AUDIO: Fox's John Gibson Mocks 'Weirdo' Heath Ledger's Death
thinkprogress.org — Opening his radio show with funeral music yesterday, Fox News host John Gibson mocked the death of actor Heath Ledger, calling him a “weirdo” with a “serious drug problem.”Playing an audio clip of, “I wish I knew how to quit you” from Ledger’s Brokeback Mountain, Gibson disdainfully quipped, “Well, he found out how to quit you.”

***** Jerry Falwell, too bad he didn't die years earlier. Enjoy your time in hell, you racist, homophobic *****. Hopefully someone runs a train on your corpse
I hope it's not too hot where he's at right now.
Oh wait. I do.
Good riddance you ***** whore. I hope you're burning in a place you've feared in your life.
In other news: hell just got a little fatter
The ***** is dead. This is a gift from the FSM, Time to celebrate!
screw you, Jerry and your whole Christian Taliban "community".
The world becomes a better place every time a scumbag like Falwell kicks it
It's not wrong to be a little happy when scumbags who exploit religion to mask their hatred finally pass on.
i just hope he stays dead
***** your "community" of racist, sexist homophobic bigots
He will be missed. Just not by me
Okay, let's see, reasons for being polite and not criticising him after his death:
People liked him, and they wouldn't appreciate insults to the man this soon after he died.
-Hitler had even more people that liked him... And yet no one said it wasn't cool to criticize him after his death... I really don't see why people should suddenly be nice to a guy simply because other people are sad that he's gone...
It is morally wrong to criticize the dead:
-There's a bit of a taboo, yes, because they can't defend themselves, but it's hardly wrong. I don't think there's any major belief system that exhibits any way this would harm said dead person in an afterlife, and I see no reason a pattern that doesn't anymore exist diserves respect, let alone more respect than they would've received in life.
It's bigoted and intolerant to attack a dead guy (or to attack homophobes, I'm not quite sure what you guys are trying to imply).
-As we aren't being disrespectful to the other 147,000 people that died in the last 24 hours (if we're consistant with the average), I'll respond as if it's the second one, which almost makes sense... Discouraging intolerance isn't an effort not to keep anyone from hating anyone, it's an effort to keep anyone from hating anyone on superficial criteria which don't necisarily reflect the individual... Hating those who have exposed views that one thinks are disgusting is not intollerance.
Reasons to criticize him.
-He was polarizing people to religious extremism or not and ultimately doing harm to the country, discussing this could help heal wounds.
-He was a douche.
The pros outweigh the cons.
Should i go on?- ElWizardo, on 01/24/2008, -2/+17But it's all true.
- floorman56, on 01/24/2008, -6/+5What ? Diggs hypocrisy?
- the6thReplicant, on 01/24/2008, -2/+10Brilliant! You're comparing people on a forum (admittedly a public one) to someone with a syndicated radio show. Sure people say nasty things in "private" but when someone sticks a microphone in your face and you say these things either a) you've never been on radio before and never will or (b) YOU ARE TOTALLY INSANE.
I know you think you're smart "proving" people wrong but your argument falls down (not necessarily 100% mind you) when you realize the context and place.- Charlotte_Web, on 01/24/2008, -6/+2Lighten up.
It's a radio show. Radio show hosts often say provacative things because it gets people to call in.
John Gibson wasn't a Heath Ledger fan. Who really effing cares? Aside from all of the Fox haters on Digg, that is...
- Charlotte_Web, on 01/24/2008, -6/+2Lighten up.
- funkytaco, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9Comparing Digger's comments to a public figuires public comments is like comparing Paris Hilton's singing to ... anybody that can sing.
There is a big difference. - anachronaut, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9Jerry Falwell made a career of being an intolerant, hateful pig and a thoroughly disgusting human being. As far as I know, Heath Ledger was just a regular guy.
There's a big, BIG difference between someone [the Diggers you're criticizing] not tolerating or mocking intolerance (and hatred, hypocrisy and bigotry and all of the other "sins" of which Falwell was gleefully guilty) and someone who's just being hateful or spiteful in general [John Gibson and sleazeballs like him] about the death of a human who happened to portray a homosexual in a popular movie. Obviously, you are failing to make that distinction for whatever reason.
Heath Ledger didn't make a career of preaching hate. That fat ***** Falwell did, and he reaped what he sowed.- SenorCardgage74, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Naw, reaping what he sowed would have been getting ***** to death by a pack of syphilitic Rhesus monkeys and that isnt at all what happened.

