Stephen Elliott: As Long As We're Talking About Michelle Oba
huffingtonpost.com — Mrs. McCain was adicted to prescription pain killers, stole them from a non-profit agency where the stolen drugs were intended for the poor, and avoided jail by going to rehab.

- EatingPie, on 06/20/2008, -19/+11If this was any other person, it would be a *good* thing and defended here on Digg. Going to rehab instead of prison is good policy, because it's about helping the person rehabilitate and heal. And it often works, unlike prison. And if you think it's just the rich, step into an NA meeting some time.
Politics on Digg isn't about fairness, justice, or truth. It's about sanctifying your candidate, and vilifying their opposition.
-Pie- hipnerd, on 06/20/2008, -1/+17I agree with you, Pie. rehab instead of jail is generally sound policy. But the writer is pointing out the hypocrisy, since the right-wing media is generally opposed to those policies until it effects them personally. A poor, black person who committed that same crime would have a tough time keeping out of jail because they don't get to have Rush Limbaugh's lawyers in there with them.
And beyond the drug use is the fact that this was stealing from a charity. That does make it worse.
At any rate, I don't think that this makes Cindy McCain a bad person. I actually think that everyone should get the same chances she had with the judicial system. I do, however, think that Ms. McCain should be a little careful about dragging Michelle Obama's name through the mud. If the fight gets dirty, she has her own personal history that she wouldn't want put under the spotlight.- cpk121, on 06/20/2008, -6/+5It's extremely hypocritical to scream and rave about Michelle Obama being brought into this (as I think we all agree she shouldn't be) and then to do the exact same thing with Cindy McCain (as, by the same logic, she shouldn't be). Take the moral high road. By publishing this article, Stephen Elliott is disgracing Democrats. He criticizes Cindy for references to always being proud of her country, and then he does far worse by finding links to stories of her drug addiction. That shows even less class.
I'll probably be buried by a swarm of Obama-supporters if they don't bother to read what I'm saying. I'm not saying that it's good for Cindy McCain to attack Michelle Obama. I am saying that you're doing even worse if you promote this, an article that A) does the same thing everyone denounces; and B) gets even more personal. - egoideal, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7CPK you simply don't seem to get why this article is being dugg. Cindy McCain is attacking Michelle Obama for her "unpatriotic" comments, but how patriotic is it to steal medicine meant for third world countries just so she could get high? It is simply being pointed out how hypocritical she is. This article is even more important because most Americans have a more favorable view of Cindy then of Michelle, and the opinion of the first lady can affect votes.

- EatingPie, on 06/21/2008, -2/+1Thanks for the reply hipnerd.
However, a poor, black person would very likely get the same punishment: required rehab. In Narcotics Anonymous, 8 of 11 people where I attended were busted and serving their time in rehab. And ALL of them were poor, blue-collar, missing teeth (a sign of lack of money), and minorities.
And I agree that the theft makes it worse. But it is also very common for drug addicts to steal drugs, or steal money to get drugs. Several of the people in NA admitted to it, and I have to include myself. Drug addiction drives you to the worse things you can imagine. That's not an excuse, you still need to be held accountable... but the required rehab is part of that accountability.

- vegask, on 06/20/2008, -5/+3October surprise in June!!!!
3 years of drug abuse.. There is probably a ton of dirt on what went on for those three years so this could just be the tip of the iceberg.
I bet MSNBC will run this story. - jiganto, on 06/20/2008, -2/+2They do it because they don't expect Obama to retaliate directly. Since he is trying to run a clean campaign, they can say whatever they want about his wife and expect him not to retaliate in any direct manner.
What needs to happen is for an unafilliated, to Obama campaign, party to run the story. - FelixdaaHack, on 06/20/2008, -8/+2This comes across as desperate and in poor taste. Comments about Michelle were made regarding her public comments. Nobody hired thugs to dig up dirt on her. So sad to see the Obama camp taking the election in that direction.
- pensivewombat, on 06/21/2008, -5/+2Also lets not forget Obama's own past drug use. Frankly I'm surprised the republicans haven't tried to make that more of an issue. Fortunately I think most people are finally coming around to the fact that drug addiction is a medical and social issue and not a criminal issue (as opposed to large scale drug trafficking, which brings along a host of other problems.)

