third world countries just so she could get high? It is simply being pointed out how hypocritical she is. This article is even more important because most Americans have a more favorable view of Cindy then of Michelle, and the opinion of the first lady can affect votes.

        However, a poor, black person would very likely get the same punishment: required rehab. In Narcotics Anonymous, 8 of 11 people where I attended were busted and serving their time in rehab. And ALL of them were poor, blue-collar, missing teeth (a sign of lack of money), and minorities.

        And I agree that the theft makes it worse. But it is also very common for drug addicts to steal drugs, or steal money to get drugs. Several of the people in NA admitted to it, and I have to include myself. Drug addiction drives you to the worse things you can imagine. That's not an excuse, you still need to be held accountable... but the required rehab is part of that accountability.

Because that's a pretty old argument (good or bad) regarding the lack of organization. Secondly, lack of organization doesn't relate to Digg very much from my perspective. Actually, Digg is very well organized. Ideas and intended meaning frequently get fleshed out on this forum, in large part because of the fabulous design.

        So, again, how exactly did your participation on Digg encourage your belief that people on "the left" are less organized?

That she only got a slap on the wrist and this blew over quickly tells us a lot more about who McCain would be if he's president. I for one don't want someone in office who is too self involved to notice his wife's addiction if it was plainly obvious to others. We have already had one president that chooses to see the world without reading newspapers or seeking others opinions and we can see the damage that's caused. We don't need another president that doesn't pay attention to those around him and when things go bad tries to cover it up. We've had that for 8 years and it doesn't work.

At first I found its openly-slanted and outwardly opinionated editorials refreshingly honest, but I also must admit that I have read Malkin and watched O'Reilly and had similar reactions (its hard not to disagree with the ACLU's dogmatic stances sometimes). I don't read THE HP anymore--for the same reason no decent individual buys into Malkin, O'Reily or Limbaugh--because they knowingly foment an Us versus Them mentality in order to build emotional ties with their audiences, which in turn leads to an inability to rationalize alternative points of view, the unneeded polarization of society, and the sort of blind-hatred that dominates both extremes of the parties.

    Complete and total political *****. In almost every state, you get caught for drug addiction, you go to rehab. This is the BEST THING that the government has done in terms of drug policy.

    I attended Narcotics Anonymous a few times, and 8 guys there were required to have papers signed because of convictions. And they ALL were blue-collar, dock workers, or poor veterans. Not a single "rich" person in the lot. Huffington Post -- politics over truth -- has reached a new low.

      I agree it's incredibly sad she stole from her charity. Drug addiction can drive to you things that are just absolutely horrible. And, yes, she still needs to be held accountable for it... and the required rehab is part of that accountability.

    I want to look at the person who will be elected President. I have! and I have come the conclusion that I would rather be wrong in voting for Obama than right in electing McCain.

    I would rather waste a vote on a young, charismatic, logical, plain speaking and honest candidate than make my vote count and voting for an old, unimaginative, uninspiring and entrenched in the old way of thinking dinosaur candidate.

    No one is perfect and Obama seems to understand that dredging up crap does nothing to improve the process. I hope that Obama follows through on his pledge to lead a clean no mud path to the White House.

What is cause for the article is the way with which she found treatment and the subsequent lack of action because of her husband and his clout. It's one thing to be an addict to pain killers it's another to be a family that ignores it then willfully gets others to collude in both the illegal distribution of the substances to further her addiction and then try to cover it up.