- insertcleverid, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9Nothing wrong with continuing to call an ***** an *****, just because he's a live ***** one minute and a dead ***** latter. Assholes are assholes are assholes, and Jerry Falwell lived an *****, died an *****. What did Heath Ledger ever do to anybody?
- BabyWookie, on 01/24/2008, -1/+4He was in a movie that promoted a sinful, perverted life-style.

- 1159, on 01/24/2008, -3/+10Here's the difference since it's not immediately obvious to you. John Gibson is an asshat spewing his ***** onto the public airwaves, whereas people here on Digg are private citizens *without their own radio or tv show*. So please spare us your halfwit comparison. - therightclique, on 01/24/2008, -3/+1everybody else has deduced the cause 2 days ago.

- therightclique, on 01/24/2008, -3/+1everybody else has deduced the cause 2 days ago.
- Nitesmoke, on 01/24/2008, -12/+44He reminds me of the one thousand assholes who, after about an hour of his death, and ten minutes on Digg, had posted the lamest jokes about it. They were all incredibly unfunny, ie "Did Batman kill him," and insensitive. The worse part wasn't the number of jokes, but when I asked people to chill out, I was buried almost deeper than I ever had been. It really makes one lose all faith in their fellow man. I could understand if it was the death of some ***** douchebag, but almost every one thought this was a genuinely good guy, not to mention a loving father, but I must remind myself that this is Digg, where the average user age is dropping daily and its painfully obvious.
- smacksaw, on 01/24/2008, -3/+7Actually, I bet one of those accounts was actually John Gibson.
- bjornski, on 01/24/2008, -0/+10Gibson isn't smart enough to navigate Digg. I'd be surprised if he can even turn a computer on.
- digitalhair, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6I agree. I've been surprised by having been buried down for trying to preserve the human element, and I'm puzzled by this because it's not reflective of my experience in public when I observed people getting the news about Ledger's death. I have a gut feeling that there are a bunch of neocon or lost Christian plugs out there just shelling digg with disinformation, poor logic, self-absorbed & self-loathing quips, and putrid little Anne-Coulter-like mortaring from behind enemy lines, or from behind their convenient anonymous internet nodes which are perpetually burdened by streams of porn and faceless political hackery, taking up half of their free time - the other half spent subconsciously punishing themselves or their families/neighbors/coworkers/patrons for the loss of self and lack of any purpose that inevitably propogates itself due to this kind of behavior. SADLY, they will never realize why a person like myself would take the time to write something thoughtful in a website's comments section in an attempt to restore the balance.
- llamaguy132, on 01/24/2008, -7/+2if you find the 'did batman kill him' joke to be insensitive I'm going to have to disagree with your whole statement. what John Gibson said was offensive and crude, the simple jokes and word plays that were posted Tuesday were both funny, harmless, and necessary for many people to cope.
- Nitesmoke, on 01/24/2008, -1/+5What are you, 12?
- therightclique, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3a.) they're NOT funny and b.) they're NOT accurate. batman doesn't kill people.
- ehalasey, on 01/24/2008, -2/+1You had me right up to the ageist comment at the end. Thanks for being the old fart who shakes his cane at those dang kids. Meanwhile, age has nothing to do with it, and you should know better.
- Nitesmoke, on 01/24/2008, -1/+1do you disagree that younger people have a more immature sense of humor?
- ehalasey, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1I disagree with ageism. Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt.