And really, the idea of *hoping* that stuff like this becomes a part of the debate nothing short of sad. This is the sort of garbage from both sides we do. Not. Need. No matter the target, no matter which side it's coming from. It's unproductive. It's weak.
Shame on you for wishing more of it on us. - whataboutdave, on 06/20/2008, -4/+3So your disappointment that one candidates wife has her image tarnished is followed by a desire that her counterpart be dragged through the mud as well? Classy.
- samoan27, on 06/20/2008, -5/+3Yes lets confirm the fact that Democrats are just as pathetic as petty as Republicans. I'm a conservative who has started siding with the democrats because of all the unethical ways the republicans discredit their opponents and make a mockery of what should be the real issues. But the more I'm on Digg and see articles dugg up from sites like HuffingtonPost.com and CrooksAndLiars.com I think that the left is just as bad only less organized. Seriously, if you dugg this article you're pathetic, and a black eye to what's left of the good Democratic party's name.
- YukosEyes, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0Full disclosure, I don't identify with being a Democrat or a Republican. That said, I have a question for you.
Did you really begin to think that "the left" is just as bad as the right only less organized due to your participating on Digg? Because that's a pretty old argument (good or bad) regarding the lack of organization. Secondly, lack of organization doesn't relate to Digg very much from my perspective. Actually, Digg is very well organized. Ideas and intended meaning frequently get fleshed out on this forum, in large part because of the fabulous design.
So, again, how exactly did your participation on Digg encourage your belief that people on "the left" are less organized?

Other beneficiaries of our nation's War on Drugs have been jailed for years for less.
Plus, she was having an affair with McCain while he was still married to his first wife. The loyal older wife he dumped to marry the rich anorexic blonde. Note that she doesn't let McCain touch her finances (it's all in her, and the children's, names). Unfortunately attacking competitor's wives goes waaay back and will continue into the future.- anubis2night, on 06/20/2008, -1/+2I think the McCain issue is a valid one not that she was once a addict that can happen but in her actions and rather lack of action from her husband, until it was far too late, and she had already broken many laws. That she only got a slap on the wrist and this blew over quickly tells us a lot more about who McCain would be if he's president. I for one don't want someone in office who is too self involved to notice his wife's addiction if it was plainly obvious to others. We have already had one president that chooses to see the world without reading newspapers or seeking others opinions and we can see the damage that's caused. We don't need another president that doesn't pay attention to those around him and when things go bad tries to cover it up. We've had that for 8 years and it doesn't work.
- LastVisibleDog, on 06/20/2008, -6/+2This crap comes from the Democrats (the attacks on Obama's baby mama started from the Hillary camp) - this article is slim from another democRAT source - yet you parroting the slogan "it is all the Republicans fault" - you are clearly just a Democrat sock-puppet - does it hurt when your democRAT handlers ram their hand up your arse to move your lips?

- Whatiffafarr, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1As a long time enthusiast of Salon I wanted to find some other sources of intelligently written independent journalism, and via Google Directory was brought to the Huffington Post about three months ago. At first I found its openly-slanted and outwardly opinionated editorials refreshingly honest, but I also must admit that I have read Malkin and watched O'Reilly and had similar reactions (its hard not to disagree with the ACLU's dogmatic stances sometimes). I don't read THE HP anymore--for the same reason no decent individual buys into Malkin, O'Reily or Limbaugh--because they knowingly foment an Us versus Them mentality in order to build emotional ties with their audiences, which in turn leads to an inability to rationalize alternative points of view, the unneeded polarization of society, and the sort of blind-hatred that dominates both extremes of the parties.

Complete and total political *****. In almost every state, you get caught for drug addiction, you go to rehab. This is the BEST THING that the government has done in terms of drug policy.
I attended Narcotics Anonymous a few times, and 8 guys there were required to have papers signed because of convictions. And they ALL were blue-collar, dock workers, or poor veterans. Not a single "rich" person in the lot. Huffington Post -- politics over truth -- has reached a new low.