- MrNexus, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1So then we can agree that there is just something wrong with his brain?
- Roland1232, on 01/24/2008, -4/+1Blinding you with his acumen.
- bosssmiley, on 01/24/2008, -3/+33A fine young actor like Heath Ledger dead, while a dick like John Gibson is in rude good health. There's no justice in this world. :-|
- tanglelace, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4I agree, I wish there was a sort of democratic trade in policy with death. We'd have a prime candidate here to trade for Heath.
- briguymaine, on 01/24/2008, -34/+6who cares? He was an actor who was so self absorbed that he left a 2 yr old daughter behind, that's pathetic in my book. There's no reason to mourn this guy, my thoughts are with the little one.
- NotOptium, on 01/24/2008, -3/+17There's a difference between mourning and showing someone a little respect. I can't think of any time where I've mourned a celebrity's death, but even if he made some mistakes in his life he deserves some respect.
- oldhick, on 01/24/2008, -16/+7I think its how respect is dished out on digg that is the problem. After countless threads of people wishing pain and suffering on anyone who isn't a Ron Paul supporter or a blue blooded dem, it gets old. You read comment after comment about how evil religion is and the faithful are the biggest morons and should be rounded up, one begins to wonder if RESPECT has any place at all on Digg. Then out of the blue, Heath Ledger dies and everyone on Digg is suddenly respectful... Come on.
I myself find the hypocrisy disgusting.- bosssmiley, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9I think the difference is that Heath Ledger did nothing to deserve opprobrium. He was just a guy who made some films a lot of us liked, and who died - lost and depressed - before his talent reached its zenith.
Silly religious bigots who fail to understand the message of peace, tolerance and forbearance inherent in their own religion deserve our contempt, as do scammers who dress their con job up in religious garb or a national flag.

- queenstarsha, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1people don't always deserve respect, though. i honestly was pleased when jerry falwell died, i don't blame people who were happy to see saddam go, and when bin laden and dick cheney die, i won't be a bit sad. but they've all gone out of their ways to persecute other people. heath ledger was... a young actor with a lot of potential. he didn't hurt anyone. what kind of ***** gets his kicks out of that guy dying? a republican *****, i guess.

- themanflounders, on 01/24/2008, -8/+298What a disgusting human being. This kind of absence of humanity is everything that could possible be wrong with a person. And this is the sort of nonchalant hate that runs through people like wildfire based entirely on ignorance and separation from reality. We should fight these sorts of people every single day of our lives, with every single breath. When someone you know tells you this is the sort of thing they listen to, or that these ideas are the ideas they subscribe to, everything should be done to put that hatred to rest. That this sort of person can be popular and successful in this country is everything that is wrong with the U.S. today. It's depressing, despicable, and terrifying.
- NotOptium, on 01/24/2008, -3/+40This is the same guy who mocked Jon Stewart when he cried on The Daily Show right after 9/11 and said he was faking.

No, he's a hateful and despicable piece of fried *****, but the beauty of the US is he can act that way. Freedom cannot be censored, even if you're a Westboro Baptist church member or a old hack on the radio.- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -1/+2Amen to that, dshPls... free speech. The more Gibson talks like this, and the more people like us who hate him complain about it, the more likely his ratings will go down and he will not be able to make money off of his ignorance. But we CAN'T kill free speech (like Bush wants to do).
I'm glad this was also on Olbermann's show last night. Gibson needs to be pwned and fired. - christor, on 01/24/2008, -0/+5I think themanflounder's point was that it's sad that people enjoy this guy enough to make him successful, not that it's sad that he's allowed to speak. I agree that it's a sad commentary that our TV market is such that this guy is popular enough to be given a show. I'm all for his ability to speak, but I wish the people of our country were such that he'd be relegated, by virtue of market forces rather than government censorship, to spewing hate while carrying a sign in the public square (convincing no one and bringing upon himself only pity) - or perhaps on some rarely visited website no one cares about.
One more thing - Gibson is an example of the kind of "elite" conservative whose views and actions can only be explained by observing that he's antisocial and weird. Though he may vote like millions in the so-called red states, he shares none of their true values. See also, Bill O'Reilly, Jonah Goldberg, the rest of the NRO, Coulter, that other one, etc. That this crop of oddballs has found a way to exploit the values and fears of so many is one of the tragic stories of recent America.
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -1/+2Amen to that, dshPls... free speech. - Oozinator, on 01/24/2008, -1/+1Floorman, no one said Gibson isn't entitled to his ridiculous opinions, or that he doesn't have a right to express them. NO ONE, however, has a RIGHT to such a forum to broadcast their foolish bile. It's too bad certain parts of our media and their viewers have no standards.
- Izult, on 01/24/2008, -1/+2actually he's got every right to broadcast it.. just like we have the right to not listen to his filth and by that action run him off the air.

- Bamont, on 01/24/2008, -6/+11Not only that, you also have to share "American" with him, as well. You know - it never ceases to amaze me how many of you pander day in and day out for Freedom of Speech but when its actually exercised you get all up in arms about it. So many comments here about "Remove him from the air" and "Hate Crime!"
He does have the right to say what he wants, so long as he isn't endangering anybody else. I'm not saying I agree with what he says in the least, but I do recognize his Right to say whatever comes out of that wacko mind of his.- radiopayola, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12No one I've seen is suggesting laws that hinder free speech in order to silence this guy. However, it is reasonable to expect that any decent news organization would can this tool for saying such a thing. I think he has a right to say it, and I think his boss also has the right to fire his ass for saying something so ***** asinine. Just as he's free to say what he wants, we're all free to think he should be yanked off the air by a reasonable soul in a place of sufficient power. In fact, most of us can remember a day when it wasn't acceptable in our culture for people to say things like this. Does that mean we were less free? No, I think you could easily make the argument that we were MORE free.
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -1/+2Too bad Fox is happy about all this attention Gibson is getting. I hope it works out for Gibson the same way it worked out for Don Imus.
- thomasoa, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9Hmm, you seem to be the person who brought up hate crimes.
In a free market, people can call for a corporation to remove a person from the air. Free speech doesn't require that Fox or anybody else hires this *****. And one of the proper responses in a free society is shaming of a person who is being an *****.- PeppermintPig, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Exactly. People are going to be rude and bigoted anyways. Using the government to ban it doesn't work, and people will still be thinking about hating on people for trivial reasons.
Gibson is making an ass out of himself yet again. Maybe Fox is just trying to desensitize people to disgusting behavior by trying to be the biggest employer of big-mouthed hypocritical assholes and bigots.

- earthlingdave, on 01/24/2008, -3/+177It's a shame that his homophobia is so extreme that it extends into mocking the death of a straight, and presumably troubled, actor who played a gay character in a fictional film. What wonderful Christian values he represents, mocking the dead and disparaging the living. Regardless of the circumstances, which are not yet fully known, Mr. Ledger and his family deserve our sympathy.

Now that I have heard of you, I know that you are a total douche bag. Congratulations on reducing the total sum of human intelligence.

RIP Heath. A fine actor and a gentleman- souljaboytellem, on 01/24/2008, -6/+1I'm not hating on Ledger, but he should have got some help, he was such a good actor, yet he seems to have just thrown his life away, didnt he have a daughter or something, what was he thinking?
- skywake, on 01/24/2008, -0/+11Its entirely possible that the guy simply had a bad reaction to some prescription drugs that have a record of having not-so-nice side effects. The cause at this point isn't important however and as a fellow West Australian I feel just as much sympathy for his friends and family here as I do for his daughter and friends in the US. The thing that sickens me most is the way that people feel the need to push their agendas following events such as these. Greer did it with Irwin and now this ***** is doing it over Heath. Let the family grieve!

"Found next to a pile of prescription pills" and all that tabloid spew... - propsqueen81, on 01/24/2008, -1/+7Considering that all of the major news stations are reporting that his death was an accident, that there were no illicit substances in his apartment, he was suffering from walking pneumonia and unfortunately took a sleep aid that shouldn't be taken with respiratory problems does not make the man a junkie. He fought those demons and had been clean for a year according to his family and friends, which I would assume know him better that you ever did. It is a shame that you feel the need to completely disregard all of the facts and understand that accidents happen, and more over that people who are junkies can't clean up their act. In my opinion, the assumption you made puts you on par with the Fox Reporter that is also disrespecting the memory of such a fine actor.

- Weakling, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9This is just dumb ***** which is easy to ignore. It was much more painfull to see Heath Ledgers father, mother and sister reading a statement about Ledgers death and a reporter asking afterwards who they were.
- tofaroni, on 01/24/2008, -2/+25Well this at least makes Keith Olberman's job easier. This guy is an easy pick for "Worst Person".
- Treoinmypocket, on 01/24/2008, -10/+3That is funny. How many times has KO said ridiculous insensitive, outrageously crass ***** and not managed to elect himself "worst person"?
About once a month.- thomasoa, on 01/24/2008, -1/+5Ummm, really? KO said crass, rude *****? You wanna give an example?
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -2/+1He gets out there sometimes with his picking, but I still watch him. Someone has to be the antithesis of BillO.
- amoirae, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2Olbermann did put himself on the Worst Person list one day for making a misstatement on the previous day's broadcast.