The crime Cindy McCain committed was stealing drugs, and yes, most people who steal drugs go to jail.
You fail at both reading comprehension and using your head for something other then keeping your ears apart. - EatingPie, on 06/21/2008, -1/+1Theft of drugs, or theft of money to get drugs, is very common for addicts. Some of them were there for that very thing. Others, caught for something else, but still had stolen for drugs.
I agree it's incredibly sad she stole from her charity. Drug addiction can drive to you things that are just absolutely horrible. And, yes, she still needs to be held accountable for it... and the required rehab is part of that accountability.

I want to look at the person who will be elected President. I have! and I have come the conclusion that I would rather be wrong in voting for Obama than right in electing McCain.
I would rather waste a vote on a young, charismatic, logical, plain speaking and honest candidate than make my vote count and voting for an old, unimaginative, uninspiring and entrenched in the old way of thinking dinosaur candidate.
No one is perfect and Obama seems to understand that dredging up crap does nothing to improve the process. I hope that Obama follows through on his pledge to lead a clean no mud path to the White House.- ender7074, on 06/20/2008, -7/+4Nice. The only thing you got even close to correct was by accident..because I do not consider myself a liberal. McCain is old in the way he thinks. Old in his views. Old in his politics. Old in his perspectives. I don't care what year he was born.- ender7074, on 06/20/2008, -3/+1/yawn my point still stands *****. Would you like me to elaborate more. So you want an inexperienced moron who can read and that lies through his teeth on a daily basis and "waste" a vote instead of listening to both candidates and finding the one that matches your values. Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.
D-Day: Let's do it.
Bluto: LET'S DO IT!
I am just saying I don't care if my vote for Obama turns out to be historically futile. I want to see a change in the system that is bigger than the two candidates running today. Oh and I still do think Obama has the chance to be great...I just hope he doesn't lose his way on the path.

Its really too bad that so many think that this is acceptable information.
- anubis2night, on 06/20/2008, -2/+2Actually while the candidates have made efforts to limit the old style political back biting, there's nothing wrong with political reporters doing their job and reporting news. That Mrs. McCain would choose to speak against Mrs. Obama is what opened the door, as evidenced by both the opening of the article and the fact that they waited until she spoke to bring up this old news. Now I agree with you that it would be nice to see the issues but in this case with the situation I think that it reflects directly with how McCain and his wife might act in office. I for one have had enough of people in the white house covering up the truth to hide their own sins and malfeasants. If politicians have a steam of bile lurking around them and they will do to both being human and the hubris that political candidates must have to run for office in the first place, I want to know what it is. I always kick the tires so to speak when I'm looking at a vehicle and will check the engine if used and the documentation of records for maintenance. I would think no different of the future president of the US.

If the situations were reversed, Michelle Obama would be revered for having beat her disease and Cindy McCain would be demonized. You people are atrocious.
- anubis2night, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I fail to see how being addicted to drugs is a disease. If anything it's a chemical dependancy within the brain, specifically within the neural pleasure centers, with this type of addiction it is treatable, and by no means is it something to be judged about. What is cause for the article is the way with which she found treatment and the subsequent lack of action because of her husband and his clout. It's one thing to be an addict to pain killers it's another to be a family that ignores it then willfully gets others to collude in both the illegal distribution of the substances to further her addiction and then try to cover it up. As for your comments about Mrs. Obama being an elitist or a racist bitch, I'll let your ignorance and your compassion for the white rich woman, show you for the closed minded racist you are.