- SuperVepr308, on 01/24/2008, -32/+2I actually think Gibson is pretty funny and his show is usually good. I am surprised he said that though. Not really in keeping with his show if you actually listen to it.
Digg away...- cyberprunes, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6I disagree. This guy is huge deusch bag. His name pops up periodically whenever he says some exceptionally hateful.

- Bentearwalking, on 01/24/2008, -1/+15My biggest complaint here is that it's NOT weird to think about death. We're all going to die. It's especially not weird in this situation because he DIDN'T have 50 or 60 years left to accomplish things.
Dear John Gibson,
Be more mindful of your pending mortality!- cyberprunes, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Yes, Death is not only for the old to ponder. Well considering he's from Fox news I'm not surprised he advocates not thinking.
- Cyclops0T8, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I second that. Especially if someone close to you has died, you realize how quickly your life can end. It makes you value what you have right now, so you make the most of your life.
- lyrica42, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Especially when you have a child you ponder death. It is a weird combination, I know, but you see so much spark in a child and you have to be sure that they are happy and well taken care of if anything were ever to happen to you. It is a very normal thing to ponder death.
- scargums, on 01/24/2008, -3/+17as a conservative republican, this kind of ***** always gets me pissed off at who represents me in the media
- queenstarsha, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1what? people who, like you, think gays are going to hell and should? or people who, like you, think it's fine to get tax cuts by getting afore-mentioned bigots to vote with them? i don't know what's in john gibson's heart, but he's either a genuine bigot or a fake bigot in it for the money, just like all the other republicans.
- products7074740, on 01/24/2008, -14/+13To those who are saying he should be kicked off the air, that's a bit ridiculous. I realize I'm assuming something about the general community of Digg, but thats just the kind of attitude the fear mongerers at Fox have had on everyone else. Imus, Opie and Anthony kicked off due to all this censorship *****. This is a good time for the people who believe censorship is wrong to prove it by not making a big deal out of this, and not be half assed about it. The guy may be a real schmuck, but dammit, he's got a right to say it on the air and even if i don't agree with it, I support his right to say it. Cuz this is America godammit!
-America-
"Go ***** Yourselves"- VitriolAndAngst, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6Fox TV shouldn't even have a broadcast license, because they are nothing but propaganda, and parlay political favors to people like Guilliani to be on the air.
Above and beyond that -- it isn't censorship to can someone for being an ass. This guy is an entertainer, and if people call the station and say; "we really don't like John's comments" then they are obviously not being entertained.
As a comedienne, maybe he could get away with it. But a lack of civility and manners is the problem for people like John and Imus -- not censorship. Besides, the government cancelled the news a long time ago. We have bigger problems than censorship -- we have propaganda.- TopherD, on 01/24/2008, -4/+2If Fox news wasn't on the air where would the conservatives go? CNN, CBS, please. I like Fox news and I know those four words will digg me down, but you have to admit, it's nice having them solely on one channel that you can turn if you don't like it.
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Dugg up! What a great perspective. I never thought of it that way! :)
- hatdrop, on 01/24/2008, -0/+0hmm maybe the same place the radical left goes for their perspective in the msm? cnn, msnbc, etc are a far cry from extreme left politcs. if the left can't have a channel for their crazies the right shouldn't either!!!!
- TopherD, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1I've heard CNN referred to as the communist news network, why, because their storylines are usually slanted heavy left. They are the flip flop of FOX. Discussions on Fox have 3 Conservatives and one liberal, CNN 3 liberals and one conservative. I don't much care for CNN so I change the channel. It's not that hard to do. If you aren't a fan of Fox, guess what, change the channel, but it's stupid to complain about it when you are the one in control of your own tv.
- gudnbluts, on 01/24/2008, -0/+0There's space for a decent Conservative network. Fox obviously isn't it. In England I used to get The Times (a Murdoch paper) and it did a good job of actually reporting news, while still having that Conservative lean. It is doable.
- TopherD, on 01/24/2008, -4/+2If Fox news wasn't on the air where would the conservatives go? CNN, CBS, please. I like Fox news and I know those four words will digg me down, but you have to admit, it's nice having them solely on one channel that you can turn if you don't like it.
- pateo, on 01/24/2008, -1/+5Agreed. He has every right to be a heartless son of a bitch.
Ugh, I'd like to hit him though. - JibberGeorge, on 01/24/2008, -1/+8Being fired for calling college educated black women nappy headed hoes is not "censorship *****".
Sorry to rain on your rant....- skankme, on 01/24/2008, -2/+2Uhh... yeah, I'm pretty sure it is. How is that comment any different then making any other ethnic joke? It may be racism, but it's still censorship... and depending on your view of censorship, calling it any censorship "*****" isn't a stretch.
Don't get me wrong, I hate Imus and got a good chuckle over the whole thing... but watch Carlos Mencia's show for 10 minutes and tell me how its any different?- DephexTwin, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Did the radio station make the choice to fire Don Imus? Yes. Not censorship. By your definition, firing any radio personality at any time would be censorship, would it not?
- hatdrop, on 01/24/2008, -0/+0Imus doesn't steal his material?
- skankme, on 01/24/2008, -2/+2Uhh... yeah, I'm pretty sure it is. How is that comment any different then making any other ethnic joke? It may be racism, but it's still censorship... and depending on your view of censorship, calling it any censorship "*****" isn't a stretch.
- thomasoa, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Sorry, but these radio programs exist as businesses, and one way we keep a civil society is to shame these businesses when they are being vulgar and cruel. We are free to boycott their sponsors, protest their places of business, etc.
John Gibson has a right to express his opinion, but he has no more right to a radio show than I do. - ackbz1, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I also have the right to boycott his advertisers. I doubt he would pay to see a movie about homosexuals, and likewise I don't want to pay for a show bashing them. You can say whatever you want in America, but doesn't mean you deserve to get PAID to say it, and we as a society are under NO obligation to subsidize hate speech.
- queenstarsha, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1a decent channel would remove someone so disgusting from the airwaves. i know, it's fox "news", so of course they won't. but people are allowed to be disgusted and to wonder what kind of channel puts someone like that on (and what kind of people get their rocks off watching it). it's our freedom of thought and expression to be disgusted.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6Fox TV shouldn't even have a broadcast license, because they are nothing but propaganda, and parlay political favors to people like Guilliani to be on the air.
- abenton, on 01/24/2008, -40/+7You guys are being sensationalist. He more than likely died of overdose, something of which I have no sympathy for him, especially since he leaves a 2yr old daughter behind to grow up alone. I feel terribly for the family, but have little honest sympathy for him, choosing to live in a way that lead him to this. Go ahead and bury me down now diggnation...
- VitriolAndAngst, on 01/24/2008, -1/+4I'm guessing, you don't have much sympathy in general, and you don't understand depression. I'm not making an excuse for him -- it's just that when people break a leg, others can understand that they have a health problem.
Heath is divorced from his family -- my guess is that is part of the problem.- Treoinmypocket, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1why is he divorced?
- abenton, on 01/24/2008, -4/+3Understanding a health problem, and letting it consume you so much you kill yourself over it are two different things. Trying to compare a broken leg to a hardcore drug addiction, or even popping so many pills to "feel good", is pretty lame.
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2From what I understand Heath was not a drug user or a pill-popper, and the cops said there is no evidence that he committed suicide. He wasn't screwed up psychologically, either.
It's relatively obvious to me that it was accidental, he had no intention of dying. Why is it that people who have to take prescriptions are automatically thought to be addicts or have suicidal tendencies? This is definitely NOT another Anna Nicole Smith. NO ONE saw it coming (um, with the exception of Jack Nicholson, apparently!).

(apologizing for the source... I guess it's a bit ironic, isn't it?) - Tuto, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1No abenton you are lame. Its rare that you honestly get to say that somebody doesn't have a ***** clue what they are talking about, but thanks to your post i finally got the chance. You don't understand mental health problems at all, i wouldn't be surprised if you grew up in some farm.
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2From what I understand Heath was not a drug user or a pill-popper, and the cops said there is no evidence that he committed suicide. He wasn't screwed up psychologically, either.
- Treoinmypocket, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1why is he divorced?
- zardoz73, on 01/24/2008, -1/+10How do you know how he died? At the time of this writing, his death is inconclusive. Looks like he did in fact OD on sleeping pills (a prescribed drug, btw), but it could very well have been accidental. Do you have ANY idea how many people die from prescription medicine every year? Not overdosing, mind you, just taking the pills as the doctor ordered. Any idea, abenton? No? Then STFU.
- abenton, on 01/24/2008, -6/+2No I don't know how many people accidentally OD, and no I won't "STFU". If you had known you would have said so. When all the reports lead to OD, with pills all over his bed, etc, it's easy to deduce what happened.
This is funny, that I get hated on for jumping to conclusions, when 99% of diggers do it every day when its a pro-ron paul or anti-bush, people jump all over that *****. Case and point, the supposed stock market crash that never occured- Syric, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3If by "easy to deduce" you mean "easy to deduce it was an accident", then yeah. If "accidental" isn't the first word that comes to your mind when someone mentions "overdose", then you've led a troubled life.
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Jeez, abenton, there were NOT "pills all over his bed, etc." -- where do you get your news from???
- queenstarsha, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1dugg down after, "no i won't STFU."
- abenton, on 01/24/2008, -6/+2No I don't know how many people accidentally OD, and no I won't "STFU". If you had known you would have said so. When all the reports lead to OD, with pills all over his bed, etc, it's easy to deduce what happened.
- pateo, on 01/24/2008, -2/+2I agree that if it was an overdose, he made a choice to live that way and that was irresponsible (not strong enough of a word) of him having a daughter and such. But if you look at it in simpler terms, if you see it as someone lost a father, a son, a friend, a fellow human being, much too young.. it's just sad. It doesn't need to be more complex than that, it's just a sad thing and I have the deepest sympathy for his family and friends despite his substance abuse.
- abenton, on 01/24/2008, -5/+2Like I said, I have sympathy for his family. If they come out and say "accidental overdose", which I dont know really how you accidentally take too many pills, I will recant my statement, but I do no have sympathy for people who kill themselves. Sure, it's sad and people close to them should have stepped in and helped them, but if someone wants to self-destruct, they usually find ways.
- allatti2d, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3abenton, you insist on making these ignorant comments, I must question your age and life experience and education. It may not be about "taking too many pills" -- it could be a cross-reaction of a few different meds, including the meds he was taking for his pneumonia. It could also be that his prescribed dose was too much for his body to take. Even after the tox reports come in, there may be no way of knowing for sure.
It sounds to me like you've been hearing or reading gossip instead of actual news. I'm not obsessed with stories about celebrity deaths (thankfully), but please don't be ignorant. Educate yourself.