- TheLoneHoot, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3"The election of 2008 may be the ugliest in history - thanks to the DemocRAT Slim Machines
The RATS know Obama is an empty shirt so they are forced to smear early, smear often"
Says the pot to the kettle...
Remember a guy named Karl Rove?
- Gutterpunk, on 06/20/2008, -2/+4You are the reason why the world sees Americans as stupid assholes. Not that YOU care, because you are evidently crazy (and possibly racists), but it's just sad that you give such a bad name to "normal" Americans
- robopuppy, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1You know, when I read the headline for this article, all I could think of is "why are we stooping to their level?" I really despise the eye-for-an-eye mentality. "***** you!" "How dare you say that to me! ***** you!" This childish and hypocritical act will probably end up hurting Obama rather than helping him as intended.
We have to be better than these people, people, or we lose our credibility! Let McCain and Laura Bush talk about not attacking a candidate's wife and look like hypocrites, don't bring it over here.- LastVisibleDog, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1You say "we" like you assume everybody on Digg are Democrat sock-puppets.
Liberals assume a lot - and are wrong a lot.
Your side spews ***** and you desperately try to spin it as a Republican problem - they don't call people like you sock-puppets for nothing.
- LastVisibleDog, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1You say "we" like you assume everybody on Digg are Democrat sock-puppets.
- km6847, on 06/20/2008, -7/+2So, if some Hollywood actor goes to rehab, we must celebrate them as strong, worthwhile people. But any Republican that does the same thing is a worthless pile of crap? Is that how we do it liberals?
- brsmnky007, on 06/20/2008, -1/+4Again, I believe the real story is the ultra-wealthy socialite stealing her illegal prescription drugs from a charity. I don't think that's just an issue to the "liberals"; at least it shouldn't be. Furthermore, I believe the subtext here is that it is Cindy McCain who threw the first stones at Michelle Obama, despite living in a glass house of colossal proportions. I agree with those who argue that the potential first ladies should be left largely out of the mud pit of politics. I just hope that those condemning this story about Mrs. McCain as "out of bounds" were condemning just as vehemently the attacks on Mrs. Obama. I have my doubts, however...
- MaddieCakes, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Really? 'Cause most of the celebrities that go to rehab STILL get made fun of, as far as I know. I've never seen special social treatment.
- JDFrancis, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1What planet are you living on where celebrities don't rightly take some hits for being drug addicts? Cindy "Amy Winehouse" McCain is taking zero flack for her theft and addiction. At least Amy Winehouse doesn't steal her drugs from poor people.
- Skippy989, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7Every time I see Cindy McCain I cant help but worry about the children trapped in the basement of her house made of candy in the woods.
- Suneet67, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2rofl
- KingOoohEe, on 06/20/2008, -3/+1*****, rich people get all the good drugs. And for free. And with no consequences. All I have to do now is own Budweiser and I can dope myself up all day long with medicine intended for starving Afrikans or whatever. I bet she's still on the pills cause nobody wants to take a dickin from ol Johnny boy. My only advice to her is don't buy from Nick Kaczur, he's a rat.
- Spoomeister, on 06/20/2008, -5/+2Do we get to elect Cindy McCain?
Do we get to elect Michelle Obama?
No on both?
Then I don't ***** care.- tjrecord, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0Well nowadays you don't know whose wife is going to be running for President...
- goes211, on 06/20/2008, -5/+0Obama - For Change!
Meet the New Boss… Same as the Old Boss. - arvvvs, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4Just stop attacking both of them. Obama is right when families are out. And Michelle is a bit outspoken, but Cindy is a bit snobbish. And the media so far has attacked Michelle more. Both the "left" and the "right" wing.
But we should stop attacking the wives. Both the Huffington Post and the candidates, with their wives.
An Eye for an Eye makes the world blind.- exomni, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1*****. We should be fair and balanced. If you're going to dig on Michelle in constant endless loops and media attention, you sure as ***** hell better point out Cindy is a thieving heiress junky.
Jesus, even heiress Paris Hilton hasn't sunk to the low Cindy did: stealing drugs from children in third-world countries.
- exomni, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1*****. We should be fair and balanced. If you're going to dig on Michelle in constant endless loops and media attention, you sure as ***** hell better point out Cindy is a thieving heiress junky.
- mikeevegas, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3WTF, who cares about the past's of wives of the presidential candidates. I hate our politics and media here in the US.
- CucumberBoy, on 06/20/2008, -0/+0I know, it seems really irrelevant. But a lot of first ladies have influenced their husbands politics. That's the problem...
- DiggasWAttitude, on 06/20/2008, -0/+0At least we don't have a royal family like the Brits. Every single aspect of their lives is viewed through a collective microscope. While I despise ***** like this Huff Post piece, the US did not start this trend. I think its human nature to turn leaders into celebrities which in turn makes their personal lives, and the lives of their family members, seem more interesting.
All I want is a leader who is smart enough to surround him/herself with honest and intelligent staff willing to speak truth to power. I could give two ***** about their families, pastors, war commendations, skin color, sex or age. Too much to ask? Probably.