- Alathea, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3You are aware that it is possible to OD accidentally, especially considering that he was prescribed anti-depresants AND sleep-aids? Not a safe combination under the best of circumstances.
- Fullvinyl, on 01/24/2008, -2/+2Uhh...his daughter does have a mother, shockingly enough...
- abenton, on 01/24/2008, -2/+2Yea, but no father, that's the whole point.

- abenton, on 01/24/2008, -2/+2Yea, but no father, that's the whole point.

- eugene259, on 01/24/2008, -2/+2So let me see, seems like a common thread here is, if he dies of overdose, he is scum, otherwise he deserves our sympathy. What a load of rubbish, get your philosophy straight - if he died from overdose he deserves double our sympathy because he must have had issues and been unhappy with his life. Don't get judgemental, I am sure you are no saint either.
- Hewolf1982, on 01/24/2008, -3/+2Thats the problem with people nowadays. Life can be tough people. - VitriolAndAngst, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3And now, John Gibson with the family favorites; "Concentration Camp Jokes" -- what, too soon?
These people on Fox need to hire someone with at least an inkling of what it means to be a decent human being. A good hint; being decent, isn't just talking about family values, and disparaging people. I say this with irony, full well knowing, I'm creating Yet Another Snarky Blog Comment. But hey, this guy is on TV. He doesn't know anything about Heath Ledger, and you have to consider that someone might actually be watching Fox -- so this could get back to the family.
Maybe Heath committed suicide because there were cruel people like John in it?- malman4, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2RADIO
- VitriolAndAngst, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Yeah, my bad.
I don't listen to the Radio or the TV News anymore -- so John Gibson is not on the tip of my brain, so to speak.
Same difference; He is in a public forum, on the public air waves.
My blogging silliness -- is a person venting. We get rude at times. But when you pretend to be a news program, their should be a little bit more thought as to the impact of what you say. I don't pretend to even WANT some law forcing people not to be jerks. Saying that John is a jerk, should be enough.
